1. 能够准确理解本单元的单词和短语。
2. 能够掌握和运用本单元的重点句子。
3. 复习掌握形容词和副词的比较级的用法;学习运用形容词和副词对事物进行比较并得出自己的结论,并且说明自己的理由;学会通过对比的方法说服他人。
4. 熟练掌握句子的重音、正确朗读句子。

教学过程
Step 1 Lead-in
1. Show the picture in Activity 1 to talk about it.
(1) Say what life was like in the early 1980s.
(2) Say what life is like today.
2. Introduce new words and expressions.
【设计意图】通过展示20世纪80年代的图片,让学生谈论过去的生活与现在的生活,复习比较级的用法,导入本单元话题——变化。
Step 2 Listen and answer
1. Let the students look through the questions in Activity 2.
2. Let the students listen to the tape and answer the questions in pairs.
(1) What is the history homework?
(2) What is the question they need to answer?
(3) What does Betty ask?
(4) What does Daming ask?
【设计意图】通过浏览问题及听力训练,锻炼学生捕捉重要信息的能力,小组问答活动可以提高学生的语言表达能力。
Step 3 Listen and read
1. Listen to the tape and then answer:
(1) What are Betty and her mother talking about?
They are talking about life in the past and now.
(2) How many things have they compared?
Four—health, medicine, transport, work.
2. Read the conversation carefully and finish Activity 3. Choose the correct answers.
3. Check the answers together.

Step 4 Practice
1. Ask the students to read the words and expressions in the box in Activity 4.
2. Complete the questions with the words or expressions in the box.

(4) If something is ______, is it more or less?
(5) Do you think people ______ take more exercise than they do today?

3. Ask the students to check their answers with a partner.
4. Now work in pairs. Ask and answer.
5. Ask some pairs to act the dialogue out.

Step 5 Pronunciation and speaking
1. Read and predict which words the speaker is likely to stress in Activity 5.
Some people think life in the past was simpler and healthier than today. More wealth sometimes means less health. When the number of cars is doubled, the pollution is also doubled, or even worse.
2. Play the tape once without stopping.
3. Play the tape again and ask the whole class to repeat.
4. Finish Activity 6. Read the paragraph in Activity 5 aloud.

Step 6 Work in pairs
Finish Activity 7.
T: Just now Betty and her mother talked about the life today and the life in the past. Can you talk about the same question to compare what’s better or worse about education, health and so on? Discuss the question in your group.
1. Work in pairs. Answer the question and give your reasons.
A: Is life better today than in the past?
B: Yes, it is. I think it’s because.../No, it isn’t. I think...
2. Now make some sentences to talk about what is better or worse in education, environment and health.
3. Collect the sentences and write a short passage.
