A
While rice and wheat are the two most commonly consumed grains worldwide, a study covering more than 100,000 people has revealed that choosing rice as a staple (主要的) food may result in a lower risk of obesity.
Researchers collected data from participants aged 35 to 74. The participants responded to questionnaires via face-to-face interviews, providing information about their medical history and lifestyle, such as dietary status and physical activity. The researchers divided them into three groups according to their weekly rice and wheat intake. The first group eats rice as their staple food, consuming it either daily or four to six times per week. The second group’s staple food is wheat, and the third group consumes both rice and wheat as their staple food, with similar frequency.
The results show that rice preference may be associated with a lower risk of certain obesity types and that higher wheat intake was associated with higher risks of excessive body fat in men and women. However, when wheat lovers changed their staple food to rice five times per week, the participants showed a 36.5 percent lower risk of obesity in men and a 20.5 percent lower risk in women.
According to the researchers, wheat flour absorbs less water than rice when cooked, partly resulting in a higher energy density of wheat than rice. Meanwhile, ricebased dietary patterns often have more fresh vegetables, legumes, meat and fish servings. People with wheat preference tend to eat large bowls of noodles with fewer vegetables or less meat, and sometimes even with a large amount of oil.
The researchers concluded that compared with preference for wheat, preference for rice, or changing from wheat to rice could be associated with lower risks of overall fat accumulation, especially for individuals with normal weight. They also noted that given the vast territory and diverse ethnic groups, further studies may be necessary to fully understand the regional specificity and potential reasons for the observed links.
1. How did the researchers arrange the subjects?
A. By their staple food. B. By the age. C. By their territory. D. By gender.
2. What can be inferred from the results?
A. We can take in as much rice as possible.
B. Wheat intake makes people fat and unhealthy.
C. Obesity risks can get lower with the shift of staple food.
D. Women are easier to get fat by consuming too much wheat.
3. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. How people cook their meals. B. Why people easily get fat by intake of wheat.
C. What people should eat for their health. D. What ingredients should be included in the diet.
4. What can we learn about the results of the research from the last paragraph?
A. People from different places have different preferences for food.
B. Overweight people shouldn’t eat any wheat food.
C. People with normal weight won’t gain fat again.
D. More studies should be done to better understand the connection.

Through intercultural communication, we come to create, understand, and transform culture and identity. Intercultural communication is communication between people with different cultural identities.
One reason we should study intercultural communication is to enhance self-awareness. Our thinking process regarding culture is often “others-focused”, meaning that the culture of the other person or group is what stands out in our view. However, the old saying “know thyself” is appropriate, as we become more aware of our own culture by better understanding other cultures and views.
Intercultural communication can allow us to step outside of our comfortable, usual frame of reference and see our culture through a different aspect. Additionally, as we become more self-aware, we may become more ethical communicators as we challenge our tendency to view our culture as superior to others.
As was noted earlier, differences matter, and studying intercultural communication can help us better negotiate in our changing world. Changing economies and technologies intersect with culture in meaningful ways. Technology has created a global village where vast distances are much shorter due to new technology that makes travel and communication more accessible and convenient. However, as the following “Getting Plugged In” box indicates, there is also a digital divide, which refers to the unequal access to technology and related skills that exist throughout much of the world. People in most fields will be more successful if they are prepared to work in a globalized world.
Obviously, the global market sets up the need for intercultural competence for employees who travel between locations of a multinational corporation. Perhaps less obvious may be the need for teachers to work with students who do not speak English as their first language and for police officers, lawyers, managers, and medical personnel to be able to work with people who have various cultural identities.
5. Why does the author mention the old saying “know thyself” in paragraph 2?
A To stress the right attitude towards cultures.
B. To state the advantages of our culture over others.
C. To explain we have a great sense of self-awareness.
D. To show the other group’s culture stands out in our eyes.
6. Intercultural communication makes us view our culture ________.
A. with more confidence B. in more diverse ways
C. as much superior to other cultures D. from different times and occasions
7 What does the author imply about intercultural communication in the last paragraph?
A. It is a must for all people. B. It is essential for lawyers.
C. People need it differently. D. Employers regard it as a basic skill.
8. What attitude does the author have towards intercultural communication?
A. Doubtful B. Supportive C. Indifferent D. Ambiguous
C
Of all the options for a night out in Boston, a lawyer’s office probably doesn’t rank high on many lists. Yet, that’s where two recent college graduates found themselves last fall. They had such great fun that they’ve decided to repeat the experience. Tonight, they’ve arrived at a barbershop. This location is a secret — just as the law office was. A man at the door checks that they’re on the guest list. Then, he welcomes them to Don’t Tell Comedy.
Every weekend, in over 200 cities around the world, Don’t Tell Comedy hosts secret shows by stand-up comedians. Venues range from boxing gyms to boats. For one night only, the barbershop has been transformed into a pop-up comedy club.
Founded in 2017, Don’t Tell Comedy has had a success that reflects the remarkable boom of live comedy. In large part, the demand for stand-up has been fueled by filmed specials on streaming platforms and funny clips on TikTok. Events such as Don’ t Tell Comedy are urging people to get off their sofas, because online entertainment is no replacement for participating in in-person events.
“It feels a little bit like magic,” says Brendan Eyre, the headliner among the five performers at the barbershop. “You’re sharing an experience with strangers. You’re laughing at the same thing, which brings people together.”
In an era when many people can’t watch television without constantly checking their phones, the audiences for both sets at the barbershop are fully unplugged for more than 70 minutes. Attendees may even become part of the show. For instance, one comedian cracked a joke about first-times Gilbert Paredes and Kelly Emmons.
“If you sit at the front, they might give you attention,” says Ms. Emmons. “But that’s part of the fun. If you wanted something that is one-way, you would stay at home and watch your TV.” For her, part of the appeal of the inexpensive Don’t Tell Comedy event is discovering talents she hasn’t heard of before. The lineups are a secret prior to each show.
9. What can be learned about Don’t Tell Comedy?
A. It is conducted by a lawyer. B. It usually takes place on weekdays.
C. It appeals to the young especially. D. It is secretly held in unusual places.
10. What might contribute to the increasing demand for stand-up?
A. People’s lack of online entertainment. B. The easy access to in-person events.
C. The influence of online platforms. D. People’s urge to be unplugged and connect.
11. What does Brendan Eyre think of the experience at the barbershop?
A. It relies on common interests. B. It forms a sense of community.
C. It inspires audiences to share their stories. D. It needs to be more humorous.
12. Which word best describes the stand-up at the barbershop?
A. Interactive. B. Creative. C. Educational. D. Professional.
D

One afternoon after school Ella and her brother Mark, were eating at a cafe near their home. That afternoon, they had to share their table with another person. That person was a young man in his twenties. After eating, he went to the restroom leaving his iPad on the table. Five minutes later, he came out talking on the cellphone with someone and hurriedly walked out of the cafe without looking back.
Ella saw the iPad on the table. She quickly told Mark, “Mark, the man left behind his iPad.” Mark looked at the iPad. It took his breath away. It was one of the latest models on the market. Mark had always wanted an iPad. But his parents had told him, “You have a cellphone and you need to focus on your study. No need, to have an iPad.” He stared at it for some minutes. Then he said slowly, pausing on every word, “I want to take the iPad.” Ella could not believe her ears. She merely stared at her brother. “You can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it?”
Having made the decision, Mark quickly grabbed the iPad and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Ella’s hand and led her out of the cafe quickly.
Once back home, Mark rushed to his bedroom. Inside his room, he couldn’t wait to take out the piece of beauty from the bag. Oh, he liked it so much. He had his dream iPad for free. Soon, he was polishing it happily. But Ella came in, telling him, “Mark, you cannot keep the iPad. What will you tell Father about this? He will ask you how you got the iPad.” Mark said quickly, “I will say a friend lent it to me.” Ella said, “Now you are lying. Oh dear! When have you turned so dishonest?”
Then Ella noticed a phone number on the back of the iPad. “This may be the man’s phone number. Why don’t we just call this number? He must be worried and sad about losing his iPad. We will talk to him and ask him to come and take it back.” She was trying to talk some sense into him.

One afternoon after school, Ella and her brother Mark, were eating at a cafe near their home.

I am going to phone the owner.”
Ella was very happy to hear that. Back home, they immediately dialed the number on the back. A young man answered the phone. Mark asked, “Have you lost an iPad? I’m Mark. I found your iPad. Can you come and get it?” “Yes!” the man replied excitedly. Then he expressed his gratitude repeatedly. Ten minutes later, he was at the same cafe to meet Mark and Ella.
