Travel WiFi is a global company with a simple mission: to keep you connected to the Internet while traveling. They do this by providing WiFi hotspot devices (for rent or purchase) that can be used on 6 different continents.
About the WiFi devices
The Pocket Travel WiFi devices are the size and shape of a small smartphone. The standard Hotspot Rental and the Sapphire 2 (for purchase) share a similar design with one mini-USB charging port. However, it’s important to note that these devices are not waterproof. When fully charged, they should last around 12 hours with fairly regular WiFi use. Additionally, the Sapphire 2 model features indicator lights displaying signal strength and battery life.
Renting VS Buying the travel WiFi device
The cost of purchasing a travel WiFi device is $89 — $109, and then you pay on top of that for data packages ($29.9 for 20 GB in a month). Most frequent travelers buy their own device for convenience.
The rental price is based on the total number of days that you’ll keep the device and how much data you want to use each day. Daily rents range from $6.9 for 1 GB, $12.9 for 2 GB to $16.9 for 3 GB. Week pass ($45.9) with no data limit is also a good choice for short-term travelers.
1. What is an advantage of the travel WiFi device?
A. It is resistant to water. B. It is quick to charge.
C. It is convenient to carry. D. It is excellent in signal.
2. For a 7-day UK trip, what’s the minimum rent for a WiFi device?
A. $6.9. B. $29.9. C. $45.9. D. $48.3.
3 Who is most likely to show interest in the device?
A. A person who will travel abroad.
B. A diver who is training off the coast.
C A student who likes surfing the Internet.
D. A doctor who needs the latest information.

Susan B. Anthony was called terrible names, had things thrown at her, and even had her picture dragged through the streets. But still she didn’t back down. She thought fighting for women’s rights — and the rights of everyone — was too important.
Anthony was born in Massachusetts in 1820. From an early age, she was taught that everyone should be equal. She knew it wasn’t fair that she didn’t have a say in electing (选择) political leaders just because she was a woman. She also thought that it wasn’t right that male teachers made more money than she did. In the 1850s, she started voicing her opinion publicly, stopping people on the streets or giving speeches around the country.
In 1856 Anthony joined the anti-slavery (反对奴隶) movement. She gave speeches, organized meetings, put up posters, and handed out leaflets, even though she faced angry crowds of people who disagreed with her. She met Elizabeth Cady Stanton in 1851, and together they co-founded the National Woman Suffrage Association in 1869 to push for women’s voting (投票) rights. They also launched a newspaper, The Revolution, to spread their message.
African-Americans were recognized as U. S. citizens in 1870, and black men were later given the right to vote. But African-American women, like all women, still did not have the right to vote. This made Anthony so angry that she cast a vote in the 1872 presidential election, an act for which she was arrested (逮捕) and fined $100 — though she never paid the fine.
Anthony worked for more than 50 years for women’s rights, but she never got to legally vote. She died on March 13,1906,14 years before the 19th Amendment (修正案) gave all women the right to vote. Despite this, her efforts were recognized, and the amendment was even referred to as the “Anthony Amendment” in her honor. And in 1979, Anthony became the first woman to be on a U. S. coin, the silver dollar.
4. What was Anthony’s main goal?
A. Ending slavery.
B. Getting paid as much as a man.
C. Gaining voting rights for women.
D. Becoming the first woman to be on a U. S. coin.
5. What happened to Anthony at the age of 49?
A. She launched a newspaper.
B. She was recognized as a U. S. citizen.
C. She started voicing her opinion publicly.
D. She set up the National Woman Suffrage Association.
6. Why was Anthony arrested?
A. For voting in an election. B. For refusing to pay the fine.
C. For stopping people on the streets. D. For joining the anti-slavery movement.
7. Why was the 19th Amendment called the “Anthony Amendment”?
A. Because Anthony voted for it.
B. Because Anthony set it up.
C. Because of Anthony’s great contributions.
D. Because Anthony was an important political leader.
C
There’s an inner desire amongst most people to explore our planet. There’s this sense in modern society that somehow we will find a better existence or we’ll find happiness by going on holiday. I think we’ve almost been conditioned to become tourists, to the extent that a lot of people engage in tourism without actually considering why they’re doing so.
There are plenty of people who will go to the same place every year, because they’re comfortable and familiar with it. People are experiencing less and less the places they are at. They might be there in body, but not necessarily in mind, because a lot of people are constantly thinking: “How am I going to present myself to my social media group back home through my posts on Facebook or Instagram?”
But this is just one side of the problem. On the other side, our travel has taken a toll on the environment. It is reported that the carbon emissions from air travel accounted for 2.5% of global emissions in 2019, and this figure may be three times by 2050.
I admit that there has been a considerable increase in people’s awareness about the environment. And some people say that this can eventually lead to a shift in our behavior as tourists. However, I can’t share their optimism. A lot of research has been done into the extent to which tourists are willing to adapt their behavior. And even those people who regularly consume or behave in an environmentally friendly fashion actually temporarily forget their environmental commitments, and behave like normal tourists. They do suffer some kind of eco-guilt, but nevertheless they continue to travel, and they continue to fly.
I’m old enough to remember when tourism was just the summer holiday, and you would look forward to those two weeks a year when you would go on holiday. It was special and meaningful, but nowadays it is so easy to travel. Travel is now seen as a right, not as a privilege. However, to some extent, I hope there will be a significant rise in the cost of travel, or at least in air travel. In my opinion, only in this way can people realize the value of travel experience and really enjoy it. Also, only in this way can many problems arising with the development of tourism be properly solved.
8. What is the problem with most tourists according to the author?
A. They don’t care about our planet at all.
B. They post too many photos on social media.
C. They can hardly find the right place to explore.
D. They fail to have a meaningful traveling experience.
9. What does the underlined part “taken a toll on” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Improved. B. Damaged. C. Saved. D. Shaped.
10. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. Tourists can hardly be affected by environmental awareness.
B. Tourists are unaware of the effect of their behavior.
C. Tourists’ environmental awareness has been increased.
D. Tourists find it hard to travel without harming the environment.
11. Why does the author hope airline tickets will be more expensive?
A. To limit the development of tourism. B. To create a sense of equality in society.
C. To help people value their traveling experience. D. To make people less excited about travelling.
D
A recent study has found that using wood for construction instead of concrete and steel can reduce emissions. But Tim Searchinger at Princeton University says many of these studies are based on the false foundation that harvesting wood is carbon neutral (碳中和). “Only a small percentage of the wood gets into a timber (木料) product, and a part of that gets into a timber product that can replace concrete and steel in a building,” he says. Efficiencies vary in different countries, but large amounts of a harvested tree are left to be divided into parts, used in short-lived products like paper or burned for energy, all of which generate emissions.
In a report for the World Resources Institute, Searchinger and his colleagues have modelled how using more wood for construction would affect emissions between 2010 and 2050, accounting for the emissions from harvesting the wood. They considered various types of forests and parts of wood going towards construction. They also factored in the emissions savings from replacing concrete and steel.
Under some circumstances, the researchers found significant emissions reductions. But each case required what they considered an unrealistically high portion of the wood going towards construction, as well as rapid growth only seen in warmer places, like Brazil. In general, they found a large increase in global demand for wood would probably lead to rising emissions for decades. Accounting for emissions in this way, the researchers reported in a related paper that increasing forest harvests between 2010 and 2050 would add emissions equal to roughly 10 percent of total annual emissions.
Ali Amiri at Aalto University in Finland says the report’s conclusions about emissions from rising demand are probably correct, but the story is different for wood we already harvest. “Boosting the efficiency of current harvests and using more wood for longer lived purposes than paper would cut emissions,” he says. “We cannot just say we should stop using wood.”
12. What is wrong with previous researches according to Searchinger?
A. They got wrong statistics. B. They included too many factors.
C. They used an incorrect concept. D. They were applied in limited countries.
13. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The process of the new research. B. The background of the new study.
C. The challenge of the new research. D. The achievements of the new study.
14. When will the emissions drop off greatly according to the new study?
A. When wood grows slowly. B. When wood is used to make paper.
C. When wood is used to build a house. D. When wood is harvested in countries like Brazil.
15. What is Ali Amiri’s attitude toward the new result?
A. Favorable. B. Doubtful. C. Critical. D. Objective.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
We’ve all been there before — you’re in conversation things are getting along nicely. ___16___. At that moment, your mind goes completely blank, you don’t know what to say, and you can sense the other person’s eyes wandering as they look for someone else to talk to. That scenario (场面) is terrible, so here are three tips to make sure that you never run out of things to say in conversation again.
Firstly, when you find yourself in that situation where your mind has gone blank, play “Reminds Me of”. That just means that you look to the environment around you and say, “You know, that reminds me of……” and then fill in the blank. ___17___ And it can also work as a follow-up when someone finishes telling a story, which is how many groups of friends interact all the time.
Second, when you ask questions, keep them open-ended as often as possible. ___18___ So rather than saying, “Oh, you’re from Toronto. Do you like it there?” you might say, “How do you like Toronto? I’m curious to hear more about it.” You should get the other person talking about the things that they like, which is going to open up more conversational topics.
___19___ This is the third tip. If you’re in a new group and conversation dies after initial pleasantries, a great question is, “How do you guys all know one another?” There’s almost always some kind of story that conversation can build from. If you’re only speaking to one person, you can say instead, “So what’s your story?” The great thing about this question is that it is so open-ended that the other person will probably guide you towards new topics, usually responding with something like, “You mean what do I do for work or what do I like to do for fun?” ___20___
A. Ask them about their exciting plans for the future.
B. It is great for opening new conversational topics.
C. Then out of nowhere, the awkward silence occurs.
D. You’d better avoid questions inviting a one-word response.
E. That’s because people don’t like to talk to others different from themselves.
F. For the worst scenario when conversation stops suddenly, use saving questions.
G. His or her tone and enthusiasm will tell you the best angle of conversation to continue with.

47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement fed the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show?” She grinned, “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

A Traditional Chinese Culture Week
A traditional Chinese culture week campaign was launched last week in our school to enhance students’confidence in our national culture.
During the campaign, we students were encouraged to participate in numerous cultural activities, including singing Chinese folk songs, attending Chinese calligraphy classes and introducing traditional Chinese festivals. Every one of us chose one to our taste and we enjoyed ourselves very much.
The campaign was a success and has gained in popularity among us students, which will encourage us tofurther spread Chinese culture in future.

【答案】I was completely knocked out by the news. What should I do? Having prepared for such a long time, I didn’t think of that coming up. Feeling at a loss, I was brainstorming as hard as I could to think of a solution, when a gentle touch on my back brought me back to reality. It was my mum, who looked at me with care and concern. “You have prepared for it enough. You can do it by yourself.” She said after my stumbled explanation. I looked back at her eyes, and a sense of confidence and warmness swelled up in my heart. Yes, I could do it myself.
Finally came the big moment. Looking around the audience, I stepped onto the stage, with butterflies in my stomach. My voice trembled at first, but with the melodies flew around, the nervousness was gone with the wind. Emotions filled in my song, I performed as naturally as I spoke every day. I saw my mum, who was looking at me with reassurance and care. It turned out to be a good performance, which helped me conquer my fears and turned me into a new person.
