This is families and the thing they all share: their love for their loved ones.
UPSIDE DOWN AND BACKWARDS
This short book has six stories that show different plots (情节) like strange neighbors and mystical science projects. It turns ordinary situations into unusual adventures that any child will love to read. All stories celebrate strong relationships with people, whether they are friends, family, or teachers. The stories have some pictures which help kids form a mental picture of the story.
MAXIMILIAN & THE MYSTERY OF THE GUARDIAN ANGEL
This book follows an 11-year-old wrestling (摔跤) lover who one day discovers his connection to a famous wrestler called the Guardian Angel. It does have pictures, but they don’t contribute much to the story. The book is full of action, and it tells a story children can enjoy from beginning to end.

On a sunny morning in 2001, Jim, a skilled diver and ocean lover, was diving as usual around Palm Beach in the Bahamas when he spotted a giant tiger shark circling a few feet away. The shark, which he later named Emma, was clearly struggling in pain. Seeing Jim, Emma swam close to him seemingly quite on purpose. With great fear and curiosity, Jim checked and found a fishing hook in Emma’s mouth. Despite the obvious risks, he managed to pull the hook out, careful not to cause any further injury to the animal. Jim has since removed four other hooks from Emma’s mouth on several occasions and sometimes freed her from fishing lines or plastic bags. The two have become inseparable.
Every time Jim goes into the water in the area of Palm Beach, Emma comes around and rubs her head against him as a sign of affection (喜爱). It’s not the kind of behavior most people would expect from tiger sharks, which could easily tear a person apart. “When you suddenly come across a huge shark, it seems like it might end your life,” Jim said. “What makes Emma so special is that she’s so loving and affectionate. She’s not a mindless killer but a sentient (有感情的) animal just like cats and dogs.”
Emma will always recognize Jim every time he dives in her area even if he changes diving equipment. Over time, she has learned his hand signals — an invitation to get her head rubbed and Jim claims that she started acting like a playful dog who loves being petted.
“What makes Emma so special is that she’s so loving and affectionate. She’s not a mindless killer but a sentient (有感情的) animal just like cats and dogs.” Jim said. “To have a connection that lasts the entire time you`re in the water is so moving and so influential. The first time I realized that I had a love for sports competitions was during the Field Day in elementary school. Small for my age, and more of a bookworm than a sports lover, I had suffered that special humiliation of being picked last for various gym teams. The Field Day, which focused on individual skills, was different. In the Softball Throw event, I got my first taste of sporting victory. Credit goes to the example of my first coach, my father. He lifted weights every morning at home. He bought us all baseball gloves and hats, and in the warm months, we spent hours playing catch.
Once I got to sixth grade and switched to private school our entire student body was assigned to either the Red or the White team. Throughout the year, we competed against each other in various games and exercises for points. I eventually became president of The Committee of Games. I also played on the field hockey team and the basketball team. And at home, playing tennis, skating, skiing and biking were simply normal things we did. During the break time, magazines were also quite popular for us teens. These regularly featured articles on physical exercise. Somehow, my college roommate and I took up the habit of completing Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) exercises every day, a practice that continued into my marriage, when we had no spare money to use to join a gym.
So, though it shocks some of our friends, that early foundation continued in adulthood into a sports and fitness focus, considered important even on vacation. I still love reading and the arts, too. As far as I’m concerned, life is the richest with my feet in both worlds.
8. What does the underlined word “humiliation” mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Pride. B. Threat. C. Shame. D. Glory.
9. According to the author, what contributes to her victory in the Softball Throw event?
A. Her confidence in her sports skills. B. The efforts she put into exercising.
C. Her advanced sports gloves and hats. D. The strong influence of her father.
10. What happened after the author stepped into adulthood?
A. She changed the focus into reading. B. She stuck to working out.
C. She regularly exercised on weekends. D. She joined Royal Canadian Air Force.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To express her love for sports. B. To show her father’s guidance on sports.
C. To stress the advantages of physical exercise. D. To share her childhood memories about sports.
D
In valleys with thick plants, different-sized round and square buildings with faded yellow clay walls and wooden roofs, tulou lie in mountainous villages in Longyan, Fujian Province. There are more than 23,000 tulou in Yongding, which became well-known after 46 were given World Heritage status by UNESCO in 2008. “The structures were awarded because they are exceptional examples of a building of tradition and function demonstrating a particular type of communal (共有的) living and defensive organization, and, in terms of their harmonious relationship with their environment, an outstanding example of human settlement,” UNESCO said.
The giant multi-storied tulou were built with wood and mud walls. Constructed from the 15th to 20th centuries, these massive communal homes were sited based on feng shui principles, which claim to use energy forces to harmonize individuals with their environment. Tulou are also purposefully resting amid tea, tobacco, rice plantations and abundant forests of pine and bamboo.
Throughout history, tulou residents have mostly been Hakka — migrants in southern China. Population pressures created conflict between the Hakka and their neighbors, so they built their homes to double as defending. The buildings are mainly four or five stories high. The first floor serves as the kitchen, the second is used for grain storage and the upper floors act as living areas. The structures are mainly symmetrical (对称), and their defensive features include ironclad gates, escape tunnels, narrow openings for weapons under the dark-tiled roofs, and a water well. For their defensive function, only rooms on the third floor and higher have windows, which are very small. With sufficient food, the residents could survive in the event of a lengthy conflict.
Communal living is integrity to these villages, where the closed wall design boosts social interaction. Residents gather in the courtyard for ceremonies such as ancestor worship and weddings. Tulou is such an extraordinary piece of architecture, living up to the title given by UNESCO.
12. What do we know about tulou?
A. Over 23,000 tulou were given World Heritage status.
B. Among 23,000 tulou, only 46 became famous globally.
C. Tulou is the most outstanding Chinese human settlement.
D. They’re exceptional buildings of tradition and function.
13. What is most important for residents during a long period of conflict?
A. Enough food. B. Escape tunnels.
C. Small windows. D. Defensive weapons.
14. What is probably the author’s attitude to the protection of tulou?
A. Unconcerned. B. Favorable. C. Negative. D. Unclear.
15. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. Tulou: Given the World Heritage Status by UNESCO in 2008
B. Tulou: a Special Chinese Structure Combining Living and Defending
C. Tulou: Different-Sized Round and Square Buildings
D. Tulou: in Harmony with Their Environments

One afternoon, Jake was wandering (徘徊) the halls, trying to find the library. He noticed Ms. Brock in the office grading papers with full attention. It seemed that Ms. Brock had forgotten the world around her. Keeping up his courage, Jake came to her.
“Um, excuse me, Ms. Brock?” Jake’s voice was shaking slightly.
Ms. Brock looked up, her eyes filled with warmth.“ Yes, Jake? How can I help you?”
Jake hesitated (犹豫), in broken sentences, “I... I’m trying to find the library. Could you, uh, tell me where it is?”
Ms. Brock’s face broke into a smile, “Of course! It’s down the hall, second door on your left. You can’t miss it.”
Relief (宽慰) washed over Jake’s face. “Thank you, Ms. Brock.”
As the weeks passed, Jake turned to Ms. Brock for help more often. Whether it was talking about his homework or simply sharing his thoughts on the latest book they were studying, he found comfort in her patient encouragement. Ms. Brock, in turn, noticed Jake’s growing confidence.
Everything went on well till a rainy Thursday afternoon. Jake held a test paper in his hand after class. There was a C on the paper. Ms. Brock walked to him.
“Everything alright, Jake?”
Jake replied, “I... I’m not sure if I can keep up with the class. The reading is getting harder, and I feel I’m falling behind.”
Ms. Brock’s expression softened,“ Jake, learning is not a race. It’s about understanding at your own speed. You’re doing great-I see your hard work every day.”

Once I got to sixth grade and switched to private school, our entire student body was assigned to either the Red or the White team.

The structures are mainly symmetrical (对称的), and their defensive features include ironclad gates, escape tunnels, narrow openings for weapons under the dark-tiled roofs, and a water well.

13. What is most important for residents during a long period of conflict?

Jake was new to the school-a shy freshman feeling at a loss for high school life. He often found himself lost in the sea of faces and lockers. Ms. Brock, his English teacher, noticed this quiet young man from the first day of class.
Jake lowered his head, “I just... I want to do well. But sometimes it feels difficult to deal with it.”

And two days later, Jake got the test result—A. His hard work and Ms. Brock’s encouragement paid off.
With the score, Jake rushed to Ms. Brock’s office excitedly. “I just want to say... thank you, Ms. Brock. For everything,” Jake said. “You’ve grown so much, Jake. Remember, learning doesn’t stop here. Keep exploring, keep questioning, and never stop believing in yourself,” Ms. Brock said with pride. Jake nodded, “I will. Thank you, Ms. Brock.” As Jake turned to leave, Ms. Brock called after him,“ Oh, and Jake?” He turned back. “You’ll always have a home here,” she said softly.
