Abby Jaramillo
根据第一段中的“And at first it is,
says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started
Urban Sprouts,a school garden program at four lowincome
‘They
come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful,
insects are awful.’Though some are initially scared of the
insects and turned off by the dirt, most are eager to try
something new.(她说。
根据最后一段“She adds that the
programs benefits go beyond nutrition. Some students get
so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to
start their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the
garden seems to have a calming effect on Jaramillos special
education students, many of whom have emotional control
issues. ‘They get outside,’ she says,‘and they feel
故选A。
Growing Vegetable Lovers

根据文章第一段“The goal of this book
is to make the case for digital minimalism, including a
detailed exploration of what it asks and why it works, and
then to teach you how to adopt this philosophy if you decide
its right for you.

value.
故选A。
通过文章第四段“In the final chapter

digital declutter. In doing so,Ill draw on an experiment I
ran in 2018 in which over 1,600 people agreed to perform a

both.”及最后一段中的“in the classroom for hearing
poetry”可知选C。
据“buying extra”和“from price reductions”可知,此处是
故填to benefit。
either. . .
or. . .
故填or。
3. that / which 考查定语从句。
或which。故填that / which。
what。
根据空后“that they lead to waste”可知,此处应用名词
sausages。 故填be
offered。
7. have started
根据“Over the last two years”可知,此处
故填have
started。
故填the。
10. ones

[4] Unit 1 Looking forwards
Section Ⅳ Writing—Writing an application letter
A
The goal of this book is to make the case for
digital minimalism,including a detailed exploration
of what it asks and why it works, and then to teach
you how to adopt this philosophy if you decide its
right for you.
To do so,I divided the book into two parts. In
part one,I describe the philosophical foundations of
digital minimalism, starting with an examination of
the forces that are making so many peoples digital
lives increasingly intolerable, before moving on to a
detailed discussion of the digital minimalism
philosophy.
Part one concludes by introducing my suggested
method for adopting this philosophy: the digital
declutter . This process requires you to step away
from optional online activities for thirty days. At the
end of the thirty days, you will then add back a small
number of carefully chosen online activities that you
believe will provide massive benefits to the things you
value.
In the final chapter of part one,Ill guide you
through carrying out your own digital declutter. In
doing so,Ill draw on an experiment I ran in 2018 in
which over 1,600 people agreed to perform a digital
declutter. Youll hear these participants stories and
learn what strategies worked well for them, and what
traps they encountered that you should avoid.
The second part of this book takes a closer look
at some ideas that will help you cultivate (培养)a
sustainable digital minimalism lifestyle. In these
chapters,I examine issues such as the importance of
solitude (独处)and the necessity of cultivating high
quality leisure to replace the time most now spend on
mindless device use. Each chapter concludes with a
collection of practices, which are designed to help
you act on the big ideas of the chapter. You can view
these practices as a toolbox meant to aid your efforts
to build a minimalist lifestyle that works for your
particular circumstances.
1. What is the book aimed at? B
A. Teaching critical thinking skills.
B. Advocating a simple digital lifestyle.
C. Solving philosophical problems.
D. Promoting the use of a digital device.
2. What does the underlined word “declutter” in
Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Clearup. B. Addon.
C. Checkin. D. Takeover.
3. What is presented in the final chapter of part
one?
A. Theoretical models.
B. Statistical methods.
C. Practical examples.
D. Historical analyses.
—561—
4. What does the author suggest readers do with the
practices offered in part two?
A. Use them as needed.
B. Recommend them to friends.
C. Evaluate their effects.
D. Identify the ideas behind them.
B
No poem should ever be discussed or
“analyzed”, until it has been read aloud by
someone,a teacher or a student. Better still,perhaps,
is the practice of reading it twice, once at the
beginning of the discussion and once at the end,so
the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears
of it.
All discussions of poetry are, in fact,
preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of
the poem is, eventually, the most concrete
“interpretation (解释)”of it, suggesting tone,
rhyme, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read
the work in his or her own voice,on records or on
films,is obviously a special reward. But even those
aids to teaching cannot replace the student and the
teacher reading it or,best of all, reciting it.
I have come to think,in fact, that time spent
reading a poem aloud is much more important than
“analyzing”it and “exchanging of views”,if there
isnt time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers
of English is to have students love poetry and take it
easy when we are reading a poem. Poetry is “a
criticism of life”,and “a heightening(提升) of
life”. It is “a most appropriate approach to the truth
of feeling”,and it“can transform your life”. It also
deserves a place in the teaching of language and
literature more central than it presently occupies.
I am not saying that every English teacher must
try out poetryteaching. Those who dont like it should
not be forced to convey that negative feeling to anyone
else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in
mind a few things about its essential nature, about its
sound as well as its sense, and they must make room
in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking
about it.
5. To have a better understanding of a poem,one
should .
A. discuss it with others
B. analyze it by oneself
C. copy it down in a notebook
D. practise reading it aloud
6. According to the writer, one of the purposes of
teaching English is to get students .
A. to understand life
B. to enjoy poetry
C. to become teachers
D. to become poets
7. What does the last sentence in the third paragraph
imply?
A. More stress should be laid on the teaching
of poetry.
B. Poetry is more important than any other
literature genre.
C. One cannot enjoy life fully without a good
understanding of poetry.
D. Poetry is the foundation of all language and
literature courses.
8. The underlined phrase “make room”in the last
paragraph could be best replaced by “ ”.
A. build a booth
B. provide equipment
C. leave a certain amount of time
D. set aside enough space

The shelves in most supermarkets are full of familysize this and multibuy that. However,if youre
shopping for one, buying extra 1. (benefit)from price reductions doesnt make sense. Either your
shopping is then too heavy to carry home 2. you cant use what youve bought while its still fresh.
Of course, shops are not charities—they price goods in the way 3. will make them the most
money. If most of their customers are happy to buy larger quantities, thats 4. theyll promote. But
that leaves the solo (单独)customers out of pocket and disappointed.
Many supermarkets are no longer doing “buy one get one free”promotions because of the 5.
(criticize)that they lead to waste. Consumers prefer money off individual items. However, though its nice to
get a few cents off a pack of sausages,it would help even more if they could sometimes 6. (offer)
in smaller packs. Even the biggest sausage fan doesnt want to eat them every day.
If your supermarket sells loose produce, then buying smaller quantities is easier. Over the last two years,
some supermarkets 7. (start)selling chicken or salad in packs 8. (design)with two
halves containing separate portions (份). Then, when you use one section, 9. other stays fresh.
Who knows, perhaps some of the more forwardlooking 10. (one)may yet come out with a
whole range of “just for you”pack sizes with special offers as well.
