Montreal has a unique culture, with its mixture of French and English. If you want to visit one of the best cities in North America, this is the place for you.

My husband Robert and I had volunteered to help build an irrigation (灌溉) system for bananas in Zambia. The Heart of Africa Mission is run by local Zambians, with a focus on community development. We were there to share our agricultural (农业的) experience and knowledge with the African farmers.
We left snow-covered Alberta, Canada in January. We spent the next four weeks working side by side with the local Zambians in a banana plantation (种植园). The banana plantation would help make the Heart of Africa Mission self-supporting. It would also teach banana farming to the students there. Students would go on to teach others. It has done that and more. Through the jobs created, several families now have food, education for their children, and enough housing. The plantation is producing well and is a source of great pride for all who work there.
My husband worked hard at building the irrigation system. But the story he tells most often is of the young man who stopped us on one of our walks somewhere. He pointed to his bike, and laughing widely, told Robert, “Look, look, it still works.” Robert had repaired it for him. A bike in Zambia is like a truck in North America—necessary transportation for people and produce. Robert’s small effort made a big difference in this man’s life.
“We sure appreciate (感激) your sacrifice (牺牲),” our organizer often says. For us it was never a sacrifice, only an honor to have the chance to work in a place so far from our own, to be able to exchange ideas and thoughts. All this happened while living in a beautiful sunny country in the green of the rainy season, while at home in Alberta, the snow would cover the landscape (风景) for months. No, the volunteer work was never a sacrifice. It was only an honor.
4. What can we learn about the author from the first paragraph?
A. She likes to take adventures. B. She is probably an expert in agriculture.
C. She started the Heart of Africa Mission. D. She used to live in Africa for a long time.
5. Which of the following best describes the author’s volunteer job?
A. Costly. B. Tiring. C. Challenging. D. Fruitful.
6. Why did the young man stop the author and her husband?
A. To ask for help. B. To express his thanks.
C. To show his cycling skills. D. To tell them about his work.
7. Why did the author consider the volunteer work an honor?
A. It enabled her to work harder. B. It brought her public recognition.
C. It made her appreciate her life more. D. It allowed her to experience different things.
C
Some writers use idioms to “add color” to their writing, while others keep their text as simple as possible. In fact, while idioms may make your work appear confusing, using them correctly can explain the message and attract readers.
Including idioms in your writing is an effective way to make your work more creative. For example, if you are writing a text about money planning, you could say: “You should save your money.” Or, you can use an idiom such as “A penny saved is a penny earned.”
Idioms can also add humor to your writing in places where you may otherwise seem rude. For example, rather than writing about a character who is not smart, you could say “the lights are on, but nobody’s home.” The idiom tends to be softer and somewhat less impolite.
There are a number of idioms that can make a boring text more impressive Are you trying to show that you agree with someone? Perhaps you could say that you “see eye to eye.” Does this happen very rarely? Maybe it happens “once in a blue moon?”
Keep the list of idioms handy as you write so you can draw from that list and include the sayings in your writing where appropriate. Be careful not to “overdo” it. Too many idioms can be upset. Also, be sure that you know the correct meaning of the idiom before you use it in your writing. Not using it in the right context can confuse readers and cause some of them to lose interest in your work.
It is easier than you think to introduce idioms into your writing. Once you get familiar with a list of common idioms, you’ll discover that getting them on paper is “a piece of cake”.
8. Why do some writers use idioms in their writing?
A. Idioms can make their work formal. B. Writers want to use various writing ways.
C. Idioms can make their work attractive. D. Writings can read easier.
9. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A. Practice makes perfect. B. Great minds think alike.
C. Well begun is half done. D. Learn to walk before you run.
10. What does the underlined word probably mean?
A. Factual. B. Suitable. C. Difficult. D. Comfortable.
11. What’s the aim of the passage?
A. To explain idioms’ meanings in writing. B. To encourage proper idioms in writing.
C. To introduce more idioms to readers. D. To solve problems about idiom use.
D
What’s the first thing that pops into your mind when you think of wheat straw? Most people would probably just see it as a pile of waste in a farmer’s field. However, Wu Cui, an intangible cultural inheritor, can turn the straw left over from harvested wheat into beautiful and eye-catching functional artworks.
The earliest straw-weaving(草编的)products were discovered at Hemudu Cultural Ruins, a Neolithic cultural site located in eastern China’s Zhejiang province. The Book of Rites, one of the classical works of Confucianism, also records that there were already mats made of cattail grass and professional straw-weaving craftsmen during the Zhou Dynasty(c.11th century-256 BC).
Straw weaving is a method of making daily items or artworks. It was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008.
Wu explains the process of straw weaving: selection of materials is the first step of a complicated, time consuming and labor-intensive process that can take weeks, or even months, to complete. You need to sketch(索描)the piece on paper, which requires drawing skills. Next comes weaving, shaping and preserving of the work. Even by finishing that process, it does not mean that you will always create a good piece of work, and the hardest part is to make it lifelike.
In the past, woven straw items could be found almost in every household in the countryside, such as straw hats and straw shoes, because they were practical in everyday life. But due to the impact of industrialization, manufactured goods have replaced such products, which cause low profits, and there are only about 100 individuals engaging in the work across the country. “The world has changed, and craftsmen need to transcend(超越)practicality and pursue the beauty and artistry of straw culture to help the craft survive and thrive(茁壮成长),” Wu says.
From her perspective, straw weaving should respond to people’s needs and preferences, while still drawing inspiration from traditional culture, “Craftspeople should make a great effort to grasp the trends and opportunities of the times to create new and relevant products,” she says. When asked about her plans, Wu says she wants to dig deeper into local traditional culture and create cultural creative products by developing the straw-weaving technique.
12. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about straw-weaving products?
A. Their historic origins. B. Their cultural value.
C. Their major uses. D. Their producing process.
13. Which is the most difficult part for straw-weaving craftsmen according to Wu Cui?
A. Selecting suitable materials. B. Drawing sketches on paper.
C. Making the artworks vivid. D. Preserving finished products.
14. What can we learn from Wu Cui’s opinion according to the last paragraph?
A. Craftsmen should bring forth new ideas in the crafts based on traditional culture
B. Pursuing fashion should be the first preference for eraftspeople.
C. Local people benefit a lot from the straw—weaving techniques.
D. Straw-weaving products are out of favor with customers.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To explain the process of straw weaving. B. To present the future of a traditional culture.
C. To introduce a way to pursue the beauty and artistry. D. To propose a new means of crafting.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Right after I had my first son, I found myself with a surplus of baby formula (奶粉) I couldn’t use due to his stomach issues. Not wanting it to go to waste, I turned to a website for giving away items for free. Shortly afterward, a young woman from my small town reached out, expressing her desperate need for the formula. She explained that her husband had just passed away in an accident, leaving her in a difficult situation. Feeling a tug at my heart, immediately promised to save all the formula for her.
However, three days passed, and I heard nothing. I tried to connect her but failed. My husband suggested might be a cruel joke or maybe some sort of sick tricks. Unwilling to believe it, I decided to give it one last try.
This time I got through. In the telephone I could hear the tiredness and strain in her voice as she mentioned, she’d just managed to pay her phone bill and had to wait until she could find a way to get closer to town. It was clear she was struggling. Trying to keep my tone neutral, I offered to send the formula to her house. After an awkward silence, she agreed and provided her address.
Once I hung up, I felt compelled to do more than just provide the formula. We checked her address and discovered she lived in a desolate part of town. Her cottage was situated in the middle of the desert, far removed from any public transportation. Realizing how tough her situation must be, I went through my pantry (食品储藏室) fridge, and freezer, gathering anything we could spare. In total, we filled three bags and a laundry hamper with food and essentials.
When we arrived at her home the next day, she welcomed us inside, her face devoid (没有) of emotion. The sight that greeted me was heartbreaking: her living space was almost empty, with only a single couch and a bare kitchen. Even when we unloaded the items, she still seemed almost numb, as if life had drained all the color from her. Without a word, she simply nodded, turned away, and mechanically began making a bottle for her son, her movements slow and detached.

7. Why did the author consider the volunteer work an honor?
A. It enabled her to work harder. B. It brought her public recognition.
C. It made her appreciate her life more. D. It allowed her to experience different things.

There are a number of idioms that can make a boring text more impressive. Are you trying to show that you agree with someone?
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11. B

【答案】12. A 13. C 14. A 15. B

During the Spring Festival, I participated in making Chinese paper-cuttings. First, I selected a vivid pattern from a collection of samples.
In the telephone, I could hear the tiredness and strain in her voice as she mentioned, she’d just managed to pay her phone bill and had to wait until she could find a way to get closer to town.

【答案】范文
On the way back home, I couldn’t shake her from my mind. My heart ached for the young woman and her son, their plight echoing in my thoughts. Determined to offer more support, I started researching local resources and support networks that could assist her. I even reached out to a nearby charity organization, explaining her situation and pleading for their help. The response was overwhelming — clothes, toys, and even monetary donations poured in. Each contribution filled me with a sense of warmth and hope, as if we were all part of a larger, compassionate tapestry. Faced with the heartwarming contributions, I prayed that our small gestures would bring them a semblance of comfort and hope.
Several weeks later; the woman came to me. She was visibly different — her face brightened with a smile I hadn’t seen before and her eyes, once tired and strained, now sparkled with gratitude. She thanked me profusely, holding her son in her arms, looking much more at ease. “Thank you for restoring our faith in humanity. Your kindness has given us strength to keep going.” she said, her voice filled with gratitude. Her joy and relief were so genuine that it moved me deeply. Observing the positive transformation in her bestowed upon me a sense of gratification and strengthened my belief in the power of kindness and community backing.
