B After I graduated with a Master’s in public relations in 2010, my first boss congratulated me, but he also brought me right back down to earth pretty quickly when he told me that I’d have to continue my education in order to progress throughout my career. I remember feeling shocked at the prospect, as I had sworn (发誓) I was done with essays and exams forever. Yet, here I was, hearing that I’d never truly be fully “educated”. I keep his words in mind, and whenever I find myself at a crossroads, I turn to education. When I decided to do an MBA in 2021, the big questions for me were: Where, and when? Dublin City University (DCU) stood out as I had benefited from what the university offered while studying for my degree in multimedia back in 2005. The course also took place on Thursdays, which allowed me flexibility at weekends. This was essential to balancing the course with my full-time work and family commitments. Over the two years of the course, I changed jobs twice, moving into global roles, which required a whole new degree of performance and commitment at work. I went to two FIFA World Cups leading social impact campaigns as part of the FIFA Communications team, and I was pregnant with my first child during my final term. Each of my classmates had their own unique journeys as well. Life happens anyway. I think the real question when you’re pursuing further education is “why”. If your “why” is strong enough and you truly believe in the benefits, the sacrifices (牺牲) that come alongside studying part-time become much easier. Our class gathered together each Thursday, enjoying the companionship beyond our traditional networking, which is truly a “money can’t buy” bonus of taking the course. I also found myself going into work each week with new strings added to my bow. I have seen my career progress in ways I couldn’t have imagined. And as for the advice of my first boss, surely I’m finished with essays and exams by now. 4. Why did the author choose to study part-time at DCU? A It enabled her to study on weekends. B. It had a reputation for MBA programs. C. She had positive experience at DCU. D. She could set her own class schedule. 5. What happened to the author while she was pursuing her MBA? A. She got another college degree. B. She put her family ahead of work. C. She completely changed her career. D. She advanced her professional career. 6. What is an unexpected benefit of taking the MBA course? A. Starting a family. B. Developing friendships. C. Avoiding personal sacrifices. D. Getting more job opportunities. 7. What motivated the author to take lifelong education? A. Her desire for self-improvement. B. Her belief in its benefits. C. Her family’s encouragement. D. Her classmates’ persuasion. C Some new personal computers that run Microsoft’s Windows 11 operating system will have a special Copilot key that launches the software giant’s AI chatbot. Getting third-party computer manufacturers like Dell to add an AI button to laptops is the latest move by Microsoft to use its close partnership with ChatGPT-maker Open AI and make itself a gateway for applications of generative AI technology. Although most people now connect to the Internet and many Al applications by phone rather than computer, it’s a symbolic kickoff to what’s expected to be a competitive year as tech companies race to outdo each other in AI applications. The keyboard redesign will be Microsoft’s biggest change to PC keyboards since it introduced a special Windows key in the 1990s. Microsoft’s four-squared logo design has changed, but the key has been a fixture on Windows-oriented keyboards for about three decades. The newest AI button will be marked by the ribbon-like Copilot logo and be located near the space bar. On some computers it will replace the right “CTRL” key, while on others it will replace a menu key. Microsoft is not the only company with customized keys. Apple pioneered the concept in the 1980s with its “Command” key marked by a looped square design. Google has a search button on its Chromebooks and was first to experiment with an AI-specific key to launch its voice assistant on its now-discontinued Pixelbook. But Microsoft has a much stronger hold on the broader PC market through its licensing agreements with third-party manufacturers like Lenovo, Dell and HP. About 82% of all desktop computers, laptops and workstations run Windows, compared to 9% for Apple’s in-house operating system and just over 6% for Google’s, according to market research firm IDC. Dell Technologies was the first to fix a Copilot key on its newest XPS laptops. Microsoft hasn’t yet said which other computer makers are installing (安装) the Copilot button beyond Microsoft’s own in-house line of premium (高端的) Surface devices. 8. Why does Microsoft introduce the new keyboard? A. To improve the typing speed of users. B. To cooperate with more computer makers. C. To give itself an advantage in competition. D. To sell the Windows 11 operating system. 9. What can be learned about the Copilot key? A. It is a great step forward. B. It will only be used by Dell. C. It will replace the space bar. D. It carries Microsoft’s logo. 10. Which company has the biggest influence on the broader PC market? A. Apple. B. Google. C. Microsoft. D. Dell. 11. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Microsoft’s New AI Key Is a Big Change to Keyboards B. Google Plans to Release New Features for Its Search Key C. Apple’s Updated Command Key Is Set to Change Keyboard Design D. The New Generation of Smartphones Has Advanced AI Capabilities D There could be a new competitor for the heaviest animal that ever lived. While today’s blue whale has long held the title, scientists have dug up fossils from an ancient animal that could tip the scales. Researchers described the species, named Perucetus colossus, or “the colossal whale from Peru” — in the journal Nature. Each vertebra (椎骨) weighs over 220 pounds (100 kilograms) and its ribs (肋骨) measure nearly 5 feet (1.4 meters) long. The bones were discovered more than a decade ago. An international team spent years digging them out of the side of a steep, rocky slope in the Ica desert, a region in Peru that was once underwater and is known for its rich sea fossils. The results: 13 vertebrae from the whale’s backbone, four ribs and a hip bone. They calculated that the ancient animal weighed somewhere between 94 and 375 tons (85 and 340 metric tons). The biggest blue whales found have been within that range-at around 200 tons (180 metric tons). Its body stretched to around 66 feet (20 meters) long. Blue whales can be longer-with some growing to more than 100 feet (30 meters) in length. This means the newly discovered whale was possibly the heaviest animal ever, study author Alberto Collareta said, but it was most likely not the longest animal ever. It weighs more in part because its bones are much denser and heavier than a blue whale’s bones, study author Eli Amson explained. Those super-dense bones suggest that the whale may have spent its time in shallow, coastal waters, the authors said. Other coastal residents, like manatees, have heavy bones to help them stay close to the seafloor. Without the skull (头骨), it’s hard to know what the whale was eating to sustain such a huge body, Amson said. It’s possible that Perucetus colossus was searching for food along the seafloor, researchers said, or eating up tons of shellfish and other tiny sea creatures in the water. “But I wouldn’t be surprised if this thing actually fed in a totally different way that we would never imagine,” paleontologist Hans Thewissen said. 12. What does the underlined part “tip the scales” in paragraph I probably mean? A. Reduce the effect. B. Change the situation. C. Provide the evidence. D. Make it reasonable. 13. What can we learn about the bones? A. They were from one whale. B. They were in perfect condition. C. They were similar to other fossils. D. They were made up of different parts. 14. What do researchers conclude about Perucetus colossus from their research? A. It was probably the longest whale due to its dense bones. B. It was probably more adapted to deep ocean environments. C. It probably fed on large sea mammals in open waters. D. It probably had a similar habitat to manatees. 15. What does Hans Thewissen suggest about the whale’s feeding method? A. It frequently changed over time. B. It was similar to that of modern whales. C. It primarily targeted tiny organisms in the water. D. It may have had a completely unexpected feeding strategy. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Many people have such a friend — one who understands and empathizes with them; one who always knows what to say when they are upset; one who they feel comfortable unburdening themselves to. They’ve been inseparable since childhood, experiencing life’s ups and downs together. Whether they were tackling projects or exploring possibilities, their teamwork was always perfect. They were not just friends; they were each other’s rock. Next month, Lucas was about to celebrate his twentieth birthday, and Ethan was determined to make it an unforgettable occasion. He knew how much Lucas had always dreamed of owning a classic motorbike-a piece of machinery that would turn heads wherever it went. To make this dream come true, Ethan had been secretly searching for the perfect motorbike for months. Ethan’s search led him to distant town where an auction (拍卖) was taking place. He spent countless hours researching and attending local motorbike shows, trying to find the ideal motorbike that could match Lucas’ taste. Finally, he discovered an amazing classic motorbike at an auction that was exactly what Lucas had always wanted. It was a beautiful 1960s classic one, shining with chrome (铬合金) accents and a special classic design. With a mix of excitement and anxiety, Ethan made his bid (出价) at the auction. His heart raced with every increase in the price. The anticipation was almost unbearable, but in the end, he won the auction. Ethan was excited-he secured the perfect birthday gift for Lucas. The next step was to transport the motorbike back to their city. Ethan decided to drive it himself, eager to surprise Lucas personally. So on a sunny morning, he set off, feeling the wind in his hair and the powerful roar of the engine. The journey was initially smooth, and Ethan enjoyed every moment, imagining Lucas’ reaction when he would finally see the motorbike. However, the weather took a dramatic turn in just a few minutes. A sudden thunderstorm rolled in, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and near-zero visibility. The road became dangerous, and Ethan struggled to keep control of the motorbike. The whole body was thrown to the ground, the clothes were stained with mud, and the originally smooth skin was also scratched by the gravel.
