In the mid-1990s, Tom Bissell taught English as a volunteer in Uzbekistan. He left after seven months, physically broken and having lost his mind. A few years later, still attracted to the country, he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article about the disappearance of the Aral Sea.
His visit, however, ended up involving a lot more than that. Hence this book, Chasing the Sea: Lost Among the Ghosts of Empire in Central Asia, which talks about a road trip from Tashkent to Karakalpakstan, where millions of lives have been destroyed by the slow drying up of the sea. It is the story of an American travelling to a strange land, and of the people he meets on his way: Rustam, his translator, a lovely 24-year-old who picked up his colorful English in California, Oleg and Natasha, his hosts in Tashkent, and a string of foreign aid workers.
This is a quick look at life in Uzbekistan, made of friendliness and warmth, but also its darker side of society. In Samarkand, Mr Bissell admires the architectural wonders, while on his way to Bukhara he gets a taste of police methods when suspected of drug dealing. In Ferghana, he attends a mountain funeral(葬礼)followed by a strange drinking party. And in Karakalpakstan, he is saddened by the dust storms, diseases and fishing boats stuck miles from the sea.
Mr Bissell skillfully organizes historical insights and cultural references, making his tale a well-rounded picture of Uzbekistan, seen from Western eyes. His judgment and references are decidedly American, as well as his delicate stomach. As the author explains, this is neither a travel nor a history book, or even a piece of reportage. Whatever it is, the result is a fine and vivid description of the purest of Central Asian traditions.
24. What made Mr Bissell return to Uzbekistan?
A. His friends' invitation. B. His interest in the country.
C. His love for teaching. D. His desire to regain health.
25. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Developing a serious mental disease.
B. Taking a guided tour in Central Asia.
C. Working as a volunteer in Uzbekistan.
D. Writing an article about the Aral Sea.
26. Which of the following best describes Mr Bissell's road trip in Uzbekistan?
A. Romantic. B. Eventful. C. Pleasant. D. Dangerous.
27. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To introduce a book. B. To explain a cultural phenomenon.
C. To remember a writer. D. To recommend a travel destination.
B 25. D 26. B 27. A
A few years later, still attracted to the country. he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article about the disappearance of the Ara Sea”可知,几年后,Bissell仍然被这个国家所吸引。
A few years later, still attracted to the country, he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article about the disappearance of the Aral Sea(几年后,仍然被这个国家所吸引。
And in Karakalpakstan, he is saddened by the dust storms, diseases and fishing boats stuck miles from the sea.”
故选A。
C
Chinese painting, or Guohua, is a centuries-old art form that weaves together ink, brushstrokes (笔触), and deep philosophical insights. Rooted in ancient traditions, it focuses on “Xie Yi” and “Yi Jing”. Its goal is to capture the essence of a subject rather than its physical appearance, inviting viewers to engage with the artist’s inner world.
The tools of Chinese painting are as symbolic as the art itself. Xuan paper, known for its absorbency, and ink sticks rubbed on ink stones produce varying tones of black. Brushes, crafted from animal hair, allow artists to create strokes ranging from bold and forceful to whisper-thin. These materials, alongside mineral pigments (颜料) like lapis lazuli (for blue) and cinnabar (for red), form the “Four Treasures of the Study”, reflecting the harmony between nature and human creativity.
Styles in Chinese painting are divided into two main types: Gongbi and Xieyi. Gongbi, or detailed painting, requires great care, using fine lines and bright colors to show royal scenes or birds and flowers. Xieyi, or freehand painting, focuses on natural expression and emotion, often seen in landscapes that use ink washes to create misty mountains or flowing rivers.
Subjects in Chinese painting mirror cultural values. Landscapes dominate, symbolizing humanity’s connection to nature and Taoist principles of harmony. Bird-and-flower paintings use symbols like plum blossoms and bamboo to convey moral virtues. Figure painting, from Tang Dynasty court portraits to Zhang Zeduan’s Along the River During the Qingming Festival, captures historical narratives and daily life.
In the 20th century, artists like Qi Baishi changed traditional styles by mixing ink painting with Western ideas. He painted shrimp with smooth, lively brushstrokes that make them look alive. Wu Guanzhong tried new ways to paint landscapes with ink, while today’s artists even mix Chinese calligraphy with computer art. However, Chinese painting still acts as a bridge connecting old and new — like a poetic picture that shows the heart of Chinese culture in every brushstroke.
28. What is the main function of Xuan paper in Chinese painting according to the passage?
A. It is the only symbol of Chinese painting.
B. It is used to store ink sticks and ink stones.
C. It helps to create bold and forceful brush marks.
D. Its water-absorbing ability enables the creation of different black shades.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been making remarkable progress in the medical field in recent years. AI is being applied in various aspects of healthcare, bringing about revolutionary (革命性的) changes.
In the area of disease diagnosis (诊断), AI-powered systems are showing great potential. These systems can analyze vast amounts of patient data, including medical images such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs. For example, some AI algorithms (算法) can detect early signs of cancer in medical images with a high level of accuracy. They can spot tiny tumors or abnormal cell patterns that might be overlooked by human doctors. This is because AI can process and learn from a huge number of previous cases, constantly improving its diagnostic capabilities.
When it comes to drug development, AI also plays a crucial role. It can speed up the process of finding new drugs. AI algorithms can analyze the chemical structures of various substances and predict how they will interact with the human body. This helps pharmaceutical (制药的) companies to screen potential drug candidates more efficiently. Instead of spending years on trial-and-error in the laboratory, they can use AI to narrow down the options and focus on the most promising ones.
Medical robots are another area where AI is making an impact. Robots can assist surgeons during operations. These intelligent robots can be more precise than human hands in some cases. They can follow pre-programmed instructions accurately, reducing the risk of human error during complex surgical procedures. Also, some robots are designed to provide care for patients, such as helping them move around or reminding them to take medications.
In conclusion, the application of AI in the medical field is opening up new possibilities for improving healthcare quality, saving lives, and advancing medical research.
32. What is one key advantage of AI-powered systems in disease diagnosis?
A. They only focus on treating minor illnesses.
B. They can completely replace human doctors.
C. They process and analyze large amounts of medical data.
D. They do not require any training with past cases.
33. How does AI contribute to drug development?
A. By directly producing new drugs in seconds.
B. By reducing the cost of laboratory equipment.
C. By slowing down the process of finding new drugs.
D. By predicting interactions between chemicals and the human body.
34. Which of the following statements is true according to paragraph 4?
A. Medical robots can only assist surgeons during operations.

根据上文“Homeless animals are usually left without a permanent home when their owners give them up or they're found on the street. With millions of animals living in shelters every year, there aren't enough people to take them in. (当主人放弃它们或者它们被发现在街上时,无家可归的动物通常没有一个永久的家。每年有数以百万计的动物生活在收容所里,却没有足够的人收养它们)”可知,很多无家可归的动物因为没人收养而生活在收容所里,这就导致很多动物得不到它们需要的关爱。与D项“So, many animals don't get the love and care that they need (所以,很多动物得不到它们需要的爱和关怀)”表达的含义一致,故选D项。
根据上文“When you adopt an animal from a shelter or rescue group, you save two lives.(当你从动物收容所或救援组织领养一只动物时,你拯救了两条生命)”以及下文“but also you've made room at the shelter for another homeless cat or dog. (而且你还为收容所里的另一只无家可归的猫或狗腾出了空间)”可知,上文说的是当你从动物收容所或救援组织领养一只动物时,你拯救了两条生命,下文说的是你还为收容所里的另一只无家可归的猫或狗腾出了空间,可推理出空白处说的是有关你从动物收容所或救援组织领养动物给你带来的感受,而且此处运用了“not only...but also...”结构,与E项“Not only can you feel good about saving the pet you adopted (你不仅会因为拯救了你收养的宠物而感觉良好)”构成“not only...but also...”

根据下文“Shelters and rescue groups rely on foster(收养的)families to take in dogs and cats on a short-term basis. (收容所和救援组织依靠寄养家庭短期收留猫和狗)”可知,此处提到了寄养家庭收留动物,与C项“Fostering is a fun way to get lots of helpful hands-on time (寄养是一种有趣的方式,可以获得很多有用的实际操作时间)”中“Fostering”相呼应,且C项进一步说明了寄养的好处,符合语境,故选C项。
【40题详解】
根据本段标题“Donate to the animals (为动物捐款)”以及下文“Consider paying it forward by sponsoring(发起)a pet's adoption or donating food, cleaning supplies, blankets or towels to your local rescue. You can also help animals right from your computer or phone by donating items from the Best Friends Amazon wish list.

Catherine had stayed at home all her life to look after her three children, but now, she, who lost her husband in a car accident, had to step out and earn money to make ends meet. With zero work experience and no professional degree, her chances of getting hired for a well-paid job were next to zero.
One day, after dropping her children at school, Catherine spotted a construction site (工地). “I think I can work here,” she thought and walked close to the manager.
“Hi, are you hiring (雇佣)? ” she asked. “Yes, we are,” the manager looked at Catherine from head to toe.“Are you sure you can work here? This job requires a lot of hard work.” “I’m ready for it,” she told the manager and signed a contract (合同) to work a 12-hour shift (轮班). However, Catherine kept her new job a secret from her children. She thought they would feel embarrassed after learning their mother worked at a construction site.
Every morning, after dropping her children to school, she would go to the construction site and work until her shift ended. She would pick up heavy bricks (砖块) on her shoulder to transport them from one part of the site to the other. One evening, Catherine’s son, Peter, told her about an upcoming competition in school that required mothers to join. In the competition, students would wear blindfolds (眼罩) and have to recognize their mothers without looking at them. “That sounds like such a cool event, Peter!” Catherine said excitedly. “I can’t wait for it!” “I won’t go there with you, mom,” Peter replied. “But why?” What her son said next was something Catherine wasn’t prepared to hear.
“Mom, I would have to touch your hands to recognize you, and everyone would look at them,” Peter explained. “Your hands are so ugly. They’re so hard and rough,” he added. “I will feel so embarrassed when my classmates look at your hands,” the boy said. “I won’t attend the event.” Catherine felt terrible but couldn’t say anything in her defense.

A few weeks later, Peter was walking home when something unexpected caught his attention. In the distance, he saw a familiar figure in worn-out clothes, covered in dust and sweat, lifted heavy bricks with her weathered hands at the construction site. As he drew closer, he realized it was his mother, Catherine. Catherine tirelessly moved heavy bricks with her ugly and rough hands under the scorching sun. Her face was covered in sweat, and she didn't even have time to wipe it off as she rushed back and forth, working tirelessly. Peter stood there in shock, unable to utter a single word. Meanwhile, a wave of guilt and regret flooded over him. He shouldn’t have said those hurtful words.
On his way back home, he kept thinking about how he would apologize to his mother. Peter couldn't shake off the guilt and regret for his hurtful words towards his mother. He knew he had to make things right and apologize to her. The moment Catherine stepped into the house from work, Peter rushed up to her, gently took her hands in his and held them tightly. “Mom, I’m sorry” he murmured, tears welling up in his eyes, “I didn’t understand then, but now I see how hard you work for us. Your hands may be rough, but they are the most beautiful hands in the world because they care for us.” Tears welled up in Catherine’s eyes as she embraced her son, a wave of happiness washing over her. From that day on, Peter not only attended the school event with his mother but also stood by her side, holding her hands with pride.

29. What distinguishes Xieyi painting from Gongbi?
A. Focus on details painting.
B. Emphasis on emotional expression.
C. Inclusion of historical figures.
D. Use of fine lines and bright colors.
30. Why does the author mention Qi Baishi and Wu Guanzhong?
A. To compare them with ancient painters.
B. To explain the decline of ink painting.
C. To show how traditions develop.
D. To criticize modern art trends.
31. What is the central theme of the passage?
A. Exploring Chinese painting’s cultural and philosophical roots.
B. Comparing artistic tools in Chinese and Western painting.
C. Debating the significance of ink versus color.
D. Introducing famous masters of Chinese painting.

C They process and analyze large amounts of medical data.
B. Medical robots are mainly designed to help patients move around.
C. Medical robots can help reduce the occurrence of errors in complex surgical procedures.
D. Medical robots are always more precise than human hands in all surgical procedures.
35. Which title best summarizes the passage?
A. The Role of AI in Drug Development
B. The Applications of AI in Healthcare
C. The Limitations of AI in Modern Medicine
D. The Comparison of Medical Robots and Human Surgeons
