My job was to follow behind the runners in an ambulance in case any of them needed medical attention. As the athletes began to pace themselves, the front runners started to disappear. It was then that my eyes were drawn to the woman in blue running shorts and a baggy white Tshirt. I knew we were already watching our “last runner”. Her feet were turned in,yet her left knee was turned out. Her legs were so crippled and bent that it seemed impossible for her to walk, let alone run a marathon. The driver and I watched in silence as she slowly moved forward. We would move forward a little bit, then stop and wait for her to gain some distance. Then wed slowly move forward a little bit more. As I watched her struggle to put one fo                      ot —312— in front of the other,I found myself breathing for her and urging her forward. I wanted her to stop, and at the same time,I prayed that she wouldnt. Finally, she was the only runner left in sight. I sat on the edge of my seat and watched with respect and amazement as she pushed forward with sheer determination through the last miles. When the finish line came into sight, the cheering crowds had long gone home. Yet,standing straight and proud waited a man. He was holding one end of a ribbon tied to a post. She slowly crossed through, leaving both ends of the ribbon fluttering (飘动)behind her. I dont know this womans name, but that day she became a part of my life —a part I often depend on. For her,it wasnt about beating the other runners or winning a prize. It was about finishing what she had set out to do. When I think things are too difficult or I get those “I justcant doit”s,I think of the last runner. Then I realise how easy the task before me really is. 1. What words can best describe the woman? A. Proud and determined. B. Strongwilled and honourable. C. Modest and courageous. D. Diligent and considerate. 2. Whatdoes the underlined word “crippled”in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Disabled. B. Healthy. C. Perfect. D. Strong. 3. What has the author learnt from the woman? A. Dont depend on others when facing hardships. B. Nothing is too tough to accomplish if one is brave enough. C. The disabled can also run a marathon despite their walking difficulty. D. Its not winning but finishing the thing we start that really matters. 4. What could be the best title for the text? A. A Humorous Stranger B. An Unforgettable Job C. The Last Runner D. The Annual Marathon B From talking robots and video phones to rovers on Mars, technology has become so advanced that the previously impossible seems to occur on a daily basis. And yet—we still have no cure for the common cold. Why cant we stop the common cold? According to Peter Barlow, a scientist at Edinburgh Napier University in the UK,the main challenge lies in many different types of cold viruses that are produced by the rhinoviruses (鼻 病毒). There are at least 160 types. They mutate (突变) so easily that they quickly become resistant to drugs,or learn to hide from our immune systems. In other words,a single cure isnt likely to work on every type of cold. However, researchers from Stanford University and the University of California,San Francisco,                                                                      have found a possible answer. They —412— discovered a protein that the viruses need. Without it,they cant spread inside your body. To identify the gene which produces the specific protein needed by the viruses, researchers used a geneediting technique to test all genes in the human genome one by one for thousands of cells. These modified(改变的)cells were then exposed to a range of enteroviruses(肠 道病毒),including the rhinoviruses which cause the common cold. All the viruses were unable to replicate(复制)inside cells without a gene that produces a specific protein, called methyltransferase SETD3. Then, they tested genetically modified mice, which were completely unable to produce the protein. The mice were able to live healthy, normal lives without the protein. “Lacking that gene protected the mice completely from viral infection,”associate professor Jan Carette, from Stanford, told the BBC. “These mice would always die,but they survived and we saw a very strong reduction in viral replication and very strong protection.” Carette said the plan is to find a drug which can temporarily suppress(抑制) the protein, instead of producing genetically modified humans. “We have identified a fantastic target that all enteroviruses and rhinoviruses require and depend on. Take that away and the virus really has no chance,”said Carette.“This is a really good first step—the second step is to have a chemical that mimics (模拟)this genetic deletion,”he added. 5. What does Peter Barlow think is the main problem for prevention of the common cold? A. The slow mutation of some genes. B. The fast speed at which rhinoviruses spread. C. The harm rhinoviruses do to the immune system. D. The wide variety of cold viruses created by rhinoviruses. 6. What can we learn about the protein needed by the viruses? A. It helps the viruses replicate inside our bodies. B. It allows the viruses to mutate easily. C. It helps the viruses become resistant to drugs. D. It accelerates the speed at which the viruses spread. 7. What did the researchers discover in their gene editing study? A. Genetically modified mice died because they lacked the protein. B. The modified cells seemed to protect the mice against viral infections. C. More methyltransferase SETD3 was produced after the cells were modified. D. The geneediting technique was more effective against enteroviruses than rhinoviruses. 8. What will the researchers most probably do next, according to Carette? A. Conduct experiments on genetically modified humans. B. Identify a drug that can help reduce the protein. C. Apply this geneediting technique to control                                                                      other viruses. —512— D. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges. Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them. One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed,his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy—his name was Bernard—had interested her very much. “I wish you could see him,”she said to her own children,John,Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I dont see what he can do.” After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard.“I wish we could help him to earn money,”said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.” “So do I,”said Harry.“We really should do something to assist them.” For some moments,John said nothing, but, suddenly,he sprang to his feet and cried,“I have a great idea!I have a solution that we can all help accomplish(完成).” The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea,it was sure to be a good one.“I tell you what we can do,”said John.“You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us?Well,we can make popcorn(爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.” When Mrs. Meredith heard of Johns idea, she thought it was a good one,        too. 根据画线词所在句“The parents, however, will often choose to let their children die with their eyes intact rather than live without them.” 故选A项。 6. 根据第四段中“Pursuing a patent,he feared, would have meant the tech nique would be kept secret for a long period of time while the paperwork was approved by the U. S. Patent and Trademark Office(USPTO). In the meantime, untold numbers of children would have suffered and perhaps died.” David Abramson。故选B项。 Ⅲ. 根据倒数第二段“I sat on the edge of my seat and watched with respect and amazement as she pushed forward with sheer determination through the last miles.” 根据上文“Her feet were turned in,yet her left knee was turned out.”以 及后文“bent that it seemed impossible for her to walk, let alone run a marathon”可知,这个女 人的腿弯曲,似乎不可能走路,更不用说跑马 拉松了。 故选A项。 3. 根据最后一段“I dont know this womans name, but that day she became a part of my life—a part I often depend on. For her,it wasnt about beating the other runners or winning a prize. It was about finishing what she had set out to do. When I think things are too difficult or I get those ‘I justcantdoit’s,I think of the last runner. Then I realize how easy the task before me really is.” 根据最后一段中“When I think things are too difficult or I get those ‘I justcantdoit’s,I think of the last runner. Then I realize how easy the task before me really is.” 根据第二段中“According to Peter Barlow,a scientist at Edinburgh Napier University in the UK,the main challenge lies in many different types of cold viruses that are pro duced by the rhinoviruses(鼻病毒). There are at least 160 types. They mutate(突变)so easily that they quickly become resistant to drugs,or learn to hide from our immune systems. In other words,a single cure isnt likely to work on every type of cold.” 6.
