The World’s Most Striking Tourist Destinations
Adventurers, grab your passports because there’s nothing relaxing about these holiday spots.
Half Dome,Yosemite National Park,USA
The 1500-metre climb to the top of Half Dome is the most difficult of Yosemite Valley’s day hikes, and it’s the last 120 meters that are the most dangerous. While there are ladder-like metal cables (缆绳) to help you reach the summit without rock climbing equipment, falling off them could be deadly.
Cliffs of Moher, Ireland
With breathtaking views of the Aran Islands and Galway Bay the Cliffs of Moher is one of Ireland’s most popular tourist attractions. However, it’s also one of the most dangerous, and one misstep at the edge could result in a 213-metre fall into the Atlantic. The safest way to experience the beauty of the cliffs is from the official path or one of three viewing platforms.
Mount Everest, Nepal
Visiting Mount Everest attracts around 1200 climbers each year. However, only about half ever reach the summit, and a few will die trying, according to the New York Times. By now, there have been 304 deaths, according to alanarnette.com.
Trift Bridge Switzerland
Believe it or not, the Trift Bridge in the Swiss Alps Mountains is much safer than it looks. Still, acrophobes (恐高者) will likely want to avoid this dangerous man-made spot. At 90 metres high and 170 metres long, the Trift Bridge is one of the longest and highest pedestrian suspension bridges in the Alps, requiring three cable car rides to reach it.
21. Where can you enjoy the sight of sea?
A. At Half Dome. B. At Cliffs of Moher.
C. At Mount Everest. D. At Trift Bridge.
22. What can we know about Mount Everest?

B. There are cables helping climbers up.
C. It has claimed at least 300 lives so far.
D. About 600 climbers have ever reached its summit.
23. Which of the following can describe all the four places?
A. They are all natural scenic spots.
B. They are all dangerous scenic spots.
C. Tourists must do much rock climbing in each place.

Kristin Schell is the founder of The Turquoise Table, a movement of ordinary people who want to create community right in their own front yards. Ten years ago, she and her family moved to a new home in Austin, Texas.
One day, Kristin tried to connect with her new neighbors by hosting a party. She bought a few picnic tables but the delivery driver set one table down in her front yard by mistake. “After the party, I painted the table turquoise — my favorite color — and put it in the front yard, just a few feet from the sidewalk,” she says.
That turquoise table became the place where Kristin and her kids hung out. They played games, did crafts and ate snacks. “We got intentional about where we spent our time,” Kristin says. “We became ‘front yard people’.”
Neighbors began to stop by to introduce themselves and sit down for a chat. Kristin invited people to join her at the table for coffee or iced tea. Then neighbors asked Kristin if their family could put a picnic table in their front yard too. A movement was born. “It was a simple way to slow down and connect with others,” she says. The turquoise table was inviting and had a shared feel.
People often hesitate to invite others into their homes. They think their house is too messy, it’s not big enough or they don’t have enough time. “Our perfectionism can cause us to miss out on the joy of connecting with others,” Kristin says. Her picnic table takes away the excuses — and the pressure.
She likes how it enables her to take a small step toward easing loneliness and building relationships in her community. “People’s greatest need is to know that they are loved and that they belong,” she says.
A decade after their Texas beginnings, thousands of Turquoise Tables exist in all 50 states and in 13 countries around the world. Not all of them are actually turquoise. “No matter what color it is, it’s a friendship table,” Kristin says.
24. Why did Kristin Schell start the movement?
A. To host more parties in her front yard. B. To entertain her friends and neighbors.
C. To engage with people in the neighbourhood. D. To create harmonious communities worldwide.
25. Which of the following words best describe Kristin Schell according to the text?
A. Creative and sociable. B. Friendly and humorous.
C. Generous and ambitious. D. Cautious and responsible.
26. What can be inferred from the text?
A. People don’t like others to step into their houses.
B. The campaign has a big impact at home and abroad.
C. Kristin Schell bought the turquoise table to host a party.
D. People feel unwilling to join in the front ya rd chat at first.
27. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Love Your Neighbors B. An Amazing Woman
C. Happy Front Yard Time D. Tables Where All Are Welcome

The Malagasy baobab tree (猴面包树), whose thick trunks and tiny branches dot Madagascar’s landscape, should not, by rights (按理说), have survived to the present day. Scientists believe that its large seeds were once spread by the giant tortoises and lemur monkeys that wandered the island. When these species went extinct over one thousand years ago owing to human activity, the baobab tree should have disappeared too. It did not. Seheno Andriantsaralaza at the University of Antananarivo and Onja Razafindratsima at the University of California, now think they may know the reason why.
Together with their colleagues, the scientists monitored 15 tree canopies (树冠) in a western region of Madagascar, to identify any animals that might have claimed the role of baobab-seed spread. The researchers also set up camera traps around seed-containing fruits lying on the ground, and searched any faeces (粪便) that they encountered along the way for the presence of seeds.
They report in the journal Biotropica that a native rodent (啮齿动物) known as the western bunch-tailed rat (束尾鼠) was caught on camera handling whole fruits on four occasions. Although there was no video of the rat breaking the fruits open, the team accidentally found 13 fruits that had been chewed into and had their seeds removed. Though the bite marks were not clear enough to identify an initiator, this was clear evidence that a seed-distributing animal was out there. Later, they found the critical evidence: baobab seeds in seven different piles of bush-pig faeces.
While the finding is important, it also provides valuable evidence that introduced species may not be entirely harmful. Madagascar’s pigs, for example, though not native, have made themselves essential to the survival of truly native species. Similar relationships are suspected to hold in South America between rabbits native to Europe and plants with no seed distributors. For Dr Andriantsaralaza, that suggests the full ecological role of introduced species should be considered before talk of extinction begins.
28. What made scientists think the baobab tree should have disappeared?
A. The increase of its natural enemies. B. The destruction of human activities.
C. The in adaptation of the baobab tree. D. The extinction of its seed spreader.
29. What are camera traps used for?
A. Tracking the footprints of seeds. B. Seeking seed-containing fruits.
C. Recording the animals’ activities. D. Monitoring the baobab tree canopies.
30. Which is most probably the seed-eater according to the report?
A. The giant tortoise. B. The bunch-tailed rat.
C. The bush-pig. D. The European rabbit.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce a new way to protect the baobab tree.
B. To show non-native species are not always harmful.
C. To compare different kinds of seed-distributing methods.
D. To explain the importance of protecting endangered species.

Imagine you are playing in a tennis match, and your performance will determine your team’s success. Your heart races and your skin is damp with sweat — all common signs of anxiety.
However, the human body’s consistent response to anxiety actually masks two different psychological phenomena. The first — “growth anxiety” — occurs in response to challenges that are uncomfortable but manageable. The second — “toxic anxiety” — arises from situations that are beyond one’s ability to cope with. Toxic anxiety can be harmful to both body and mind, while growth anxiety can promote health and resilience, much in the way that exercise can make us fitter.
In general, one’s performance under pressure follows an inverted-U curve (倒“U”曲线). As stress goes up, performance rises to a peak, then drops off. This relationship, called the Yerkes-Dodson Law, was first described in 1908. Since then, dozens of studies have shown that there is an optimum level of stress that can produce the best performance, which is the sweet spot of anxiety.
Growth anxiety can improve resilience in both mind and body. That’s likely because sudden anxiety leads to a short-term increase in two stress hormones (激素): cortisol (皮质醇) and norepinephrine (去甲肾上腺素). Cortisol prompts the body to release glucose (葡萄糖) for energy and boost immune function. Additionally, brief exposure to cortisol can enhance brain’s capabilities in memory and learning. Meanwhile, norepinephrine increases your heart rate and blood pressure, preparing you for fight or flight, and helps you stay focused. Although a racing heart is uncomfortable at the moment, it can be beneficial as long as it doesn’t last too long.
Everyone has a different sensitivity to stress. The same challenge could be terrifying for one person and exciting for another. But regardless of your stress tolerance, even small actions — like getting sufficient sleep and exercise — can help prevent you from sliding down the inverted-U curve. We shouldn’t fear growth anxiety any more than we do the muscle ache from a healthy workout. Both can be uncomfortable but make us stronger in the long run.
32. What’s the similarity between growth anxiety and toxic anxiety?
A. Their effects on physical health.
B. Their influence on mental well-being.
C. The physical signs they produce.
D. The level of challenge they arise from.
33. What does the underline word “sweet spot” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. The initial level. B. The peak level. C. The rising level. D. The ideal level.
34. What do we know about cortisol and norepinephrine?
A. Long-term anxiety strengthens memory with high-level cortisol.
B. Temporary Norepinephrine activates the body and improves concentration.
C. Norepinephrine mainly promote immune activity to handle emergencies.
D. Continuous cortisol production results in unhealthy blood sugar control.
35. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. Growth anxiety should be seen as natural and beneficial.
B. Physical exercise helps individuals manage stress effectively.
C. Discomfort from stress always leads to personal improvement.
D. Growth anxiety benefits individuals with high stress tolerance.

A Journey of Courage
Tom had always dreamed of climbing mountains. As a child, he would spend hours reading adventure books about explorers who scaled the tallest peaks in the world. He admired their bravery and determination, and he promised himself that one day, he would stand on top of a mountain and look out at the world below.
When Tom turned 18, he decided that it was time to make his dream a reality. He spent months training, hiking through forests and climbing smaller hills to build up his strength and stamina (耐力). He read books on mountaineering, learned how to use climbing gear (装备), and practiced tying knots. His goal was to climb Mount Peakstone, a challenging mountain known for its difficult terrain (地形) and unpredictable weather.
On the day of the climb, Tom felt both excited and nervous. He packed his gear carefully—warm clothes, food, water, and his climbing equipment. As he stood at the base of the mountain, he looked up at the towering peak. It seemed much taller in person than it did in the pictures he had seen. For a moment, doubt crept into his mind. Could he really do this?
But Tom pushed the doubt aside. He had come too far to turn back now. With a deep breath, he began his ascent (攀登). The first part of the climb was relatively easy. The weather was clear, and the path was well- marked. As he climbed higher, the air grew colder, and the wind picked up, but Tom pressed on, determined to reach the top.
About halfway up the mountain, the weather took a sudden turn for the worse. Dark clouds gathered overhead, and snow began to fall heavily. The wind howled, making it difficult to see and even harder to keep his balance. Tom’s heart pounded in his chest. He knew he had to make a decision—should he continue climbing, or should he turn back?

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
The World’s Most Striking Tourist Destinations
Adventurers, grab your passports because there’s nothing relaxing about these holiday spots.
Half Dome,Yosemite National Park,USA
The 1500-metre climb to the top of Half Dome is the most difficult of Yosemite Valley’s day hikes, and it’s the last 120 meters that are the most dangerous. While there are ladder-like metal cables (缆绳) to help you reach the summit without rock climbing equipment, falling off them could be deadly.
Cliffs of Moher, Ireland
With breathtaking views of the Aran Islands and Galway Bay, the Cliffs of Moher is one of Ireland’s most popular tourist attractions.
Trift Bridge, Switzerland
A. It has three viewing platforms.
D. Tourists must use climbing equipment in each place.

Kristin Schell is the founder of The Turquoise Table, a movement of ordinary people who want to create community right in their own front yards. Ten years ago, she and her family moved to a new home in Austin, Texas.
One day Kristin tried to connect with her new neighbors by hosting a party.
【答案】24. C 25. A 26. B 27. D

【答案】28. D 29. A 30. C 31. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了科学家研究马达加斯加猴面包树存活原因及新发现。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“Scientists believe that its large seeds were once spread by the giant tortoises and lemur monkeys that wandered the island. When these species went extinct over one thousand years ago owing to human activity, the baobab tree should have disappeared too. (科学家们认为,它的大种子曾经是由在岛上漫步的巨型陆龟和狐猴传播的。一千多年前,由于人类活动,这些物种灭绝了,猴面包树也应该消失了。)”可知,猴面包树种子传播者的灭绝让科学家们认为猴面包树应该已经消失了。故选D。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“The researchers also set up camera traps around seed-containing fruits lying on the ground, and searched any faeces (粪便) that they encountered along the way for the presence of seeds. (研究人员还在地面上含有种子的果实周围设置了相机陷阱,并沿途搜寻粪便以寻找种子的踪迹。)”可知,相机陷阱用于追踪种子的足迹。故选A。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Later, they found the critical evidence: baobab seeds in seven different piles of bush-pig faeces. (后来,他们找到了关键证据:在七堆不同的丛林猪粪便中发现了猴面包树种子。)”可推知,最有可能的食种者是丛林猪。故选C。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是根据最后一段中“While the finding is important, it also provides valuable evidence that introduced species may not be entirely harmful. (虽然这一发现很重要,但它也提供了有价值的证据,表明引入的物种可能并不完全有害。)”可知,文章主要讲述了马达加斯加猴面包树种子传播者的新发现,以及外来物种对本地物种生存的重要作用。可推知,作者写这篇文章的目的是展示非本地物种并不总是有害的。故选B。
D

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Tom found shelter behind a large rock and took a moment to think. He had read about this in the mountaineering books: when the weather turns dangerous, it’s often best to stop and wait it out. Cold and a little frightened, Tom thought of calling for rescue for a moment. But Tom was so close to the top and his dream. He thought, if he had quitted this time, he would feel regretful in his later life. He didn’t want to give up now. After a few minutes, he made up his mind. He would continue, but he would be extra cautious.
Step by step, Tom made his way up the mountain, carefully placing his hands and feet on the rock, testing every hold before moving forward. His muscles ached, and the cold cut through his clothes, but he focused on the goal. After what felt like hours, he finally reached the summit. The wind had died down, and the clouds began to clear, revealing a breathtaking view of the world below. Tom stood there, tired and exhausted, but filled with a sense of accomplishment. As he looked out at the vast landscape, he realized that the journey had taught him more than just how to climb a mountain. It had taught him the importance of perseverance, courage, and believing in himself, even when things seemed impossible. The mountain had tested him, but in the end, he proved to himself that he was capable of achieving his dream.
