Unit 1 Honesty and responsibility Extended reading & Project Extended reading By the end of this section, you are going to: recognize the importance and rewards of taking responsibility; explain the relationship between taking personal responsibility and taking social responsibility; describe the consequences of not taking responsibility with examples; understand the meaning of becoming an adult. Lead-in 1. What ceremony do you attend when you turn 18? What is the importance of it? When I turn 18, I attend a coming-of-age ceremony, which marks my entry into adulthood. 2. How do you feel about becoming an adult in the near future? I feel excited because as an adult, I will be independent and can make my own decisions. I feel anxious because I am not sure whether I can bear the responsibility of being an adult or live up to my parents’ expectations. Before reading Work in pairs and discuss the meaning of the picture in the title. This picture demonstrates a scene where a paper plane is taking off, and the paper plane has a shadow that is a real airplane. I think this picture is a metaphor for us students and our journeys ahead. We are like paper planes, and we will soon be ready to take off and become real airplanes which can fly higher and further towards our future. While reading 1. Read the speech transcript and fill in the following mind map. Introduction Conclusion The opening of the speech The importance of responsibility Taking responsibility for oneself While reading 2. Read paragraph 3 and answer the following question. What situation would a person who has no sense of responsibility face? A person who has no sense of responsibility is at the mercy of their own careless and thoughtless behaviour. At school, you have gradually understood the importance of a well-developed sense of responsibility. You accept that you are responsible for your successes and your failures. Hopefully, you have learnt to treat responsibility not as a weight that burdens you, but rather as a foundation which will support your future development. A ship without an anchor is at the mercy of the waves and winds; likewise, a person who has no sense of responsibility is at the mercy of their own careless and thoughtless behaviour. ... As you go through your daily life, you will encounter many difficult situations where things may go wrong. Instead of being quick to blame others, analyse the problem, and if it is indeed your own fault, be ready to admit your mistake and then correct it. This way, you practise the virtue of courage. Always give your best in whatever you set out to do, however difficult that might be. This way, you practise the virtue of determination. Be honest by saying what you mean and by meaning what you say. This way, you practise the virtue of integrity. Taking responsibility in all aspects of your everyday life, therefore, will help build a strong character. While reading 3. Read paragraph 4 and fill in the following table. The virtue of courage The virtue of determination The virtue of integrity Analyse the problem and be ready to admit your mistake and then correct it. Always give your best in whatever you set out to do, however difficult that might be. Be honest by saying what you mean and by meaning what you say. While reading 4. Read paragraph 5 and answer the following questions. (1) Why does assuming responsibility for your actions also benefit society? Because society is an organic whole, and as social beings, we have a responsibility to make a contribution. Apart from personal development, assuming responsibility for your actions is also important for the betterment of society. Society is an organic whole, and as social beings, we have a responsibility to make a contribution. You may have heard the story of a small boy who tried to save starfish left on the beach after a storm, by throwing them back into the sea. ... While reading 4. Read paragraph 5 and answer the following questions. (2) What little things can you do to make a difference? For example, picking up garbage around your neighbourhood contributes to a cleaner environment. Reporting a speeding car helps ensure road safety. Being energy-efficient leads to savings of our precious natural resources. Doing volunteer work at a local nursing home brings love and warmth to the elderly. ... Similarly, the little things you do can make a difference! For example, picking up garbage around your neighbourhood contributes to a cleaner environment. Reporting a speeding car helps ensure road safety. Being energy-efficient leads to savings of our precious natural resources. Doing volunteer work at a local nursing home brings love and warmth to the elderly. ... After reading 1. Write a summary of the speech transcript. Use the following ideas to help you. Having a well-developed sense of responsibility means accepting responsibility for the successes and failures in life and viewing responsibility not as a burden but as a foundation that is necessary for future self-development. Without the sense of responsibility, one’s behaviour would be careless and thoughtless. Taking responsibility in all aspects of one’s daily life, however, helps build a strong character, which embodies the virtues of courage, determination and integrity. Virtue is its own reward. Furthermore, taking responsibility helps make society better. Little things can make a difference. It is through actions that others are inspired to join in. The importance of taking responsibility Taking responsibility for yourself and its rewards Taking responsibility for society and its rewards After reading 2. What is the relationship between taking responsibility for yourself and taking responsibility for society? Society is an organic whole that is made up of individuals. We, as individuals, inevitably have a give-and-take relationship with society as a whole. In this relationship, our role is for every one of us to take responsibility for our own actions—to avoid careless and thoughtless behaviour. In doing so, our society will become better and in turn benefit every individual. When we give, we also receive, and vice versa. After reading 3. What are the consequences of not taking responsibility? Support your ideas with examples. Acting irresponsibly has serious consequences. On a large scale, mankind’s excessive need for production and consumption of goods can be linked to the environmental problems we are facing today: climate change, depletion of natural resources and extinction of wildlife species. On a small scale, not taking responsibility may lead to relationship problems among people. At school or work, individuals may not be considered reliable enough to be team players or be placed in leadership roles. Irresponsibility clearly has a butterfly effect not only on people who are being irresponsible, but also on those around them. Project Making a scrapbook about honesty and responsibility By the end of this section, you are going to: collect and sort information about a chosen aspect related to honesty and responsibility; make a scrapbook page through cooperation and exploration; present the scrapbook page to the whole class; evaluate and comment on each other’s work. Discussion 1. Discuss the characters in this unit and how they practise honesty and responsibility. Then fill in the following table. She told a white lie to protect her grandma’s feelings. Discussion 2. Work in groups of four and discuss the following questions. (1) What aspects can be included in a scrapbook about honesty and responsibility? We can include idioms, quotes, songs, stories, poems or films in the scrapbook. (2) What aspect would your group like to choose? Why? We would like to choose the English song We Are the World. It is a famous song about taking responsibility to change the environment that vulnerable people around the world are living in. We think it is still meaningful after all these years. Making a scrapbook Analyse the example below. Then make your scrapbook. A quote The interpretation of the quote what this quote means the moral values behind the quote ... Background picture Making your scrapbook Improve your pages and put all the parts together to complete the scrapbook. $$
