When my brother died in an accident, I was only 4 years old. But I still felt the big change in my mom’s attitude toward safety. Overnight, I couldn’t walk home from school by myself, even though everyone I knew already did. I couldn’t go to summer camps, because what if something happened to me? As I grew up, the list got longer and longer.
I know my mom was worried about me because after my brother died, I was her only child. As a result, I became a natural worrier. I worried about things like car accidents, earthquakes, losing my wallet — disasters big and small, real and imagined.
The funny part is that you’d never know it by looking at my current life, because I have been constantly forcing myself to do things that frighten or worry me shortly after my mom’s death. Since then I have developed a rule for myself: If anything scares me, then I will force myself to do it at least once. As a result, I’ve done lots of things that my mom would have worried about: I’ve ridden a motorcycle and I’ve traveled — a lot. In fact. I am studying bird flu as a scientist.
There’s something else I don’t usually talk about, but it’s a cornerstone in my belief: When I was 14, I made a decision that I would either live out the rest of my life trying to be “safe” or I could be brave enough to live out an exciting and, yes, sometimes dangerous life.
Even though I inherited(继承) my mother’s cautious nature, I’ve also come to believe that the more often I do things that scare me, the more I realize that I can do a lot more than I originally thought I could do. Believing that has made my world a less scary place.
4. What does the author think of her mother?
A. Courageous. B. Overprotective. C. Hardworking. D. Cruel.
5. How did the rules affect the author before her mother’s death?
A. They led to much more freedom for her. B. They helped her to avoid a lot of accidents.
C. They made her feel more and more worried. D. They encouraged her to be more adventurous.
6. What did the author do to overcome her fear?
A. She tried to do those seemingly scary things. B. She stayed away from the unnecessary risks.
C. She forced herself to focus on her current job. D. She persuaded her mother to stop protecting her.
7. What does the author most likely want to tell us?
A. It’s funny for parents to worry about the kids. B. Fear can be a good thing to some degree.
C. We should be careful in a dangerous world. D. We can achieve more if we can control our fear.
C
It is not generally realized, for example, that a tale written in China in the ninth century is the world’s oldest known version of the story of Cinderella. The next earliest was not published until seven hundred years later — in Lyons, France, in 1544. In addition, 350 other stories that are related in some way to Cinderella have been collected from every continent.
Those Cinderella stories fall into two main groups. In one, the focus is on the ball, while comparatively little attention is paid to the supernatural force that helps her. This is the type most familiar to us and most commonly found in western Europe. In those found in eastern Europe, much attention is paid to the helpful animals. But the Chinese version contains both.
Old though it is, the Chinese version shows definite signs of having been based on still earlier — and now lost — versions. The incident of the ball, for example, is linked with the rest of the story so unnaturally that it seems that the author has borrowed this incident from some still earlier version, but without clearly understanding its significance. It will also be remembered that the king who married the girl came from a country called T’o-huan. Though this country is not identified in the story, we know from Chinese historical writings of that time that there was a small country by that name located near a region called T’o-ho-lo. And T’o-ho-lo can be identified with certainty as close to the modern city of Bangkok in Thailand. This makes it probable that the Chinese story of Cinderella did not originate in China, but was taken there from Southeast Asia, perhaps by the Arabs who went as traders to Canton in large numbers.
This story shows that the same simple virtues which are regarded as basic in the West have been emphasized for centuries in China and other parts of Asia. It is but one example of the way a story or an idea can travel all over the world.
8. What phenomenon is described in the first paragraph?
A. A story usually has different origins.
B. Chinese literature has a very long history.
C. Different countries may have similar stories.
D. French literature was influenced by the Chinese.
9. What is unique about the Chinese version of Cinderella?
A. The plot develops more naturally.
B. It is centered on those helpful animals.
C. Relatively little attention is paid to the ball.
D. It stresses both the ball and the supernatural force.
10. Which evidence shows that the Chinese version originates in Southeast Asia?
A. The original writer’s identity. B. Some related historical records.
C. A newly found version of the story. D. A well-known kingdom in the story.
11. How is the text mainly developed?
A. By analyzing an example. B. By reviewing studies.
C. By telling a very old story. D. By conducting surveys.
D
Last year global investment in wind and solar energy was greater than the money spent on new and existing coal and gas power plants for the first time. As a happy consequence, the green transition (转型) may have sped up by five to ten years. Yet the governments can do more.
One problem is the time-consuming process of obtaining permits. Endless delays have long been a barrier to new projects in America and Europe. The gains from shortening the process can be huge. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that renewable power would rise by an extra 25% by 2027 if such barriers were removed.
The bigger problem is that some renewables providers are now rethinking their investments altogether, because green energy projects are becoming less attractive. Between January 2021 and April 2024, the prices of everything from shipping to industrial metals rose remarkably, which in turn raised the prices of solar and wind energy systems. Higher interest rates have become a headache for builders of green power plants, which are much hungrier for loans than power plants fueled by coal and gas. Such costs would be manageable if they could be passed on. But around the world, renewable energy contracts are being designed to keep electricity cheap — so cheap that generators will struggle to make money.
All these barriers are clogging up project pipelines. From America to Asia, wind developers are trying to renegotiate financing deals, delaying construction or canceling contracts because some projects have become unprofitable. In America, many solar projects are postponed, and in Europe, fewer agreements to buy the power they generate are being signed.
Studies have shown that if investing is to stay attractive, green power will need to be sold at higher prices than governments would like.
12. What can be learned from the second paragraph?
A. Governments have already tried their best.
B. Governmental permits are not necessary.
C. There is great potential for renewables' growth.
D. Non-renewables will rise by another 25% by 2027.
13. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The price of electricity. B. The challenges faced by coal power plants.
C. The availability of loans. D. The declining profit for renewables providers.
14. Which is closest in meaning to “clogging up” underlined in paragraph 4?
A. Blocking. B. Cleaning. C. Expanding. D. Benefiting.
15. What do governments need to do according to the text?
A. Delay some solar projects. B. Raise the price of green power.
C. Cancel unprofitable contracts. D. Provide more loans to generators.

Autumn in a small town meant an annual special event where the boys make small wood cars with the help of their dads for a big race: the Pinewood Derby.
The Elks Club was crowded. The wooden racetrack was already set perfectly by old men who’d spent their lives with levels and squares and pencils riding behind their ears. Before the race was the ceremonial walk-around — each car was displayed and confident boys were enjoying the honors. The room was full of anticipation. Fathers were reliving their youth and proudly watching their sons show themselves.
In a corner was Scott, alone. No father. It was the first time that he had attended the event with his own car. He had always stood by and watched before. His car was a rough block painted red. The front axle (车轴) was bent. He stood with his head down. He knew he had to count on himself, so he devoted himself to “fighting with” the front axle. Perhaps the worst experience for a boy of twelve was to be unnoticed.
Making the rounds and admiring the craftsmanship was Mark. He noticed. Mark was a local father who had unfortunately lost his own child. His heart, though empty, remained kind and compassionate. He was a man who understood the pain of a child’s longing and the importance of a father’s love. He watched as other boys and fathers moved silently past Scott’s seemingly silly red car.
Mark took a few extra steps and stood in front of Scott. “I like the color, ” he said. Scott looked up with surprise and nervously responded, “You really like it, Mr. Mark? ” Scott couldn’t believe Mr. Mark, who was skilled at making wood cars, liked his car. But there was something wrong with the front axle. Mark knelt down (跪下) , his gaze level with Scott’s. “I see you’ve put a lot of effort into this,” he said sincerely. “The shape is unique, and I bet it’ll go fast.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Scott's eyes were wide open, surprised and doubtful.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The race began, and Scott’s car sped down the track.

C 9. D 10. B 11. A

根据第二段“Those Cinderella stories fall into two main groups. In one, the focus is on the ball, while comparatively little attention is paid to the supernatural force that helps her. This is the type most familiar to us and most commonly found in western Europe. In those found in eastern Europe, much attention is paid to the helpful animals. D
Last year, global investment in wind and solar energy was greater than the money spent on new and existing coal and gas power plants for the first time.
C 13. D 14. A 15. B
根据第二段“One problem is the time-consuming process of obtaining permits. Endless delays have long been a barrier to new projects in America and Europe. The gains from shortening the process can be huge. The International Energy Agency(IEA) estimates that renewable power would rise by an extra 25% by 2027 if such barriers were removed.(一个问题是获得许可证的过程很耗时。在美国和欧洲,无休止的拖延一直是新项目的障碍。缩短这一过程的收益可能是巨大的。国际能源署(IEA)估计,如果消除这些障碍,到2027年,可再生能源将再增长25%。)”可推知,从第二段可以得知可再生能源发展潜力巨大。故选C项。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段中“The bigger problem is that some renewables providers are now rethinking their investments altogether, because green energy projects are becoming less attractive. Between January 2021 and April 2024, the prices of everything from shipping to industrial metals rose remarkably, which in turn raised the prices of solar and wind energy systems. Higher interest rates have become a headache for builders of green power plants, which are much hungrier for loans than power plants fueled by coal and gas.(更大的问题是,一些可再生能源供应商现在正在重新考虑他们的投资,因为绿色能源项目的吸引力正在下降。从2021年1月到2024年4月,从航运到工业金属的所有价格都大幅上涨,这反过来又提高了太阳能和风能系统的价格。较高的利率已经成为绿色发电厂建设者的头疼之事,与燃煤和天然气发电厂相比,绿色发电厂更需要贷款。)”可知,第三段主要讲的是可再生能源供应商的利润下降。故选D项。
【14题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第四段中“From America to Asia, wind developers are trying to renegotiate financing deals, delaying construction or canceling contracts because some projects have become unprofitable. In America, many solar projects are postponed, and in Europe, fewer agreements to buy the power they generate are being signed.(从美国到亚洲,风能开发商正试图重新谈判融资协议,推迟建设或取消合同,因为一些项目已经无利可图。在美国,许多太阳能项目被推迟,而在欧洲,购买太阳能发电的协议也越来越少。)”由此可知,此处为所有这些障碍都堵塞了项目的发展。由此可知,划线短语clogging up为“堵塞”的意思,和A选项Blocking“阻挡”意思相近。故选A项。
根据最后一段“Studies have shown that if investing is to stay attractive, green power will need to be sold at higher prices than governments would like.(研究表明,如果要保持投资的吸引力,绿色能源就需要以高于政府期望的价格出售。)”

There’s no shortage of tricks for improving mental health. But many of them are not yet well understood. Here are some of the tried-and-true things that you can turn to.
___16___
Surely it is not surprising that getting outside is first on this list. There’s strong evidence that it really can help reduce stress and improve mood. For example, researchers have found that looking at complex patterns found in flowers, mountains, ocean waves and other elements of nature can lead to more a-waves in your brain that are associated with relaxation. ___17___ . For instance, you can open a window to let in fresh air or use nature-inspired scents (气味).
Tidy up your space
Getting organized won’t help with serious depression. ___18___ . In addition, it can also enhance your productivity at the office and greatly improve the quality of your life if you can learn how to declutter and become organized.
Plan a trip
Taking a vacation is not a new idea when it comes to boosting your mental health. But what if you don’t have the means or the time? ___19___. Research shows that anticipating a trip can increase a person’s happiness.
Go for a bike ride
Of course, any kind of exercise is good for your mental health. But researchers say that bike riding is one of the best physical activities you can do to feel better. ___20___ .
A. Spend more time in nature
B. Put these tips into practice immediately
C. But it can make a difference for your mental health
D. Maybe it’s time to start planning a trip to one of the hot spots
E. Well, it turns out that even just planning a vacation can help a lot
F. If you’re unable to get outdoors, there are still helpful things you can do
G. Those who just cycle once a week report much higher levels of mental well-being
A 17. F 18. C 19. E 20. G
下文“Surely it is not surprising that getting outside is first on this list. There’s strong evidence that it really can help reduce stress and improve mood.(毫无疑问,出门在外是这个列表中的第一项。有强有力的证据表明,它确实可以帮助减轻压力,改善情绪。)”说明本段所给建议为出门接触自然,这样可以帮助减轻压力,改善情绪。所以A项“多花时间在大自然中”适合作本段的主旨句,统领全段。故选A。
下文“For instance, you can open a window to let in fresh air or use nature-inspired scents (气味).(例如,你可以打开窗户让新鲜空气进来,或者使用一些源于自然的香味)”说明即使不能出门也可以做的与自然相关的事情。
上文“Getting organized won’t help with serious depression.(整理有序并不会对严重的抑郁有所帮助)”以及下文“In addition, it can also enhance your productivity at the office and greatly improve the quality of your life if you can learn how to declutter and become organized.(此外,如果你能学会整理和变得有条理,它还可以提高你在办公室的生产力,并极大地改善你的生活质量)”说明整理有序虽然不会对严重的抑郁症有帮助,但是却对心理健康有积极影响。
上文“Of course, any kind of exercise is good for your mental health. But researchers say that bike riding is one of the best physical activities you can do to feel better.(休假对于提升心理健康来说并不是一个新主意。但如果你没有条件或者时间呢?)”以及下文“Research shows that anticipating a trip can increase a person's happiness.(研究表明,预测旅行可以增加一个人的幸福感)”说明即使没有时间或手段也可以通过计划旅行来提升心理健康。
上文“But researchers say that bike riding is one of the best physical activities you can do to feel better.(但研究人员说,骑自行车是你可以做的最好的身体活动之一,可以让你感觉更好)”说明骑自行车对心理健康是有好处的。

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Scott's eyes were wide open, surprised and doubtful.

The race began, and Scott’s car sped down the track.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Scott’s eyes were wide open, surprised and doubtful. “But... but it’s not as good as the others. The front axle is bent,” he stammered. Mark gently patted his shoulder and said, “Don’t worry. Sometimes, the most special things are a bit different. Let’s see what we can do about that axle.” Mark spent the next few minutes carefully straightening the axle with a small tool he happened to have in his pocket. As he worked, he chatted with Scott, sharing some simple tips on car making. Scott listened intently, his shyness gradually replaced by excitement.
The race began, and Scott’s car sped down the track. To everyone’s astonishment, it was one of the fastest. Scott jumped up and down, his face beaming with joy. He looked around and found Mark in the crowd, giving him a big thumbs-up. After the race, Scott rushed towards Mark. “Mr. Mark, thank you so much! I couldn’t have done it without you,” he said, his voice filled with gratitude. Mark smiled and replied, “You did all the hard work, Scott. I just saw the potential in you and your car.” From that day on, Scott no longer felt alone. Mark became a father-figure to him, and their bond grew stronger with each passing day.
