Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day; teach him to fish, and he’ll eat for a lifetime.
In 1991, while teaching English in Ukraine, we did some sightseeing. One weekend in Kherson, a port city, I boarded the wrong ferry, going to somewhere I never knew. On the ferry I was recognized by two students at the college I was visiting. One of them was going to visit her parents at their “summerhouse”, a vegetable garden on a small island. When the young lady understood that I had no destination in mind, she invited me along and I agreed. It was the sort of visit with a family one hopes for, and rarely gets, in a foreign country. Her father was an amateur photographer, and since the fastest film he could get locally was ASA 64, he was thrilled that I could leave him a few rolls of ASA 400 color film. The mother prided herself on her cooking, but had limited supplies, so they walked around the island and invited several other families to a potluck supper. The main course was sturgeon (鲟), which was at least six feet long in the river. It was a gift of a fish that must have fed a few families for several days.
In 1965, I was studying German in Munich, Germany. I met a young American man who had been sent to Munich for business. He could not find the local branch of his company, and I gave him directions. When he left Munich, he gave me the food he’d been carrying, a can of gefilte fish, a sort of seasoned fish ball. I was feeling homesick, and this old favorite really hit the spot. A gift of canned gefilte fish seemed an improbable favor to return. But nearly 50 years later, I had a cousin who was working in Nairobi, Kenya. He wanted to organize an American-style Passover Seder (逾越节晚餐) for his friends, but could not find American-style gefilte fish in Kenya. While it usually comes in bottles, I was able to locate some packed in cans, and I mailed a box of canned gefilte fish to him from America.
4. What can we learn about the author’s visit to the Ukrainian family?
A. It was a hard-won chance. B. It had been long-expected.
C. It was served with many dishes. D. It lacked local cultural elements.
5. What does “hit the spot” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Stirred up emotions. B. Created a problem.
C. Started a tradition. D. Satisfied a need.
6. Why did the author choose gefilte fish in cans to mail to his cousin?
A. His cousin liked canned gefilte fish the most.
B. Canned gefilte fish was the author’s favorite.
C He received canned gefilte fish and paid it forward.
D. Canned gefilte fish was an American culture symbol.
7. What is the author’s intention of writing this text?
A. To stress the importance of teaching skills.
B. To teach us how to react to an act of kindness.
C. To recommend us to seek help when necessary.
D To encourage us to repay the people helping us.
C
A new research by Stanford University psychology Professor Jeanne Tsai and her team suggests a key puzzle involves culture. The team examined the emotional content of Twitter posts made by users in the United States and Japan.
Most previous studies on social media have focused on Western users. In contrast, the Stanford team included a non-Western context. “It just felt for me that a piece is missing if you don’t consider culture,” said lead author and graduate student Tiffany Hsun. “Culture is such an important aspect in terms of social media and connecting people.”
The research team analyzed thousands of tweets from both countries. They used a tool called SentiStrength which scores texts based on positivity, negativity, and emotional intensity. Their analysis revealed clear cultural patterns: American users generally produce more positive and high-energy content (e.g., The cutest pictures are from Kindergarten graduation! ♥), while Japanese users tend to post messages with calmer, lower-arousal emotions (e.g., Another week of exams then I’m free ).
However, the opposite seemed to apply after users had been exposed to others’ posts. “Users seemed to be most influenced by others’ posts when those posts contained feelings against their cultural values.” explained Hsu, “So for the U. S., users are most influenced by others’ high arousal negative content like nervousness, but for Japan, users are most influenced by others’ high arousal positive states like excitement.” The researchers described this effect as “affective hijacking”, in which exposure to content that goes against users’ cultural values temporarily redirects their own content.
Researchers aren’t totally sure where these disruptive posts from, but they noticed these posts often spread fake news or lies. This suggests to them that the content may be generated by people attempting to mislead others or even by algorithms created to stir up disputes. They suggested that future developments might include software tools similar to junk email blockers.
8. What is the main purpose of the Stanford research?
A. To improve tools for checking text emotions.
B. To compare social media habits in two countries.
C. To prove fake news spreads faster across cultures.
D. To study how culture affects online emotional posts.
9. According to the study, American users tend to produce posts with emotions like ________.
A. anger and anxiety B. sadness and depression
C. delight and excitement D. calmness and relaxation
10 Why were Japanese users more influenced by high-arousal positive posts?
A. Such posts are common in Japan. B. Their culture lacks interaction.
C. Such posts conflict with their culture. D. Their culture values positive emotions.
11. What social problem might “affective hijacking” cause?
A. Confusion of cultural identity among young users.
B. Spread of online rumors and cross-culture conflicts.
C. Overload of information on social media platforms.
D. Increase in cyberbullying based on cultural differences.
D
In Portugal, near the town of Alqueva, lies Europe’s largest artificial lake, home to an innovative floating solar-power plant developed by EDP, a leading renewable energy company. Despite initial skepticism about the high costs and potential issues of floating solar technology, this project represents the sector’s maturation and readiness for expansion.
In this first phase of the project at Alqueva, engineers have stationed some 12,000 PV modules (光伏组件) on floating platforms made from partially recycled plastic and locally sourced soft wood. These are connected to an energy-storage system combining batteries and are integrated with the hydroelectric dam’s power station.
Floating solar projects do face plenty of challenges. The kit has to he water-, wave-, wind- and storm-resistant, which adds complexity and cost. The fish in lakes attract plenty of birds, whose droppings can block the sun. To deal with this, engineers for the project at Alqueva have developed remote-controlled cleaning robots and are working on autonomous ones.
Yet floating solar projects also enjoy several advantages. When located at existing hydroelectric dams they do not require any additional land and can be connected to the grid (电网) without the multi-year wait common for solar projects. The cooling effect of being on water especially boosts the efficiency of the modules, with studies suggesting gains of between 5% and 15% over land-based PV, while the shade they produce slows the water evaporation (蒸发) of the lake.
EDP views floating solar as a cornerstone of its renewable energy strategy. The initial 5 megawatts (MW兆瓦) capacity at Alqueva may seem modest, but it’s just the beginning. The company is planning a second phase, which will see an additional 70MW capacity by 2025. According to Wood Mackenzie, a leading consultancy, floating solar technology could deliver up to 60,000MW of renewable energy globally by 2031. “This may pale in comparison to the 1,600,000MW of solar capacity installed as of last year. But every bit counts,” he added.
12. Which of the following best describes the EDP project?
A. Land-saving and efficient. B. Innovative and labor-saving.
C. Economical and eco-friendly. D. Challenging and experimental.
13. Why are cleaning robots needed?
A. They prevent water damage. B. They protect modules.
C. They reduce manual costs. D. They remove bird waste.
14. What advantage of floating solar projects is highlighted?
A. They use local soft wood only. B. They reduce water loss via shading.
C. They create new habitats for wildlife. D. They need no new power stations.
15. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Floating Solar Ready to Shine. B. The Dawn of Renewable Energy.
C. Solar Power or Hydroelectric Power. D. 5MW to 75MW: Alqueva’s Solar Leap.

This story occurred during our trip to the US in 2013. My husband and I decided on visiting Cape Cod, a beautiful sea scenic spot, which is about three hours drive from the city of Boston. Our daughter who then lived in Salem close to Boston dropped us off at 8 am at one of the pick-up points of the tour bus in Boston. We decided on returning home on our own in the evening as we thought that we could catch a local train to Salem from Boston. Our daughter insisted that she would pick us up in the evening but we were confident of our ability to find our way and not wanting to trouble her, so we refused her offer.
We had a great time in Cape Cod and returned to Boston at six in the evening. We thought that the Boston commuter (通勤) rail station was close to the last but one stage before the drop-off point and so got off the bus at that stage. My husband has a very good memory and a keen sense of direction and so I blindly followed him, without knowing where we were heading to. We found ourselves to be just going round with the station nowhere in sight! Being a Sunday, the roads were deserted with not many people walking around. We did find a few but initially were a bit hesitant to ask strangers for directions. Finally, having no other option, we approached a gentleman, who himself was struggling with a road map and so our inquiry was in vain! We started getting worried. We had no cell phone to call our daughter either.
Next, we saw a young American guy coming from the opposite direction. We approached him and explained the dilemma in which we were placed. On hearing our problem, he personally took us to the station, which was just a few blocks away. On reaching there, we found to our disappointment that the dollar coins which we put in the narrow hole of the ticket machine just fell through the hole without printing our tickets.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Another guy standing near the machine told us that the machine was out of order.

5. What does “hit the spot” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Stirred up emotions. B. Created a problem.
C. Started a tradition. D. Satisfied a need.
6. Why did the author choose gefilte fish in cans to mail to his cousin?
A. His cousin liked canned gefilte fish the most.
B. Canned gefilte fish was the author’s favorite.
C. He received canned gefilte fish and paid it forward.
D. Canned gefilte fish was an American culture symbol.
7. What is the author’s intention of writing this text?
A. To stress the importance of teaching skills.

10. Why were Japanese users more influenced by high-arousal positive posts?
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. C 11. B

根据第四段““Users seemed to be most influenced by others’ posts when those posts contained feelings against their cultural values.” explained Hsu, “So for the U. S., users are most influenced by others’ high arousal negative content like nervousness, but for Japan, users are most influenced by others’ high arousal positive states like excitement.”
根据最后一段“Researchers aren’t totally sure where these disruptive posts from, but they noticed these posts often spread fake news or lies. This suggests to them that the content may be generated by people attempting to mislead others or even by algorithms created to stir up disputes. (研究人员并不完全确定这些破坏性帖子来自哪里,但他们注意到这些帖子经常传播假新闻或谎言。这让他们认为,这些内容可能是由试图误导他人的人生成的,甚至是由旨在挑起争端的算法生成的)”可知,“情感劫持”可能引起的社会问题是网络谣言的传播和跨文化冲突。故选B。

【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. A

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Another guy standing near the machine told us that the machine was out of order.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On reaching home, we told our folks about this.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
Another guy who was standing near the machine told us that the machine was out of order. Without a moment’s pause, the helpful man swiftly pulled out his credit card and used it to buy the tickets for us. “Here you go,” he said with a warm smile, handing over the tickets. Though we offered him the money, he politely declined, giving us the sense that his kindness was entirely unconditional. He even checked the train schedule and urged us to hurry, as the next train was due to depart within minutes. With a cheerful “Goodbye and have a great day,” he waved us off.
On reaching home, we told our folks about this. They were deeply touched and asked if we had taken the young man’s name to acknowledge his kindness publicly — perhaps through The Boston Globe. Sadly, we hadn’t, lost in the rush and emotion of the moment. Yet, his anonymity made the gesture even more profound. His selfless help turned a stressful evening into a lasting memory-one that reaffirmed our belief in the power of simple, genuine human kindness.
