But I want you to concentrate on your own speed. Don’t go too fast. Let the others race ahead and become tired, because you will catch them soon enough.
After the first six miles, you will enter the water to swim for one mile. Since it is a lake, the water will be really cold. But don’t forget your training. Focus on your breathing and you will be fine.
Once you reach the other side, this is where you can win the race. It is really important that you find your shoes quickly. Once you do, jump on your bike and speed ahead. Cycling is what you are best at, so don’t hang around. Hopefully, if you’ve had a successful run and swim, you won’t be too far behind the leaders. Remember, it’ll be ten miles on your bike and then you’ll reach the finish line.
The last thing I want to say is good luck. I hope you win tomorrow!

Are you dreaming of overcoming Mount Kilimanjaro, but not sure which route to take? Here’s an overview of four Kilimanjaro routes for you.
Marangu Route
The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola Route”, is distinguished by its cottage accommodations and is a popular choice for climbers aiming to reach the top of Kilimanjaro.
Providing a more comfortable option compared to camping, these simple cottages offer basic facilities and can be a welcoming sight after a day of challenging hiking.
Machame Route
The Machame Route, often referred to as the “Whiskey Route”, is famous for its splendid landscapes and challenging summit (顶峰) night that tests climbers’determination and tolerance.
The night before the summit push, is a laborious test, characterized by sharp, rocky terrain (地形) and freezing temperatures, where climbers rely on their mental strength and physical preparedness to overcome the final barriers to Uhuru Peak.
Lemosho Route
The Lemosho Route offers breathtaking scenic views and owns one of the highest summit success rates among the Kilimanjaro routes, making it a favorite among climbers.
What sets the Lemosho Route apart is its gradual ascent (上升) profile, allowing climbers to accustom effectively and increase their chances of reaching the summit successfully.
Rongai Route
The Rongai Rout e provides a quiet hiking experience, allowing climbers to adapt gradually while impressing themselves with the untouched wilderness of Kilimanjaro’s northern side.
Adaptation becomes more manageable due to the route’s gentle ascent, allowing climbers to adjust to the increasing height comfortably. The unique advantage of this path is its relatively lower traffic, providing a peaceful experience in harmony with nature’s patterns.
21. What makes Marangu Route special?
A. The accommodations. B. The free Coca-Cola.
C. The camping sight. D. The challenging hiking.
22. What is most required when you choose Machame Route?
A. Climbing equipment. B. Help of Whiskey.

Sign language is the main way deaf people communicate. Since they can’t hear, talking to people can be tough. Fortunately, sign language interpreters step in to bridge this gap.
Hao Shuxin, 24, sees sign language as her first language, as her parents are deaf. “I pick up sign language before I could even talk,” she recalled. From a young age, Hao has been helping her parents and other deaf individuals communicate. In 2018, she became a sign language interpreter at a law company in Chongqing, assisting deaf clients in legal matters.
Since sign language has a smaller vocabulary, Hao often encounters complex legal terms that have no direct match. In such cases, she patiently breaks down the meaning for deaf people. There are also grammatical differences between Chinese and sign language. “For example, the phrase’ put out a fire’ is signed as’ a fire put out’ in sign language, as deaf people describe what they see first,” Hao explained.
Besides hand gestures, facial expressions and mouth movements are essential components of sign language. They work together to accurately communicate messages and prevent misunderstandings. To ensure clarity in legal interpretations, Hao sometimes repeats a sentence two or three times for deaf individual. “I feel stressed at work because I worry about being misunderstood,” she admitted.
Part of Hao’s anxiety comes from the fact that sign language has regional “dialects”. The same word can be expressed with different hand gestures depending on where a deaf person is from. “For example, people in Inner Mongolia and Chongqing use different gestures for the word’ true’,” Hao explained. She believes that patience and compassion(同情) are essential to her work. “My parents are deaf, so I understand the challenges faced by the deaf community. I want to do everything I can to help them,” Hao said.
24. What can be learned about Hao Shuxin?
A. She wants to learn more sign language dialects.
B. She hopes to be a successful lawyer in Chongqing.
C. She learned sign language when she was very small.
D. She communicates with others mainly by sign language.
25. What can we infer from the third paragraph?
A. The vocabulary of sign language is very large.
B. Sign language and Chinese have many similarities.
C. It is not easy to express legal terms in sign language.
D. It is hard for deaf people to understand the sign language.
26. What does the underlined word “clarity” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Clearness. B. Awareness. C. Kindness. D. Gentleness.
27. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Sign language is the first language of the deaf.
B. A sign language interpreter guards the silent world.
C. Sign language plays an important role in the legal field.
D. A sign language interpreter significantly changes other people’s life.
【答案】24. C 25. C 26. A 27. B

When it comes to reading, people have different preferences. Some people will choose paper books because they’re easy to borrow and share. Others will go for e-readers, perhaps on a phone, because they’re convenient. But which is the more environment-friendly choice?
Digital reading(数字阅读)is on the rise, now making up about 15% of the total US book market. However, traditional print publishing is still by far the most popular type — and it comes with a high carbon footprint(碳足迹). According to a 2023 report from Words Rated, print book publishing is the third biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions, and 32 million trees are cut down each year in the US to make paper for books. Then there’s the problem of printing and transport, not to mention the many unsold books that are destroyed.
Digital reading seems to have a great advantage over print because it is paperless, so it saves trees and transport. Moreover, technology companies that make e-readers, such as Amazon, offer recycling programs for old devices(设备). But digital devices also come with a large carbon footprint, mainly at the production stage. Their cases are made from plastic that comes from fossil fuels, and the minerals in their batteries require a lot of resources to be mined.
So back to the earlier question: which way of reading is more environmentally friendly? “It’s not cut and dried,” said Mike Berners-Lee, a professor at Lancaster Environment Centre in the United Kingdom. “If you buy an e-reader and you read lots of books on it, then it’s the lowest carbon thing to do. But if you buy it, read a couple of books, and find that you prefer paper books, then it’s the worst of all worlds.” Yet, Berners-Lee said that reading is still, relatively speaking, an environmental-friendly activity.
28. What does the report show?
A. Printed books have a poor sales record in the US.
B. Print publishing is not friendly to the environment.
C. Digital reading is more popular than paper reading.
D. Printing books costs more than producing e-readers.
29. Which aspect of digital devices has the largest impact on the environment?
A. Its transportation B. Its waste management.
C. Its production process. D. Its recycling programs.
30. According to the text, it is better to choose digital reading if you______.
A. read a lot B. hardly take notes
C. enjoy reading at night D. only read books out of need
31. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Why Should We Choose Digital Reading?
B. How Does Print Publishing Affect the Environment?
C. Will Traditional Print Reading Disappear in the Future?
D. Which is Better for the Environment, Paper Books or E-readers?
【答案】28. B 29. C 30. A 31. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇议论文,文章对比了纸质书籍和电子阅读器在环境保护方面的优劣,指出阅读方式的选择对环境的影响并非一成不变,取决于个人的阅读习惯。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“According to a 2023 report from Words Rated, print book publishing is the third biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions, and 32 million trees are cut down each year in the US to make paper for books.(根据Words Rated 2023年的报告,纸质书出版是第三大温室气体排放源,美国每年有3200万棵树被砍伐用于制作书籍纸张)”可知,该报告指出纸质书出版对环境不友好。故选B。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“:But digital devices also come with a large carbon footprint, mainly at the production stage.(但数字设备也伴随着巨大的碳足迹,主要集中在生产阶段)”可知,数字设备对环境影响最大的是其生产过程。故选C。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“If you buy an e-reader and you read lots of books on it, then it’s the lowest carbon thing to do.(如果你买了一个电子阅读器并在上面阅读很多书,那么这是最低碳的做法)”可知,如果你经常阅读,选择电子阅读器是更环保的,因此选项A“读很多书”是正确的。故选A。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并根据文章第一段“When it comes to reading, people have different preferences. Some people will choose paper books because they’re easy to borrow and share. Others will go for e-readers, perhaps on a phone, because they’re convenient. But which is the more environment-friendly choice?(说到阅读,人们有不同的偏好。有些人会选择纸质书,因为它们很容易借阅和分享。还有一些人会选择电子阅读器,也许是在手机上,因为它们很方便。但哪个是更环保的选择?)”可知,文章围绕纸质书和电子书哪个更环保的问题展开论述,所以最适合的标题是“纸质书还是电子阅读器,哪个对环境更好”。故选D。
D
People are already paying more and more for food due to global warming — and rising temperatures will drive food prices a lot higher in the next decade. According to a study by the European Central Bank, by 2035, higher temperatures alone will be pushing up worldwide food prices by between 0.9% and 3.2% every single year.
To find out how this is affecting food prices, Maximilian Kotz at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and his colleagues examined data on the monthly prices and weather conditions in 121 countries between 1996 and 2021. By looking for associations between food prices and factors such as the average monthly temperature, temperature changes, and measures of drought and extreme rainfall, they found a strong link between the average temperature and the food prices a month or so later. In regions north of 40 degrees, like the latitude (纬度) of New York City and Beijing, warmer-than-average temperatures during winter led to falling food prices. But above-average temperatures increased food prices in summer and at all times in the rest of the world.
“The study didn’t look at why prices rose, but the likely explanation is that extreme heat is reducing yields,” Kotz says. “Crops may be drying out on the vine when they should be being harvested.” Factors such as extreme rainfall had less impact on food prices than average temperatures. This may be because flooding tends to be localized, while above-average temperatures can be very widespread.
Other studies have reached similar conclusions. Kotz’s team then went further by investigating how food prices could change based on average temperature rises in climate model prediction. In the worst situation, global food inflation (食品通胀) due to climate change goes over 4% per year by 2060. “We need to be aware of the fact that climate change brings huge new challenges for food security,” says Kotz. “Warming-fuelled extreme weather is increasingly affecting food production around the world. If farmers don’t adapt their practices to better cope with rising temperatures, the losses will become more serious.”
32. What does the study focus on?
A. The factors in the rising living costs.
B. The impact of climate change on food prices.
C. The effects of natural disasters on food production.
D. The comparison of food prices in different regions.
33. How did researchers reach their conclusions?
A. By analyzing a mass of data. B. By referring to previous studies.
C. By tracking some cities for years. D. By conducting a survey among farmers.
34. What is the main reason for the rising food prices according to Kotz?
A. Frequent rainfall. B. Extreme high temperature.
C. The increasing demand for crops. D. The restrictions of trade policies.
35. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. To investigate how food prices change. B. To predict the loss caused by the heat wave.
C. To urge farmers to adjust their practices. D. To clarify the situation of global food inflation.
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. B 35. C

C项“However, you can throw them away through effort. (然而,你可以通过努力摆脱它们)”能够承接上文,引出下文。故选C。
【40题详解】
根据本段的首句“Be honest with yourself when identifying the fear that holds you back.(在发现阻碍你前进的恐惧时,要诚实地面对自己)”可知,在确认阻碍你前行的恐惧时要诚实地面对自己;又根据“But if you handle it properly, you will benefit greatly.(但如果你处理得当,你会受益匪浅)”可知,如果能够合理掌控这种恐惧你会受益匪浅。identify与realize为同义词, handle与control为同义词;A 项“Realize and control your fears. Aunt Evie had a dollhouse. It had many toys there. Every Friday afternoon, I went to Aunt Evie’s home with my parents. The adults would sit around a table in the dining room, eating pie and talking, while I played in the dollhouse for hours.
Sometimes I would pick up these lovely toys and place them in different positions. It was really fun. One time I asked Aunt Evie where she got the toys so that I could buy some, too. To my disappointment, Aunt Evie said that most of them were specially handmade gifts from her friends and couldn’t be bought anywhere. One such toy was a little bear, which was my favorite. It was so beautiful that I wanted to own it badly. “If I take it, Aunt Evie may not notice it. ” I said to myself.
Therefore, on a Friday afternoon, I attempted to take the little bear away from Aunt Evie’s dollhouse. I had to wait until nobody was watching me, ‘and it took me hours to get the courage to put the little bear in my pocket. Once I got the little bear, I couldn’t wait to go home. I had to hide it somewhere at home, so that no one would know I took it. That night after I went home with my parents, I couldn’t go to sleep. “What a bad person I am! I stole something from my loved Aunt Evie.” I thought. When I woke up the next morning, I felt awful, but I couldn’t tell my parents, let alone return the little bear to Aunt Evie. I was embarrassed about my behavior. At some point, I started to hate the little bear and myself. And I knew if I didn’t do something, I wouldn’t get away from those bad feelings.

Seized with fright, I stood frozen to the spot, thinking Aunt Evie would hate me. Eventually, with my mom’s encouragement, I got up the courage to head for Aunt Evie’s home.
Paragraph 2:
My hand was shaking when I rang the doorbell of Aunt Evie’s house. She unlocked the door, smiled and looked as if she already knew everything. I presented her with the little bear and made my apologies. “I admire your courage to return the bear. I would like to give it to you as a gift for your honesty.

A To investigate how food prices change. B. To predict the loss caused by the heat wave.
C. To urge farmers to adjust their practices. D. To clarify the situation of global food inflation.

Therefore on a Friday afternoon, I attempted to take the little bear away from Aunt Evie’s dollhouse.
