Is comprehension the same whether a person
reads a text onscreen or on paper? And are listening
to and viewing content as effective as reading the
written word when covering the same material? The
answers to both questions are often “no”. The reasons
relate to a variety of factors, including reduced
concentration,an entertainment mindset (心态)and a
tendency to multitask while consuming digital content.
When reading texts of several hundred words or
more, learning is generally more successful when its
on paper than onscreen. A large amount of research
confirms this finding. The benefits of print reading
particularly shine through when experimenters move
from posing simple tasks—like identifying the main
idea in a reading passage—to ones that require
mental abstraction—such as drawing inferences from
a text.
The differences between print and digital reading
results are partly related to papers physical
properties. With paper, there is a literal laying on of
hands, along with the visual geography of distinct
pages. People often link their memory of what theyve
read to how far into the book it was or where it was on
the page.
But equally important is the mental aspect.
Reading researchers have proposed a theory called
“shallowing hypothesis (假说)”. According to this
theory, people approach digital texts with a mindset
suited to social media, which are often not so
serious, and devote less mental effort than when they
are reading print.
Audio (音频)and video can feel more engaging
than text, and so university teachers increasingly turn
to these technologies—say, assigning an online talk
instead of an article by the same person. However,
psychologists have demonstrated that when adults
read news stories, they remember more of the content
than if they listen to or view identical pieces.
Digital texts, audio and video all have
educational roles, especially when providing
resources not available in print. However, for
maximizing learning where mental focus and reflection
are called for, educators shouldnt assume all media
are the same, even when they contain identical
words.
1. What does the underlined phrase “shine through”
in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Seem unlikely to last.
B. Seem hard to explain.
C. Become ready to use.
D. Become easy to notice.
—012—
2. What does the shallowing hypothesis assume?
A. Readers treat digital texts lightly.
B. Digital texts are simpler to understand.
C. People select digital texts randomly.
D. Digital texts are suitable for social media.
3. Why are audio and video increasingly used by
university teachers?
A. They can hold students attention.
B. They are more convenient to prepare.
C. They help develop advanced skills.
D. They are more informative than text.
4. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. Students should apply multiple learning
techniques.
B. Teachers should produce their own teaching
material.
C. Print texts cannot be entirely replaced in
education.
D. Education outside the classroom cannot be
ignored.
B
Chinas space program has become the first to
land a spacecraft on the socalled dark side of the
moon. The landing on Thursday brought the country
closer to its goal of becoming a space power. The
landing of the Change 4 spacecraft at 10:26 in the
morning Beijing Time has opened up a new chapter in
human lunar exploration.
Change 4 sent a picture taken at 11:40 in the
morning back to Earth. It shows a small crater and an
empty surface that appears to be lit by a light from the
lunar explorer.
The landing is an example of Chinas growing
desire to compete with the American,Russian and
European space programs. China also wants to
strengthen its position as a regional and international
power.
Hou Xiyun is a professor at Nanjing Universitys
school of astronomy and space science. He told the
Associated Press,“On the whole,Chinas space
technology still lags behind the West, but with
Change 4 landing on the far side of the moon,we
have raced to the front. China plans to explore Mars,
Jupiter and asteroids in the future. Theres no doubt
that our nation will go farther and farther.”
In 2013,Change 3 made the first moon landing
since the former Soviet Unions Luna 24 in 1976. The
United States is the only country that has successfully
sent a person to the moon. But China is considering a
crewed mission,as well. For now,China plans to send
a Change 5 spacecraft to the moon next year and
have it return to Earth with collected particles.
Change 4 will make astronomical observations
and examine the structure and mineral composition of
the ground above and below the surface.
Yu Guobin is a Change 4 mission spokesman.
He said,“The far side of the moon is a rare quiet
place that is free from interference from radio signals
from Earth. The mission will provide important
information for studying the origin of stars and nebula
5. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The secrets of the moon have completely
revealed.
B. China is making rapid progress in space
exploration.
C. The space programs in the United States lag far
behind.
D. The former Soviet Union sent man to the moon
in 1976.
6. What is Hou Xiyuns attitude toward Chinas space
exploration?
—112—
A. Doubtful. B. Confident.
C. Critical. D. Pessimistic.
7. Change 5 mission provide scientists with
information .
A. to research how the stars are formed
B. to study what the moon is made up of
C. to study why the moon is so quiet
D. to look for radio signals from Earth
8. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. China Has Become an International Space Power
B. Secrets of the Moon Have Been Revealed by
China
C. China Has Contributed to Human Lunar
Exploration
D. China Successfully Lands on the Dark Side of
the
Moon
Why I Love Cycling
One of the first things I did when I moved to a new city was to hire a bike. Why? 1. F You travel much
faster than on foot and you notice so much more of your surroundings than when in a bus or a car. Its more
appealing to wander down small streets if they seem interesting,as you can quickly get back to the main road.
Besides,I soon discovered plenty more benefits to cycling.
A bike means that fewer places, especially in a small city like the one where I live now, feel far away. For
example, cycling to work takes me half the time that it would to walk. 2. E
Of course, there are obvious health benefits of cycling—a bit of extra movement as part of your daily
routine can help you keep fit and healthy. Cycling on my way to work also makes me feel more energetic in the
mornings.
3. C While cars pollute the environment, bikes are carbonneutral. Furthermore, thanks to being petrol
free, bikes are cheaper to run,buy and fix than cars. Even if you dont own a car,a bike can pay for itself when
compared to the price of bus tickets.
4. A Always wear a helmet, pay attention to other traffic and dont forget your lights at night. Make
sure you know the road rules, especially in a new place. Some cities are more cyclefriendly than others.
5. D Luckily, where I live now is pretty easy to ride a bike around, thanks to having lots of cycle lanes and
not too many hills!
A. However,be careful when cycling.
B. I have to learn to ride safely on the right of the road.
C. Importantly, cycling also helps to reduce your carbon footprint.
D. And sometimes city roads are difficult or unpleasant for cyclists.
E. Riding a bike also means youre not restricted by bus timetables.
F. Seeing a city by bike is ideal for settling in and learning your way around.
G. Cycling to work excellently fits for someone who wants to save their pocket money.

Dear Editor,
Im writing to express my concern about the life of the
senior.
Its a good idea for us students to visit seniors at
weekends to keep them company, from whom we can benefit a
lot at the same time. Besides,we can organize some activities
such as singing, dancing and traveling, thus enabling them to
lead a more socially active life. Whats more, convenience
should be provided in public places like supermarkets and
hospitals.
Caring for the elderly is a traditional virtue, which will
contribute to not only a happy family but also a harmonious
society. Therefore, lets do something to make a difference.
Yours,
Li Hua

根据前文“When reading texts of
several hundred words or more, learning is generally more
successful when its on paper than onscreen. A large amount
of research confirms this finding.
成效,以及后文“when experimenters move from posing
simple tasks—like identifying the main idea in a reading
passage—to ones that require mental abstraction—such as
drawing inferences from a text(当实验人员从提出简单的
根据第四段“But equally important is
the mental aspect. Reading researchers have proposed a
theory called ‘shallowing hypothesis (假说)’. According
to this theory, people approach digital texts with a mindset
suited to social media, which are often not so serious, and
devote less mental effort than when they are reading print.
故选A项。
can feel more engaging than text, and so university teachers
increasingly turn to these technologies—say, assigning an
online talk instead of an article by the same person.(音频
选A项。
根据最后一段“Digital texts,audio and
video all have educational roles, especially when providing
resources not available in print. However, for maximizing
learning where mental focus and reflection are called for,
educators shouldnt assume all media are the same, even
when they contain identical words.

bike also means youre not restricted by bus timetables.(骑
