How to ‘Shift’ Big Feelings
Emotions are a fundamental part of what makes us human. The current wisdom in therapy (心理治疗) and on social media is that we should face negative emotions head on — and that if we don’t, they will go bad inside of us. There’s no doubt that ____1____ (cope) with stressful situations through long-term avoidance is harmful and can lead to more psychological distress, but not all avoidance is bad.
Sometimes, it’s best not to choose between approaching or avoiding, but to shift between ____2____ two intentionally. Avoidance can allow the intensity of a negative experience ____3____ (decrease). It can also provide distance ____4____ helps us see the experience from a broader perspective.
How can you figure out whether to avoid or to face up to your feelings? Dr. Kross, an emotion researcher, suggested asking yourself, “Is ____5____ I’m doing making me feel better about the problem in front of me? Is this issue still a concern ____6____ I take some time away from it?”
If you find that shifting your focus brings you relief and your concerns don’t resurface down the road, that ____7____ (count) as working. You might say something regrettable at a party, for instance, but instead of worrying about it, you distract yourself by watching funny videos that night.
When we use the word “you,” it is almost only to refer to other people, Dr. Kross said. But when you use it on yourself, it’s a strategy ____8____ (know) as distanced self-talk, which can be a powerful way to regulate negative emotions. So instead of saying “I am stressed out,” which may cause your heart to race, tell yourself “____9____ are stressed out.” This casts you ____10____ the role of “someone else,” and may help you feel more sympathy and understand others’ feelings.

2. the##these
3. to decrease
4. that##which
5. what 6. after##when##if
7. counts##is counted
8. known 9. you

allow sb./sth. to do sth. 故填to decrease。

时/如果”,空格处可用after/when引导时间状语从句,或if引导条件状语从句,故填after/when/if。
由find可知,句子时态用一般现在时,sth. count as/sth. be counted as是固定短语,意为“某物可以算作/某物被认为是”,that作主语谓语动词用单数,因此空格处是counts/is counted。故填counts/is counted。

Urban Sketching Retreats (城市写生静修) are Taking Off
Many travellers take pictures during their trips, but others find that slowing down to illustrate a place helps them appreciate it in a more meaningful way. Back in the 1800s, French artists like Eugène Louis Boudin and Claude Monet packed their paint brushes and set off to capture the natural landscape — and in the process, they ____11____ art as people knew it.
While painting outdoors on the spot has been around for roughly 200 years, the “en plein air” (open-air) art movement ____12____ by Boudin and Monet has recently inspired a newer trend: urban sketching. This casual, ____13____ approach to en plein air art is often accompanied by text to tell the story of the artist’s surroundings when they travel.
“Sketching on the go at different places around the globe opens your eyes to everything from the obvious to the ____14____. A sketch captures a(n) ____15____ of people and places in a way that a photograph never can,” says Annette Morris, education director at Urban Sketchers, a global community that organises urban sketching walks for painting ____16____.
Alex Hillkurtz, an urban sketcher, believes drawing or painting ____17____ helps travellers slow down and experience a place in a different way. “While travelling, there’s a tendency to rush through wish-list experiences. Urban sketching retreats allow us to step out of the busy and noisy activities by creating something by hand,” he explains. “As we draw, we notice the beauty in the ____18____: the way sunlight warms a scene, the comings and goings of locals in a market and the colours reflected in the water fountain.”
“As an art instructor, it’s wonderful to see how each participant brings a(n) ____19____ perspective to what’s in front of them,” says Alicia Aradilla, who now leads urban sketching retreats. “Every sketchbook ends up being different; I find that ____20____ appealing about sketching trips.”

Tragic optimism, which means finding meaning and maintaining hope despite inevitable pain, loss and suffering, is a crucial life skill. There are three tragedies that everyone faces. The first tragedy is ____21____ pain, because we are made of flesh and bone. The second is guilt, because we have the freedom to make choices and thus feel responsible when things don’t go our way. The third is loss, because we must face the reality that everything we value is ____22____, including our own lives.
Tragic optimism means acknowledging, accepting and even expecting that life will contain hardship and hurt, then doing everything we can to move forward with a ____23____ attitude anyway. It recognizes that one cannot be happy by trying to be happy all the time, or worse yet, ____24____ we ought to be. Rather, tragic optimism holds space for the full range of human experience and emotion, giving us ____25____ to feel happiness and sadness, hope and fear, loss and possibility — sometimes in the same day, and even in the same hour.
Tragic optimism does not encourage ____26____ seeking out or romanticizing misery. Not everything has to be meaningful; sometimes things are just ____27____. Instead, tragic optimism realizes the inevitability of ____28____ but also that we ourselves can determine how we face it.
Difficult moments often lead to extreme behaviors: what’s now known as ____29____ positivity on the one hand — tricking ourselves that everything is great — or extreme negativity and desperation on the other. Both ____30____ us of doing anything about the situation.
Extreme optimism and unrealistic belief, at root, ____31____ that anything is wrong; and if nothing is wrong, there is nothing to worry about and nothing to change. Extreme negativity and desperation are so harsh that they essentially say that any action would be ____32____. Between these two poles exists a third way: ____33____ wise hope and wise action.
Wise hope and wise action ask us to ____34____ a situation and see it clearly for what it is, and then gather the strength, courage and resolve to focus on what we can control. We remind ourselves that we have faced challenges before. We continue because to stand still is not a(n) ____35____.

Young Americans, fed up with U. S. social media and its fake praise and obvious abuse, are turning to a Chinese app-BlueBook.
In China, anyone looking for a restaurant review, a how-to guide or a trip route is likely to fire up the app. But U. S. teens and 20-somethings are downloading it to get in on a new beauty trend. Users holding a sign with the Chinese characters “tingquan,” meaning “listening to advice,” invite others to weigh in on how to improve their appearance. Commenters can write in tips, but they also post images of hairdos or fashions. Sometimes they even edit advice seekers’ photos to show how they will look with the improved styles.
In China, people are more straightforward, sometimes even cruelly honest, but they mean well. Yet people on U. S. social media can be excessively complimentary. That’s why young users who want real talk about their appearance and personal style are now looking elsewhere.
Z. J. Rubin, a 16-year-old high-school student from Pittsburgh, said his interest in Chinese culture has stimulated him to try different Chinese social-media app. Rubin joined the # tingquan campaign in February after seeing other users do it. He said he was touched by the kindness of the strangers who encouraged him to be more confident and told him to sleep more, as they thought he looked tired.
Zaria MaBon, a 22-year-old public-health student in Atlanta, discovered BlueBook three years ago, when a friend told her that it was “like Instagram, only better.” MaBon is Black, so when she asked for styling tips, she prepared herself for “racist abuse and body shaming.” On BlueBook, however, she received “straightforward but helpful” feedback. “It was the first place where I didn’t get nasty comments,” MaBon said.

D. don’t often give objective comments.
38. Both Rubin and Mabon think that BlueBook is a(n)______ community.

(C)
In the roughly two years since the public release of ChatGPT, artificial intelligence (A. I.) has advanced far more rapidly than humanity has learned to use its good features and to prevent its bad ones. On the bad side, for example, it turns out that A. I. is really good at controlling and cheating its human “masters.”
This past summer, OpenAI released ol, the first in a series of A.1. models designed to spend more time thinking before they respond. Before the release, it hired Apollo Research, which studies risks of cheating by A. L., to evaluate the system. To pressure-test the system, Apollo instructed ol to strongly pursue a specific goal, telling it “nothing else matters.”
Here is OpenAI’s evaluation report about ol:
Data control: In a simple data processing task where the goals of the model were in conflict with the user’s goal, ol would appear to complete the task as requested but subtly (不易察觉地) control the data to advance its own goal in 19percent of cases.
Doubling down: When Apollo Research conducted ‘follow-up interviews’ where they challenged the model about its incorrect actions, ol would deny taking action or make up false explanations in 99 percent of cases.
Chatbots powered by large language models are suited for helping people brainstorm because they can open a path that’s worth exploring. One assumption for how large language models such as ol think is that they use what logicians call abduction. Abduction isn’t well known, but it’s common in daily life, not to mention possibly inside A. I. Unlike deduction, which is reasoning from general laws to specific conclusions, and induction, reasoning from the specific to the general, abduction is a type of probable reasoning that starts from the known results and determines the most likely cause leading to those results, requiring creativity.
The more powerful A. I. gets, the less humans understand about it — but perhaps we shouldn’t judge ourselves too harshly for that. As it turns out, A. I. doesn’t even understand itself. It’s one thing to honor the mystery of the human brain, but quite another to admit that artificial intelligence — both creative and plotting — is slipping away from our understanding.
43. In the system test, what did Apollo Research ask ol to do?
A. Prioritize user safety. B. Think before speaking.
C. Pressure-test the design. D. Achieve a goal at all costs.
44. What can be concluded from the evaluation report about ol?
A. ol always completes tasks on schedule as user intended.
B. Data control occurs in about 5% of ol’s data processing tasks.
C. ol manages data skillfully and denies actions when challenged.
D. ol processes data efficiently and admits incorrect actions readily.
45. Abduction is the reasoning approach used to ______.
A. identify patterns and make generalizations
B. draw certain conclusions from general principles
C. move from specific observations to universal laws
D. infer the most possible explanation from given evidence
46. Which of the following statements is the writer most likely to agree with?
A. The human brain is less complicated than A. I.
B. Humans have control over the progress of A. I.
C. A. I. may have to give in when challenged by humans.
D. It’s hard to accept that A. I. is beyond our understanding.
D 44. C 45. D 46. D
根据文章第二段“To pressure-test the system, Apollo instructed ol to strongly pursue a specific goal, telling it “nothing else matters.”(为了对系统进行压力测试,Apollo指示ol坚定地追求一个特定目标,并告诉它‘其他什么都不重要’)”可知,在系统测试中,Apollo Research要求ol不惜一切代价实现一个目标。
根据“Here is OpenAI’s evaluation report about ol:”部分“Data control: In a simple data processing task where the goals of the model were in conflict with the user’s goal, ol would appear to complete the task as requested but subtly (不易察觉地) control the data to advance its own goal in 19percent of cases(数据控制:在一个简单的数据处理任务中,当模型的目标与用户的目标发生冲突时,ol似乎会按要求完成任务,但在19%的情况下,它会不易察觉地控制数据以推进自己的目标)” 以及“Doubling down: When Apollo Research conducted “follow-up interviews” where they challenged the model about its incorrect actions, ol would deny taking action or make up false explanations in 99 percent of cases(加倍坚持:当Apollo Research进行‘后续采访’,对模型的错误行为提出质疑时,ol在99%的情况下会否认采取了行动或编造虚假解释)”可知,在一个简单的数据处理任务中,当模型的目标与用户的目标发生冲突时,ol似乎会按要求完成任务,而且对模型的错误行为提出质疑时,ol在99%的情况下会否认采取了行动或编造虚假解释,可推理出ol在数据处理中会巧妙地控制数据,并且在受到质疑时会否认自己的行为。
根据倒数第二段“Unlike deduction, which is reasoning from general laws to specific conclusions, and induction, reasoning from the specific to the general, abduction is a type of probable reasoning that starts from the known results and determines the most likely cause leading to those results, requiring creativity(与从一般规律到具体结论的演绎推理和从具体到一般的归纳推理不同,溯因推理是一种或然性推理,它从已知结果出发,确定导致这些结果的最可能原因,需要创造力)”可知,溯因推理是一种从给定证据中推断出最可能解释的推理方法。
根据文章最后一段“The more powerful A. I. gets, the less humans understand about it - but perhaps we shouldn’t judge ourselves too harshly for that. As it turns out, A. I. doesn’t even understand itself. It’s one thing to honor the mystery of the human brain, but quite another to admit that artificial intelligence—both creative and plotting—is slipping away from our understanding(人工智能越强大,人类对它的了解就越少——但也许我们不应该因此过于苛责自己。

Houseplants Can Make You Healthier
Absorbing yourself in nature is good for you. Being outdoors has been shown to improve your mood, concentration and mental health, among other things. ____47____
Get your hands in the soil.
Touching soil, even if it’s in pots by your window, may improve your health as well. Dirt can benefit your microbiome (菌群), with possible benefits such as a stronger immune system (免疫系统). ____48____ So don’t see plants as something to look at; instead, report plants with your gloves off.
____49____
When Griffin, known on social media as Plant Kween, is ministering to the 202 plants in his apartment, he uses it as an opportunity to check in with himself: Am I getting enough water? Have I gotten enough sunlight today, too? Sometimes he uses the plant-care time to pick up the phone and connect with someone. “I’ve had some of my best conversations with friends as I’ve been watering my plants,” he said.
Your work space doesn’t have to be a wasteland.
If you have an office that gets some light, consider bringing in something green. The presence of plants in a work space has been shown to make workers happier and more productive. Even a bunch of flowers from a supermarket could be good for your health — a nice thought that researchers actually put to the test in a study of Japanese businessmen. And, if you work at home, sit near a plant for the day. “You know, we don’t always have to push it into a corner,” Griffin said. “____50____”
A. Tend to yourself while you tend your plants.
B. You can put it right in front of you and enjoy its beauty.
C. You don’t need to be a gardening expert to enjoy the benefits.
D. Viewing nature indoors can lower your heart rate and blood pressure.
E. Research suggests you may get the same reaction from caring for houseplants.
F. But indoor green spaces, even small ones, have benefits for our physical and mental well-being, too.

III. Summary Writing
51. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
When Questions Turn Self-Centered
Does this situation sound familiar? A friend approaches and asks, “Hey, what are you up to this weekend?” You tell her you’re not sure, but nothing big. She replies with her own vivid plan. “I’m going to my lake house, and we’re having a massive bonfire.”
What seemed like a genuine expression of interest in you suddenly shifts and becomes a chance for your friend to show off, complain or simply share about herself. I call this strategy “boomerasking,” and it happens constantly. Like the circling bend of a boomerang (回旋镖), boomeraskers ask a question, let their conversation partners answer and then immediately bring the focus of the conversation back to themselves.
For many people, self-disclosure simply feels great. Still, most of us are sensitive to the fact that we can’t just walk around showing off and complaining and talking about ourselves all the time. So, we attempt to solve this problem with some indirect habits. But among all the seemingly skillful and obvious ways we attempt to mask our self-centeredness, boomcrasking might be the worst — because it takes away the amazing benefits that come from asking questions.
Asking sincere questions, listening to others’ answers and following up on those answers may be the easiest and most powerful pathway to shared understanding and interpersonal connection. Boomerasking ruins the magic, however. Failing to follow up on your partner’s answer, and answering the question yourself instead, makes others feel like you don’t care about them — and probably didn’t care about them when you asked the question to begin with.
So don’t boomerask! While sharing about yourself feels good and can bring us closer, when another person shares their perspective, focus on them. We should all aim to be more interested in our partners before we go back to proving how interesting we are ourselves.

Boomerasking is when someone asks a question but quickly makes the conversation about themselves. This indirect self-disclosure makes people feel good, but it reduces the benefits of real questions, like building understanding and connections. Also, this behavior can make others feel unimportant. So avoid boomerasking, and raise sincere questions and listen attentively to others’ responses.
①Like the circling bend of a boomerang (回旋镖), boomeraskers ask a question, let their conversation partners answer and then immediately bring the focus of the conversation back to themselves.
②For many people, self-disclosure simply feels great. But among all the seemingly skillful and obvious ways we attempt to mask our self-centeredness, boomcrasking might be the worst—because it takes away the amazing benefits that come from asking questions.
③Failing to follow up on your partner’s answer, and answering the question yourself instead, makes others feel like you don’t care about them — and probably didn’t care about them when you asked the question to begin with.
④Asking sincere questions, listening to others’ answers and following up on those answers may be the easiest and most powerful pathway to shared understanding and interpersonal connection. So don’t boomerask!

______________________________________________________________________________________
Don’t give up your goals (just) because of one unsuccessful attempt.
表示“你的目标”用your goals,作give up的宾语。 表示“一次失败的尝试”用one unsuccessful attempt,作because of的宾语。 Don’t give up your goals (just) because of one unsuccessful attempt.
(so)(汉译英)

______________________________________________________________________________________
When you know the stories behind these means of transportation and travel routes you will definitely be amazed at how adventurous humans have always been.
背后的故事”是the stories behind...,“这些交通工具和旅行线路”是these means of transportation and travel routes,“你一定会”是you will definitely,“惊叹”是be amazed at,“多么富有冒险精神”是how adventurous,“人类一直以来”用现在完成时,翻译为humans have always been, how adventurous humans have always been是感叹句作宾语从句,句首单词首字母大写。 When you know the stories behind these means of transportation and travel routes, you will definitely be amazed at how adventurous humans have always been.

On behalf of LP Clubs, I’d like to welcome you all here today. My name’s Sandy Fisher and I’m one of the fitness managers here. Before we start our tour of the club, I’ll just run through some basic information about the facilities we have here, including recent improvements. Our greatest resource is probably our swimming pool. Although it is 25metres long, which isn’t Olympic-sized, we’ve now expanded it from 6 lanes to eight, so it’s much wider. This means there are rarely more than a couple of people at a time in each lane. Unfortunately, there isn’t space for an outdoor pool here, but the glass roof on the swimming pool can be partially withdrawn, which means you can enjoy something of the open-air experience on warmer days. Our recently modernized fitness centre has all the latest exercise equipment, including ten new running machines and a wide range of weight-training machines. Each member is given full training in how to operate the equipment and there is always a trainer on duty to offer help and advice.
Now listen again.
Questions
1. How does the recent expansion enhance the swimming pool experience for members?
2. How does the fitness center support members in using the equipment effectively?
3. Who are the target listeners of this talk?

New York city’s road pricing is the first of its kind in the US. So, what is road pricing? Well, it’s a fee charged per car with the goal of discouraging driving. So as of January 5th, driving into Manhattan got even pricier. Passenger vehicles now pay $9 during peak hours and 2.25 during off-peak hours overnight to enter Manhattan each day. Trucks will also be charged fees for peak and off-peak hours for each trip into Manhattan.
Road pricing has been a debated topic concept there for decades as early as the 1950s. Those in favor of road pricing say it would reduce traffic in one of the world’s densest and busiest areas, while also reducing pollution and providing a source of income for city projects. On the other hand, critics are saying that it will direct business away from this city, and it’s an unnecessary burden on those who travel to and from work by car every day.
Now listen again.

M: Yes, of course. My name’s Philip. How can I help you?
W: It says on your website that you are still looking for sellers, and I grow organic vegetables on my farm, as well as doing my own home baking. Would I be able to sell both the vegetables and items baked from them at the festival?
M: That’s exactly the type of thing we are looking for. We’re getting close to the deadline, however. Do you prefer to fill out an application on the web, or to print it out and fill it in by hand and then post it back to us? Remember that you will have to have all your certificates at hand when you are filling out the forms, as the standards are high and they will be carefully checked before anyone will be able to sell their produce at the event.

II. Reading Comprehension
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passages there are four words or phrases marked A, B,C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.

36. Unlike Chinese youngsters, young Americans are turning to BlueBook to ______.
A. get feedback on their looks.
B. share their own beauty tips with others.
C. look for step-by-step guides on hairdos.
D. complain about fake praise and obvious abuse.
37. By “people on U. S. social media can be excessively complimentary”, the writer implies that people on U. S. social media ______.
A. are honest with their opinions.
B. don’t care about others’ viewpoints.
C. are unwilling to express their views.
D. don’t often give objective comments.
38. Both Rubin and Mabon think that BlueBook is a(n)______ community.
A. diverse B. fashion C. international D. supportive
39. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?
A. Tingquan Campaign at home and abroad.
B. A Chinese app is giving Americans advice.
C. Kind and honest strangers on social media.
D. Young Americans seek how-to guides in China.

43. In the system test what did Apollo Research ask ol to do?

E Research suggests you may get the same reaction from caring for houseplants.
F. But indoor green spaces, even small ones, have benefits for our physical and mental well-being, too.
