Chinese researchers have revealed the anti-cancer characteristic of neutrophils (中性粒细胞) — a type of white blood cells—and the related molecular regulation mechanism, providing new insights into cancer diagnosis and treatment. The discovery, made by researchers at the Shanghai Institute of Immunity and Infection under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Fudan University, was published in Cell on Tuesday.
Neutrophils are the most abundant white blood cells in the human body. As the first line of defence against infections, they play a key role in anti-infection immunity. The researchers collected neutrophils from 143 patients with 17 different types of cancer and analyzed them. They revealed that neutrophils can adopt at least 10 highly specialized and distinct functional states related to inflammation (炎症) , blood vessel formation and—most excitingly—presenting antigens (抗体) to activate powerful cancer-killing T cells.
“We were surprised to find such complexity and different roles within neutrophils, which have been ignored for so long,” said Zhang Xiaoming, a researcher at the Institute. “What is especially remarkable is their newly discovered capacity to act as antigen-presenting cells, gathering T cells against cancer. In addition, the abundance of antigen-presenting neutrophils is associated with improved condition across many cancer types revealed in this study,” he said.
“This completely changes how we perceive neutrophils in the context of cancer,” said Gao Qiang, a professor at Fudan University. “Now we know we could employ the diverse hidden identities of neutrophils to strengthen the effectiveness of immunotherapy (免疫疗法). We’re thrilled to further explore the potential benefits of these newly uncovered mechanisms in clines.”
The study emphasizes the value of single-cell sequencing approaches to reveal new functional dimension even within seemingly well-understood immune cells. Tapping into the hidden potential of neutrophils may provide new insights into cancer diagnosis and treatment.
24. How was the anti-cancer function of neutrophils discovered?
A. By referring to previous research.
B. By collecting and analyzing data.
C. By seeking guidance from experts.
D. By observing patients with inflammation.
25. Which of the following is a function of neutrophils?
A. Getting together T cells when needed.
B. Preventing the formation of antigens.
C Speeding up the blood flow.
D. Distinguishing different types of cancer.
26. What’s Gao Qiang’s attitude towards the new research?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Worried. D. Unclear.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Blood Cells Successfully Fight Against Severe Cancer
B. China Makes Great Progress in Fighting Against Diseases
C. Further Research Is Needed to Fight Against Cancer
D. Researchers Discover New Cancer-fighting Mechanism

Established earthquake warning systems provide at best just a minute or two of notice, leaving little time for preparedness. Decades of searching for a better warning sign-changes in the geochemistry of groundwater, electromagnetic effects in the upper atmosphere, and even changes in animal behavior-have failed. Many question whether such a precursor (先兆) even exists. This situation may change soon, as recent research is providing a glimmer of hope for improved earthquake prediction.
Researchers Quentin Bletery and Jean-Mathieu Nocquet from Cote d’Azur University in France collected data from over 90 earthquakes with magnitudes larger than 7 that had occurred in the past two decades. They focused on GPS station records near these quakes, which accurately captured land movement every 5 minutes with millimeter precision. They analyzed more than 3,000 time series of motion in the 48 hours leading up to the main ruptures (断裂).
They noticed that, in the first 46 hours, the records showed no significant features. However, during the 2 hours before the earthquake, they noticed signs of increasing movement along the fault zones (断层带). Essentially, there’s a slip between plates causing the land above them to move in a measurable, horizontal direction.
Could this be just a coincidence? The probability of this increase happening just before the quake and being unrelated is extremely low, and the researchers confirmed this by analyzing 100,000 random time windows in non-earthquake GPS data. The pattern occurred only 0.03% of the time in non-earthquake data.
While this precursor signal won’t be used for warnings anytime soon, officials from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) admit that this new study provides valuable insights into how to improve their warning systems-GPS data can grease the wheels of early earthquake warnings.
The researchers admit there are still a number of steps away from putting this precursor signal into use, particularly since detecting subtle signals at individual faults requires more GPS stations. But the biggest problem is that many of the world’s earthquake regions have no instrumentation. “We can’t realize the detection at the scale of one earthquake, so we cannot make predictions,” Bletery said.
28. What remains a tough problem for scientists?
A. Determining the magnitude of an earthquake.
B. Finding a way to detect earthquakes in early stages.
C. Measuring atmospheric changes during earthquakes.
D. Identifying animals’ possible responses to earthquakes.
29. What did the researchers find through their data analysis?
A. The chance of main ruptures occurring in fault zones.
B. The accuracy of GPS in recording land movement.
C. The existence of a two-hour precursory phase.
D. The horizontal slip within the first 46 hours.
30. What does the underlined part “grease the wheels of” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Distinguish. B. Contradict. C. Overmatch. D. Facilitate.
31. What holds back the practical application of the new findings?
A. The inaccessibility of precursor signals.
B. The complexity of updating GPS equipment.
C. The challenge of identifying earthquake regions.
D. The inconsistent slip patterns of different earthquakes.

A few days ago, I watched a video of myself talking in perfect Chinese. I’ve been studying the language on and off for only a few years, and I’m far from fluent. But there I was, pronouncing each character just as a native speaker would. “My favorite food is sushi,” I said — wo zui xihuan de shiwu shi shousi.
I’d created the video using software from a Los Angeles-based artificial-intelligence start-up called HeyGen. The technology, which only needs a single selfie and a script to generate deepfake videos of real people “saying” almost anything, is a testament (证明) to the advancements in AI language tools. This got me thinking about the declining interest in language learning with fewer students enrolling in foreign language courses and the decrease of English proficiency among young people in some places.
AI translation, integrated into social media and messaging platforms, seems to be everywhere. Even language-learning apps are using AI-generated content in their marketing. However, language translation is an art rather than a science. Something enormous will be lost in exchange for that convenience. As Anne, a Chinese translator said, “Building a ladder between widely different languages, such as Chinese and English, is sometimes as difficult as a doctor building a bridge in a patient’s heart,”
Language learning fosters cultural competency, a skill that AI cannot simply copy. Learning a different way to speak, read, and write helps people discover new ways to see the world. No machine can replace such a profound human experience. Deborah Cohn, a language professor, emphasizes that language learning is actually about understanding and connecting with different cultures; Instead of abandoning language courses in favor of AI, some educators advocate for emphasizing the intercultural aspects of language learning. Paula Krebs of the MLA points out that even with a “universal translator”, sometimes, the greater meaning of people’s utterance (言辞) remains a mystery.
In essence, while AI language tools offer convenience, they lack the depth and cultural insight that comes from human language learning. The challenge and beauty of learning a language are in understanding the cultural tapestry (织锦) that weaves through words, something AI has yet to achieve.
32. Why does the author give the example in paragraph 1?
A. To promote the language software.
B. To show off his Chinese language skills.
C. To prove learning a language is a wasted effort.
D. To encourage critical thinking about AI language tools.
33. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. AI translation deserves more attention.
B. Language apps play a key role in marketing.
C. Language translation is far beyond technology.
D. Learning a different language is an uphill battle.
34. What is the key benefit of learning a language according to the passage?
A. Better digital literacy.
B. Improved translation skills.
C. Deeper cultural confidence.
D. Effective intercultural interaction.
35 What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. AI language tools offer convenience.
B. AI facilitates language learning in terms of culture.
C. AI is far from perfect in helping language understanding.
D. AI has achieved success in the development of language learning tools.

When Zhou Longshan started filming birds 10 years ago at Baiyangdian Lake, a major wetland in northern China, he just wanted to record his favorite species—egrets. Then, things snowballed. In the following years, the teacher became a bird-watcher, a volunteer ranger at the lake, a photographer documenting over 110 bird species and an educator popularizing bird-related information among students.” Sharing bird-protection knowledge with children can make them feel the beauty of their hometown and the importance of birds, and help them cultivate the habit of protecting birds from an early age,” he says.
Over time, Zhou’s interest in birds continued to grow. In 2021, he was appointed as a bird observer by the natural resources bureau (自然资源局) of Anxin county, responsible for conducting regular patrols (巡逻) and popularizing bird-related knowledge. To monitor birds, Zhou would ride a bike to Baiyangdian almost every day before dawn, whatever the weather. He would record the birds appearing at the lake, along with their locations, where they fed and when they migrated, thus providing reference data for staff members of the natural resources bureau of Anxin county.
Although Zhou takes delight in the role, there are still many challenges. Sometimes, he has to navigate earth embankments on his bike. One summer day in 2021, he fell into a ditch with water more than a meter deep, resulting in water damage to his cellphone.
However, these difficult episodes have not undermined Zhou’s love of birds. Over the years, he has taken more than 100,000 pictures of the birds at Baiyangdian. During his spare time, he reads books on China’s birds, talks with other enthusiasts and university professors, and updates his WeChat official account to introduce Baiyangdian to a wider audience.
These days, Zhou’s schedule is growing busier. In addition to his regular patrols near the lake, he is sometimes invited to local schools to give lectures, keeping students informed about birds and how to protect them. Zhou will retire next month. “I will continue patrolling the lake and photographing the birds to contribute to the protection of birds in my hometown,” he says.
36. Why did Zhou start taking photos of birds at first?
A. To share bird-protection knowledge with children.
B. To cultivate the habit of protecting birds.
C. To keep track of his favorite species.
D. To become a volunteer ranger at the lake.

A. He rode a bike to Baiyangdian every day before dawn.
B. He went to Baiyangdian in all weathers.
C. He recorded all the birds along with their locations.
D. He provided reference data for natural resources bureau.
38. What can we infer about Zhou’s job as a bird observer?
A. He didn’t meet any challenges while doing the job.
B He reads books about birds all over the world in his free time.
C He is invited to local schools to give lectures every day.
D. He uses social media to introduce Baiyangdian to more people.
39. Which of the following best describes Zhou?
A. Enthusiastic and controlling. B. Knowledgeable and persistent.
C. Farsighted and reserved. D. Considerate and stubborn.

W: Hello, everyone. Nice to see you again. In yesterday’s class, we learned about some public holidays in Britain. Today, let’s talk about some public holidays in the United States. Well, back home in the States on the fourth Thursday of November we have a public holiday called Thanksgiving when people don’t go to work and traditionally spend the day with their family eating a large meal including turkey and some pies. You may wonder how that idea got started. Well, the actual idea is similar to some festivals in other countries but it’s related to the beginnings of North America, when the first Englishmen successfully arrived in 1620 in what is now the state of Massachusetts. Their first winter was difficult and half of them died from disease and hunger. That doesn’t sound like anything to celebrate, right? But in the following spring of their arrival, the Native Americans taught them how to grow corn and pumpkin, as well as how to hunt and fish. In the autumn of this year, after a successful food supply, the Englishmen planned a great dinner and invited the local chief and 90 natives, who brought popcorn with them, which of course was totally unknown in Europe. This is the first Thanksgiving in American history. And many ways of celebrating the first Thanksgiving have been handed down to future generations.

C. Speeding up the blood flow.
D. Distinguishing different types of cancer.
26. What’s Gao Qiang’s attitude towards the new research?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Worried. D. Unclear.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Blood Cells Successfully Fight Against Severe Cancer
B. China Makes Great Progress in Fighting Against Diseases
C. Further Research Is Needed to Fight Against Cancer
D. Researchers Discover New Cancer-fighting Mechanism
B 25. A 26. A 27. D

D The horizontal slip within the first 46 hours.
B 29. C 30. D 31. A

根据第一段“Decades of searching for a better warning sign-changes in the geochemistry of groundwater, electromagnetic effects in the upper atmosphere, and even changes in animal behavior-have failed. Many question whether such a precursor (先兆) even exists. (几十年来,人们一直在寻找更好的预警信号——地下水地球化学的变化、高层大气的电磁效应,甚至动物行为的变化——但都以失败告终。许多人甚至质疑这样的前兆是否存在。)”可知,科学家们仍然面临的难题是找到早期阶段监测地震的方法,故选B。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。 根据第三段“They noticed that, in the first 46 hours, the records showed no significant features. However, during the 2 hours before the earthquake, they noticed signs of increasing movement along the fault zones (断层带). (他们注意到,在最初的46个小时里,记录没有显示出明显的特征。然而,在地震发生前的2小时内,他们注意到沿断裂带移动增加的迹象。)”可知,研究人员通过数据分析发现地震发生前2小时前兆的存在。故选C。
【30题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词上文“While this precursor signal won't be used for warnings anytime soon, officials from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) admit that this new study provides valuable insights into how to improve their warning systems- (虽然这种前兆信号短期内不会用于预警,但美国地质调查局(USGS)的官员承认,这项新研究为如何改进他们的预警系统提供了有价值的见解)”故推测下文意思是GPS数据可以推动早期地震预警的进展,所以grease the wheels of意思是推动进展,故选D。
根据最后一段“The researchers admit they're still a number of steps away from putting this precursor signal into use, particularly since detecting subtle signals at individual faults requires more GPS stations. But the biggest problem is that many of the world's earthquake regions have no instrumentation. “We can't realize the detection at the scale of one earthquake, so we cannot make predictions,” Bletery said. (研究人员承认,他们距离将这种前兆信号投入使用还有很长的路要走,特别是因为在单个断层处检测细微信号需要更多的GPS站。但最大的问题是,世界上许多地震地区没有仪器。“我们无法在一次地震的规模上实现探测,所以我们无法做出预测,”布莱里说。)”由此可知因为很多地震地区没有仪器,所以我们很难监测前兆信号,也就是前兆信号的不可接近性阻碍了新发现的实际应用,故选A。

35. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. AI language tools offer convenience.
B. AI facilitates language learning in terms of culture.
C. AI is far from perfect in helping language understanding.
D. AI has achieved success in the development of language learning tools.
D 33. C 34. D 35. C

36 Why did Zhou start taking photos of birds at first?

根据空前“Complaining is often looked at as a negative, but if you perfect it great things can happen.(抱怨通常被看作是消极的,但如果你完善它,美好的事情就会发生。)”可知虽然抱怨被认为是不好的,但是如果你对其进行完善的话,其实抱怨也会让好事发生,根据空后“Articles and experts insist that too much complaining will lower your empathy (共情) and stop you achieving your dream and living the life you want.(文章和专家坚持认为,太多的抱怨会降低你的同理心,阻止你实现你的梦想,过上你想要的生活。)” Actually, complaining has a bad reputation.(事实上,抱怨的名声不好。)
根据空前“Once we discover how to effectively integrate it, great things can happen.Dr Robin Kowalski found those who complain with the hopes of achieving a certain result tend to be happier.(一旦我们发现如何有效地整合它,美好的事情就会发生。Robin Kowalski博士发现,那些为了达到某种目的而抱怨的人往往更快乐。)”可知如果我们为了达到某个目标而进行合理的抱怨,那么我们会变得更开心,由此可以推出抱怨确实有一些作用,所以空处应该讲抱怨的用途是什么,E项Complaining does serve as a real purpose in our lives.(抱怨确实是我们生活中的一个真正的目的。)
根据空前“ It plays a very important role in our lives and is a skill that can be extremely effective.(它在我们的生活中扮演着非常重要的角色,是一种非常有效的技能。)”可知抱怨在生活中确实很重要,根据空后“So here are some ways to deal with the art of complaining in a skillful way.(因此,这里有一些巧妙地处理抱怨艺术的方法。)” Our goal is not to remove complaining, but make it more useful and effective.(我们的目标不是消除抱怨,而是让它更有用、更有效。)
根据空前“Work out who can give you a hand.(找出谁能帮到你。)”可知我们要找到能帮助自己的人,根据空后“Pick those who can empathize with you or help with your goal.(选择那些能同情你或帮助你实现目标的人。)” Don’t complain to the same people.(不要向同一个人抱怨。)
根据空后“Whatever your complaining, it’ll make for your improvement when used correctly and effectively.(无论你抱怨什么,如果正确有效地使用,它都会有助于你的进步。)” Socialize with others to make complaints accessible.(与他人交往,让抱怨成为可能。)”
