A Glance of China’s Wonders Through Foreign Eyes
Alice: The Great Wall — A Proof of Human Creativity
Whenever I, an American history enthusiast, think of China, the first thing that comes to mind is the Great Wall. It’s not just a wall; it’s a symbol of architectural brilliance. Winding over 13,000 miles, it’s a great wonder that has stood the test of time. The view from the wall is breathtaking, with the mountains rolling out beneath you like a vast, ancient sea. It’s a place where you can almost hear the echoes (回响) of history, and it never fails to inspire admiration.
Ben: The Terracotta Army — A Brief Look at Imperial China
From a British historian’s viewpoint, the Terracotta Army (兵马俑) in Xi’an is a wealth of historical understanding. The life-sized soldiers, horses and chariots are an impressive display of the first emperor’s power and thorough attention to detail of ancient Chinese skilled workers. Each figure is unique, with different facial expressions and clothing, offering a window into the magnificence of the Qin Dynasty. It’s a place that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
Dylan: The Li River — A Painter’s Wonderland
As a French artist, I am fascinated by the graceful beauty of the Li River in Guilin. The river winds through limestone karsts, creating scenery that seems to have been from a Chinese painting. The reflections of the mountains on the calm water’s surface are charming. It’s a place that inspires quietness and creativity, a perfect spot to set up a painting stand and capture the essence (精髓) of China’s natural beauty.
Clara: The Giant Pandas — A Success Story of Protecting Wildlife
From an Australian environmental protector’s standpoint, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is a light of hope. The sight of these cute pandas in their semi-wild environments is heartwarming. It’s incredible to see the efforts made to protect and breed (繁殖) these adorable creatures, which are not only a symbol of China but also evidence of global efforts to protect wildlife. It’s a place that reminds us of our shared responsibility to protect our planet’s biodiversity.
1. What do both Alice and Ben want to convey?
A. A sense of wonder and respect for history. B. Admiration for ancient skilled workers
C A serious concern about the war and peace. D. Regret for the long-lost soldiers.
2. What does Dylan think of the Li River?
A. Its water is shallow enough for a cool bath.
B. Mountains around it are the most attractive

From the moment we wake up and check the messages on our smartphones we’re exposed to text design. Throughout our day, storefronts (店面) and websites announce themselves through the typefaces (字体) they use. Adonian Chan, a 33-year-old Hong Kong graphic designer, calls the different texts a “visual landscape”.
In his hometown, signs written in traditional Chinese characters can be found around every corner. One calligraphy style, above all, has come to represent Hong Kong: Beiwei Kaishu, which has its origins in 4th-century China. After World War II, Beiwei Kaishu was used widely in Hong Kong signs, partly because it is highly recognizable, even from far distances.
But with the appearance of LED signs and computer-produced typefaces, signs written in the style were disappearing from Hong Kong. As a result, few designers working today are aware of the Beiwei Kaishu style.
In 2016, Chan asked a master of calligraphy in Hong Kong to teach him to write in the Beiwei Kaishu style. He then started the process of digitizing (数字化) the characters. He first wrote the characters on paper with a brush and ink. Next, he made a pencil sketch. Finally, he recreated the characters digitally, using a computer program called Glyphs.
One of the main challenges when digitizing the ancient calligraphy is striking a balance between the artistic expression and the need of design, says Chan. He can complete two characters a day, depending on their complexity, and is aiming to digitize 6,000 characters.
Chan says his project is more than preserving a centuries-old writing style and that he sees himself as building on the work of previous generations. He has named his typeface Beiwei Zansyu and hopes it will eventually appear on phones and computers.
4. Why was Beiwei Kaishu popular in Hong Kong after World War II?
A. It had a long history. B. It could be seen clearly.
C. It was a symbol of Hong Kong. D. It fitted in the “visual landscape”.
5. What leads to the disappearance of Beiwei Kaishu?
A. Its pattern. B. City development.
C. Its designers. D. New technologies.
6. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. Beiwei Zansyu will be available soon.
B. Beiwei Zansyu looks great on the phone.
C. Chan’s project needs a lot of time and efforts.
D. Preserving the ancient style is Chan’s only purpose.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Adonian Chan?
A. Capable and determined. B. Creative and energetic.
C. Talented and hard-working. D. Generous and ambitious.

Henan TV show explores the essence of Qingming culture
Qingming is both a solar term and a traditional festival, marked by customs such as tomb-sweeping, spring outings, and offering blessings. It embodies the vitality of spring, the renewal of hope, and the cycle of life itself.
Premiering tonight at 19:30 on Henan TV, 2025 Adventures on Qingming Festival offers a poetic interpretation of this timeless tradition. Featuring an exceptional lineup, the show will deliver a breathtaking audiovisual experience, guiding audiences through a threefold journey of life, memory, and nature — an emotional resonance that transcends time and space.
Inspired by the “Three Phenological Signs of Qingming”, an ancient Chinese observation of seasonal transitions, the program weaves these natural changes into its narrative. Through a blend of modern and traditional performances, the festival’s cultural depth is reimagined in a cinematic and philosophical light.
The dance performance A Dream of the Enchanted Melody unfolds in three chapters — Emergence, Rhythm, and Eternity — symbolizing the rebirth of spring and the journey of life. At its heart is a mythical, melodious bird, long dormant in Dunhuang murals, awakening to spring’s arrival. Dressed in flowing green, the dancers bridge ancient Buddhist wisdom with earthly renewal, embodying the revival of all living things.
The untamed energy of spring, vividly captured by renowned author Shi Tiesheng, bursts to life in Cocoon-Break, a dynamic street dance showcase. Blending the rhythmic intensity of street dance with the precision of Wing Chun martial arts, the performance embodies the fusion of tradition and modernity, illustrating how the essence of Chinese culture thrives in the vitality of a new generation.
A youthful, electrifying anthem, Sunflower sets the stage ablaze with pure energy. A teenage rock band, guided by teacher Gu Ya’s childlike sincerity and aunt Maizi’s free-spirited optimism, delivers a performance that blooms with courage and passion. Their music encourages all to embrace life with brightness, cherish everyday moments, and pursue dreams fearlessly.
Blending creativity with dynamic visuals, Seeking Blossoms by the Riverside offers a play ful folk-style skit. Traditional-style blogger Chen Xiyue, appearing as a flower girl, and delivery boy Song Xiaoge step into history, offering flowers — and inspiration — to legendary artists. Through a lighthearted, playful narrative, the performance unveils the untold stories behind artistic masterpieces, celebrating the timeless lineage of Chinese art.
The Chinese-style dance Roaming Youth provides an immersive glimpse into poet Bai Juyi’s reflective twilight years. Adapted in part from Looking for Him in the Crowd, an epic poetry and art drama, the performance balances lyrical grace with rhythmic strength. Against the backdrop of ancient tea rituals — roasting, storing, water selection, and brewing — young dancers bring Qingming’s tea culture to life. The performance opens with a dramatic narration by Xu Tao, a national first-class actor and renowned reciter, unfurling like a vivid scroll painting of spring’s renewal.

Urban green spaces, such as parks, gardens, and tree-lined streets, have long been recognized for their aesthetic (审美的) and environmental benefits. However, recent research highlights their significant impact on mental health, particularly in densely (密集地) populated cities. A study conducted by researchers at the University of Cambridge analyzed data from over 10,000 urban residents across 15 cities worldwide, revealing a strong correlation between access to green spaces and improved mental well-being.
The study found that individuals living within 500 meters of a green space reported lower levels of stress, anxiety, and depression compared to those without such access. Researchers attribute (归因于) this to several factors. First, green spaces provide opportunities for physical activity, such as walking, jogging, or cycling, which are known to reduce stress hormones and boost mood. Second, exposure to nature has a calming effect on the brain, reducing mental fatigue (精神疲劳) and improving concentration. Third, green spaces foster social interactions, creating a sense of community and belonging that can alleviate feelings of loneliness.
Interestingly, the study also revealed that the quality of green spaces matters more than their size. Well-maintained parks with diverse vegetation, seating areas, and recreational facilities had a greater positive impact than larger but poorly maintained areas. This suggests that urban planners should prioritize the design and upkeep of green spaces to maximize their mental health benefits.
Despite these findings, the study also identified challenges. In many cities, green spaces are unevenly distributed, with wealthier neighborhoods having better access than low-income areas. This inequality highlights the need for policies that ensure equitable (公平合理的) access to green spaces for all residents.
The researchers recommend several strategies to address these issues. These include increasing investment in urban green infrastructure, integrating green spaces into urban planning, and promoting community involvement in maintaining local parks. By prioritizing green spaces, cities can not only enhance mental health but also address broader environmental challenges, such as air pollution and climate change.
12. What did the study find about individuals living near green spaces?
A. They had higher levels of stress. B. They preferred indoor activities.
C. They were less physically active. D. They enhanced mental health.
13. What does the underlined word “alleviate” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Reduce. B. Increase. C. Ignore. D. Create.
14. How is the text mainly developed?
A. By narrating personal experiences. B. By criticizing urban planning policies.
C. By comparing different types of green spaces. D. By presenting research findings and their effects.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Designing Effective Urban Green Spaces
B The Multifaceted Benefits of Urban Green Spaces
C. Green Spaces: A Key to Enhancing Mental Health
D. Strategies for Equitable Access to Urban Nature

It’s a place that inspires quietness and creativity, a perfect spot to set up a painting stand and capture the essence (精髓) of China’s natural beauty.

From the moment we wake up and check the messages on our smartphones, we’re exposed to text design.
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. C 7. A

The Students’ Union
【答案】Dear fellow students,
Nowadays, the environmental pollution is becoming increasingly serious and global warming causes frequent extreme weather. Therefore, I’d like to appeal to all of us to take an active part in protecting the environment.
Everyone can contribute to a better environment and we students can also do our part. Firstly, it is necessary that we participate in voluntary work such as planting trees and picking up rubbish. Additionally, it is strongly suggested that we live a low-carbon life. For example, it makes sense to turn off the taps, the lights and other electrical appliances when we are not using them. Furthermore, we should attach great importance to garbage sorting and recycling in our daily life, through which we can reduce pollution and conserve natural resources.
Every effort counts. Let’s join hands to make our planet a greener one!
