PhD students in a research program from University of East Anglia (UEA) were sent the suggestion on Wednesday, setting off shock and anger among the research community. The research program aims to create “leaders in the science and sustainable business of the natural environment”. Dr Addy Lowe, a former PhD student, said, “It's insulting and as if they don’t really care. I think the reality is that PhD students aren’t taken very seriously in this country. They are advising governments, at the forefront of tackling climate change and developing groundbreaking medical research. In reality, they are people with a lot of responsibilities.” Prof Jenni Barclay, the director of the research program, said, “Firstly and clearly, we are sorry for any offence caused. The primary concern here is the cost-of-living crisis and its great impact on our research students. Action is needed soon. Many students are reporting extreme financial difficulties now.” She said the intention of the suggestion “was to provide support as a temporary measure” while the university works out how to persuade UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), which oversees (监管) the most respected research councils and is the country's largest funder. The UKRI has proposed a 2.9% rise in student stipends (助学金)next academic year, which is below inflation (通胀率). Graduate students have warned that could push them into poverty. The Natural Environment Research Council, which funds the UEA program, said the suggestion sent to students “does not reflect” its position. A spokeswoman added, “We do recognize the effect the increased cost of living is having on students and we are looking to see if we can provide further financial support.” 12.
