If you want to know more about them, please click here or visit http://www.buddhanet.net/festival.htm Songkran—Thailand Dates: 13 th-15th, April In Thailand, people celebrate a festival called Songkran, when people head out to the streets with water guns to spray (喷洒) everyone who walks past. It’s a very important traditional celebration in the country. Naghol—Vanuatu Dates: Every Saturday from April to May Every year, villagers come together to celebrate the harvest of yams (甘薯), an important part in the people’s diet in Vanuatu. The festival is most famous for its “land diving (潜水) ceremony”. During the ceremony men and boys dive to the ground from high wooden towers with only two thin vines (藤) tied to their feet. Cherry Blossom Viewing—Japan Dates: The cherry blossom season is different from year to year depending on the weather. The festival is well-known. The Japanese celebrate the days when the flowers finally blossom. Only a few days later, the petals (花瓣) fall to the ground, like pink snowflakes. That means the traditional festival only lasts for several days. In Japan, almost everyone has picnics in the parks to view the flowers. Sinhalese New Year—Sri Lanka Dates: 13th or 14th, April Just like in many other countries in South East Asia, this is the time when people celebrate the traditional New Year, an ancient celebration which marks the end of the harvest season and is one of two times of the year when the sun is straight above Sri Lanka. There are a lot of delicious foods during the celebration. 1 What will most likely happen to a tourist walking in the street during SongKran in Thailand? A. He will get wet. B. He will hurt his feet. C. He will be treated to delicious foods. D. He will see some petal falling. 2. How is Cherry Blossom Viewing different from the other festivals? A. It is a traditional festival. B. It is a very famous festival. C. Its date is different every year. D. It provides visitors with delicious foods. 3. Where are you most likely to find the text? A. On TV. B. In a report. C. On the Internet. D. In the newspaper. B Recently, my husband and three kids were playing in the Mediterranean, swimming and floating in the picture-perfect sea. It was extremely beautiful in Majorca, Spain. The way the sun danced across the water and how the blue horizon was dotted with storybook sailboats were such beautiful scenes. I almost couldn’t believe my eyes. My husband and I always dreamed about taking our kids on a trip around the world. It was something we always wanted to do “one day”. It was one of the things we talked at length about, when we imagined our life with the children we hoped we would have. Fourteen years later, we had three boys who were growing up faster by the day. It was time to make good on those plans. We spent dozens of hours discussing, researching and planning. We had to learn how to “road school” our kids and arrange time off from work. We renewed our passports, and then packed our bags. We showed our kids the world. It was about experiencing the dozens of flights and trains and taxis together. We showed them how wonderful, how diverse, and how amazing the world is. We wanted them to learn all that we had learned ourselves, through our own travels as young adults. But there was something more than that: What we really wanted is to slow down time. We wanted the days to last a bit longer, and the weeks to take their time. The years with our children are going too fast. We wanted to put the brakes on (阻止) our busy lives for a year, and just be with our kids. We wanted a break from the daily morning routine of making lunches, eating breakfast and rushing out of the door in time for school. We needed a family time-out. It was a wonderful two-month trip in Europe, full of incredible moments. And when we look back at our lives, I know we’ll be glad we did it. I know we’ll be happy that this is a chapter of the story of our family. 4. What was the author’s attitude toward the trip when planning it? A. Worried. B. Calm. C. Stressed. D. Eager. 5. What does the underlined part “make good on” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Change. B. Realize. C. Improve. D. Cancel. 6. What was the author’s main purpose of taking this trip? A. To teach her children to value life. B. To allow her children to see the world. C. To enjoy a family breakaway from their life routine. D. To enable her children to learn something out of class. 7. How did the author feel about their two-month stay in Europe? A. Tired. B. Satisfied. C. Inspired. D. Disappointed. C College and high-school teachers are expressing concern about ChatGPT, an AI program that allows people with limited writing skills to create high-quality texts. It calls into question how and why we teach writing at all. If AI can do a fairly good job at most writing tasks, why spend so much time learning writing in school? In fact, learning to write goes beyond just mastering grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. It involves much more. For one thing, it’s about learning to turn a loose set of thoughts into a clear line of reasoning — a skill that is useful for everyone, not just those who enjoy writing or need to do a lot of it for work. Learning to write also trains your imagination to construct the person who will read your words. It puts you in relation to someone you may not know, someone who may even not exist. When you learn to write, you learn to meet their needs in an unfamiliar context. Even ordinary assignments teach students to predict what another person knows and expects. Writing is never simply self-expression. It’s expression to a specific audience for a specific purpose. In some cases, like a love letter, a writer knows their audience very well. In others, the audience is every bit a work of the imagination as a novel’s characters are. Writers, then, should give up trying to address the public at large, but should imagine that a friend, though not the closest friend, is listening to our talk. When this act of imagination is done well, a reader can feel deeply understood, as if a stranger has told them some previously unknown truth about themselves. That’s how I felt reading “Difference Maker” — an essay about parenthood. While our situations were unique, naming the problem provided a deeper understanding. It seems unavoidable that large-language models of AI will allow us to offload some of the writing tasks that students learn in school. But we can’t allow ourselves to lose the capacity to empathize (共情) with distant strangers at just the moment when we’re more able than ever to communicate with them. 8. What is teachers’ concern about ChatGPT? A. It’s a challenge to apply it to teaching. B. It’s hard to grade a paper written by it. C. It limits students’ imagination and creativity. D. It questions the necessity of teaching writing. 9. What does the author think of learning to write? A. It helps with logical thinking. B. It is a basic skill for everyone. C. It focuses on correct expression. D. It is closely related to social skills. 10. What makes writing effective according to the text? A. Expressing oneself. B. Targeting intended readers. C. Conveying imaginative ideas. D. Creating attractive characters. 11. What may be a suitable title for the text? A. What AI Can’t Teach the Writing Students B. ChatGPT Writing VS Traditional Writing C. Never Lose the Capacity for Empathy D. What Is the Future for AI Writing D Many of us would listen to music while we are work thinking that it will help us to concentrate on the task at hand. In fact, recent research has found that music can have beneficial effects on creativity. The idea that listening to music while working is good for output probably has its roots in the so-called “Mozart Effect”. Put simply, the reasoning ability is increased immediately after listening to the music of Mozart’s, compared to no sound at all. How sounds affect performance has been the topic of research for over 40 years. It is observed through a phenomenon called the irrelative sound effect. To study the irrelative sound effect, participants are asked to complete a simple task which requires them to recall a series of numbers or letters in an exact order. The difficult thing is doing this while ignoring the background noise. Two key characteristics of the irrelative sound effect are required. First, subjects (受试者) are required to use their memory ability. Second, the sound must contain acoustical (听觉的) variation. The irrelative sound effect comes from attempting to process two sources of ordered information at the same time. One is from the task, and the other is from the sound. Unfortunately, only former is required to perform in the recall task, and the effort to prevent processing irrelevant order information from the sound hinders the memory ability. A similar problem is also seen when reading in the presence of music with lyrics (歌词). In this situation, the two sources of words from the task and the sound will hinder each other. The cost is poorer performance of the task in the presence of music with lyrics. What this all means is that whether having music playing in the background helps or hinders performance depends on the task and the type of music and only understanding this relationship will help people maximize their productivity levels 12. What is “Mozart Effect” mentioned in paragraph2? A. To explain how music can help people relax. B. To show music can improve performance. C. To advise people to listen to Mozart's music. D. To stress Mozart’s music gains wide uses. 13. What does the underlined word “hinders” in paragraph 5 mean? A. Promotes. B. Improves. C. Criticizes. D. Prevents. 14. What is the writer trying to do in paragraph 6? A. Support an idea. B. Make a contrast. C Introduce a topic. D. Describe a fact. 15. In which part of a magazine can we read this text? A. Sports. B. Travel. C. Fiction. D. Music. How satisfied are you with your life? How good do you feel every day? It was something we always wanted to do “one day”. It was one of the things we talked at length about, when we imagined our life with the children we hoped we would have.(我和丈夫一直梦想着带孩子去环游世界。 可知,作者和丈夫计划和孩子去旅行;根据第四段中的“It was about experiencing the dozens of flights and trains and taxis together. We showed them how wonderful, how diverse, and how amazing the world is. We wanted them to learn all that we had learned ourselves, through our own travels as young adults.(它是关于一起经历几十次飞行、火车和出租车的旅行。 可知,作者和丈夫计划和孩子“实现”了此前的旅行计划,因此根据第三段的“Fourteen years later, we had three boys who were growing up faster by the day. It was time to make good on those plans.(14年后,我们有了三个男孩,他们一天比一天快。 根据倒数第二段中的“We wanted to put the brakes on our busy lives for a year, and just be with our kids. And when we look back at our lives, I know we’ll be glad we did it. I know we’ll be happy that this is a chapter of the story of our family.(这是一次美妙的两个月欧洲之旅,充满了令人难以置信的时刻。 C College and high-school teachers are expressing concern about ChatGPT, an AI program that allows people with limited writing skills to create high-quality texts. What Is the Future for AI Writing 【答案】8. D 9. A 10. B 11. 根据第一段“If AI can do a fairly good job at most writing tasks, why spend so much time learning writing in school?(如果人工智能在大多数写作任务中都能做得相当好,那为什么要花那么多时间在学校学习写作呢?)” 根据第二段“For one thing, it’s about learning to turn a loose set of thoughts into a clear line of reasoning — a skill that is useful for everyone, not just those who enjoy writing or need to do a lot of it for work.(首先,它是关于学习将一套松散的想法变成一条清晰的推理线——这是一项对每个人都有用的技能,而不仅仅是那些喜欢写作或需要为工作做很多事情的人)”可知,作者认为学习写作有助于逻辑思维。故选A。 根据第四段“Writing is never simply self-expression. It’s expression to a specific audience for a specific purpose.(写作从来不是简单的自我表达。 通读全文,并根据第一段“College and high-school teachers are expressing concern about ChatGPT, an AI program that allows people with limited writing skills to create high-quality texts. It calls into question how and why we teach writing at all. If AI can do a fairly good job at most writing tasks, why spend so much time learning writing in school?(大学和高中教师对ChatGPT表达了担忧,这是一个人工智能程序,可以让写作技能有限的人创作高质量的文本。 A。 D Many of us would listen to music while we are work, thinking that it will help us to concentrate on the task at hand. One is from the task and the other is from the sound. What this all means is that whether having music playing in the background helps or hinders performance depends on the task and the type of music and only understanding this relationship will help people maximize their productivity levels. 12. C. Introduce a topic. D. Describe a fact. 15. In which part of a magazine can we read this text? A. Sports. B. Travel. C. Fiction. D. Music. B 13. D 14. A 15. 根据第二段中“Put simply, the reasoning ability is increased immediately after listening to the music of Mozart's, compared to no sound at all.(简而言之,这项研究发现,与没有声音相比,听过莫扎特的音乐后,人的空间推理能力会立即提高。)” 划线词句前文“The irrelative sound effect comes from attempting to process two sources of ordered information at the same time. One is from the task, and the other is from the sound. 和划线词句前半部分“Unfortunately, only former is required to perform in the recall task (不幸的是,在回忆任务中只需要执行前者)”说明在回忆任务中不需要处理来自声音的不相关的信息,从而推知划线部分“and the effort to prevent processing irrelevant order information from the sound hinders the memory ability.(努力阻止从声音中处理不相关的顺序信息会hinder记忆能力)”中划线词应为“阻碍”的意思。 根据第六段“A similar problem is also seen when reading in the presence of music with lyrics(歌词). In this situation, the two sources of words from the task and the sound will hinder each other. The cost is poorer performance of the task in the presence of music with lyrics.(当在有歌词的音乐中阅读时,也会出现类似的问题。 故选A项。 根据第一段“Many of us would listen to music while we are work, thinking that it will help us to concentrate on the task at hand. In fact, recent research has found that music can have beneficial effects on creativity.(我们中的许多人会在工作时听音乐,认为这可以帮助我们专注于手头的任务。 和最后一段“What this all means is that whether having music playing in the background helps or hinders performance depends on the task and the type of music and only understanding this relationship will help people maximize their productivity levels.(这一切都意味着,背景音乐是否有助于或阻碍表现取决于任务和音乐类型,只有理解这种关系才能帮助人们最大化他们的生产力水平)”以及全文可知,本文主要讲述了人们通常认为背景音乐能够让人们专注工作,从而提高工作效率。 How satisfied are you with your life? It’s something that you can develop with continuing practice. 可知,前文讲述快乐程度在一定程度上受到基因的影响,后文提到幸福可以通过持续的练习来培养,所以空处应是一个过渡句,和前文构成转折关系,所以E项“But even if you’re not usually a happy person, you can change that.
