In Kibaha, Tanzania, near the capital Dares Salaam, architects are set to build a new village with “earth printing”. Funded by charity One Heart, Hope Village has been designed by architecture firms Hassell and ClarkeHopkinsClarke to help and house children from across the country who have experienced hardship or unsafe home environments.
The village will offer schooling for up to 480 children, as well as accommodation, childcare and skills training for 3-to 18-year-old girls. The landmark building for Hope Village is its community center, a 3D-printed design that will serve as a school hall and cafeteria during the week and open to the wider community for events at weekends.
“We wanted to make sure that we’re able to create walls that could circulate air in the building, but at the same time also bring in light,” said Xavier De Kestelier, Hassell’s head of design and innovation, “and turning to 3D printing allowed for an open, ‘porous’ (多孔的) wall design.”
The earth suitable for printing typically contains 15% to 30% clay, giving it natural bonding characteristics. The walls will not be load-bearing, as a metal structure will support the roof that covers the walls and protects them from the elements. The roof will be made from short lengths of locally sourced wood, connected in an interlocking design on the ground before being raised up and covering the frame like a fabric tent and finished with sheet metal, explained De Kestelier.
“The plan is not just to use technology but to bring technology to the site in Tanzania and leave it there,” said De Kestelier. As part of the project’s commitment to community outreach and skills training, the constructors will teach locals how to use the printer so the community can construct further buildings in the future.
24. What is Hope Village in Kibaha aimed at?
A. Engaging in charity activities.
B. Restoring unsafe environments.
C. Experimenting with earth printing.
D. Providing shelter for disadvantaged children.
25. What do we know about the community center?
A. Its walls bear heavy weight. B. It offers children schooling.
C. It’s a 3D-printed building. D. It opens to all during weekdays.
26. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. Environmental benefits of clay. B. Materials and design of the building
C. 3D printing for wall construction. D. Techniques in modern architecture.
27. What is the principle of the project?
A. Teach a man to fish. B. Innovation is the key to growth.
C. A good beginning is half done. D. Share knowledge, share success.

A 2024 UNESCO report reveals teenagers now spend 40% of their social interaction time on short-video platforms like TikTok, fundamentally redefining friendship norms. While these platforms provide instant connectivity, psychologists warn of the risk of weakening real-world relationships.
Dr. Emma Lopez, a social neuroscientist at Cambridge, explains, “Getting likes on videos causes dopamine (多巴胺) levels to increase, a physical change similar to eating sweets. However, just as too much sugar harms health, relying only on online interactions can weaken real friendships.” Her research shows that 25% of teens who receive frequent online praise later feel lonelier than those with balanced online-offline social lives. These teens also demonstrate reduced persistence in resolving offline conflicts.
The way teens communicate is also shifting. 60% of adolescents now favor exchanging 15-second video clips over ongoing conversations. Kenji Yamamoto, Tokyo University sociologist, describes this as “sending postcards instead of letters” — entertaining yet emotionally shallow. Research confirms such brief exchanges contain 50% fewer expressions of care than traditional text messages. “We face a paradox here: more communication, less depth,” he notes.
To counteract this constant disturbance, some educators suggest carrying out “digital minimalism” — a philosophy that encourages intentionally reducing screen time. However, students often struggle with persistent efforts in practicing such self-discipline. “At first, students may be excited enough to shut down their social media accounts for a short time. However, if they cannot keep making efforts consistently, most will return to their old habits in the end. This repeated pattern of ‘trying to resist but failing again’ leaves them feeling even more discouraged.” says tech ethicist Dr. Maria Gonzalez.
Educational experts also propose other balanced approaches. Schools worldwide are testing solutions. In Sweden, classrooms adopting “digital balance” strategies report 31% better student focus. Meanwhile, UCLA’s “Analog Fridays” initiative, where classrooms ban digital devices every Friday and encourage face-to-face interactions, has reduced student anxiety levels by 19%. As Dr. Gonzalez concludes, “The challenge isn’t rejecting technology, but rebuilding spaces for undivided human attention.”
28. What is psychologists’ concern on teenagers using short-video platforms?
A. It can harm their mental health.
B. It can damage their off-line relationships.
C. It can affect their academic performance.
D. It can weaken their conflict-solving abilities.
29. Why does Kenji Yamamoto describe exchanging video clips as “sending postcards”?
A. Both are favored by teenagers.
B. Both bring great joy to receivers.
C. Both are enjoyable but lack depth.
D. Both show more care than text messages.
30. What does the underlined word “counteract” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Create. B. Increase. C. Prevent. D. Ignore.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Technology rejection is the ultimate solution.
B. Schools should completely ban digital devices.
C. Resisting digital disturbance is impossible for students.
D. Balancing digital and real-world interactions is achievable.

Ask any marathon runner a week before their race what they are doing, and they’ll almost certainly be refreshing the weather app on their phone. That’s because it can be disastrous if their hard-earned performance is affected by uncontrollable factors like the weather. Now, these athletes might have another factor to worry about: air quality.
A new study published in Sports Medicine last December found a correlation between air pollution and slower marathon finishing times. The results suggest that even modest amounts of air pollution can impact athletic performance. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in particular has long been linked to various health issues, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and lung conditions. Previous research has shown that exercising during times of poor air quality is harmful to health, but little is known about the effects this type of air pollution can have on performance in endurance events such as marathons, which require athletes to be outside exercising and breathing heavily for hours at a time.
To better understand this, researchers used a machine-learning model to estimate how much fine particulate matter was in the air at every mile marker on the course of nine marathons located across the U.S. between 2003 and 2019. Using this model—rather than relying on monitoring stations, which can often be miles away from a marathon course—allowed the researchers to more precisely estimate what the air quality was like throughout each course. They then compared these data with corresponding finishing times for the marathon events from more than 1.5 million finish times for male runners and slightly more than a million finish times for female runners, adjusting for other weather factors that could influence times, such as high heat or high humidity.
The results showed that an increase of just one microgram per cubic meter in PM2.5 levels correlated with a 32-second-slower finishing time for male marathoners and a 25-second-slower finishing time for female ones. Elvira Fleury, lead author of the study, says that marathoners should think of air pollution in a similar way to other weather conditions, such as heat and humidity, on race day. A fundamental next step for research, Fleury says, would be to understand what is going on in the body to cause worse performances.
32. What is the purpose of mentioning marathon runners in para.1?
A. To show the importance of weather.
B. To introduce air quality as a concern.
C. To emphasize preparations for marathons.
D To describe routines of marathon runners.
33. What does the new study focus on?
A. Accurate measurement of air quality.
B. Health risks of air pollution for runners.
C. Link between weather and athletic performance.
D. Effect of air pollution on marathoners’ performance.
34. What led to the findings of the study?
A. Precise data comparison. B. Weather factor adjustments.
C. Machine-learning estimates. D. Data from monitoring stations.
35. What does Fleury suggest for future research?
A. Considering air quality and weather equally.
B. Developing effective corresponding strategies.
C. Investigating individual sensitivity differences.
D Exploring internal changes causing slower speed.

Just a few degrees’ difference can turn a dull rainy day into an almost magical scene full of snow. “It’s more glorious and beautiful than everything else” in weather, says Alan Stewart, a weather and climate psychologist at the University of Georgia. ___36___ But there are some powerful scientific reasons why many people are so attracted by gently falling snowflakes.
For some people in northern America, they may grow up intentionally turning pajamas (睡衣) inside out and backward in hopes of calling forth some snowflakes. ___37___ Those joyful days when sitting in school turned into one that was instead filled with snowball fights. But there are also plenty of reasons snow can appeal to people without that fond memory of something past. ___38___ For example, says writer Kari Leibowitz, freshly fallen snow is loose enough to absorb sound well, making the world quieter.
___39___ “There’s something about the clean, fresh, white snow that is very pleasing,” says Leibowitz, who has written a book about mental health in winter. One aspect of that visual appeal, she adds, is the way snow reflects light in the darker months. “A lot of people really struggle with winter darkness as much as they struggle with the cold,” she says. “And so the brightening effect of the snow, I think, is really powerful.”
Snow changes the very shape of the world people see around them. ___40___ Things that you look at every day suddenly can appear very different. Leibowitze says, “I think the snow and the ice give us things to engage with in sensory ways that can be very playful and very childlike.”
A. Of course, snow has its haters.
B. It reminds us of the beauty of nature.
C. Snow reflects brightness and coldness in winter.
D. And it plays even more strongly on our sense of sight.
E. Snow can be a powerful reminder of childhood snow days.
F. A fresh blanket of it hides and yet reveals our surroundings.
G. Snow quite literally transforms our sound experience of the world.

Two tickets to the big Saturday basketball game lay in Dad’s outstretched hand. Three pairs of eyes, full of expectation, were fixed on them. Marcus, the oldest, voiced the question running through everyone’s mind, “Only two tickets? But, Dad, which of us gets to go with you?” Dad scratched his head and said, “I guess I’ll have to figure out a fair way of choosing between the three of you by tomorrow morning. I’ll have to decide who deserves it most.”
The next morning, Marcus hurried into the kitchen. “Where’s Dad?” he asked as he reached for a glass of milk. “He and Mom went to pick up some books from the library,” Caleb, our youngest brother, replied, digging into his corn. “And he said we should all get started on our Saturday household chores (家务) as soon as we finish breakfast,” I added. “Chores! He’s got to be kidding,” Marcus said, putting down his glass. “How can we concentrate on chores when the big game is only eleven hours away?”
“I’m going for the morning newspaper” Marcus announced. “There’s probably a preview of tonight’s game in the sports section.” “Wait for me!” Caleb added and dashed after his brother. The back door closed with a bang as the two boys hurried down the driveway. I looked at the breakfast table: tiny milk spots, bits of corn, and a small mass of blueberry jam. “It looks like Saturday morning chores start right here,” I thought to myself as I pushed my chair away from the table.
A few minutes later, as I was doing the chores, I heard the basketball bouncing off the driveway. I glanced out of the kitchen window and saw Marcus practicing shooting while Caleb cheered him on. Frustrated, I knocked on the window three times. “Okay, Jill, we’re coming in to help. Just one more minute,” Marcus said. “Yeah, just one more minute,” Caleb repeated. I carried the rubbish bag out to the dustbin. As I opened the cover, a flash of white caught my attention. A white envelope was taped to the inside of it.

【原文】M: Welcome to Meet the Businessman, Elena Green. Firstly, could you tell our listeners a bit about why you decided to start your own business?
W: Absolutely, thank you for having me. After working in the software industry for 10 years, I realized there was a gap in the market. That was when the idea for my business really took shape.
M: What did you do to get things off the ground?
W: First, I focused on market research to understand my target customers and competitors. Next, I wrote a business plan outlining my goals, strategies, and financial situations. Finally, I registered the company.
M: Sounds like a lot of work. What was the biggest challenge you faced in the early stages?
W: Securing early-stage startup funding. A steady cash flow is essential when your business first opens. You’ll need this to keep your company competitive and help produce your products. My parents supported me enormously during that time.
M: That makes sense! Thanks for sharing your experiences.

【原文】Good evening, I’m Penny Caldwell. I’m honored to receive this award — the Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement. What I have learned in publishing is to manage my expectations but keep dreaming, work hard, and be adaptable. That came to me from Doug Creighton, the founding publisher of the Toronto Sun. When I was fresh out of university, Doug suggested that I should find a place in a small newspaper where I could learn to do everything. So I went home and applied to every community newspaper across Canada, and I got a job as a sports reporter and columnist at the Whitby News Advertiser. The newspaper’s editor and senior reporters taught me a lot. Finally, I would like to end with a thank you to Cottage Life, where I am currently employed, and particularly to AI Zikovitz, my friend and long-time boss, who every day teaches me something new about hard work, being adaptable, and chasing my dreams.

The earth suitable for printing typically contains 15% to 30% clay giving it natural bonding characteristics.

【26题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“The earth suitable for printing typically contains 15% to 30% clay, giving it natural bonding characteristics.

【答案】28. B 29. C 30. C 31. D

细节理解题。根据第一段“A 2024 UNESCO report reveals teenagers now spend 40% of their social interaction time on short-video platforms like TikTok, fundamentally redefining friendship norms. While these platforms provide instant connectivity, psychologists warn of the risk of weakening real-world relationships. (一份2024年联合国教科文组织的报告显示,如今青少年将40%的社交互动时间花在了抖音等短视频平台上,这从根本上重新定义了友谊规范。虽然这些平台提供了即时连接,但心理学家警告称,这存在削弱现实世界中人际关系的风险。)”可知,心理学家对青少年使用短视频平台的担忧是这会损害他们的线下关系。故选B。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Kenji Yamamoto, Tokyo University sociologist, describes this as ‘sending postcards instead of letters’—entertaining yet emotionally shallow. (东京大学社会学家山本健二将其描述为“寄明信片而不是写信”——有趣但情感浅薄。)”可知,山本健二将交换视频片段描述为“寄明信片”是因为两者都很有趣但缺乏深度。故选C。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中“To counteract this constant disturbance, some educators suggest carrying out ‘digital minimalism’—a philosophy that encourages intentionally reducing screen time. (为了counteract这种持续的干扰,一些教育工作者建议实行“数字极简主义”——一种鼓励有意减少屏幕时间的理念。)”可知,为了“抵制,防止”这种持续的干扰,一些教育工作者提出了“数字极简主义”,所以counteract在此处意为“抵制,防止”。故选C。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Educational experts also propose other balanced approaches. Schools worldwide are testing solutions. In Sweden, classrooms adopting “digital balance” strategies report 31% better student focus. Meanwhile, UCLA’s “Analog Fridays” initiative, where classrooms ban digital devices every Friday and encourage face-to-face interactions, has reduced student anxiety levels by 19%. As Dr. Gonzalez concludes, “The challenge isn’t rejecting technology, but rebuilding spaces for undivided human attention.”

D. To describe routines of marathon runners.
D. Exploring internal changes causing slower speed.
【答案】32. B 33. D 34. A 35. D

【答案】36. A 37. E 38. G 39. D 40. F

【答案】Possible Version 1:
Dear Alex,
I was delighted to receive your letter exploring Chinese wisdom. The proverb “jade uncut won’t become a treasure” carries profound meaning, which indicates that natural talents require cultivation through persistent effort.
This proverb really speaks to me. As a piano learner for 10 years, I initially hated repetitive scales practice. However, just like jade-polishing, persistent drilling gradually refined my skills and shaped my perseverance. Now I understand that natural talent alone can’t replace deliberate effort.
Perhaps we’re all unpolished jade in different stages. Keep exploring Chinese culture — you’re already carving your own brilliance! Let me know if you’d like further discussion!
Yours,
Li Hua
Possible Version 2

This wisdom applies profoundly to learning. Firstly, embrace challenges as carving tools. A positive attitude towards difficulties may support you till the end. Secondly, welcome constructive criticism which will help shape your growth. Lastly, maintain regular practice. Daily English writing, though demanding, gradually improves your expression skills.
Perhaps we’re all unpolished jade in different stages. Let me know if you’d like further discussion!

“I’m going for the morning newspaper,” Marcus announced.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
(2) 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I opened the envelope and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

I turned in their direction and held up the envelope.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
I opened the envelope and pulled out a folded piece of paper. “To the one who deserves to go,” it read, and inside was a ticket to the basketball game! “Unbelievable,” I thought. “I’m the one that gets to go!” Then I remembered Dad’s comment the night before: “I’ll have to decide who deserves it most.” I smiled. By then, Marcus and Caleb had worn themselves out and dragged toward the back door. “Come on, Jill. Let’s get started on our chores if we want to get that ticket to the game,” Marcus yelled.
I turned in their direction and held up the envelope. “It might be a little too late for that.” I said with a mysterious grin. Marcus and Caleb looked at each other, with question marks in their eyes, as Mom and Dad’s car pulled into the driveway. That evening turned out to be as special as I’d imagined: two seats at Center Court, with Dad and me cheering our team to victory. It was a long-remembered lesson in responsibility from a dad who let his kids make their own choices and earn their own rewards.
