四 阅读理解
Elephants are incredible creatures with special features like a long trunk, tusks, large ears, strong legs, and tough but sensitive grey skin. Their trunks help them breathe, get food and water to their mouths, and pick up things. Tusks, similar to teeth, serve as both tools and weapons.
Male Asian elephants are usually about 261—289 cm tall at the shoulder and weigh between 3.5—4.6 tons, while females are a bit smaller, about 228—252 cm and 2.3—3.1 tons. In the wild, elephants can live up to 70 years. They communicate with each other through touch, sight, smell, and sound.
Despite being amazing, elephants are in great danger. One of the most significant dangers is the ivory(象牙) trade. The animals are killed for their ivory tusks which are very rare and beautiful. The tusks are made into handicrafts or jewelry and sold at very high prices. In order to earn more money, some people even risk their lives to kill the elephant just to get its ivory.
Another danger to wild elephants is destruction of elephant habitats by human activities. Humans cut down forests, develop more land for farming and pollute more land. All these directly destroy the ecological balance and do a lot of harm to the elephant habitats.
In the past, elephants were used as working animals in Asia. They were used to carry people and heavy objects in war. Today, they are often put on display in zoos, or kept for entertainment in circuses. That’s one reason why the elephant population is declining.
As human beings, we need to pass on the concept of protecting wildlife. Both the government and organizations should make efforts to do it. In this way, more people can understand the importance of protecting wildlife. Only by living in a friendly way with nature can we have a happy and balanced Earth.
( ) 1. What are the reasons for the decline in elephant numbers?
A. Elephant illnesses and special features. B. Trade of ivory and fewer living places.
C. Short life of elephants and bad environment. D. Wars and animal fighting.
( ) 2. What is the incorrect description of the elephant’s appearance?
A. It has big ears and four strong legs. B. It has a long and useful trunk.
C. It has hard and beautiful tusks. D. It has soft and grey skin.
( ) 3. What is the author’s view on elephant protection?
A. We should stop using elephants to carry heavy things for us.
B. The government should stop elephants’ performances in the circuses.
C. Organizations should raise more money to build more parks to keep elephants.
D. We human beings should work together to protect elephants.
