Best Hikes in Fiordland National Park
Fiordland National Park is a favorite among hikers because of the wildness of the mountain and bay scenery. There are many easy short walks and advanced walks. Check these top walks out for inspiration.
Lake Gunn Nature Walk
It is ideal for kids, wheelchair users, or travelers with other mobility issues, but even expert hikers will enjoy an amble (漫步) along this path. The well-kept path passes through a forest full of birds, coming out at a stony beach beside Lake Gunn. This quick walk is a good alternative if you’re short on time but want to see some beautiful Fiordland views.
Routeburn Track
In winter it’s covered in snow and ice and should only be attempted by highly experienced mountaineers. However, it’s more manageable in summer. Enjoy views of mountains, waterfalls, tarns (山中小湖) and wildflower meadows. Accommodation is in huts and at campsites.
Dusky Track
The trail runs between two lakes, crossing three major valley systems and two mountain ranges. The views over the whole Fiordland landscape are spectacular. It can be very muddy, with tree branches and some river crossings, so be well prepared.
Falls Creek Route
It’s not always a case of longer hikes being most difficult in Fiordland. The Falls Creek Route can be done in a few hours but it is one of the toughest options in Fiordland. The views of Mount Ngatimamoe and Mount Pyramid in winter will be worth it for skilled mountain climbers, though.
21 Which route best suits people with mobility difficulties?
A. Lake Gunn Nature Walk. B. Routeburn Track.
C. Dusky Track. D. Falls Creek Route.
22. What kind of hikers will enjoy Dusky Track?
A. These who like short walks in a jungle.
B Those who are prepared to a very tough hike.
C. Those who dislike hiking through the mud.
D. Those who prefer the scenery of mountains and water.
23. What do Routeburn Track and Falls Creek Route have in common?
A. The mountains are difficult to climb throughout the year.
B. Only advanced climbers are suitable to climb the mountain in winter.
C. Both routes can be done in a short time.
D. The view of waterfalls can be enjoyed in both routes.

What would motivate an 84-year-old retired businessman to become a street performer, playing for spare change and bills dropped in a bucket? It’s just three factors, according to Larry Kingsley: love, loss and purpose.
The “love” part is for Kingsley’s wife of 23 years, Georgeanne Kingsley. Unfortunately, she is also the “loss”. About four years ago, Georgeanne Kingsley was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. “The doctor said, ‘You know, it’s going to be difficult,” Kingsley said. “And I said, ‘I know, but I’m married to her so I’m going to be with her.”
Kingsley decided to pick an unusual way to stay connected with his wife: He dug out his trumpet (小号) and taught himself how to play the instrument again. He’d been in a high school marching band in the 1950s and played the instrument when he was in college, but decades later, he was out of form until he put in some additional time.
Finally, he felt confident enough to play for strangers on the street three times a week — with his wife by his side. Kingsley said his wife didn’t always understand why he was playing, occasionally assuming that he was begging for cash and shouting at him to get a real job.
While Kingsley was collecting donations, it wasn’t for his own use: He was raising money to donate to Alzheimers research and help scientists work to find a cure for the illness afflicting (折磨) his wife. Every dollar, he said, was donated.
However, Georgeanne Kingsley died in August 2022. “The day that she died, I played that night,” Kingsley said. “But in my mind I was just saying ‘The show goes on.’” Since his wife’s death, Kingsley has only been more devoted to making a difference. He started playing six nights a week, and in total has raised more than $15,000. Kingsley said that he would continue playing until the disease was just a memory.
24. Why did Kingsley restart playing the trumpet?
A. To have a new hobby. B. To reconnect with his wife.
C To realize his youthful dream. D. To entertain his sick wife.
25. What does the underlined phrase “out of form” probably mean?
A. Out of control. B. Out of practice. C. Out of work. D. Out of order.
26. What problem did Kingsley encounter in para. 4?
A. His wife couldn’t fully understand him.
B. He earned very little playing for strangers.
C. He had to leave his wife alone at home.
D. His wife’s medical conditions became better.
27. How did Kingsley respond to his wife’s death?
A. He quit performing music temporarily. B. He donated everything to charity.
C. He went into medical research. D. He kept on playing to raise money.

A new study finds younger adults look and feel older on stressful days. “Substantial research tells us stress makes older adults feel their age, or even feel older than they actually are,” says psychology professor Shevaun Neupert, the corresponding author of the new study. “And the literature tells us that when seniors feel older than they actually are, it is associated with many negative health outcomes. However, there is little research examining this issue in younger adults. This work may be particularly timely, as stress researchers are seeing an increase in the amount of stress younger adults are experiencing now.”
The study covered 107 younger adults between the ages of 18 and 36, who completed detailed daily surveys for eight continuous days. The surveys were designed to capture how much stress they were experiencing each day, how much control they felt they had over their lives that day, and how old they felt and looked on that day.
“The key finding was that on days when study participants reported experiencing higher levels of stress than they normally did, they also reported looking and feeling older,” Neupert says. “However, this was only true on days when study participants also reported feeling that they had less control over their lives than they normally did. Besides, both the levels of stress and the levels of control were relative.”
“For one thing, this tells us that the phenomenon of stress making people feel older is not limited to older adults,” Neupert says. “It’s also important because we know that experiencing stress over time can have negative effects and that people generally report increasing levels of stress as they move from young adulthood to midlife. If these young people are already experiencing historically high levels of stress for their age, and that stress is affecting how old they feel, it will be important for us to pay close attention to the markers we use to assess stress-related physical and mental health for this generation.”
28. Why did Neupert carry out the study?
A. To fill a gap in existing research.
B. To correct previous misunderstandings.
C. To improve the living conditions of adults.
D. To help seniors to understand younger adults.
29. What research method was mainly used in the study?
A. Literature review. B. Scientific observations.
C. Survey data analysis. D. Psychological experiments.
30. Which can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A. Adults are especially subject to stress.
B. Stress impacts depend on perceived control.
C. Living an abnormal life makes people look older.
D. Being under others’ control can harm one’s health.
31. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Stress is speeding old people’s aging process
B. Stress levels are rising among younger adults
C. Wiry younger adults pay attention to their ages
D. How younger adults’ perception of stress affects aging
D
One of the most interesting applications of AI in literary analysis is authorship attribution (归属). Traditional methods used by literary scholars to determine authorship often rely on subjective factors such as handwriting analysis or personal knowledge about an author’s life, which can lead to inaccuracies and prejudice.
However, AI algorithms (算法) can analyze large amounts of text data to identify patterns and features unique to each author’s writing style. One example of this is the use of n-grams, which are sequences of words that appear together in a text. By analyzing the frequency and distribution of specific n-grams in a text, AI algorithms can identify an author’s characteristic writing style with a high degree of accuracy.
Stylometric analysis (计量文体学分析) can also be used to detect illegal literary copying or misattributions. By comparing the linguistic patterns and stylistic features of a debatable text with known works by various authors AI algorithms can determine whether the debatable text is more likely to have been written by one author or another, or whether it may be a new discovery altogether.
Stylistic features obtained through AI-generated n-grams and other techniques can be used not only to determine authorship but also for critical purposes. It is possible not only to test theories about the emergence or change of particular styles over time, but also to provide new insights into broader trends in the development of literature. For instance, researchers at the University of Santiago de Compostela used stylometric analysis to prove that two previously unknown 16th-century Spanish novels were actually written by Miguel de Cervantes, the famous author of Don Quixote. It’s a discovery that would have taken years using traditional literary analysis methods.
While some critics argue that AI-led stylometric analysis weakens the human role in literary analysis and interpretation, supporters point out that such analysis expands our understanding of literature by providing objective evidence for subjective opinions.
According to a 2020 report published in Nature Communications, applying AI techniques to literary analysis has led to the identification of previously unknown works by famous authors like William Shakespeare with a success rate of over 75%.
32. What does the “n-grams” technique focus on in research work?
A. The author’s life experience. B. The organization of sentences.
C. The occurrence of certain words. D. The author’s handwriting style.
33. What is a pre-condition for using stylometric analysis?
A. A large collection of debatable works.
B. All the works of contemporary authors.
C. The published works of various authors.
D. The newly-discovered works of the authors.
34. How does the author make a point in Paragraph 4?
A. By offering an example. B. By introducing a theory.
C. By making a comparison. D. By referring to specific data.
35. What’s the last paragraph meant to indicate?
A. The accuracy of AI algorithms.
B. The great progress in AI technology.
C. The status of Shakespeare in literature.
D. The wide employment of AI techniques.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Art has always been a mirror reflecting human culture. From ancient cave paintings to digital works it carries emotions, records history, and challenges perspectives. ____36____ Let’s explore how different art forms shape our world.
____37____ Van Gogh’s swirling stars in The Starry Night, for instance, translate inner disturbance into visible beauty, while Picasso’s Guernica uses twisted shapes to show the pain of war. Meanwhile, modern street art transforms urban spaces into open galleries, proving art isn’t limited to museums.
Performance art demands physical presence from both creators and viewers. ____38____ A dancer’s leap or an actor’s speech creates instant emotional connections with audiences. This live connection makes performance art good for discussing social issues, like plays about fairness between different groups.
Literature, however, lives through imagination. ____39____ When reading Shakespeare’s Hamlet, we don’t see detailed stage designs, yet vivid scenes form in our minds — the dark castle or Hamlet’s troubled face. This mental co-creation between writer and reader is literature’s unique magic.
The educational value of art is increasingly recognized in schools worldwide. Studies show students engaged in arts develop better critical thinking and care more about others’ feelings. Beyond personal growth, public art projects can unite communities. ____40____
Art is not a luxury but a necessity. It questions, heals, and connects — making life deeper than mere existence and turning everyday life into something meaningful.
A. Unlike still visual arts, the form, such as theater, is based on live interaction.
B. Digital art combines traditional techniques with cutting-edge technology.
C. Every culture, regardless of its technological advancement, has artistic expressions.
D. Unlike visual arts, it requires us to actively construct meaning.
E. Music streaming platforms have made classical compositions more accessible.
F. A mural (壁画) painted collectively by neighborhood residents, for example, fosters shared identity and dialogue.
G. Visual arts like painting and sculpture allow us to “see” emotions.

One afternoon after school, Ella and her brother Mark, were eating at a cafe near their home. That afternoon, they had to share their table with another person. That person was a young man in his twenties. After eating, he went to the restroom leaving his iPad on the table. Five minutes later, he came out talking on the cellphone with someone and hurriedly walked out of the cafe without looking back.
Ella saw the iPad on the table. She quickly told Mark, “Mark, the man left behind his iPad.” Mark looked at the iPad. It took his breath away. It was one of the latest models on the market. Mark had always wanted an iPad. But his parents had told him, “You have a cellphone and you need to focus on your study. No need, to have an iPad.” He stared at it for some minutes. Then he said slowly, pausing on every word, “I want to take the iPad.” Ella could not believe her ears. She merely stared at her brother. “You can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it?”
Having made the decision, Mark quickly grabbed the iPad and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Ella’s hand and led her out of the cafe quickly.
Once back home, Mark rushed to his bedroom. Inside his room, he couldn’t wait to take out the piece of beauty from the bag. Oh, he liked it so much. He had his dream iPad for free. Soon, he was polishing it happily. But Ella came in, telling him, “Mark, you cannot keep the iPad. What will you tell Father about this? He will ask you how you got the iPad.” Mark said quickly, “I will say a friend lent it to me.” Ella said, “Now you are lying. Oh dear! When have you turned so dishonest?”
Then Ella noticed a phone number on the back of the iPad. “This may be the man’s phone number. Why don’t we just call this number? He must be worried and sad about losing his iPad. We will talk to him and ask him to come and take it back.” She was trying to talk some sense into him.

A Meaningful Fire Safety Day
To raise students’ safety awareness, some firefighters were invited to our school last Friday, when our Fire Safety Day was held.
The event began with an informative lecture delivered by a fireman, who showed us what to do in case of fire, particularly how to use firefighting equipment. Subsequently, a fire drill was conducted under the firefighters’ guidance. The instant the alarm rang, all of us students practiced evacuating the building safely and we ultimately got together at the playground.
Many students gave positive feedback on this educational and meaningful event, saying they learned practical skills and felt more confident in handling emergencies.
第二节(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】Possible version:
That night, Mark turned over in bed from time to time. He had difficulty sleeping, uncertain about what he should do. Of course, he liked the iPad. However, he was feeling sorry for the owner. When he thought how worried and sad the young man would be at the loss of his iPad, he was full of guilt and shame. After a long and restless night, the next morning, he was determined to return the iPad to the owner. After school, he told Ella, “You’re right. I can’t keep it for my own. I am going to phone the owner.”
Ella was very happy to hear that. Back home, they immediately dialed the number on the back. A young man answered the phone. Mark asked, “Have you lost an iPad? I’m Mark. I found your iPad. Can you come and get it?” “Yes!” the man replied excitedly. Then he expressed his gratitude repeatedly. Ten minutes later, he was at the same cafe to meet Mark and Ella. Handing back the iPad to him and seeing his smile, Mark felt relieved and happy about his final decision. Because he also found back something precious that he had almost lost and realized that honesty was indeed the best policy.
