四、阅读理解(每小题2分,共10分)
Passage1
The customs(习惯) in different countries are rather different. If I have dinner with a Chinese host, he always puts more food onto my plates as soon as I have eaten it up. This often discomforts(使……不安) me greatly. I have to eat the food even if I do not want to. Because it is bad manners in the West to leave one’s food on the plate. I have already noticed that when a Chinese sits at an American’s dinner party, he hardly asks for food or drink though he is still hungry or thirsty.
This might be good manners in China but not in the West at all. In the United States, it is not polite to keep asking someone again and again to accept something. If Americans want something, they will ask for it directly. If not, they will say,“No, thanks.” When the host provides an American with beer, for example, he might say, “No, thanks. I’ll take some orange juice if you don’t mind.”That is what an American will do.
So when you go to the United States, you’d better remember the famous saying: “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”
( )31.What often discomforts the speaker when he has dinner with a Chinese host?
A.The host always leaves food on the plate.
B.The host always talks a lot.
C.The host always asks him to eat more.
D.The host always puts more food onto his plates as soon as he has eaten it up.
( )32.Which of the following is considered bad manners in the West?
A.To leave the plate on the table.
B.To leave one’s food on the plate.
C.To ask the host for more food.
D.To leave the dinner table while eating.
( )33.What does a Chinese often do when he is still hungry at an American’s dinner?
A.He asks for food.
B.He hardly asks for food.
C.He keeps asking someone again and again to accept something.
D.He will eat and drink a lot.
( )34.What will be considered impolite in the United States?
A.To say no to the offer of food or drink.
B.To keep asking someone to accept something.
C.To ask for food directly.
D.To have a direct way of speaking.
( )35.“When in Rome, do as the Romans do” means ________.
A.When one is in another country, one should keep one’s customs.
B.When you live in other countries, you should keep their customs.
C.When you are in Rome, you should love Romans.
D.When one is in Rome, one should do as Americans do.
Passage2
One day a baby snail(蜗牛)found that he had to carry a big and heavy shell(壳) at any time. He was confused, so he asked his mother why.
His mother said, “We don’t have bones(骨头) to support us. We move slowly, so we need a shell to protect us.”
The baby snail asked again, “The caterpillar(毛毛虫)has no bones either, and she can’t move quickly. Why can she live without a shell?”
His mother answered, “Because a caterpillar will become a butterfly. She can fly high into the sky. The sky can protect her.”
The baby snail had another question, “But the earthworm(蚯蚓)moves like us. He has no bones and he can’t turn into a butterfly. Why doesn’t he carry a hard and heavy shell?”
His mother said, “He can dig a hole and get into the ground. The earth can protect him.”
The baby snail then cried, “We are so poor! We have no protection from the sky or from the ground!”
His mother smiled at him,“That’s why we have a shell. We don’t depend on the sky or the ground for protection. We depend on ourselves.”
