In 1899,a wealthy couple built a summer house in Maryland.Over time, the building
had different uses, but today,it is part of a public performing arts campus called Strathmore
complete with a nearby concert hall seating nearly 2,000 people-that has developed around
that first building.
Jazz singer Christie Dashiell first came to Strathmore through its artist-in-residence program.
Each year, this program selects six musicians between 16 and 32 years old and helps them
with lessons,performances,and career advice.
"I left college having so much music,"Dashiell says."I had written so much music and I
had practiced so much music. But I didn't know what an artist was and what life looked like."
At Strathmore,Dashiell learned how to perform on stage, promote her music online, and
plan concerts. And of course, she worked with other musicians to write songs and put on
shows. It's where Dashiell says she began to find not only her vocal talents, but the unique
sonic signature that defines and distinguishes()a jazz artist:her sound.
Dashiell gave several concerts at Strathmore. In 2016,she released her first album()
in its small music room.Later, when she created her second album,Journey in Black, she
performed in a bigger venue at Strathmore.Journey in Black, which came out in late 2023,
tells stories of love, loss, joy and friendship-all of us can relate to that.It combines jazz with
gospel,R&B,and hip-hop.That recording has been nominated (for the Grammy
Award for best jazz vocal album. It is her first Grammy nod.
"It feels good to be recognized in this way,"Dashiell says."Very few artists are making
music with the purpose of being nominated for a Grammy. That's definitely not where I was
coming from when I was making this music.I just wanted to make music that was honest and
true in a way.”

A new study looked at data from more than 10,000 12-and 13-year-olds and their parents,
who were asked about their screen-use habits, including texting, social media, video chatting,
watching videos and surfing the Internet. The researchers also asked if their screen-use caused
problems, like struggling to stop using screens or having trouble with school and daily life.
One key finding stood out:One of the biggest factors of how much time kids spend on
screens-and whether that use is problematic-is how much parents themselves use their
screens when they are around their kids.
"It's really important to role-model screen behaviors for your children,"says Jason
Nagata, lead author of the study."Even if teens don't think they are influenced by their
parents,the data shows they are.
"Instead of beating ourselves up about it,"says Jenny Radesky,a researcher at the
University of Michigan,"it's important for parents to realize that just like kids,we are open
to the draws of technology that is purposely designed to keep us scrolling()."
But even if parents are fighting against bigger forces designed to keep us glued to screens,
that doesn't mean we are completely helpless.Nagata's research also looked for solutions that
worked best to limit screen-use specifically among teenagers because we tend to see kids
spending a lot more time on social media once they hit their teenage years.
Keeping meal times and bedtime screen-free helps kids spend less time on screens.
Nagata's earlier research also found that keeping screens out of bedrooms helps kids sleep
better.Another key point:When parents use screens too much, kids notice that.Teens often
feel their parents are distracted(注意力分散的)and unavailable because they are focused on
their own phones.Given the design of technology,Radesky says the message shouldn't be to
blame(the parents. The message should be to talk with your kids about why you feel so
pulled in by screens.
28.What were the parents and kids asked to do during the study?
A.Record their daily lives.
B.Answer some questions.
C.Send texts to each other.
D.Have a chat with friends.
29.Who does the study show are a bigger influence on kids'screen behaviors?
A.Parents.
B.Teachers.
C.Classmates.
D.Researchers.
30.What does the underlined word "draws"in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Concerns.
B.Principles.
C.Attractions.

About 4,700 years ago,King Djoser,the first ruler of Egypt's Third Dynasty,built a
pyramid in Saqqara,an ancient burial site in Egypt.
No one knows exactly how the pyramid was built. It took millions of massive blocks.
Some of those blocks weighed up to 2,500 kilograms.Experts have proposed several techniques-
including ramps and cranes-to move such heavy stone blocks. They have also thought about
rope-and-pulley devices and wooden rollers.
Researchers now suggest that ancient people used a water-powered system to construct
this pyramid. How?Builders would have controlled flows of water into and out of a large
图
shaft()inside the pyramid. The water's movement would have lifted and lowered a
platform that carried building stones to higher levels.
铷
This idea comes from a study led by Xavier Landreau,a scientist who researches ancient
technology. The team found that a branch of the Nile River once flowed near 31 pyramids,
including Dioser's.It's dried up now.But boats carrying workers and building blocks could
瞰
have traveled this branch of the Nile between 3,700 and 4,700 years ago.Landreau believes
designers of Djoser's pyramid developed techniques for controlling water flow.
←
Landreau's team created a computer model using data from the pyramid, underground
waterways, and satellite images of the region. The model also included a nearby structure
called Gisr el-Mudir,which may have collected rainwater.During heavy rains, this area might
have turned into a lake, sending water into the pyramid's shaft.Inside the shaft,a huge
wooden float()may have been connected to ropes and pulleys. When water filled the
解
shaft, the float would rise, lowering a platform to pick up stones. As the water drained(),
the float would sink, pulling the platform and stones upward.
承
Not all experts agree with this idea.Kamil Kuraszkiewicz,an Egyptologist at the
University of Warsaw in Poland, questions whether the lake Gisr el-Mudir existed,as ancient
records do not mention it."Building the water-powered system,"he says,"would have
第
required much more effort than to move the stone blocks using just manpower.
32.What can we know about building the pyramid?
A.Scientists have reached an agreement on it.
B.Few stone blocks were transported by boat.
C.There's no widely accepted explanation for it.
D.Rope-and-pulley devices were the main method.
33.What does Landreau's study find?
A.Waterpower likely gave a big lift to the pyramid builders.
B.The branches of the Nile River were once badly polluted.
C.The 3D model offers insights into the life in ancient times.
D.Pyramid designers developed techniques for fighting floods.
34.What does the author want to explain in paragraph 5?
A.The exact purpose of Gisr el-Mudir.B.How the water-powered system works.
C.The discovery of an underground river.
D.Why Djoser's pyramid was constructed.

Food gets wasted everywhere.36.But the biggest share of wasted food comes from
households across the country. So we put together a list of recommendations for cutting your
food waste at home.
Buy less. While this isn't particularly groundbreaking,it really is the key to reducing
home waste.37.This is what many of us become guilty (of without even
realizing it.In this case, mark it down every time you throw away something, asking yourself
"Am I buying too much food?"This is the first step in breaking the cycle.
·38·Have you noticed that every time you buy fresh vegetables, they wilt(发蔫)
before you can use them?Storing these things right makes a difference.Use clear storage
containers so you can see what's inside.Marking the contents with dates is also a good way to
keep what you've got at the front of your mind.
Reconsider"best by"dates. We pull a can of soup out of the cupboard only to see that
its "best by"date has long since passed. But these dates are widely misunderstood.39.
There are a small subset of products that can have some kind of increased risk related to them.
Give things a taste.If it seems fine,it probably is.Of course,this doesn't apply to everything.
Try weekly fridge clean-outs.40 These are the items that are most likely to be
thrown away unnecessarily. But you can reduce these occurrences with a specific day to use
them up.Maybe you cook up all the extras into a soup.

It is a kind of scenery that's 56 (unbelievable)amazing. If it were a painting or a
photograph, you'd be sure that a certain degree of creative license had taken place. But it
hasn't.It's all real. This is Sanjiangyuan, the largest in China's new system of national parks.
In the south of Qinghai Province,Sanjiangyuan covers an area about 57 size of
England. The national park is part of a big plan 58 (create)a huge network of parks
across China by2o30,with the primary objective to protect the country's iconic(标志性的),
and in many cases,endangered species.
China is a country 59 has long sought to conserve()the celebrated landscapes
and rich biodiversity, with tens of thousands of protected areas nationwide. Most people
visiting China have probably seen 60 (it)forest parks, scenic areas 61 nature
reserves, but a fragmented (approach has prevented effective conservation of these areas
through the years.
WildChina explorer Kyle Obermann explains that"by uniting hundreds of protected areas
62 (manage)by various provinces, the new system's goal is to make conservation 63 (easy)
and stronger under the central authority of the new National Forestry and Grassland Administration."
This is good news for China's wildlife.The plan,which 64 (begin)in 2015 with ten
pilot parks,will cover 2.3%of China's land area,65 (combine)separate reserves to
provide larger protected habitats for the country's most at-risk creatures.

My garden plants were well on their way to drying up.I stepped from the coolness of the
house into the heat of a summer day in Texas.
"Wow,it's better to make this quick,"I said to myself. As the sun beat down hard,I
generously watered these plants. My dear daughter,Katherine, popped her head out the back door.
"What are you doing out here,Mom?"
I turned, using my shirt to wipe()the sweat from my forehead so I could see her.
"I've got to water everything,or they will die."
“Well,be careful.I'm off to class..”
I continued my work to save my yard, ignoring the spots dancing before my eyes.
Finally,I watered the last plant. With a sense of relief,I reached the back door, expecting
the rush of cool air on my red face.Relief quickly turned to disbelief and shock:Katherine had
locked the back door from the inside out of habit.
My mind quickly processed a slideshow of reality:keys are in the house;my cellphone is
in the house;three hours until my husband,Jonathan, comes home.I'm going to cook!My
backyard was an ovent(烤炉),and I was the picnic ham.
I told myself to calm down and think. There had to be a way.I walked back and forth
around the yard shouting "Help me!"at the top of my voice. No response at all, only the hot,
dead-quiet heat.There was no shade(in the yard.The yard,so inviting in early
morning, was now unbearable in the sun.
Hopeless,I stood in front of the back door, looking at the kitchen through the opening
on the door.Suddenly,I had an idea, and the idea had a name:Alexa-an AI voice service.
Jonathan had told me that I could make hands-free phone calls with Alexa. Now she was
there, just twenty feet away on the kitchen counter.Maybe Alexa could save the day.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
