Once referred to as an ‘Insta-hiker’, Josh is a juggler (玩杂耍的人) of many different joys: his wife, children, friends, job as a Corporate Actions analyst, a directorship at Black Professionals Scotland. The label could be far from the truth.
His job is high-pressured and time-sensitive, a suit-and-tie environment, in which one tiny mistake can cost millions. But hill walking is not a way to run from reality. “I’m not escaping from anything,” Josh claims firmly. You wouldn’t encourage someone to live for their job, and he applies that logic to the things he loves to do, welcoming the outdoors into his life on his own terms.
Rather, people means everything to Josh. “I’m not a solo explorer. It’s about the journey, people and conversations, the little moments as much as it is about big moments.” This inspired Black Scottish Adventurers. His relationship with the Highlands began keeping pace with his move to Scotland over a decade ago, born of a sense of fun and freedom, rather than a desire for challenge.
With over a decade of hillwalking behind him, Josh started encouraging Black people into the mountains through a WhatsApp group for like-minded individuals. Now, the BSA community and team are promoting inclusion and outdoors access for the Black community.
Josh says, “Being in the hills is an extension of my life, of who I am, and who I want to be.” He goes into the mountains when he wants to, in order to integrate with the natural world. But he’s as likely to see friends in Edinburgh as he is to walk a Munro. He quickly admits “I’m a social animal, anyway!”
Josh’s ability to live in the moment mountainside or not, is refreshing. He gives “glory to those who seek the mountains as a shelter,” but adds, “I want to find balance between doing what I love and being with people I love so I don’t put myself in a hole. I strengthen the relationships I have with my non-hillwalking family and friends, and won’t separate myself from possibilities.”
4. Why does Josh climb mountains?
A. To escape from stressful work. B. To enjoy the pleasure and freedom.
C. To satisfy his curiosity about nature. D. To encourage black people to live for job.
5. What does Josh do for Black people?
A. Make hill accessible to them. B. Further inclusion of black people.
C. Encourage them to climb mountains. D. Help them find balance between work and play.
6. What does the author want to tell us in the last but one paragraph?
A. Josh expects to be an adventurer.
B. Josh gets lost in his pressured work.
C. Josh thinks highly of hillwalking as well as friends.
D. Josh climbs mountains so as to make peace with nature.
7. Which words can describe Josh best?
A Considerate and warm-hearted. B. Cautious and people-centered.
C. Ambitious and highly-motivated. D. Straightforward and independent.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. C 7. A

Three minutes of looking at red light once a week may help our eyesight, new research suggests. The findings show that red light might be a cheap and easy treatment for declines in color vision as we get older.
Last year, researchers from University College London did a study on red light therapy (疗法). 24 healthy volunteers, aged between 28 and 72, were asked to look at red light for three minutes every day for two weeks. Tests later found that the eyesight of people over the age of 40 improved.
To test the possible weak points of their therapy, they did a new study this year. Instead of using the light every day, they used it once a week. The new study included 20 volunteers, aged between 34 and 70, all with healthy vision. Some received red light therapy in the morning, and others received it in the afternoon. They were then tested on their color vision up to a week later.
On the whole, those who got the treatment in the morning showed a 17% improvement in their color vision, even a week later. Those who got the treatment in the afternoon did not have any improvement.
“We’ve found that one single exposure (暴露) to red light in the morning can greatly improve declining vision,” said lead author Glen Jeffrey.
The findings do support their earlier work, and they might make the treatment more practicable, since a once-weekly treatment is easier to stick to than a daily one. But the team’s promising results are still drawn on small numbers of healthy volunteers. Larger studies would be needed to show the benefits of red light therapy.
“In the near future, a once-a-week three-minute exposure to deep red light could be done while making a coffee or listening to a song, and such a simple thing could change eye care and vision around the world,” Jeffrey said.
Given its low cost (as little as $15) per device, and simplicity, the team is excited about the future of their therapy.
8. What plays a key role in red light therapy?
A. The time of day for treatment.
B. The device used in the treatment.
C. The time that one treatment lasts.
D. The number of treatments received.
9. What makes it necessary to improve the study?
A. The age of the volunteers.
B. The number of the volunteers.
C. The poor vision of the volunteers.
D. The health condition of the volunteers.
10. What is Jeffrey’s attitude towards the future of the therapy?
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Tolerant. D. Hopeful.
11. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To state the importance of eye care.
B. To explain the value of deep red light.
C. To introduce a way to fight vision decline.
D. To encourage aged people to protect their eyesight.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. C
【解析】

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The new study included 20 volunteers, aged between 34 and 70, all with healthy vision. Some received red light therapy in the morning, and others received it in the afternoon. They were then tested on their color vision up to a week later.(这项新研究包括20名年龄在34岁到70岁之间的志愿者,他们都有健康的视力。一些人在早上接受红光治疗,另一些人在下午接受。然后在一周后测试他们的色觉)”以及第四段“On the whole, those who got the treatment in the morning showed a 17% improvement in their color vision, even a week later. Those who got the treatment in the afternoon did not have any improvement.(总的来说,那些在早上接受治疗的人,即使在一周后,他们的色觉也提高了17%。那些在下午接受治疗的人没有任何改善)”可知,研究表明在上午接受红光治疗的志愿者一周后色觉有明显改善,而在下午接受治疗的则没有任何改善。所以在红光疗法中起着关键作用是一天中治疗的时间段。故选A。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第六段“But the team’s promising results are still drawn on small numbers of healthy volunteers. Larger studies would be needed to show the benefits of red light therapy.(但该团队的研究结果仍依赖于小部分健康志愿者。需要更大规模的研究来证明红光疗法的好处)”可知,还需要更多的志愿者来证明红光疗法的好处。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段““In the near future, a once-a-week three-minute exposure to deep red light could be done while making a coffee or listening to a song, and such a simple thing could change eye care and vision around the world,” Jeffrey said.(Jeffrey说道:“在不久的将来,每周一次三分钟的深红光治疗可以在煮咖啡或听歌曲时完成,这样简单的事情可以改变全世界的眼睛保健和视力。”)”可推知,Jeffrey对红光治疗的未来充满了希望。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“The findings show that red light might be a cheap and easy treatment for declines in color vision as we get older.(研究结果表明,随着年龄的增长,红光可能是一种廉价而简单的治疗色觉下降的方法。)”以及通读全文可知,本文主要讲述了研究发现可以利用红光疗法来治疗色觉下降。所以本文的目的是介绍一种对抗视力下降的方法。故选C。

In the rich countries of the West, the electric vehicle revolution is well underway. Climate-conscious consumers drive Teslas or Polestars for reasons of morality and fashion. Poorer countries are also experiencing a wave of electrified trend. In Bangladesh, electric three-wheeler taxis, known as tuk-tuks, are rapidly replacing gas-powered ones on the streets. Such electric vehicles are climate friendly, cost-effective, and help reduce air pollution.
Yet a glance under the hood (引擎盖) of these vehicles reveals a poisonous secret: each tuk-tuk runs on five massive lead-acid batteries (铅酸电池), containing almost 300 pounds of lead in total. Every year and a half or so, when those batteries need to be replaced and recycled, about 60 pounds of lead leak into the environment. Battery recycling, often at small-scale unregulated factories, is a highly profitable but deadly business.
Lead is dangerous, and any exposure to it is harmful to human health. Lead that has entered the environment hurts people on an extraordinary scale. The numerous ways lead enters air, water, soil, and homes across the developing world — and the enormous damage it does to human health, wealth, and welfare — causes one of the biggest environmental crises in the world yet receives little attention.
The World Bank estimates that lead kills 5.5 million people per year, which would make it a bigger global killer than AIDS, malaria, diabetes, and road traffic deaths combined. On top of the shocking deaths, the social burden of lead poisoning is extraordinary, as is its contribution to global inequality — our research on the cognitive (认知的) effects of lead poisoning suggests that it may explain about one-fifth of the educational achievement gap between rich and poor countries.
But unlike many challenges faced by developing countries, lead poisoning is a problem that is fixable with some attention and a relatively modest financial investment. Better monitoring, research, and rules can help protect children all over the world from the dreadful effects of lead poisoning and reduce the massive global costs it brings.
12. How does the author describe the lead problem in paragraph 2?
A. By making a comparison. B. By analyzing hidden causes.
C. By listing convincing numbers. D. By explaining its working principle.
13. What can we learn from the text?
A. Lead enters rich countries in various ways.
B. Lead poisoning may make poor societies poorer.
C. Exposure to lead doesn’t necessarily harm someone.
D. Lead leaking has caused great fear in rich and poor countries.
14. What can be done to solve lead poisoning in developing countries?
A. Fixing these used batteries. B. Putting certain effort and money.
C. Prohibiting the illegal use of lead. D. Reducing the cost of recycling lead.
15. What’s the text mainly about?
A. The global lead poisoning crisis. B. The ways to solve lead problems.
C. The outcomes of using electric vehicles. D. The impacts of lead poisoning on human health.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. B 15. A

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My dad had warned me not to go to work. But at eighteen, I thought I could manage it. Despite the weather reports, I ignored it and left to travel the three miles to my first real job. The going was fine. However, the weather began to change soon after we began our work. My supervisor decided to close the shop and send us home early for safety’s sake.
I could have called my dad. He would have gladly come to pick me up, and the return trip home would likely have included hot chocolate at the diner. But when you’re eighteen, you know it all. I quickly started the car and eased out of the parking lot and drove onto the main road. It looked awfully deserted. Snow was blowing sideways and I could see nothing clearly, as the weather forecast had predicted. I had no choice but to roll down my driver’s side window and reach my head outside to locate lines on the road. To my disappointment, there were no lines in my sight.
I turned down what I thought was a familiar street, but my car slid and turned slightly sideways, and then landed on the wrong side of the road. I tried to back up and go forward. My tires would have none of it. I needed to call my dad, but I didn’t have a cellphone at that moment. Normally, I didn’t cry easily, but I was sobbing. I left the engine running because I was afraid I’d freeze to death.
I figured a police car would go by at any second and then I would be rescued. Then I realized that I had gone down the road leading to an old, abandoned factory. There were no streetlights. There were no houses. There was no through traffic. The radio was issuing warnings to stay off the road. It was too late for me to pay attention to them. Just when I began to blame myself for not listening to my father’s warning, I saw a pickup stopping off the road. It was my father’s.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
My father came looking for me despite the terrible conditions.

I nodded, feeling the weight of his words.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】My father came looking for me despite the terrible conditions. I rolled down the window and the cold air rushed in, but I didn’t care. “Dad,” I said, my voice trembling with a mix of guilt and gratitude. He said nothing. He helped me out of my car and into his. As we drove back, the silence between us was heavy but comfortable. On arriving home, he finally spoke, "You’re eighteen, and I know that you want to be independent. But you have to know when to ask for help."
I nodded, feeling the weight of his words. “I’m sorry, Dad. I should have listened to you.” He smiled softly. “Just remember, it’s not a sign of weakness to ask for help, but it’s a sign of wisdom.” That night, as I lay in bed, I thought about the day’s events. I realized that growing up wasn’t just about doing things on your own; it was also about knowing your limits and understanding when to rely on others. My dad’s timely rescue and his words of wisdom had taught me a valuable lesson that I would carry with me for the rest of my life.

Josh’s ability to live in the moment, mountainside or not, is refreshing.
A. Considerate and warm-hearted. B. Cautious and people-centered.
C. Ambitious and highly-motivated. D. Straightforward and independent.

I turned down what I thought was a familiar street but my car slid and turned slightly sideways, and then landed on the wrong side of the road.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
My father came looking for me despite the terrible conditions.
