Last Sunday, I went to a new restaurant in town to eat dinner with my father.
During the dinner, a special “picture” drew my attention. A young mother carrying her baby daughter was sitting close to us. I saw her using the spoon with her mouth and then feeding the daughter. “Why did she use her mouth instead of her hands?” I thought. Then I asked my father to see that.
Maybe the mother heard me, and she began to tell us her daughter’s story, “My baby daughter had a bad accident and lost both of her arms one year ago. Can you imagine the life without both arms? After the sadness, I made a decision: I began to do nearly everything with my mouth, like using the spoon and chopsticks, cleaning the room, turning on or off the TV and so on. I wanted to let her know she could also do them with her mouth. I think she can imitate me in everyday life.” After eating, the young mother stood up from the seat and then took out of the money with her mouth. She did that very expertly (熟练地). Finally, she turned back and said, “I believe she’ll do everything best with her mouth.” “Yes, she will.” My father and I both said.

Qingming Festival, or Tomb-Sweeping Day, is a traditional festival where Chinese show respects to their ancestors and the dead. People in different places of the country eat different foods on the day, from green rice balls and omelets (煎蛋饼) to fried dough twists and pancakes. Here are some traditional foods people eat on the special day.
Qingtuan, or green rice balls, are widely eaten in China’s Jiangnan area around Qingming Festival. The seasonal delicious food is usually made from glutinous rice mixed with pounded mugwort.
In both northern and southern China, it is an age-old tradition to eat sanzi, or fried dough twists, on Tomb-Sweeping Day. However, the sanzi in North and South China are different from each other in terms of size and material. Northern people like larger ones made from wheat, while people in the South enjoy smaller ones made from rice.
Thin pancakes are popular food for people in Xiamen in Southeast China’s Fujian province on Tomb-Sweeping Day. To make it tastier, they usually add dried seaweed, omelet, vegetables and chili sauce to the pancakes.
In Qingdao in East China’s Shandong province, people eat spring onion and omelet on the day. They believe the two together make eyes brighter. In ancient times, pupils often sent eggs to their teachers to show respect on the day.
The Zitui bun (馍) is named after Jie Zitui, a famous hermit of the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC). People in Shanxi province have a tradition of eating the bun on Tomb-Sweeping Day. Colorful dough (面团) animals and flowers are added to make the bun look better, while eggs and jujubes are added inside to increase sweetness.

The first Laughter Club was founded in California, America, in 1985 by Dr. Steven Kataria. “Young children laugh about 200 times a day. Adults laugh between 6 and 14 times a day,” says Dr. Kataria. “Everyone is naturally good at laughing — it’s the universal language. We want people to feel happy with their lives.” There are now more than 600 Laughter Clubs in America and over 1,450 in the world.
Many doctors are also interested in the effects (效果) of laughter on our health. According to a 6-year study at the UCLA School of Medicine in New York, with laughing there is less stress in the body. Laughter improves our health against illness by about 45%.
So what happens at a Laughter Club? I went along to my nearest club in South London to find out. I was quite nervous at the beginning of the class, to be honest, I wasn’t interested in laughing with a group of strangers, and I was worried about looking stupid. Our laughter teacher told us to clap our hands and say ”ho ho ho, ha ha ha" while looking at each other. However, our bodies can’t tell the difference between real laughter and unreal laughter, so they still produce the same healthy effects.
Surprisingly, it worked! After ten minutes everybody in the room was laughing for real and some people just couldn’t stop! At the end of the class I was surprised by how relaxed and comfortable I felt. So if you’re under stress, then start laughing. You might be very pleased with the results!

Cultural experts say Shanxi is home to the largest number of ancient buildings in China Xuankong Temple at Hengshan Mountain in Hunyuan County is no doubt one of the most wonderful examples of such a saying.
Made of wood, tiles and stones during the mid-Northern Wei Dynasty, the temple is made up of two three-story pavilions (阁) and a yard linked by staircases and steps. The staircases and steps are lined along the surface of a sheer cliff (悬崖) rising 50 meters above a stream at the foot of the mountain.
Seen from below, Xuankong Temple, which literally means “temple hanging in the sky”, appears terribly dangerous. It is supported only by a few thin stanchions (支柱) standing or protruding rocks. For that reason, it was selected by time magazine as one of the 10 most dangerous buildings in the world in 2010.
Sun Shupeng, an engineer, however, disagreed with the idea that Xuankong Temple is, in fact, a dangerous building. “The temple has been standing firmly on the Hengshan cliff for more than 1,500 years and is still kept perfect and solid, ” he said. “A study of the temple is an exploration of an ancient Chinese engineering miracle.”
Sun said the stanchions were only added recently as a psychological (心理的) comfort to visitors. About twenty thick square beams support most of the building’s weight. A number of large, deep holes were dug into the cliff’s surface, and two-thirds, of the length of the beams together with wedges were driven into each one.
In addition to its strong building. Local people have found that the section of cliff above the temple acts like an umbrella to protect the temple from rain and sunlight. In summer, when the daytime is the longest, the temple only receives about two hours of direct sunlight a day during the morning.
The narrow valley it faces also changes the direction of airflow. The wind usually blows toward the cliff facing the temple, but rarely reaches the temple.
42. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
(1)The temple is at the top of the mountain.
(2)There is a stream at the foot of the mountain.
(3)The temple is made of wood, tiles and stones.
(4)The temple is made up of two yards and a pavilion.
A. (2)(3) B. (1)(2) C. (3)(4) D. (1)(4)
43. Why does the temple look terribly dangerous?
A. It is badly broken.
B. It was built 1,500 years ago.
C. It is 50 meters high above a stream.
D. It seems to be supported only by a few thin stanchions.
44. What is the purpose of writing Paragraph 5?
A. To advertise the value of the building.
B. To show the safety of Xuankong Temple.
C. To explain how Xuankong Temple was built.
D. To tell the purpose of building Xuankong Temple.
45. What is the best title for the passage?
A. An Ancient Building Facing a Valley
B. An Ancient Building with Three Stories
C. Xuankong Temple: a Wonder of Ancient Times
D. Xuankong Temple: a Popular Tourist Attraction
A 43. D 44. B 45. C
根据“Made of wood, tiles and stones during the mid-Northern Wei Dynasty, the temple is made up of two three-story pavilions and a yard linked by staircases and steps. The staircases and steps are lined along the surface of a sheer cliff rising 50 meters above a stream at the foot of the mountain. (这座寺庙建于北魏中期,由木材、瓦片和石头建成,由两座三层阁楼和一个庭院组成,阁楼和庭院之间由楼梯和台阶相连。楼梯和台阶沿着陡峭悬崖的表面排列,高出山脚下溪流50米。)”可知,悬空寺位于悬崖上,山脚下有一条小溪,寺庙由木头、瓦片和石头建成,包含两座楼阁和一个庭院,因此(2)和(3)表述正确。故选A。
根据第三段中“Seen from below, Xuankong Temple, which literally means “temple hanging in the sky”, appears terribly dangerous. It is supported only by a few thin stanchions standing or protruding rocks. (从下方望去,“悬空寺”,字面意思即“悬挂在空中的寺庙”,看起来极其危险。它似乎仅由几根立在或突出于岩石上的细支柱支撑着。)”可知,从下方看,悬空寺似乎仅由几根细支柱支撑,所以看起来极其危险。故选D。
【44题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“Sun said the stanchions were only added recently as a psychological comfort to visitors. About twenty thick square beams support most of the building’s weight. A number of large, deep holes were dug into the cliff’s surface, and two-thirds, of the length of the beams together with wedges were driven into each one.

38. How many Laughter Clubs are there in the world today?
A. About 200. B. About 600. C. Over 2050. D. Over 1450.
39. How did the writer feel in the end?
A. Exhausted. B. Pleased. C. Nervous. D. Anxious.
40. When did the people in the club begin to laugh for real?
A. At the half of the class. B. At the end of the class.
C. After ten minutes of the class. D. Before ten minutes of the class.
41. The article mainly tells us ________.
A. laughing is one of the best ways to stay healthy
B. young children laugh much more often than adults in a day
C. the real and unreal laughter produce the same healthy effects
D. many-doctors are also interested in the effects of laughter on our health
