When I was in the seventh grade, I volunteered at a hospital during the summer vacation. Most of the time, I was with Mr. Gillespie. He never had any visitors, and nobody seemed to care about him. I spent many days there holding his hand and talking to him. He became a close friend of mine, although he never replied to me. Mr. Gillespie was still in a coma (昏迷).
I was away for a week to go on vacation with my parents, and when I came back, Mr. Gillespie wasn’t in the hospital. I didn’t want to ask the nurses where he was. I was afraid they might tell me he was dead. However, I kept volunteering there for a long time.
Several years passed. One day, when I was at the gas station, I noticed a familiar face. I asked him if his name was Mr. Gillespie, and if he was in a coma about five years ago. With an uncertain look on his face, he replied, “Yes.” I explained how I knew him and what I did in the hospital. With tears in his eyes, he gave me a warm hug.
He told me that when he was in a coma, he could hear me talking and feel me holding his hand. He thought it was an angel, not a person, who was there with him. Mr. Gillespie believed that my voice and touch kept him alive.
Although I haven’t seen him since then, he fills my heart with joy every day. I know that I made a difference between his life and death. More importantly, he has made a very big difference to my life, too. I’ll never forget him and what he did for me—he made me an angel.

A group of old classmates, who have succeeded in their work, got together to visit their teacher. Their talks soon turned to complaining (抱怨) about the stress in their work and life. The teacher went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and many cups. Some of the cups are expensive and lovely, but some are cheap and not beautiful. The teacher told them to help themselves to the coffee.
When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the teacher said, “Have you noticed all the nice-looking expensive cups were taken, leaving behind the cheap ones? It’s OK for you to want only the best for yourselves, but that is why you have the stress in your work and life even if you are very successful now.”
“All of you really wanted the coffee, not the cups, but you chose the best cups and were eyeing each other’s cups.”
“Now think about this, life is the coffee, and money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold life. They do not change the quality (质量) of life. Sometimes, we just care about the cups, and we fail to enjoy the coffee. So, don’t let the cups drive you, enjoy the coffee instead.

Remember when you were a little child trying to learn to walk?
First, you had to learn how to balance (平衡) yourself and stand. You fell down, and then got back up. You laughed sometimes and cried at other times. After much practice, you finally learned how to balance yourself. You got much pleasure from this new feeling of power—you'd stand everywhere you could. It was a happy time—you did it!
Now the next step—walking. You'd seen others do it. It didn't look that hard—just move your legs while you were standing. Wrong—more difficult than you ever imagined. But after you tried again and again and again, you understood how to walk.
If people found you walking, they cheered, "Oh, look at what the kid is doing." This encouraged you! But look back on those days when you were the little child—how many times did you try when no one was watching, or when no one was cheering? You couldn't wait for someone to encourage you to take the next steps. You learned how to encourage yourself.
So, keep trying and encouraging yourself as you learned to walk if you want to succeed in doing something.

【答案】范文:
Dear Li Hua
How is everything going? I’m sorry to hear that you have some problems in your life. Next, I will give you some advice for your problems.
First, if you often cough and have a sore throat, drinking warm honey tea can help. Also, try to avoid cold drinks and get enough rest. Second, if you feel tired easily, make sure you sleep well and do some exercise, like jogging or yoga, to stay healthy. For your parents’ arguments about housework, maybe you can help them more. For example, clean your room or wash dishes. This might make them happier. Finally, if you don’t get along well with your brother, try talking to him. Share your feelings and listen to his thoughts. Maybe you can find common hobbies to do together.
It’s normal to have these problems. Take it easy. I hope you can solve the problems as soon as possible.
Your friend,
Belle
