Everybody has a brain, but not many people know how the
brain works. Some people believe that the brain is like the hard
disk of a computer. We use it to store files-pictures,language
words, texts, sounds)and so on.Others compare the brain to a
huge cupboard with lots of shelves and boxes in it.We put
information into these boxes and hope to find it again later.
The brain is not a computer disk, and it
isn't a cupboard,either.Look at the picture
here.It looks a bit like weeds(杂草)ina
garden,doesn't it?The picture actually shows a child's neocortex(
脑皮层)a part of the brain that controls sight and hearing. You
can guess what happens-more "weeds"grow as the child gets older.
Scientists call these neuronal networks(神经元网络).The networks
grow around our neurons. What makes them grow?Learning!
"Learning makes the brain change,"says Professor James Zull from
Case Western University in Cleveland,Ohio, the USA."Without
learning, nothing changes in the brain. For every new word you learn
in your English lesson, every problem you solve in math, every new
song you learn to sing,a neuronal network grows in your brain and
the brain changes.”
The more neuronal networks we have, the better we can think
and the better we remember. You may wonder if there is anything you
can do to make the networks in your brain grow better.Professor Zull
says,"Yes,there is.He says that brain change is the strongest when
you are interested in and like what you are learning, when you are in
control of what you learn and when you get challenging tasks that
make you think hard.Understanding a challenging task makes you
feel good and develops your brain.
()21.What's the main idea of the first paragraph?
A.The brain-a fantastic computer.
B.How to make your brain stronger.
C.What people believe about the brain.
)22.What does the underlined word "them"refer to?

A.We remember better when things are easy.
B.Learning makes our neuronal networks grow.
C.Seeing a challenging task develops our brains.
()24.What's the best title for the passage?
A.Learning Makes the Brain Change
B.Meeting Life's Challenges
C.Never Too Late to Learn

Animal behavior is an interesting and attractive
study.Scientists research the ways animals use to look
for food. They study how animals protect themselves
from their predators, and which animals kill other
animals for food. All of this helps us understand how useful animals
can be.
Each country or culture raises some animals for food.In the
United States, people mainly eat meat from cows and chickens. In
other countries, people might raise sheep or buffalo for meat.
These differences come in part from the weather and other
environmental conditions.People around the world eat all kinds
of fish and shellfish from oceans and rivers.
In West Africa, animals provide humans with more than
food. They have been helping people do daily work for thousands
of years.Horses, oxen, and other work animals pull heavy things.
Elephants, camels, and other animals carry people and things
from place to place.Carrier pigeons (have been used to
send messages.
People also receive health benefits(利益)from animals..For
example, dogs and cats can help calm people down. This is helpful for
people fighting illnesses.Animals can also reduce stress, helping people to
draw their attention to learning new information, such as reading. When
people are walking their dogs or horses,it encourages exercise.
Animals and humans share space on the earth,so keeping a
healthy relationship with animals around us is in our best interests.
()25.What does the underlined word "predators"in Paragraph 1
probably mean?
A.Neighbors.B.Friends.
C.Enemies.
)26.What can we know from the passage?
A.People around the world eat all kinds of fish.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从框内6个选项中选出能分别填入5个小题空
白处的最佳选项。
A lot of animals travel from one place to another. We call
this migration(迁徙).
In Africa,large animals,like elephants and zebras,migrate
to find food and water. They usually follow the same ways every
year.29.
They are usually birds that eat insects. They
spend the summer in northern Europe, because there are lots of
insects there. In winter there aren't any insects,so the birds fly
south to southern Europe and Africa.
30.
In North America, millions of monarch butterflies fly
south to spend the winter in Mexico,California and Florida, where
it's warmer. They travel 50-65 km each day and they travel about
1,125km.
Some fish migrate to breed.Salmon()can swim over
20,000 km in their life. They are born in rivers in Ireland,
Scotland and other places in northern Europe. The young fish
swim down the river to the sea and into the Atlantic Ocean.
31.
Then they return to the river where they were born.
They lay their eggs in the river and then they usually die.Salmon
do this, because their eggs are safer in the river.32.
Arctic terns(北极燕鸥)travel the furthest when they
migrate. They spend the summer in the Arctic, but when winter
comes they fly to the Antarctic, because it's summer there.
33.
In one year these small birds travel 36,000 km from
one end of the earth to the other and back again.Nobody knows
how they do it.
A.Some insects migrate,too.
B.Other fish can't eat them.
C.Different kinds of animals live on the earth.
D.They live in the ocean until they are adults.
E.Next year they fly back to the Arctic again.
F.A lot of birds migrate to find food and better weather, too.
第三节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容填空和回答问题。(34至37题每题
答案不超过3个单词,38题须用完整句子回答。)
Every student can manage time to get more
knowledge at school. However, how can you manage
24h
your time more efficiently(有效地)to study well?
Well, you can arrange()for time each day to read over
notes. You needn't study each of your subjects every day,but
studying something every day will help you study better.Take
notes as you study,so you can use those notes to save your study
time later.
Even though studying is important,it doesn't need to control
your time.After-school activities are an important part of school
life for many students. The efforts to study don't mean you have
to give up these activities.Instead, you need to find your personal
balance between study time and extra activities. For example,if
you play on the baseball team and work on the school paper, you
may find that two activities are too much, and that you don't
have enough time to study and take part in these activities. If this
is the case, you need to prioritize(优先考虑)and choose just one
activity.Therefore,you'll have time to study.
As you get closer to graduation,it becomes easier to think
that class attendance isn't important, especially later in college.
Other activities, such as hanging out with friends and even
working, can seem more important. However, class time is the
time when you can ask questions and learn more about the
material.Attending your classes regularly(经常地)makes you
get more information and helps you get better grades.
Any spare time you have during the day can be used for
studying. For example,if you take a bus,use that time to read over
your notes,or read your text.Any time in which you would just sit
and wait is a good time to work on schoolwork,so you can master
what you have learnt. However, you need to learn to balance
schoolwork and relaxation time,so you don't burn out.
34.The passage mainly talks about how to
to study
well.
35.From Paragraph 2,we can know that
while
studying can help us save our study time.
36.The writer tells us that we should balance
and
after-school activities in Paragraph 3.
37.For class attendance,we shouldn't
from classes
because of other activities.
38.How can we manage our spare time?Give one example.
