Mindful eating doesn’t come naturally to me. I’d developed the habit of doing several things at once, like eating and reading. It felt like dead time not to use the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. I’ve been guilty of eating a really healthy diet - while barely noticing it.
It took an 11-year-old to truly show me what eating mindfully looks like. Many years ago, when my daughter came home after her first day at secondary school, I fired a flow of questions at her: “Did I you make new friends?”, “Were the teachers nice?” Entirely focusing on a cheese sandwich, she looked at me pointedly, “Mummy, I’ll tell you all about it in a bit. I just want to enjoy eating this sandwich quietly.” So I bit my lip and watched her close her eyes, smile and “Mmmm” as she chewed. It was a sharp contrast to how I ate my lunch.
We’re so used to reducing time that we’ve downgraded eating to something to be squeezed (挤压) in while we’re doing something else. Our grab-and-go culture encourages eating in a rush — the quicker the better. All too often, we end up wolfing down a few biscuits between calls as something to keep us going. But there’s a huge downside to our disconnected eating. When you don’t fully experience your food, you don’t pay attention to whether you’re hungry or not — or full or not.
Our social media feeds are flooded with healthy recipes and there’s no end of focus on the quality of our food. But there’s comparatively little focus on how we eat it — and actually that makes all the difference. So, let’s turn our attention to eating slowly, mindfully and with enjoyment. Here’s a challenge for you: Can you practice eating at least one meal a day without any distractions (分心)? No smartphone, no TV, no radio, no newspaper, no magazines? You might well feel a lot of resistance to it at first ... but keep trying!
4. What was the author’s initial opinion about multitasking while eating?
A. It was a waste of time. B. It worked people to death.
C It was an efficient time-using way. D. It dragged people from food enjoyment.
5. What did the author learn from her daughter?
A. To fully enjoy simple eating pleasure. B. To maintain independence in growth.
C. To effectively balance work and relaxation. D. To prioritize family over personal activities.
6. What does disconnected eating lead to?
A. Forgetting being on a diet. B. Being particular about food.
C. Addiction to multitask lifestyle. D. Unawareness of hunger and fullness.
7. What message does the author mainly convey?
A. Modern lifestyles need big changes.
B. Technology has bad impacts on dining habits.
C. Enjoying meals attentively enhances well-being.
D. Healthy recipes are more important than eating style.

A Northwestern University-led team of researchers has developed a new fuel cell that harvests energy from microbes (微生物) living in dirt. About the size of a standard paperback book, the soil-powered technology could fuel underground sensors used in modern agriculture and green infrastructure. This could potentially offer a sustainable, renewable alternative to batteries that release harmful chemicals into the ground.
To test the new fuel cell, the researchers used it to power sensors measuring soil condition and detecting touch, a capability that could be valuable for tracking passing animals. To enable wireless communications, the researchers also equipped the soil-powered sensor with a tiny antenna to transmit (传输) data to a neighboring base station by reflecting existing radio frequency signals. Not only did the fuel cell work in both wet and dry conditions, but its power also outlasted similar technologies by 120%.
The research was published on Jan. 12 in the Proceedings of the ACM on Interactive, Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies.
“The number of electronic devices used in modern agriculture as a way to improve crop productions is constantly growing,” said Northwestern’s Bill Yen, who led the work. “If we imagine a future with numerous devices like these, we cannot build every one of them out of lithium (锂) and heavy metals that are dangerous to the environment. We need to find alternatives that can provide low amounts of energy to power a widespread network of devices.”
In a search for solutions, the researchers turned to soil microbial fuel cells(MFC), which use special microbes to break down soil and generate a low amount of energy to power sensors. As long as there is organic carbon in the soil for the microbes to break down, the fuel cell can potentially last forever.
“These microbes are common; they already live in soil everywhere,” said Northwestern’s George Wells, a senior author of the study. “We can use very simple engineered systems to collect their electricity. We’re not going to power entire cities with this energy, but we can collect tiny amounts of energy to fuel practical, low-power applications.”
The researchers plan to develop a soil-based MFC made from fully biodegradable (生物可降解的) materials as their next step.
8. What can we know from the new fuel cell?
A. It was not limited by soil conditions.
B. The power it produced increased by 20%.
C. It was made from fully biodegradable materials.
D. It will completely replace conventional batteries soon.
9. What can we infer from Bill Yen’s words in paragraph 4?
A. Electronic devices are widely used in industries.
B. It is essential for our environment to develop the new fuel cell.
C. Lithium and heavy metals are dangerous to the environment.
D. Current electronic devices can’t provide large amounts of energy.
10. What is George Wells’ attitude toward the fuel cell?
A. Doubtful. B. Dismissive. C. Pessimistic. D. Approving.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Conventional Batteries Are Giving Way to New Fuel Cell.
B. Microbes Can Break Down Soil and Generate Energy.
C. New Fuel Cell Harvests Energy from Microbes in Soil.
D. New Fuel Cell Fuels Underground Sensors in Agriculture.
D
Humor plays a great role in helping one deal with stress, anger, fear, anxiety and other difficult emotions. Sometimes, that means purposefully shoring up defenses against hard times to come. Other times it can mean laughing when you want to cry, or cracking an illogical joke when it feels like the sky is falling and Earth is on fire.
To psychologists, humor is an unconscious coping mechanism, a kind of strategic behavior or thought. Not all of these strategies are beneficial: Drinking or overeating, for example, are more dangerous coping mechanisms, whereas humor taps creativity into stress, which can enable a viewpoint shift and block distressing emotions.
And of course, there’s the physical reaction of humor: laughter. With it comes better breathing, muscle relaxation and a higher pain tolerance. “The stress is there; you just don’t feel it as much,” says psychologist Sultanoff.
Of course, humor isn’t foolproof: Making the wrong joke in the wrong way is just as likely to increase stress and disconnection. Mean-spirited or disparaging (贬低的) humor actually causes people to be further apart and increases division.
“Humor can arise during stress without cause or effort to make it. But humor can also be played consciously,” Sultanoff says, adding that he sometimes travels with a clown nose to find fun in life’s everyday routine. “Joyful use of humor builds psychological antibodies (抗体),” he says.
But taking up the power of humor doesn’t mean ignoring the negatives. The point is not to never feel difficult emotions. “Stress is there for a reason, and it’s to call your attention to a problem that needs to be solved,” Sultanoff says. “When you experience a negative emotion like sadness or anger or frustration, it’s important to recognize why that’s there.” Turning to humor too soon may prevent someone from processing emotions in a healthy way, increasing stress rather than decreasing it. “By expressing humor you give yourself a break. And we all need a little break,” Sultanoff says.
12. How is humor helpful as a coping mechanism?
A. It prevents hard times coming. B. It means an emotional release.
C. It generates positive mindsets. D. It inspires artistic creativity.
13. Why does the author talk about laughter?
A. To correct a misunderstanding. B. To illustrate an effect of humor.
C. To distinguish humor from it. D. To warn the danger of stress.
14. Which of the following is called disparaging humor in paragraph 4?
A. Making your friend look stupid. B. Telling a story in a funny way.
C. Wearing clown clothes at a party. D. Laughing at your own mistakes.
15. What does Sultanoff think of a difficult emotion?
A. It’s something we should avoid. B. It’s a reminder of our problems.
C. It draws our attention to humor. D. It gives us a break from routine.

Find an insect in your food can be a moment of horror that kills the mood and you appetite immediately. But that might be about to change. ___16___
The market research predicts the global market for edible (可食用的) insects will grow sharply. So whats behind this expected increase in appetite for insects? ___17___ And the answer lies in understanding how insects compare to other food types in terms of production and farming.
Insects produce less harmful gas than most mainstream farm animals per kilo of live weight. A cow, for example, produces 2.8 kg of greenhouse gas per kilo of live body weight. Insects, on the other hand, produce just 2 grams. ___18___Far each kilo it weighs, a cow needs 10 kg of feed. Insects, on the other hand, need just 1.7 kg.
Water, which is becoming an increasingly rare resource in some parts of the world and is used liberally in intensive farming, offers another interesting comparison. To produce a single gram of insect protein, you’d need 23 litres of water. ___19___But to get that same gram of protein from cattle, you need 112 litres of water.
___20___ Compared with raising traditional livestock (家畜) such as sheep, pigs or cattle, farming insects generally means that there will be no more dealing with mud and dirt and an end to changing heavy bags of feed. And forget about having to go outdoors in all weather conditions to manhandle livestock. The requirement for investment in equipment will be different, too. This will be farming on a much smaller scale, reducing the need for large and expensive machinery.
It may not be too long before we can all buy bag of edible insects at our local grocery store.
A. That might sound like a lot.
B. There are a number of factors in play.
C. Possibly, well soon be voluntarily enjoying insects.
D. Insects weigh much less than traditional farm animals.
E. For farmers, raising insects can be much easier and save money.
F The majority of individuals have a strong dislike for insects.
G. They also consume fewer resources than traditional livestock.

It was probably her giggling(咯咯笑) that drew my attention. English reading really wasn’t that funny as far as I knew.
It was early May and I was facing a class of sixteen kids. Though I had almost three years of teaching, this particular sixth grade class had pushed me to the limits of my patience far too many times, and I couldn’t wait to wave goodbye to them for the summer.
I had kept away from the ideal of my first year of teaching. That first year I’d covered up the small hole in the window with an inspirational poster. I’d decorated the walls with pictures of famous universities. I told the kids daily that they always had something worth struggling for. Together we would work hard and make something of their lives.
The problem, of course, was that my ideals kept being defeated by reality. Not just the reality of troubled families. I was also faced with the basic reality of the twelve- and thirteen-year-old mind. The universal mind, “You can’t make me!”
And now I was faced with a giggle when I should have had only full attention. Walking over to the young peacebreaker, I asked for the note she had in her hands. Frozen, she refused to give it to me. I waited, all attention in the room on the quiet battle between teacher and student. When she finally handed it over, saying, “Okay, but I didn’t draw it,” which showed this wasn’t just an ordinary note being passed.
After getting the class going on an English reading test, I finally had a chance to look through it. It was a hand-drawn picture of me, eyes monitoring widely, teeth blackened, and the words “I’m stupid” coming out of my mouth. There was no doubt about who it was supposed to be.
I managed to fold up the picture calmly. My mind, however, was working angrily and wanting to criticize some students on the scene. I figured I knew the two most likely candidates for drawing the picture. Maybe it was high time that I did it!
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Thankfully, calmness returned to my mind.

C. It was an efficient time-using way.
【答案】4. C 5. A 6. D 7. C

The researchers plan to develop a soil-based MFC made from fully biodegradable (生物可降解) materials as their next step.

【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. B

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Thankfully, calmness returned to my mind.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Looking over the notes later, I realized I was too strict with them.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Thankfully, calmness returned to my mind. Suppressing my pride, I showed them the picture. The whole class was silent as I told them how hurtful this was for a teacher. Struggling to control my emotion, I demanded there must be a reason behind for such a picture and that now was their chance to tell me anything they needed to tell me. Asking them to get out of paper and write silently, I sniffled in the back of the classroom.
Looking over the notes later, I realized I was too strict with them. Where I thought I was driving them to success, I was actually driving them away. After class, the girl walked up, handing me a card embarrassedly. One side of the card was sincere regret for the ugly joke while the other side the appeal for forgiveness. I was deeply moved. Meanwhile, a great sense of guilt arose for being too harsh. After all, students appreciate being appreciated, for teachers’ encouragement is their best motivating force.
