Bright and early on the morning of our first full day in Antarctica, L’Austral’s Captain Fabien’s voice woke us up as it came through a loudspeaker. If we looked outside right now, he said, we’d see a beautiful sea of icebergs in the golden sunlight. My sister and I jumped out of bed, staring in amazement as we sailed past giant pieces of ice. In the distance, we spotted a group of humpback whales feeding on smaller fishes. Next door, my parents were also waking up to the sights of a new day in Antarctica. Over breakfast, my sister and I excitedly told them about the whales we saw from our room that morning.
You might not immediately think of “family vacation” when talking about a trip to Antarctica, but tour companies like Adventures by Disney are changing that. The company offers guided group trips to destinations across all seven continents in the world.
Our adventure started when we flew to Buenos Aires and explored the beautiful Argentine capital for a day. After leaving Buenos Aires, we flew to Ushuaia on an Adventures by Disney plane. Then, it was the journey toward the Drake Passage. After a speedy Drake Passage crossing, we reached Antarctica early, adding a half day to our scheduled four days on and around the continent.
To those unfamiliar with Adventures by Disney, the fact that you can experience Antarctica — the most distant, extreme continent — with Disney might be surprising. During the trip, there were thoughtful acts, from stamped postcards to send from an Antarctica post office to a champagne (香槟) party on our final stop of the journey. Adventures by Disney truly thought of everything for us. Antarctica is a life-changing destination packed with experiences that can’t be copied. We experienced seasickness when travelling across the Drake Passage, hiked up ice hills alongside lovely animals, and had a taste of champagne. And honestly, it’s going to be hard for the next family trip we may take to compete.
4. How did the family cross the Drake Passage?
A. By private plane. B. By cruise ship. C. By ferry. D. By helicopter.
5. What happened first on the author’s journey?
A. They flew to Ushuaia.
B. They passed through the Drake Passage.
C. They travelled around Buenos Aires.
D. They hiked up ice hills alongside lovely animals.
6. What can we infer about their travel from the last paragraph?
A. The author might feel bad when crossing the Drake Passage.
B. The author was the most impressed by the champagne party.
C. The author believes that their next travel will be more thrilling.
D. The author thought an Antarctica post office should be established.
7. Which can serve as the best title for the text?
A. An Antarctic Expedition: Comfort and Adventure Combined
B. A Family’s Antarctic Journey: Memories of a Lifetime
C. Scientific Exploration: A Family’s Antarctic Mission
D. Wildlife Discovery: Exploring Antarctica’s Animal Kingdom

From Crisis to Community Currency
The financial crisis of 2008 sent shockwaves throughout many countries in the Eurozone, and indeed the world. One of the hardest hit nations was Greece. For many Greeks this meant being thrown onto the breadline or worse still, plunging below the line of poverty. For others, the credit crunch (信贷紧缩) prevented them from using credit cards as their debts mounted. While most people felt hopeless, many decided to take the bull by the horns.
When residents of the small town of Volos found themselves struggling to afford even essential items in euros, what they did was to come up with an alternative currency. They pay for the goods in TEM, TEM being a local alternative currency that people can earn by offering their services or goods to others.
The TEM system, which brings to mind the ancient bartering system, operates on an exchange basis. Members of the TEM community gain credit by doing jobs for other people or selling them their own produce. For example, by selling clothes in TEM at the market, a trader could get language or computer lessons in return. As one stall-holder at the market put it, “We have reached the bottom of our lives and we now have to think in a different way.”
But it’s not only at the local market that TEM is accepted. Even well-established local shops in Volos will accept both TEM and euros. In some cases, payment can be made in part euro and part TEM. Hard-up customers can, therefore, make more affordable purchases and store owners can cover their costs.
So, how does the system operate in practical terms? The system, which has been developed online, requires members to have TEM accounts. These accounts, which are credited when they earn TEM and debited when they make a purchase, are closely regulated by founding members of the TEM community.
But for those who feel that parallel currencies are too complicated a matter, they can turn to another organization called Peliti. 2002 was the year when Peliti was set up as a national network for the exchange of goods and services without money. Peliti differs from the TEM system as it works purely by bartering. So if, for example, you grow cucumbers and you want someone to cut your hair, you can find a hairdresser in your area who will agree to be paid in cucumbers!
These organizations prove that ordinary people can find a way to survive when the going gets tough. When you have nothing to lose, you have everything to gain from alternative ways of life.
8. In the context of the passage, the underlined phrase “to take the bull by the horns” most probably means “_________”.
A. to deal with the problem bravely
B. to avoid facing a difficult situation
C. to accept help from others when in trouble
D. to wait patiently for the situation to improve
9. Why was the TEM system created in Volos?
A. People feared that the euro would disappear.
B. Credit cards were no longer issued to Greeks.
C. A substitute currency for the euro had to be found.
D. Some people had difficulty paying for goods in euros.
10. According to the passage, the TEM currency can be used ________.
A. only at the market in Volos
B. in other countries of the Eurozone
C. in shops and at the market in Volos
D. in shops and markets throughout Greece
11. In comparison with the TEM system, the most significant difference of Peliti is that ________.

How to protect your privacy when you travel
It hasn’t been an easy year for the privacy of travelers, at least so far. Data leaks, surveillance (监视) worries and those troublesome cameras in airplane seatbacks and hotel rooms are enough to make passengers anxious.___16___ Fortunately, there are ways to safeguard your privacy on land and in the air. These tips can help you deal with these troubles.
___17___ “It’s not clever to declare on Facebook that you’re travelling to somewhere, reminding a wide range of people that your property is sitting empty,” says Danny McLoughlin. “That puts your security at risk.” Wait until you return to start posting vacation photos.
Some homeowners renting their residences may install security cameras. Travelers should find out if the hosts are required to disclose the presence of surveillance devices. If the rental comes with cameras, ensure they aren’t in a sensitive area by conducting a careful sweep.___18___
Although you can’t control how a hotel or airline handles—or mishandles—your data, you can take reasonable steps to ensure the information it has won’t get you into trouble. ___19___ But some of the worst data leaks happen when you’re staying at a hotel. For example, a hotel clerk sometimes asks for your name and then announces your room number after you’ve checked in. You’re better off handing the employee your ID when he or she asks for your name and asking him/her to write your room number on a piece of paper. Why? ___20___ Just to be sure, never leave the customer copy behind. You can destroy it later, but keep it under your control.
A It’s never been better.
B. Perhaps they shouldn’t be.
C. Never broadcast your journey on social media.
D. There are other people on the other side of the wall.
E. However, travelers are not powerless against these threats.
F. Some travelers only offer the bare minimum, such as a P.O.box instead of a home address.
G. Report anything doubtful to the host immediately—and if you don’t like what you hear, leave.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was doing homework with my friend Ollie at his home when he randomly started scribbling (乱画) a fish. But not just any fish. This fish was riding a skateboard and blowing a bubble that said “I’d rather be skating!”I laughed and drew a sea star saying “Quit fooling around and get to work!”
Just then, Ollie’s grandma Abuela and her friend Mr. Goldberg came into the kitchen. Mr. Goldberg was in charge of the local animal shelter. Abuela poured their tea and inquired about how things were going at the animal shelter. Mr. Goldberg sighed, shaking his head. He explained that not enough people were adopting pets, resulting in too many animals without homes.
Overhearing the conversation, Ollie offered to adopt some excitedly. But Abuela said that one noisy parrot was plenty for this house.
“Blue isn’t noisy,” defended Ollie. “He’s just musical.”
“I’d have a whole farm full of animals if I could,” I said. “But my parents say two cats and a hamster (仓鼠) are enough.”
Mr. Goldberg said he kept trying to attract people to adopt animals, but found it hard to get people’s attention these days. Ollie drew a sad whale, and I wrote the words “Please adopt me” in the shape of a whale spout (喷水). Mr. Goldberg took a look at our drawings and made favorable comments on them, saying that these clever talking animals just might grab people’s attention. And he asked us if we were willing to design a poster for his animal shelter, a proposal we happily accepted. We decided to draw some ideas on our own and meet up again the next afternoon.
That night, when I was sitting in the living room brainstorming ideas for the poster, my little brother brought in our hamster, Mr. Nibbles, to give him a little run-around time. He made a hamster playground out of couch pillows and Mr. Nibbles began to run around merrily.
Suddenly, an idea formed in my mind.

We decided to make both Mr. Nibbles and Blue the stars of the poster.

What’s more, we can offer one separate room for the student. As for me, I have a good command of English so that he can feel free to communicate with me in daily life. So I am convinced I will be a qualified host. If given the chance, I’ll invite him to join in my family get-together. Besides, we can show him around the city, getting him to know more about the real life and culture in China.
In a word, I’m eager to provide an impressive trip for the foreign friend. I hope you can take my application into consideration. Thank you in advance.
Yours,
Li Hua

Suddenly, an idea formed in my mind. Why not put Mr. Nibbles on the poster? I eagerly sketched out a design featuring Mr. Nibbles in a playful pose, promoting the joy of pet adoption, "Want a pet to play with? Go get one in the local animal shelter." I admired my work with great satisfaction. The next afternoon, Ollie came over with his notebook. His design was centered on his parrot, Blue, who was singing beautifully "Oh! Be our hero! Give shelter pets a chance to be loved!" We exchanged a smile and engaged in a discussion about the final draft of the poster.
We decided to make both Mr. Nibbles and Blue the stars of the poster. Combining my playful hamster and Ollie's melodious parrot, we created a vibrant and eye-catching design. After adding the final touches, we proudly presented our final creation to Mr. Goldberg. His faces lit up as he praised the creativity and heartfelt message behind our design. A couple of months later, Mr. Goldberg shared the exciting news that lots of people had come in after seeing the posters. And some of them decided to donate or adopt! We hadn't expected our poster would cause such a sensation, but we did know our small bit of help would create a meaningful ripple.
