Dear Uncle George,
I’m writing to you for a problem with my homework. We have to do it in a group. We have to finish it this Friday, but Gary, the boy in our group, has done nothing helpful. He just keeps rocking the boat.
Every time we talk about the work with him, he always says, “Don’t worry. I’ll do it later.” But he seldom (几乎不) does his job. And when he does, he does it the wrong way. Someone has to do it for him again. What’s worse is when Ms Lin asks about our group. Gary always tells her that we don’t work hard enough except him. I’m really mad at Gary about this. We’re in the same group. Shouldn’t we help each other to do a better job?
Yours,
Simon

Once, some people travelled to an area of Sahara Desert. Unluckily, they lost their way. In the sun, the wind blew and the sand flew in the air, like the iron sand fried to red, hitting the group members’ faces. Everyone ran out of water. At this time, the leader took out a water pot and said, “There is a pot (水壶) of water here. But before we pass through the desert, nobody is allowed to drink it.”
A pot of water became a source (源泉) of belief to cross the desert and a goal of survival (存活), on which hope depended. The water pot was passed on in the team members’ hands. It felt heavy. A firm look reappeared on their faces, though they felt hopeless just now. Finally, the group walked out of the desert safely. With tears of joy, all of them opened the valuable pot with hands carefully, but a full pot of sand poured out slowly.
Under the hot sun, was it a pot of sand that really saved them in the desert? Their belief, like a seed (种子), had grown in their hearts, and led them out of the hard situation in the end.
In fact, there is no real impasse (绝境) in life. Whatever hardships you have suffered, or whatever pain you have experienced, as long as there is a seed of belief in your heart, you will get out of the difficult situation someday.
This is life, as long as there is a seed, there is hope.

C. The group leader raised hope of survival in a bad situation.
D. The group of members failed to walk through the desert.
12. What does the story tell us?
A. Teamwork is important. B. Belief is a seed.
C. Life is full of hope. D. Value water when you are in desert.

Wang Tao did a quick tour around the city of Chengdu during the weekend. “Chengdu is perfect for ‘special forces style tourism’ because there are good places to take pictures, and the whole city is an amazing food court (美食广场).” Wang said.
Recently, a new kind of tourism called special forces style tourism is becoming popular in China. This new kind of tourism means visiting tourist attractions in a short period (时段). Wang Tao visited three local attractions on the day she arrived, and spent the second day to see the pandas. Before catching the train home, she also did some shopping and enjoyed a hearty dinner at a famous local restaurant.
With the popularity (流行) of social media, people prefer showing their photos and get “likes” from their friends through social circles. At the same time, tourist attractions provide some special photo slots (打卡点) to attract visitors. Therefore, special forces style tourism has become a way for people to show their lives and experiences by sharing photos and recordings. That’s why people like this kind of tourism.
Not all Chinese people enjoy special forces style tourism. Many people prefer to take a long vacation to go to a place for slow tourism and experience the local way of life. They enjoy slow-paced (慢速的) deep travel, by staying for a long time to gain a deeper understanding of local culture, customs, and experience local life. The slow-paced travel pays more attention to feelings and experiences.
However, special forces tours do not necessarily mean that you have not fully experienced the charm of tourism. People remember the details of their travels more deeply by taking photos and recording them. These photos have become an important way for them to recall their travels, so they are not just looking at them without feeling them.
The value of tourism lies in discovery, experience, and perception (感知). Therefore, whether it is special forces style tourism or slow-paced deep travel, it is worth respecting and understanding. We should all feel the scenery of the journey with our hearts, see with our eyes and walk with our feet.

William is one of my students. His grades were really poor. I was often worried that he would not be able to pass the exam until the last few weeks of the year when we were having a class project. ____17____ Planting the seeds was exciting for most of the students, but the growing part was much less so. It took a long time to see the results, and most kids had little patience for it.
But William was totally different from other kids. Every afternoon, William made sure his seed was taken care of. Many weeks passed, few seeds sprouted (发芽). And those sprouted seeds didn’t grow very tall. ____18____ So before summer, I asked if he’d mind (介意) planting his young plants at school. He agreed with my idea. We picked out the perfect place behind the library. Then we took his young plants there and hoped for the best.
About a month into the summer vacation the next year, I happened to drive by there. ____19____ To my surprise, behind the library, stood beautiful sunflowers. They must have been at least 12 feet tall.
____20____ Because I saw that special seed planted inside him. Others would too. And, one day, he’d bloom (开花) and shine—just like his sunflowers.
A. At that moment, I knew I didn’t have to worry about William.
B. But William’s seed was different and grew well.
C. I wondered how the sunflowers were growing.
D. In the project, each child planted a sunflower seed in a bottle.
E. They grew well because of William’s hard work.

根据上文“Many weeks passed, few seeds sprouted. And those sprouted seeds didn’t grow very tall.”和下文“So before summer, I asked if he’d mind planting his young plants at school.”
根据上文“About a month into the summer vacation the next year, I happened to drive by there.”和下文“To my surprise, behind the library, stood beautiful sunflowers.”
根据下文“Because I saw that special seed planted inside him. Others would too. And, one day, he’d bloom and shine—just like his sunflowers.”可知,作者看到向日葵长得那么好,联想到William,觉得不必再为他担心,因为有一天,他会绽放光芒——就像他的向日葵一样;选项A“在那一刻,我知道我不必再为威廉担心了。”符合语境。故选A。
