Preventing heart disease is a topic I think about all the time, given my family history of heart disease. So last summer, I travelled to Bolivia. The natives, called the Tsimane, were reported to have the healthiest hearts in the world. I wanted to learn what they could teach me about preventing heart disease.
Getting to the Tsimane wasn’t easy. They lived in small family groups of about 60 people along river banks. We finally found one of the villages at sunset. That night, we set up our tents in the middle of the village. Thatched huts (茅草屋) surrounded us, with no electricity or modern conveniences.
I initially thought they mainly got their calories from meat. However, I found food such as rice and corn made up nearly 70% of their diet. The food was not processed, lacking added sugars or salts.
During my stay there, I went hunting and fishing with the men and played soccer with the kids. I found the Tsimane were standing or walking nearly all of their waking hours. Men spent lots of time tracking animals. Farming and gathering, mostly done by children and women, were all-day affairs.
I also got a clear idea of how they rested. As soon as the sun went down, people returned to their huts and went to sleep. And with the call of the cock in the morning, another day began.
The lifespan (平均寿命) of the Tsimane is actually much shorter than those living in the US. Various factors, like animal attacks and infections, bring down the lifespan. But up until the day they die, they are often very healthy. While heart disease kills thousands of Americans every year and costs nearly a billion dollars a day, the Tsimane remind us that wealth doesn't necessarily buy health.
4. Why does the author pay so much attention to preventing heart disease?
A. He wants to teach others about the topic. B. His family members encourage him to do so.
C. He was born with a high risk of heart disease. D. He dreams of becoming a doctor.
5. Which factors did the author mainly focus on in his research?
A. Diet, activity and rest. B. Housing, food and cooperation.
C. Physical work, social life and lifespan. D. Group size, family history and consumption.
6. What was the Tsimane’s sleep-wake cycle mainly based on?
A. Natural light. B. Natural sound.
C. Routine activity. D. Animal behaviour.
7. What might the author advise us to do after his travels in Bolivia?
A. Stand less and walk more. B. Take in less sugar and salt.
C. Eat white meat instead of red meat. D. Live in the middle of the community.

United Airlines is aiming to have electric aircraft flying regional routes by the end of the decade, part of the company's goal to fully reduce its carbon footprint to net zero by 2050.
Those battery-powered aircraft are being developed by Swedish start-up Heart Aerospace, from which United Airlines placed an order for 100 planes in July 2021. United Airlines has pushed heavily into a variety of lower-emission forms of aviation, not only announcing plans to buy electric air taxis and vertical aircraft, as well as hydrogen-electric engines but also investing in the companies behind the advanced technologies.
“We cannot continue doing and operating our business the way we do;it is important that we change it and the way we're going to change it is through investing in technology, "Mike Leskinen, United Airlines Ventures president, said in an interview as part of CNBC's ESG Impact virtual conference on Thursday. “Existing technology is going to either cause us to fly less, which is an unacceptable alternative, or continue with a carbon footprint, which we believe is equally unacceptable, " Leskinen said.
Heart Aerospace, which recently redesigned what will be its first electric aircraft that is now called the ES-30, plans to have the planes enter service in 2028, said Anders Forslund, the company's CEO and founder.
The 30-passenger planes will be driven by electric motors with battery-derived energy, allowing the planes to have a fully electric range of 200 kilometres. The planes will also include a reserve-hybrid engine powered by sustainable aviation fuel, allowing it to have an extended range of up to 400 kilometres with a full flight.
United Airlines could potentially offer those shorter routes not only with greater frequency but at a lower cost, Leskinen said. “As we adopt electric aircraft, I think the cost for a 30-seat aircraft or a 50-seat aircraft, as the industry evolves, is going to be lower than a traditional aircraft, "he said. For small cities, this means they are“going to get either service that they didn't have before or greater frequency of service”, he added.
8. What message did Mike Leskinen try to deliver in Paragraph 3?
A. Economic benefits should come first. B. Environmental protection should come first.
C. Economy and environment should be equally valued. D. Economy and environment can't be balanced.
9. What do we learn about the electric planes mentioned in the text?
A. They will offer short-distance flights. B They will fly faster than traditional ones.
C. They were developed by United Airlines. D. They each can hold 30 passengers at most.
10. What did Leskinen try to stress about the electric planes in the last paragraph?
A. Their security performance. B. Their potential benefits.
C. Their operating modes. D. Their possible problems.
11. Which would be the most suitable title for the text?
A. ES-30 Will Be Driven by Electric Motors B. The Airline Industry Faces New Opportunities
C. Heart Aerospace Plans to Develop Electric Planes D. United Airlines Aims to Have Electric Planes Flying

The South Pole has been warming at more than three times the global average over the past 30 years, according to research led by Ohio University professor Ryan Fogt, and Kyle Clem, who is a current postdoctoral research fellow in climate science. According to the study, this warming period was mainly driven by natural tropical(热带的)climate variability and was likely strengthened by increases in greenhouse gases.
Clem and his team analyzed weather station data at the South Pole, as well as climate models to examine the warming in the Antarctic interior(内陆) . They found that between 1989 and 2018, the South Pole had warmed by about 1. 8℃ over the past 30 years at a rate of+0. 6℃ per decade-three times the global average.
The study also found that the strong warming over the Antarctic interior in the last 30 years was mainly driven by the tropics, especially warm ocean temperatures in the western tropical Pacific Ocean that changed the winds in the South Atlantic near Antarctica and increased the delivery of warm air to the South Pole. They suggest these atmospheric changes along Antarctica's coast are an important mechanism driving climate anomalies(异常事物)in its interior.
Clem and Fogt argue that these warming trends were unlikely the result of natural climate change alone, stressing the effects of added warming related to human activities on top of the large tropical climate signal on Antarctic climate have worked together to make this one of the strongest warming trends worldwide.
"From the very beginning, Kyle and I worked very well together and were able to accomplish more as a team than we were individually, "Fogt said. "We have published every year together since 2013, with one of our continuing collaborations being the annual State of the Climate reports. Our work on this project together each year ultimately led to this publication documenting the warming at the South Pole. However, most importantly for my family and me, apart from being a fantastic scientist and collaborator, Kyle is also considered as one of our closest friends. "
12. What is the major cause of the South Pole's warming according to the research?
A. The weather station. B. Lack of winds.
C. Increases of greenhouse gases. D. Natural tropical climate change.
13. What is paragraph 3mainly about?
A. The tropical climate signals in the Antarctic interior.
B. The effect of human activities on the warming trends.
C. The detailed explanation for the South Pole's warming.
D. The unpleasant consequences of natural climate change.
14. Which of the following does Fogt most probably agree on?
A. Cooperation is valued in scientific research. B. Getting science paper published is difficult.
C. Friendship is more important than science. D. Family support plays a key role in science.
15. From which is the text most probably taken?
A. A chemistry textbook. B. A science magazine.
C. A travel brochure. D. A science novel.

Muzak
The next time you go into a bank, a store, or a supermarket, stop and listen. What do you hear? (16) It's similar to the music you listen to, but it's not exactly the same. That's because this music was especially designed to relax you, or to give you extra energy. Sometimes you don't even realise the music is playing, but you react to the music anyway.
Quiet background music used to be called "elevator (电梯) music"because we often heard it in elevators. But lately we hear it in more and more places, and it has a new name“Muzak”. About one-third of the people in America listen to "Muzak"every day. The music plays for 15 minutes at a time, with short pauses in between. It is always more lively between ten and eleven in the morning, and between three and four in the afternoon, when people are more tired. (17)
If you listen to Muzak carefully, you will probably recognise the names of many of the songs. Some musicians or songwriters don't want their songs to be used as Muzak, but others are happy when their songs are chosen. Why? (18)
Music is often played in public places because it is designed to make people feel less lonely when they are in an airport or a hotel. It has been proven that Muzak does what it is designed to do. Tired office workers suddenly have more energy when they hear the pleasant sound of Muzak in the background. (19) Supermarket shoppers buy 38 percent more groceries
(20) They say it's boring to hear the same songs all the time. But other people enjoy hearing Muzak in public places. They say it helps them relax and feel calm. One way or another, Muzak affects everyone. Some farmers even say their cows give more milk when they hear Muzak!
A. Some people don’t like Muzak.
B. The music gives them extra energy.
C. Music is playing in the background.
D. Factory workers produce 13 percent more.
E. Muzak tends to help people understand music better.
F. They get as much as $4 million a year if their songs are used.
G. Muzak is played in most of the big supermarkets in the world.

Dave was a make-up(化妆) artist who regularly held makeup artistry classes at the local community college. He was well known as an excellent trainer and enjoyed great popularity.
Usually, the majority of his students were middle-aged housewives, who wanted to fine-tune their make-up skills so as to make themselves more attractive. But this time, it was beyond him that his class was attended by a man as well.
The new student was a gentleman in his best years with a seemingly boundless interest in make-up artistry. He was keen to learn as much as he possibly could and asked questions whenever and wherever possible. He was so absorbed in learning that he wouldn't stop until he was satisfied with the result of his work.
Understandably, the man was the number one subject of conversation when the other woman were alone.
Speculations (猜测) quickly started to spread. Why did he learn make-up? Was he to seek for a woman to be his life partner? How about my neighbor's youngest daughter? Why on earth would he attend such a woman class? Who could it be?
Doubts like this came crowding in.
The community college was placed in a remote rural area, which was why the other participants were quite doubtful of the man's intentions. Throughout the lessons, ignoring the curious women around him, the man carefully listened and wrote everything down he learned, leaving the women more and more curious and puzzled.
When the day and class were slowly coming to an end, the gossiping women simply could not hide their curiosity any longer, for they knew it was time to remove their doubts. Finally, one of them couldn't resist her curiosity, so she picked up the courage and asked him why he was so interested in make-up artistry. What followed was a dead silence. After what seemed a century, he slowly opened his mouth and here came the most inspiring beautiful reply.
Para 1:
He said his beloved wife partially lost her eyesight because of diabetes (糖尿病) and she was no longer able to apply her make-up.
Para 2:
So he decided to take the course to surprise his wife.

Dear Eric,
I hope this email finds you well. Last Friday, our class organized a first-aid workshop with an experienced expert. We learned essential skills like CPR, wound dressing, and handling burns. The practical session was eye-opening—I practiced bandaging and even used a dummy for chest compressions!
The experience made me realize how crucial first-aid knowledge is. It empowers us to act swiftly in emergencies, potentially saving lives. I now feel more confident to help others in need. Let me know if you’d like me to share more details!

He said his beloved wife partially lost her eyesight because of diabetes and she was no longer able to apply her make-up. Her confidence had faded, and she often avoided social gatherings. Para 2:
So he decided to take the course to surprise his wife. On their anniversary, he gently applied her favorite makeup, guided by love and the skills he’d mastered. Tears welled up in her eyes as she looked in the mirror. “You’ve given me back more than my smile,” she whispered. The class, once a subject of gossip, became a testament to devotion, reminding everyone that true beauty lies in selfless love.
