The warmth of the family gathering has always been a beacon (in my life,a
constant source of strength and happiness. Those moments, full of love and laughter, have
shaped who I am today and continue to influence my outlook on life. The power of
togetherness is a lesson I learned early on,and it's a principle I carry with me every day.
When we were growing up,our family had a valuable tradition that filled our lives with
joy and anticipation.Every Saturday evening,we would set off to visit our extended family,
and the excitement was obvious. The pleasant smell of freshly baked goods would waft
through the air, signaling our approach to Aunt Lucille's warm and welcoming home.As the
famous biscuits attracted us,my sister and I,unable to contain our excitement, would
repeatedly ask,“Are we there yet?”l
At home,we were accustomed to sandwiches, but Aunt Lucille's biscuits were a different
kind of glee. After eating every last biscuit,we came to the backyard where the night sky
unfolded above us.There,we gathered around, drinking sweet tea,as the melodic sound of
guitars by Henri and Beau created a symphony that resonated with the love and unity of our
family. These evenings were more than just a break from the routine;they were a celebration
of our bond.
【高二英语第2页(共8页)川
As the years went by,these gatherings became a place where we could escape the worries
of the world and simply be with one another. The stories shared, the laughter, and the quiet
moments of connection have left an indelible mark on my heart. They have taught me the
importance of cherishing the time we have with our loved ones, for these are the moments
that truly matter in life. The impact of these family times is great and I will always cherish it
and try my best to pass it on to future generations.

Animals have developed many impressive skills to sleep under tough conditions. Some
seals sleep while they hunt on the sea floor.Frigate birds sleep in the air during long flights.
Now,a new study finds that reindeer (can sleep while eating.
Reindeer live in the far North. There, the sun'can shine around the clock in summer and
food is plentiful.Reindeer get busy eating it and chewing(咀嚼)the cud(反刍的食物).
Finding time to sleep among all the cud chewing might be tough. But what if the reindeer
could sleep as they chew?To check this, neuroscientist Melanie Furrer and chronobiologist
Sara Meier stuck electrodes on reindeer.
Electrodes detected brain waves typical of non-REM (rapid eye movement)sleep when
the reindeer were chewing cud.The reindeer's chewing motion made it hard to tell whether
the signal was like that of regular sleep."We couldn't go into detail by looking only at the
brain waves, because this chewing disturbs them,"says Furrer.
Other signs, however, helped confirm the reindeer really were asleep."For one thing,
the reindeer were calm while chewing. In fact, they often had their eyes closed. They were in
a very relaxed state that resembles the body position of non-REM sleep,"Furrer notes.
Chewing reindeer were also harder to disturb. They were less likely to look over at noise
made by a nearby reindeer.Plus, when the reindeer were kept awake, they needed catch-up
recovery sleep. But time spent chewing decreased how much time they spent in recovery sleep.
Together, these evidences show that reindeer can sleep while chewing, says neurobiologist
Niels Rattenborg. Some animals, such as dolphins, sleep with only one side of their brain at a
time. But reindeer seem to sleep with both sides of their brains while chewing."Studying

Artificial intelligence (AI)technology may soon be a useful tool for doctors. It may help
them better understand and treat diseases like breast cancer in ways that were never before
possible.
Rishi Rawat teaches AI at the University of Southern California's (USC)Clinical Science
Center in Los Angeles. He is part of a team of scientists who are researching how Al and
够
machine learning can more easily recognize cancerous growths in the breast.
Rawat provides information about cancer cells to a computer. He says,"This data helps
the machine learn. You can put the data into machines and they will learn the patterns and the
pattern recognition that is important to making decisions."
David Agus is another USC researcher. He believes that machines are not going to take
the place of doctors. He says,"Computers will not treat patients, but they will help make
certain decisions and look for things that the human brain can't recognize by itself."
Once a confirmed cancerous growth is removed, doctors still have to treat the patient to
reduce the risk of cancer returning. The form of treatment depends on the kind of cancer.
Currently, researchers take a thin piece of tissue, put it on a small piece of glass and add color
to better see the cells. That process could take days or even longer.Scientists say AI can do
something better than just count cells.Through machine learning,it can recognize complex
patterns,or structures, and learn how the cells are organized. The hope is that machines will
soon be able to make a quick identification of cancer that is free of human mistakes.
【高二英语第4页(共8页)】
Agus adds,"All of a sudden,we have the computing power to really do it in real time.
We didn't have the computing power to do this several years ago,but now it's all changed."
The USC's researchers are now only studying breast cancer. But doctors predict AI will
one day make a difference in all forms of cancer.
12.What is the key to the learning of AI according to the text?
A.The patterns of machines.
B.The input of data.
C.Computers'recognition ability.
D.Scientists'continuous research.
13.What is the advantage of AI in identifying cancer compared to traditional practices?
A.It will become more effective.

Outdoor play is beneficial to children beyond the physical activities it provides. It helps
them socialize, understand their bodies better and enjoy the outdoors.16 While this is a
lot of time to a daily schedule, the activities will contribute to the physical and emotional
health of children.
17 There is scientific evidence that playing outside improves health, and children of
all ages loving it.The more time children spend in nature, the more likely they are to grow up
to be good stewards of our planet.Sunny days not only make outdoor play more enjoyable for
children but also contribute to their overall physical and mental well-being.
Nowadays, the amount of time children spend engaging with a device is a key reason why
outdoor time should be a scheduled activity.Scheduling time to actively play outdoors sets a
natural limit on the amount of time children can spend on a device. It can reduce the risks of a
sedentary(久坐的)lifestyle,18
Knowing why outdoor activities are important to children's development is the first step
to prioritizing(优先考虑)them in children's schedule,._l9_To find ideas for places you

As a teacher,I've always believed in the importance of teaching my students more than
just academics. However,I was growing increasingly concerned about a new problem:plastic
waste.I often noticed my students casually throwing away plastic bottles and wrappers
around the school grounds. It pained me to see the beautiful campus littered, and I knew that
lecturing them about environmental responsibility wasn't enough. They needed to see and feel
the impact firsthand.
One Friday afternoon, after witnessing another pile of plastic waste near the playground,
I decided to take action.I called a meeting with my class and shared my concerns."This
Saturday,"I announced,"we're going on a field trip, but it won't be to the usual places.
We're going to spend a day collecting rubbish in the city."
The students'reactions were mixed.Complaints erupted immediately."Why do we have
to pick up rubbish?Isn't this someone else's job?"Sofia shouted.Emily added,"It's going to
be so hot this weekend!Do we really have to?"
I took a deep breath and tried to inspire them."Think about it,"I said,"each bottle or
wrapper you pick up can be recycled into something useful. Moreover,we're helping to keep
our city clean. It's a good way to show respect for our community and our planet, isn't it?"
I saw a few doubtful faces,but also some nods.Sofia hesitated before saying,"Well,I
guess it does sound important."
On Saturday morning, the students gathered at the school, equipped with gloves and
rubbish bags. There were still some complaints about the heat and the task ahead as we
boarded the bus.The city center, usually active, awaited us with its unfortunate blanket of
litter.
Upon arrival,I split them into small groups and assigned each a section of the streets to
clean. The students looked around, their faces tightening into frowns as they saw rubbish
scattered in every direction."This is a lot more than I thought,"Emily sighed, looking at the
piles of rubbish.
