Who might be interested in going mountain bike races are always eager to find riding opportunities in the winter where events are hard to find. The swiss sporting centre has a huge network of snowbiking trails as well as facilities for hosting large international winter sporting events, newcomers to the sport. Maybe wondering what a snowbiking looks like. There are three varieties of snowbiking, but they all have wider tires than street bikes. Most people are familiar with the mountain bike, or M, T, B, which has the narrow, was tired at about six centimeters. Bad bikes were introduced in twenty fourteen with tires as wide as nearly twelve centimeters. These wide tires are suitable for snowy conditions, but they aren't suitable for street riding. Bad bike lovers needed a bike for all seasons. One year later, the mid fat bike or mountain bike plus hit the market for on road and off road conditions. The snow bike festival is attended by both watchers and bike lovers. The festival gives bike companies a chance to exhibit new products. It is absolutely the case in Turkey where garbage collectors started collecting books that have been thrown away and ended up opening a library. It started when garbage man Durson Ipek found a bag of abandoned books when he was working and then it snowballed from there. Ipek and other garbage men started gathering the books they found on the streets that were ready for landfills (垃圾填埋地) and as their collection started to grow, so did word of mouth. Soon, local residents started donating books directly. The library was initially available only to the garbage employees and their families to use but as the collection grew, so did public interest and the library was opened to the public in 2017. “On the one hand, there were those who were leaving these books on the streets. On the other hand, others were looking for these books,” Ankaya mayor Alper Tasdelen told CNN. “We started to discuss the idea of creating a library from these books. When everyone supported it, this project happened.” All the books that are found are sorted and checked for condition. If they pass, they go on the shelves. Today, the library has over 6,000 books that range from fiction to nonfiction and there’s a very popular children’s section that even has a collection of comic books. An entire section is devoted to scientific research and there are also books available in English and French. The collection has grown so large that the library loans books to schools and educational programs. “Village school teachers from all over Turkey are requesting books,” Tasdelen told CNN. The government has to hire a full-time employee to administrate the library. This library is incredibly popular. It is frequently filled with the children of the city’s workers and students from nearby schools. There is a waiting room set up for readers and chess boards for the people who visit the library. You can even enjoy a cup of tea in the waiting room. 24. What can we infer from paragraph 2? A. Every citizen was accessible to the library at the beginning. B. The collection of abandoned books drew few people’s attention. C. The abandoned books would have gone to waste without the garbage men. D. Local residents made little contribution to the collection of abandoned books. 25. What do we know about the library of abandoned books? A. It features books of scientific research. B. It has an entire section of books in English and French. C. Schools and educational programs have access to the books. D. Books need to be sorted and checked for condition before being donated. 26. Why does the government have to hire a full-time employee? A. To make sure that the books in the library won’t be stolen. B. To advertise the library to more Turkish villages. C. To meet the demands from educational programs. D. To help arrange donated books in the correct order. 27. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. Popularity of the library of abandoned books in Turkey. B. Reasons why the library of abandoned books was founded. C. Benefits of the library of abandoned books to Turkish citizens. D. People’s high demand for books on the library of abandoned books. C Self-confidence is trusting in our abilities or qualities. It’s usually seen as a good thing. But is it possible that we might benefit from a little less confidence in our beliefs? For many years, Dr. Mark Leary, a neuroscientist at Duke University in Durham, N.C. , has studied the role of people’s beliefs in their behavior. He found overconfidence is very common, especially when it comes to what people believe to be true, and can lead us to disastrous decisions. In 1986, NASA believed that the risk of loss for any space flight was roughly 1 in 100,000. It was an overconfident belief and might have led to the explosion of the Challenger. The good news is that there’s a “vaccine (疫苗)” for overconfidence, and that’s what scientists call “intellectual humility”— recognizing that your beliefs could be wrong. A survey of 144 college students to measure their intellectual humility found that students who saw their thinking could be wrong tended to be more curious and more likely to seek out new knowledge. They ended up knowing more at the end of the day. But does it actually help you beyond that? To find out more, Dr. Tenelle Porter at Ball State University conducted a series of studies with high school students. She found that students with intellectual humility were much more likely to test themselves to see whether they really understood the material and seek out potential holes in their understanding. When they got test scores, they’d change their study strategics to improve their performance and master the material for the next test. Students who didn’t see their knowledge could be wrong might instead just sail through their studying and wouldn’t stop to ask themselves if they truly understood what they read, heard, or did. Such students thought they got a subject down pat, but when asked to explain it on a test, they found they didn’t actually understand as much as they had thought. Although it might be good for you, researchers recognize that questioning your beliefs can be truly hard. Still, it’s important to remember that questioning beliefs isn’t always about replacing old ones with new ones. If you find it hard to question a belief, try taking “baby steps.” 28. Why does the author mention the explosion of the Challenger? A. To express his sorrow for the loss. B. To stress the high risk of space flights. C. To show the result of wrong operation. D. To give an example of overconfidence. 29. What do we know about intellectual humility according to Porter’s research? A. It urged students to gain recognition. B. It encouraged students to take exams. C. It helped students to adjust learning methods. D. It motivated students to memorize knowledge. 30. What do the underlined words “got a subject down pat” mean in paragraph 5? A. Fully mastered a subject. B. Put great effort into a subject C. Really enjoyed a subject. D. Benefited a lot from a subject. 31. What will probably be discussed in the following paragraphs? A. Why questioning our belief is hard. B. Why intellectual humility is helpful. C. How to become a confident person. D. How to practice intellectual humility. D The ability to detect a nearby presence without seeing or touching it may sound fantastical — but it’s a real ability that some creatures have. A family of African fish known as Mormyrids are weakly electric, and have special organs that can locate a nearby target, even when it’s hiding in the mud. Scientists have now developed an artificial sensor system modelled on the ability of these fish. “We developed a new strategy for 3D motion positioning by electronic skin, bio-inspired by ‘electric fish’,” says Dr. Xinge Yu, an associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the City University of Hong Kong. The team described their e-skin sensor in a paper published on November 14 in Nature. The artificial sensor is multi-layered. One layer acts as a transmitter (发射器), which will generate an electric field once activated, and another layer acts as a receiver to detect both the direction and the distance to an object. A separate controller creates the driving signal to activate the transmitter. When an object comes within range, the electric field around the sensor is disrupted (扰乱), which in turn can be detected by the receiver. This data is then processed by a microcontroller unit, which computes the position of the target object and sends that information to a smartphone or other devices. A special biogel (生物凝胶) is used in the sensor, which has the ability to transmit and receive electric signals from a pattern of microchannels on the surface. The end result is a sensor that is thin, soft and flexible, making it cosy to adapt to irregular surfaces, such as the human body. In contrast to the traditional sensor system that needs a large number of sensors to achieve spatial positioning, the new system can locate an object precisely in 3D space using just a few sensors. This significantly reduces the power consumption of data collection, transmission, and processing. The researchers hope that this sensor could one day open up a new range of wearable technologies, including sensors for human-machine interaction and thin, flexible e-skin. 32. The first paragraph aims to show __________. A. the special ability of African fish B. the inspiration for a new invention C. the big challenge of locating objects D. the reason for developing a sensor 33. What is the correct order of the system’s working procedures? a. The transmitter creates an electric field. b. A unit computes the position of the target. c. The controller sends the activating signal. d. The receiver detects the change of electric signals. e. The electric field is disrupted by an approaching object. A. c-a-e-d-b. B. c-a-d-e-b. C. a-c-e-d-b. D. a-e-c-d-b. 34. What is an advantage of the new sensor system? A. Its sensitivity to different stimulations. B. Its adaptation to environmental changes. C. Its efficiency in achieving 3D positioning. D. Its speed in data collection and processing. 35. What is the best title for the text? A. Machine Detective “Wears” Flexible E-skin B. Bio-inspired Sensor “Feels” Without Touching C. E-Skin Sensor: The Future of Machine Learning D. Electric Fields: The Frontier of Object Detection Recent research suggests that if an argument gets resolved, the emotional response tied to it is significantly reduced or almost completely erased. ___36___ There is a difference between arguing and fighting. Arguing is that you and your opponent present your concerns and discuss the feelings and issues related to those concerns. ___37___ Fighting, however, usually involves personal attacks, raising of voices, and storming out. ___38___ In a study, 2,000 people were asked to record their feelings and experiences for eight days in a row. When people had an argument that they considered resolved, they had half the reactivity (情绪反应) of those who avoided an argument. Reactivity is an increase in negative emotions or a decrease in positive emotions. ___39___ One day later, people who had a resolved argument reported no increase of negative emotions compared with those who avoided an argument. This means that resolving an argument can feel like you have reached a state of resolution - and you are less likely to be annoyed. Moreover, the older you are, the more likely you will come to a resolution after an argument. ___40___ You are more likely to distinguish between what matters and what does not. It is easier to avoid a discussion, but risking talking about it may eventually lead to a better outcome. A. It will do great harm to our mental health if not treated properly. B. In other words, resolving an argument cuts your negative feelings by half. C. Unfortunately, we are always unaware of the importance of the art of talk. D. You can engage in an argument respectfully without stirring up (激起) anger. E. This may be because more life experience usually leads to more defined priorities. F. Discussing your issues and resolving them instead of stuffing them down can improve your emotional health. G. Thus, it may be worth bringing up issues with your friends, family members or classmates rather than holding them back. 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) People living in the city often rush about their daily lives, barely noticing those around them. So they went shopping at the market where everything was of high cost and fixed price. They wanted to maintain their level of standard so they didn’t mind paying for it. After purchasing all they needed, they called a porter to carry everything and drop it at their home. The porter who came was of an old age, and looked very unhealthy, and his clothes were torn, and he looked as if he wasn’t even able to meet his daily needs. They asked the porter about the charges for delivering their goods to their home. The old porter quoted just $20, well below the market price. Yet, the couple argued and bargained with the porter and finally settled for $15. The porter was struggling to make even one time’s meal so he needed anything he could earn. The couple was very happy thinking how well they bargained with the poor porter and paid him $15 in advance and left after giving the porter their address for delivery. They reached their home and one hour passed, and two hours passed, but the porter still didn’t deliver their stuff. The wife started to get angry at her husband, “I always tell you not to trust such person, but you never listen to me. I am sure instead of delivering the goods to our home, he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire and then to the police station to file the complaint against him.” They both left towards the market. On their way near the market, they saw another porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter and noticed that he was carrying their goods in his cart! The angry wife asked him, “Where is that old thief ? The Mountain Bike Plus. 【答案】17. C 18. B 19. B 20. A 【解析】 【原文】 The Swiss Alps are known for their good ski runs, but they are also home to the Snow Bike Festival. This year, the third annual festival will take place from January 19th to January 22nd. Who might be interested in going? Mountain bike racers are always eager to find riding opportunities in the winter, where events are hard to find. The Swiss Sporting Center has a huge network of snow biking trails, as well as facilities for hosting large international winter sporting events. Newcomers to the sport may be wondering what a snow bike looks like. There are three varieties of snow bikes, but they all have wider tires than street bikes. Most people are familiar with the mountain bike, or MTB, which has the narrowest tires, at about 6 centimeters. Fat Bikes were introduced in 2014, with tires as wide as nearly 12 centimeters. These wide tires are suitable for snowy conditions, but they aren’t suitable for street riding. Fat Bike lovers needed a bike for all seasons. One year later, the mid Fat Bike, or Mountain Bike Plus, hit the market for on-road and off-road conditions. The Snow Bike Festival is attended by both watchers and bike lovers. The festival gives bike companies a chance to exhibit new products. If the 2017 Snow Bike Festival is as popular as the previous two, you may want to include the bike festival in your Swiss ski adventure plans. 第二部分 阅读理解 (共两节,满分50分) 第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D 四个选项中选出最佳选项。 A England and France Tour PRIVATE CAR/MINIBUS — 5 DAYS ABOUT THE TOUR Your guide will take you on a 3-hour panoramic (全景的) tour of London upon airport pickup. 【答案】24. C 25. C 26. C 27. A 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇记叙文。本文讲述了土耳其人民如何变废为宝,将遗弃的书籍收集起来并建立起一座广受好评的图书馆的故事。 【24题详解】 推理判断题。 根据文章第二段“Ipek and other garbage men started gathering the books they found on the streets that were ready for landfills (垃圾填埋地) and as their collection started to grow, so did word of mouth. (Ipek和其他垃圾工开始收集他们在街上发现的准备填埋的书籍,随着他们的收藏不断增加,口碑也开始传播)”可知,如果没有这些垃圾工,这些书籍就会被废弃。故选C。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“The collection has grown so large that the library loans books to schools and educational programs. (藏书量如此之大,以至于图书馆将书籍借给学校和教育项目)”可知,学校和教育项目可以借阅这些书籍。故选C。 【26题详解】 推理判断题。 根据文章第五段“Village school teachers from all over Turkey are requesting books,”Tasdelen told CNN. The government has to hire a full-time employee to administrate the library. (塔斯德伦告诉CNN:“来自土耳其各地的乡村学校老师都在索要书籍”,因此政府不得不雇用一名全职员工来管理这家图书馆)”可知,政府雇用全职员工是为了满足教育项目的需求。故选C。 【27题详解】 主旨大意题。根据最后一段“This library is incredibly popular. It is frequently filled with the children of the city’s workers and students from nearby schools.( 这个图书馆非常受欢迎。它经常挤满了城市工人孩子和附近学校的学生)”可知,文章从垃圾收集者收集废书并创办图书馆开始,介绍了这一项目如何变得十分成功和受欢迎,满足了市民和学校对书籍的需求。因此,文章的主要内容是关于土耳其废弃图书图书馆的受欢迎程度。故选A。 C Self-confidence is trusting in our abilities or qualities. 29 What do we know about intellectual humility according to Porter’s research? A. It urged students to gain recognition. B. It encouraged students to take exams. C. It helped students to adjust learning methods. D. It motivated students to memorize knowledge. 30. What do the underlined words “got a subject down pat” mean in paragraph 5? A Fully mastered a subject. D 29. C 30. A 31. 根据第二段第二至第四句“He found overconfidence is very common, especially when it comes to what people believe to be true, and can lead us to disastrous decisions. In 1986, NASA believed that the risk of loss for any space flight was roughly 1 in 100,000. It was an overconfident belief and might have led to the explosion of the Challenger. 根据第四段第二、三句“She found that students with intellectual humility were much more likely to test themselves to see whether they really understood the material and seek out potential holes in their understanding. When they got test scores, they’d change their study strategics to improve their performance and master the material for the next test. (她发现,智力谦逊的学生更有可能去检验自己是否真正理解了学习材料,并寻找自己理解上的漏洞。当他们看到考试成绩时,他们会调整学习策略,以提高学习表现,并掌握好材料为下一次考试做准备)”可知,智力谦逊这种特质会使学生及时反思自己的学习,相应调整学习方法。故选C项。 【30题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第五段第二句“Such students thought they got a subject down pat, but when asked to explain it on a test, they found they didn’t actually understand as much as they had thought. (这些学生以为自己对某个科目got down pat,但在考试中被要求解释时,他们发现自己的理解并没有自己想象的那么多)”可知,学生们在考试之前应是对自己比较自信,认为自己对该相关知识十分了解,或已经全会了,但到考场答题时,才发现自己会的不如原本所认为的那么多。由此可知,got a subject down pat应是“对某科目了解很多”或“对某科目完全掌握”之意。故选A项。 根据第二段最后一句“The good news is that there’s a “vaccine (疫苗)” for overconfidence, and that’s what scientists call “intellectual humility”— recognizing that your beliefs could be wrong. (好消息是,过度自信有一种“疫苗”,科学家称之为“智力谦逊”——即认识到你的信念可能是错误的)”及全文最后一句“If you find it hard to question a belief, try taking “baby steps.” (如果你觉得很难质疑一种信念,可以尝试迈出“一小步”)”可知,最后一句中所说的“question a belief”即前文所说的“recognizing that your beliefs could be wrong”,也就是第二段最后一句引号中所言的“智力谦逊”。全文最后一句又说,“可以尝试迈出‘一小步’”。由此推知,所谓的“一小步”究竟该怎么做,会在下文进行介绍,即如何练习做到“智力谦虚”。故选D项。 D The ability to detect a nearby presence without seeing or touching it may sound fantastical — but it’s a real ability that some creatures have. 根据第一段中“A family of African fish known as Mormyrids are weakly electric, and have special organs that can locate a nearby target, even when it’s hiding in the mud. Scientists have now developed an artificial sensor system modelled on the ability of these fish. 根据第三段内容“The artificial sensor is multi-layered. 故选A项。 根据倒数第二段中“In contrast to the traditional sensor system that needs a large number of sensors to achieve spatial positioning, the new system can locate an object precisely in 3D space using just a few sensors. This significantly reduces the power consumption of data collection, transmission, and processing. (与需要大量传感器来实现空间定位的传统传感器系统相比,新系统可以使用几个传感器在3D空间中精确定位物体。这大大降低了数据收集、传输和处理的功耗)”可知,新传感器系统在实现3D定位方面的效率更高,大大降低了数据收集、传输和处理的功耗,由此可知,新传感器系统的优点是它在实现3D定位方面的效率更高。故选C项。 【35题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段中“A family of African fish known as Mormyrids are weakly electric, and have special organs that can locate a nearby target, even when it’s hiding in the mud. Scientists have now developed an artificial sensor system modelled on the ability of these fish. Recent research suggests that if an argument gets resolved, the emotional response tied to it is significantly reduced or almost completely erased. E This may be because more life experience usually leads to more defined priorities. F. Discussing your issues and resolving them instead of stuffing them down can improve your emotional health. G. Thus, it may be worth bringing up issues with your friends, family members or classmates rather than holding them back. G 37. D 38. F 39. B 40. 【36题详解】 根据前文“Recent research suggests that if an argument gets resolved, the emotional response tied to it is significantly reduced or almost completely erased. (最近的研究表明,如果争论得到解决,与之相关的情绪反应会显著减少或几乎完全消除。)”可知,G项“Thus, it may be worth bringing up issues with your friends, family members or classmates rather than holding them back. (因此,把问题告诉你的朋友、家人或同学,而不是把问题憋在心里)”和前文构成因果关系,并点出主题。故选G项。 【37题详解】 根据前文“There is a difference between arguing and fighting. Arguing is that you and your opponent present your concerns and discuss the feelings and issues related to those concerns. (争论和吵架是有区别的。争论是你和你的对手提出你的担忧,并讨论与这些担忧相关的感受和问题。)”以及后文“Fighting, however, usually involves personal attacks, raising of voices, and storming out. (然而,吵架通常包括人身攻击、提高嗓门和冲出去。)”可知,本段主要讲述争论和吵架的区别,后文介绍了吵架,所以空处应是继续说明争论,D项“You can engage in an argument respectfully without stirring up (激起) anger. (你可以谦恭地参与争论,而不会激起愤怒。)”符合本段主题,承接上文,引出下文。故选D项。 【38题详解】 设空位于段首,为本段中心句,根据后文“In a study, 2,000 people were asked to record their feelings and experiences for eight days in a row. When people had an argument that they considered resolved, they had half the reactivity (情绪反应) of those who avoided an argument. Reactivity is an increase in negative emotions or a decrease in positive emotions. (在一项研究中,2000人被要求连续8天记录他们的感受和经历。当人们发生了一场他们认为已经解决的争论时,他们的情绪反应是那些避免争论的人的一半。情绪反应是消极情绪的增加或积极情绪的减少。)”可知,本段主要讲述讨论你的问题并解决它们可以改善你的情绪健康,所以F项“Discussing your issues and resolving them instead of stuffing them down can improve your emotional health. (讨论你的问题并解决它们,而不是把它们塞满,可以改善你的情绪健康。)”符合本段主题,为本段中心句。故选F项。 【39题详解】 根据后文“One day later, people who had a resolved argument reported no increase of negative emotions compared with those who avoided an argument. This means that resolving an argument can feel like you have reached a state of resolution - and you are less likely to be annoyed. (一天后,与那些避免争吵的人相比,那些解决了争吵的人的负面情绪并没有增加。这意味着解决一场争论会让你觉得你已经达到了解决问题的状态,而且你不太可能被惹恼)”可知,此处是在讲述解决一场争吵能让你的负面情绪减半,所以B项“In other words, resolving an argument cuts your negative feelings by half. (换句话说,解决一场争吵能让你的负面情绪减半。)”是对前文的另一种解释,并引出下文。故选B项。 【40题详解】 根据前文“Moreover, the older you are, the more likely you will come to a resolution after an argument. (此外,年龄越大,你越有可能在争吵后找到解决办法。)”可知,本段讲述年龄越大越有可能在争吵后找到解决办法,所以E项“This may be because more life experience usually leads to more defined priorities. (这可能是因为更多的生活经验通常会导致更明确的优先事项。)”是对前句的解释,符合本段主题。故选E项。 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) People living in the city often rush about their daily lives, barely noticing those around them. This is our goods.” She was about to add more contemptuous comments on the old porter when she suddenly noticed that the man was glaring at her resentfully. “Madam, please calm down. Jack is not a thief!” retorted the porter, “He is actually terribly ill and isn’t able to earn enough to even have a single meal of the day. Just now, on the way to deliver your stuff, he was too weak to go any further in this heat of the noon. Even after collapsing, he never forgot his promise, handed me $15 and kept urging me to deliver it as fast as possible.” Upon hearing that, the husband had tears in his eyes and turned to his wife. “Honey, we truly misunderstood such an honest man. We owe him a sincere apology,” regretted the husband, seeking his wife’s advice. But then came a silence for a while. The wife stood there embarrassed, her face flushing with guilt. She had never realized such a poor man should be so honest and responsible. With a quivering voice, the wife sincerely apologized and decided to visit Jack at once. As the wealthy couple disappeared into the distance, the porter watched them go with a smile and continued his work under the sun. 词汇激活 行为类: ①递给:hand/give ②意识到:realize/be aware 情绪类: ①愤怒地:resentfully/furiously ②尴尬的:embarrassed/awkward ③愧疚:guilt/compunction 【点睛】[高分句型1] She was about to add more contemptuous comments on the old porter when she suddenly noticed that the man was glaring at her resentfully.(that引导的宾语从句) [高分句型2] The wife stood there embarrassed, her face flushing with guilt.
