Lauren and Andrew Gruel, owners of a seafood restaurant, Calico Fish House, tend to think locally. Most of their seafood is sourced from local fishermen. However, this week, their focus shifted when wildfires erupted near Los Angeles. The Gruels transformed their restaurant into a wildfire relief station, organizing the delivery of donated goods to affected communities.
The fires have caused significant destruction, with at least 10 deaths and thousands of structures burned. Over 180,000 people have evacuated (撤离), with many more under evacuation warnings. “It touches at your heartstrings (心弦),” Lauren Gruel said, “you could see the smoke in the air from here, and just to think of the destruction that they’re experiencing really just breaks your soul.”
Calico Fish House has become a shelter for many uprooted Los Angelenos seeking safety and better air quality. Volunteers have flooded the restaurant, bringing supplies and offering their help. The restaurant was lined with boxes of clothes, food, and water, ready for distribution. “We’ve seen such an outpouring of support,” Lauren said. “We’re so thankful that people have trusted us to bring the items that they donated to where they need to go.”
Andrew Gruel and volunteers cooked beef and eggs to feed first responders (救援人员) and volunteers in Los Angeles. Calico Fish House also offered free meals to fire victims, with over 50 groups taking advantage of the offer. “If you need to stay here, grab a bite to eat, and figure out your next step, you’re welcome to stay,” Andrew Gruel said.
Alex Ordorica, a local resident, used his truck to help transport supplies. “I just thought it was going to help out. That’s what we’re raised to do,” he said. Despite the dark cloud hanging over them, the community’s spirit of unity and support has been a light of hope in these challenging times.
4. Why did the Gruels transform their local restaurant?
A. To minimize destruction caused by fires.
B. To donate goods to affected communities.
C. To enhance the promotion of their seafood.
D. To aid relief efforts in response to the wildfire.
5. What does the underlined word “uprooted” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Homeless. B. Fearless. C. Aimless. D. Sleepless.
6. What can we know about fire victims from paragraph 4?
A. They all accepted the offer provided by Andrew.
B. They cooked food for responders and volunteers.
C. They were employed by Andrew for their clear goals.
D. They were free to dine and rest at Andrew’s restaurant.
7. Which words can best describe the Gruels?
A. Modest and generous. B. Thoughtful and diligent.

On Dec 4, 2024, Chunjie was included in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. While this recognition marks a significant milestone for Chinese culture, it also brings up again an ongoing debate: What is the most appropriate English translation of Chunjie?
For decades, Chunjie has been widely translated as “Spring Festival” in English, a term now adopted by UNESCO in its lowercase form. Beyond this, two other English translations are currently in use: Chinese New Year and Lunar New Year. All the three terms are documented in major Chinese-English dictionaries, with “Spring Festival” being the most favored, followed by “Chinese New Year”. Despite its widespread use, some people believe that calling it “Lunar New Year” might not fully reflect its deep cultural roots in China, as the Chinese calendar is a lunisolar calendar (阴阳历), which combines elements of both the lunar and solar cycles. This means it’s not purely based on the lunar phases, making the term “Lunar New Year” scientifically inaccurate.
Language changes quickly, and dictionaries may not always be up-to-date. However, large language databases like the NOW (News on the Web) Corpus can track real-time language use. As of January 2025, the Corpus shows that “Chinese New Year” is the most frequently used term in the English-speaking world, followed by “Lunar New Year,” with “Spring Festival” being used less often. This reflects the differences in translation preferences between China and the West.
Now that the Spring Festival is recognized by UNESCO, it is time to reconsider its English translation. It is suggested that Chunjie be used as the primary term to emphasize its cultural uniqueness, supported by “Spring Festival” for familiarity and “Chinese New Year” when necessary for international understanding. This approach respects Chinese cultural identity while meeting the needs of global communication. After all, language is not just a tool for communication; it also carries culture, history, and identity.
8. What’s the reason for the inaccuracy of the form “Lunar New Year”?
A. It’s not recognized by UNESCO.
B. It misses the festival’s historical importance.
C. It ignores the solar elements in the Chinese calendar.
D. It’s doesn’t reflect the festival’s connection to spring.
9. What does the NOW Corpus show according to paragraph 3?
A. The term “Spring Festival” is the least used in English.
B. The term “Chunjie” is preferred only by Chinese speakers.
C. The term “Lunar New Year” is increasingly popular in English.
D. The term “Chinese New Year” is most widely used internationally.
10. Why is it suggested that “Chunjie” be used as the primary term for the festival in English?
A. To simplify translation. B. To promote Chinese globally.
C. To highlight its unique culture. D. To update dictionary definitions.
11. What does the passage mainly focus on?
A. The history of Chinese culture. B. The milestone of Chinese culture.
C. The cultural significance of Chunjie. D. The different translations of Chunjie.

Research shows AI can boost creativity for some but decrease it for society overall. Supporters argue AI can serve as an inspiration, while critics claim it only remixes existing work.
Economist Oliver Hauser and Anil Doshi conducted a study to investigate, inviting 300 non-professional writers to write eight-sentence stories. Participants were divided into groups: one generating (产生) ideas independently, another receiving a single AI-generated idea from an AI application, and a third choosing from up to five AI ideas. Both human-only and AI-assisted groups wrote the stories themselves, which were then evaluated by 600 assessors on “novelty” and “usefulness.”
The study found that stories written with AI assistance were considered more novel and useful, especially for those who were least naturally creative. Writers exposed to five AI ideas experienced the greatest boost, with stories rated 8% more novel and 9% more useful compared to those written entirely by humans.
However, a social dilemma (困境) emerged: while AI enhanced individual creativity, it reduced the diversity of novelty in the group. Hauser described this as a “classic social dilemma,” where individuals benefit but the group suffers.
Annalee Newitz, a science fiction author, questioned the findings, stating creativity is hard to quantify in percentages. She found AI often generaled overused ideas, such as employing the phrase “the real treasure was…” in stories about adventures on the open seas. Furthermore, Newitz noted the sci-fi community had already faced the social dilemma, with the magazine Clarkesworld closing online submissions due to an overflow of AI-written stories.
Although Newitz acknowledged people might want to try using AI for writing, she warned it could miss the essence of creative writing, emphasizing, “Creative writing is humans communicating with other humans.”
12. How did Hauser and Doshi conduct their research?
A. By evaluating the writing methods of different participants.
B. By observing the writing process of individual participants.
C. By comparing the writing performance of different groups.
D. By analyzing three writing styles of non-professional writers.
13. What finding is agreed by Hauser?
A. Creativity is challenging to measure in percentages.
B. Less creative writers benefit more from AI assistance.
C. AI enhanced both individual and collective creativity.
D. Human-only group performs better than AI-assisted group.
14. What can we infer about Newitz’s opinion about using AI for writing?
A. AI can weaken human communication. B. AI might help to solve the social dilemma.
C. AI should be used thoughtfully for writing. D. AI should be prohibited for creative writing.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. AI: replaces human story writers. B. AI: generates novel and useful stories.
C. AI: serves as an inspiration in writing. D. AI: boosts creativity for some, but at a cost.

Sleepy and worn out, we stepped off the night train and onto the crowded streets of Berlin. The journey had left us feeling like the walking dead, and the early morning sunlight did little to revive us. Night trains have never been my thing, and the lack of sleep was evident in our heavy steps. We arrived at the hostel (招待所) before it officially opened, so we decided to wait in the quiet park across the street, hoping to catch a moment of rest.
This trip to Berlin was something we had been looking forward to for months. The city’s rich history, diverse culture, and iconic landmarks had always fascinated us, and we were eager to explore everything it had to offer. From the Brandenburg Gate to the Berlin Wall Memorial, our schedule was packed with must-see sights. But first, we needed to shake off the tiredness from the overnight journey and recharge for the adventures ahead.
By 9 a. m., we gathered our strength and approached the hostel office. Inside, a young man was deeply focused on his computer. We assumed we were too early to check in. To our surprise, the young man greeted us warmly. Perhaps noticing the tiredness visible under our eyes, he showed great kindness and arranged for us to check into a charming private room ahead of schedule. Grateful, we sank into the beds and slept soundly until the afternoon.
When I finally awoke from my much-needed nap, I felt a sense of calm. But as I reached for my camera bag to check its contents, my heart sank. It was gone. Panic set in as I anxiously searched every corner of the room but it was nowhere to be found. My mind raced back to our earlier stop at the park. Had I left it there?
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Without a second thought, I rushed out of the hostel, nearly running into the hostel worker on my way out.

When we hurried to the park, only a few dog walkers were there.

“with + 宾语 + 宾语补足语”构成独立主格结构,在句中作伴随状语,此处“ Yuan Yuan inheriting (继承) it from Wu Yaling”是with复合结构。故填with。
故填a。
“____ the opera first gained fame”是一个非限定性定语从句,修饰先行词“Shanghai”,关系词将其代入从句中作地点状语,应用关系副词where引导从句。故填where。
故填has performed/has been performing。
“(show) her emotional and personal growth throughout the story.”

“for years to come”是固定短语,意为“未来几年”,不定式作后置定语。故填to come。

1.续写词数应为150个左右;

When we hurried to the park, only a few dog walkers were there.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Without a second thought, I rushed out of the hostel, nearly running into the hostel worker on my way out.“Sorry!” I blurted out, barely stopping to apologize, my heart pounding and my hands trembling. He noticed my anxious state and gently stepped in front of me, his calm in contrast to my panic. “Hey, slow down,” he said, “What’s wrong?” His steady voice eased my nervousness. I explained about my missing camera and how I thought I’d left it in the park. He nodded understandingly and suggested we check the hostel’s lost-and-found first. When nothing turned up, he offered to accompany me to the park.
When we hurried to the park, only a few dog walkers were there. My eyes darted anxiously across the benches and pathways, while he scanned the area with calm precision. Near the fountain, he pointed to a bench. “Is that it?” he asked. My heart leapt as I spotted my camera bag, untouched. Relief washed over me. “Thank you so much.” I thanked him repeatedly, my voice shaking, while he simply nodded, his smile never fading. With my camera safe, I was ready to embrace Berlin’s adventures, carrying not just memories of its sights, but also of the stranger who restored my faith in humanity.
