Floods in Spain
On October 29, a large amount of rainfall hit Valencia of Spain and the surrounding towns were flooded. A total of 216 people died, half of whom were over the age of 70. As it moved across the southeastern states of the United States, including Georgia, Virginia, Tennessee and Alabama, it left behind a trail of destruction and caused severe flooding, taking away more than 230 people’s lives.

Deep in the Gobi Desert in Northwest China’s Gansu Province, remains of the Han Dynasty Great Wall stand firm. Two thousand years of sandstorms have not been enough to destroy it, nor is the heavy wind strong enough to prevent people from recalling the glory (光荣) of the ancient Silk Road. To keep this part of history alive, every possible way has been tried.
A dozen miles away from the remains of Yumen Pass, Chen Wanying’s voice breaks through the sound of the visitors’ footsteps. She reminds the visitors of the notice from a small house and watches over their behaviour, in case they accidentally or unknowingly damage some remains.
Chen and her husband Zhang Jianjun have been living on this land for more than ten years. They are under the control of the weather. Surface temperatures can reach nearly 60℃ during the hottest period of the year. They rely on solar power and a wireless network, and there’s no running water. The water from the well nearby is bearable for cooking, but they need to go elsewhere to get drinking water.
Yet, Zhang Jianjun says, one of the most difficult aspects of their job is to keep wild animals away from the wall in the dead of night. Oxen, particularly, like to use the wall to lighten itches (痒) brought by insects. The couple often have to drive these animals away several times a night, but they never feel discouraged.
It’s nearly time for Zhang Jianjun to retire from the job he’s been enthusiastic about. He says he wants to leave the site to his successors (继任者) undamaged and pass on the lessons he has learned to do the work well.
4. What can be inferred about the Han Dynasty Great Wall?
A. Natural forces have destroyed it. B. It is located in a mild climate area.
C. Action has been taken to keep it safe. D. Human activities are the biggest danger.
5. What is the biggest challenge the couple faces in their work?
A. Finding clean drinking water. B. Driving away wild animals at night.
C. Facing extreme heat during the day. D. Surviving without stable electricity.
6. What can be used to describe the couple?
A. Clever and friendly. B. Ambitious and helpful.
C. Determined and devoted. D. Responsible and thankful.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Living Conditions of the Gobi Desert.
B. Kind Couple Protecting Wild Animals.
C. Glorious Memory regarding Ancient Silk Road.
D. Protectors of the Han Dynasty Great Wall Ruins.

The mobile game Tower of Fantasy developed by the Beijing-based movie and gaming company Perfect World, became an overseas hit last year. It was the No.1 free Internet download app in more than 40 countries and regions and ranked (排名) among the top 10 bestsellers in more than 30 countries and regions.
Its content, characters and scenery are all related to Chinese stories. Such commercial success will bring more opportunities for game players worldwide to experience Chinese culture, says Xiao Hong, CEO of Perfect World. “It is important to learn how to use the Internet as a carrier to encourage experience exchanges at home and abroad and spread Chinese culture all over the world.” Xiao says.
William Brown, an American professor at Xiamen University, says the Internet has changed people’s lives, and its greatest potential lies in helping people bridge the gaps between people and countries. “However, the spread of misinformation has become a serious issue. Fake news can quickly go viral, influencing public opinion and causing confusion.” Brown says.
Many foreign students use convenient Internet communication tools to contact their family during their stay in China, and carry out academic (学术的) exchanges with scholars across the world. “The Internet not only provides an excellent platform (平台) for us to understand China, but also offers us more chances to tell the stories of international students in China to the rest of the world and the stories of Central Asia to China,” Bayram, a Turkmenian student, says. He also added that as the Internet continues to develop, China will undoubtedly become a key player and contribute to the shaping of an increasingly digital world.
8. What can we learn about the game Tower of Fantasy?
A. It is a paid app overseas. B. It is related to Chinese culture.
C. It tops the rank list worldwide. D. It is developed by a foreign company.
9. What does Xiao Hong stress?
A. The plan to make Chinese games popular overseas.
B. The need to develop more mobile games with Chinese elements.
C. The challenge of competing with other gaming companies globally.
D. The importance of promoting cultural exchanges through the Internet.
10. What does the underlined phrase “go viral” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Prove wrong. B. Spread quickly.
C. Remain unnoticed. D. Disappear gradually
11. What benefits does the Internet brings to foreign students in China?
A. It offers a platform to learn cultures and share stories.
B. It allows family members to communicate face to face.
C. It ensures China’s role in developing digital technology.
D. It serves as a tool for academic research and data collection.
D
Technically, the airship is filled with hot air: an aircraft made of a large balloon full of nearly weightless lifting gases. If it makes you think of old black-and-white pictures, you are right — airships were popular at the beginning of the 20th century before airplanes took over. Now they are making a comeback.
Though airship won’t reach the speeds of a jet plane (喷气式飞机), they are being talked about as forms of slow travel like ships and night trains, where the experience makes up for the speed. The large balloon could run on electric engines, making it a zero-carbon emitting (排放) form of air transport. “Also, what makes airships impressive is that they can remain in the air for a long period, and their ability to fly vertically (垂直地) up,” said leading aviation (航空) expert Thomas Thessen.
The world’s largest aircraft, the LTA Pathfinderl, is being tested in Silicon Valley. LTA, one of the airship producers, is ready to enter the aviation market. It believes that next-generation airships can reduce the carbon footprint by using the helium (氦气) inside the balloon to do the lifting, rather than a carbon-emitting jet engine. Their airship can be used for more efficient cargo (货物) transport from point to point rather than port to port, and the airship can support relief efforts by delivering supplies even if roads and ports are damaged.
French company Flying Whales is also currently developing airships for cargo use, aiming to reduce the environmental impact of cargo transport, while British firm HAV is focused on how a hybrid airship — using electric engines as well as helium — can unlock a zero-emission form of air travel.
While the new airship still has a long way to go to be a mass travel solution it all adds up to a change in the skies. Along with eco-friendly aviation fuel and electric planes, the new generation of airships is replacing our carbon-heavy situation of flying.
12. Why does the author mention old black-and-white pictures?
A. To show airships are outdated. B. To stress airships have a long history.
C To present pictures of different airships. D. To compare the looks of airships and airplanes.
13. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about airships?
A. Their various forms. B. Their complex design.
C. Their primary purpose. D. Their major advantages.
14. What’s the function of the helium inside the balloon?
A Having the airships lifted. B. Making the airships fly faster.
C. Powering the airships’ engine. D. Reducing the weight of the airships.
15. What’s the author’s attitude to the new airships?
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Favorable. D. Worried.

第二节 阅读表达(满分15分)
阅读下面材料,根据文后各题目的具体要求完成阅读后的表达任务。
It’s strange, but I don’t really remember much about the hurricane (飓风) itself. It all happened so quickly. I was sitting in my room with my cat, Smartie, on my lap, when the roof just flew off. All of a sudden, there was sky where the roof had been. I was so frightened that I just froze.
Mom cried to get out quickly, but it was already too late by then. The rain was coming down so hard and so fast. Our street turned into a river in seconds. We were going nowhere.
At first, I was pleased we could stay at home, but soon it got really tough. Without a roof, staying inside was too dangerous. There was water everywhere, but we couldn’t drink any of it or we’d get really sick. We just had drinking water that was sent to us by helicopter, but it was never enough. It was August, so it was really, really hot and it smelled so bad everywhere!
I just spent the days watching the boats going up and down the street and looking out for Smartie. He had disappeared the moment the storm hit.
Living in the open air, we became breakfast, lunch and dinner for the mosquitoes. But Mom said that whatever happens, we should always try to see the good side of things. It was difficult to stay positive, though. We had lost our home and everything in it, including Smartie. All we had left were the clothes on our backs. But as Mom kept on reminding us that we were all together and safe, Mom’s words made us feel better. I remember us all lying under the mid night sky and looking up at the stars. Because there were no lights, we could see the Big Dipper, the Little Dipper and the Milky Way. It was amazing! Even though we had lost a lot, moments like those gave us hope for the future.
57. 根据文章内容,使用适当的词完成下列表格,每空一词。

While the new airship still has a long way to go to be a mass travel solution, it all adds up to a change in the skies. Along with eco-friendly aviation fuel and electric planes, the new generation of airships is replacing our carbon-heavy situation of flying.
12. Why does the author mention old black-and-white pictures?
A. To show airships are outdated. B. To stress airships have a long history.
C. To present pictures of different airships. D. To compare the looks of airships and airplanes.
13. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about airships?
A. Their various forms. B. Their complex design.
C. Their primary purpose. D. Their major advantages.
14. What’s the function of the helium inside the balloon?
A. Having the airships lifted. B. Making the airships fly faster.
C. Powering the airships’ engine. D. Reducing the weight of the airships.
15. What’s the author’s attitude to the new airships?
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Favorable. D. Worried.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. C

【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“It believes that next-generation airships can reduce the carbon footprint by using the helium (氦气) inside the balloon to do the lifting, rather than a carbon-emitting jet engine.(该公司认为,下一代飞艇可以通过使用气球内部的氦气来提升,而不是使用排放碳的喷气发动机,从而减少碳足迹。)”可知,气球里的氦气的作用是让飞艇上升。故选A。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“While the new airship still has a long way to go to be a mass travel solution, it all adds up to a change in the skies. Along with eco-friendly aviation fuel and electric planes, the new generation of airships is replacing our carbon-heavy situation of flying.(虽然新的飞艇要成为大众旅行解决方案还有很长的路要走,但这些都为天空的变化做出了贡献。除了环保航空燃料和电动飞机,新一代飞艇正在取代我们碳密集型的飞行状况。)”可推知,作者对新型飞艇持支持态度。故选C。

Then we were divided into three groups and each was assigned with different tasks, such as digging holes, placing the young trees and watering. During the activity, 20 new trees were planted.
