I was raised by my grandma in Arkansas, and she shaped the way I see the world. Grandma was always graceful (优雅的). She spoke softly and walked slowly with her hands behind her back. I copied her every move, and our neighbors called me her shadow (影子).
When I was thirteen, I moved to California to live with my mother. My new house was a world away from Grandma’s little home. In Arkansas, we listened to the news and fun radio shows. In California, my mother played loud music on a record player. The house was often filled with the laughter and loud talking of her guests. I clearly didn’t belong. I walked around my room like Grandma with my hands behind my back.
My mother watched me for two weeks. Then, one night, she sat me down.
“Maya,” she said, “I know you don’t like me because I am not like your grandma. I am not. But I am your mother and I am working hard to keep this roof (屋顶) over your head and to take care of you. When you go to school, the teacher will smile at you and you’ll smile back. Other students you don’t even know will smile and you’ll smile. If you can force a smile for strangers, do it for me. I’ll treasure it.”
She placed her hand on my cheek (脸颊) and smiled. “Come on, baby, smile for Mommy.”
She made a funny face and, against my wishes, I smiled. She kissed me and started to cry.
“That’s the first time I’ve seen you smile! It’s a beautiful smile. Mother’s beautiful daughter can smile!”
I had never been called beautiful before, and no one in my memory had ever called me a daughter.
That day, I learned just how powerful a smile can be.

Have you read Dune (《沙丘》) or watched the films? On the desert planet Arrakis, people wear specially designed suits. These suits collect sweat (汗液) and urine (尿液) and turn them into clean drinking water. This may sound like magic, but some water-stressed places in the world are already recycling wastewater in similar ways. Astronauts in space depend on recycled water, too.
But what about us? “We don’t live in space or on a desert planet,” you might say. “Why would we ever need to turn our sweat and urine into drinking water?” Well, we might not start by recycling wastewater for drinking, but we can recycle it for other uses. Let’s think about flushing (冲) toilets, for example. Every day, plenty of clean fresh water are used to flush away human waste. This doesn’t seem like the wisest use of our fresh water, does it?
Some people are already rethinking such practices. They are looking for smarter ways to use water.
I recently visited Jenfelder, a new neighborhood in Hamburg, Germany, with a wastewater reuse project! Traditionally, water comes into a city from outside, and wastewater is sent back to treatment factories far away. This new system separates wastewater into three streams to be reused locally. Rainwater is collected to water the gardens. “Gray water” from kitchen and bathroom is used to flush toilets. And “Black water” from toilets is sent to a local treatment factory to be turned into biogas (沼气). The system reduces water use by 30 percent and produce electricity for hundreds of homes.
Perhaps all new neighborhoods around the world could follow Jenfelder’s example.

根据材料内容选择最佳答案。

A. They are made for astronauts. B. They can produce sweat and urine.

12. How does the writer develop opinions of recycling in paragraph 2?
A. By telling a joke. B. By asking questions. C. By making a survey. D. By using an old saying.
13. Which mind map shows the new system in paragraph 4?
A. B. C. D.
14. Which opinion might the writer agree with?
A. It’s not possible to recycle wastewater from Urine.
B. We should start recycling wastewater for drinking first.
C. It’s not wise to flush away human waste with fresh water.
D. The new system can reduce electricity use by 30 percent.
15. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Turning waste into wonder B. Visiting a talented neighbor
C. How to solve water pollution D. How to live on the desert planet
