On December 14th, 1911, Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen stood at the southernmost point of Earth, planting his nation’s flag atop the icy vastness of Antarctica (南极). His historic achievement marked the victory of a fierce yet silent race against British rival Robert Falcon Scott, reflecting thoughtful planning and courageous ambition.
Amundsen’s success relied mainly on considerate preparation. While Scott relied on ponies (小马)and motorized sledges, Amundsen embraced Inuit wisdom, using sled dogs adaptable well to the polar conditions. These helpful animals carried supplies efficiently and even provided food when needed — an unpleasant but practical solution in the unforgiving environment. His team practiced skiing strictly and wore layered fur clothing to fight against temperatures below -40℃. Every detail, from lightweight sledges to a carefully mapped supply depot system, was optimized for survival.
The journey was austere. Battling freezing coldness and endless ice, Amundsen’s team covered 1,400 miles across frozen deserts. When they reached the Pole, they left a tent and a letter for Scott — a gesture connecting sportsmanship and quiet success. Tragically, Scott and his men failed to make the return journey, showing the high risks of polar exploration.
Beyond great glory, Amundsen’s expedition transformed polar science. His detailed records of weather, ice formations, and navigation techniques advanced human understanding of Antarctica. Innovations in cold-weather equipment and travel methods became foundation for future explorers. Amundsen proved that in the battle between humans and nature, respect for tradition and adaptability were keys to victory, which inspired generations to explore further.
4. What was the primary reason for Amundsen’s success over Scott in reaching the South Pole?
A. Superior physical strength of his team.
B. Warmer weather conditions during his expedition.
C. Advanced motorized technology for transportation.
D. Strategic use of Inuit survival methods and sled dogs.
5. What does the underlined word “austere” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Tough. B. Unpleasant. C. Amusing. D. Endless.
6. Which words can best describe Amundsen?
A. Ambitious and cautious. B. Adventurous and modest.
C. Responsible and strict. D. Independent and confident.
7. How did Amundsen’s expedition contribute to future polar exploration?
A. It popularized the use of ponies in icy regions.
B. It discouraged further expeditions due to its risks.
C. It focused solely on national glory rather than research.
D. It provided scientific data and improved survival techniques.

Climate change leads to threat to the world’s sandy beaches, and as many as half of them could disappear by 2100,a new study has found. Even by 2050 some coastlines could be hard to make out from what we see today, with 10% to 12% facing serious erosion (侵蚀).
Using updated sea level rise predictions, the researchers analyzed how beaches around the world would be in a future with higher seas and more damaging storms. They also considered natural processes like wave erosion, as well as human factors - like coastal building developments, all of which can affect a beach’ s health. The study found that sea level rise is expected to outweigh these other factors, and if countries do not cut pollution quickly, rising seas could permanently destroy beaches and coastal towns in the near future. Additionally, the more greenhouse gases humans release into the air, the greater the negative impact on beaches worldwide will become.
It’s hard to overstate just how important the world’s beaches are. They cover more than one third of the world’s coastlines and protect coastal areas from storms. Beaches are also important economic engines, supporting relaxation, tourism and other activities. And in some areas, the beach is more than a vacation destination. In places like Australia, life near the coast surrounds the beach for much of the year.
Some of the world’s most popular beaches are already taking actions. Places like Miami Beach are bringing in large amounts of sand by truck to fix coastlines severely damaged by waves. Meanwhile, some areas have built protective walls to try to keep the sand from washing away. But scientists say the financial and environmental costs of these projects are huge, while rising seas, more powerful storms as well as a warmer climate may make this a losing battle.
However, the researchers did find that humans have some control over what happens to the world’s beaches. If the world’s governments can continue cutting greenhouse gas pollution, the researchers found that 22% of projected beach losses by 2050 could be prevented, a number that grows to 40% by 2100 if greenhouse gases are limited.
8. Which of the following mainly causes serious beach erosion?
A. Wave erosion. B. Human factors.
C. Damaging storms. D. Rising sea levels.
9. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. Storms damage one third of the world’s coastlines.
B. Significance of beaches can’t be underestimated.
C. Tourism may cause damage to beach conservation.
D. Beaches are the only economic engine for Australia.
10. How do scientists think of the actions taken to protect beaches?
A. Costly but ineffective. B. Efficient but not enough.
C. Influential but slow. D. Comprehensive but not sustainable.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. Actions have been taken to protect beaches.
B. Beaches are facing the threat of disappearing.
C. Life in coastal areas mainly relies on beaches.
D. There exist challenges to protect eroded beaches.

Spot — the four-legged Internet-famous robot dog well-known for opening doors, climbing steps with ease, and even taking clean dishes out of the dishwasher — has just landed a full-time job at an oil and gas company in Norway.
At some point this year, the Boston Dynamics robot will begin inspecting an Aker BP’s oil and gas production vessel (船) at the Skarv field in the Norwegian Sea, Bloomberg reports. There, it will examine the vessel carefully, look for oil and gas leaks (泄漏), and put together reports based on the data it collects.
Aker BP, which has spent large amounts of money digitizing(数字化)the oil and gas industry, wants to use Spot to make offshore operations safer, the company said during a presentation of the robot in Oslo today. According to Bloomberg, Aker BP will run the tests with software controlled by its parent company.
“These things never get tired. They have a greater ability to adapt(适应)and to collect data(数据),” Kjetel Digre, Aker BP’s Senior Vice President, told Bloomberg. CEO Karl Johnny Hersvik said that he was “pretty sure” more robots would finally join the operation in the future.
Aker BP has an agreement with an AI software company called Cognite(智能科技) to work out which task Spot is best suited to, and then use it in the wild. They’ve already tested Spot in simulated (模拟的) environments.
Boston Dynamics (动力学)has made Spot available for companies to employ since September 2019, and since then about 75 companies have used one. One is also working with the Massachusetts State Police bomb squad (爆破小组). Boston Dynamics said this won’t be the last time a robot dog lands a job. On its website, Boston Dynamics promotes(促进)Spot for use in construction, public safety, oil and gas applications, and even entertainment.
12. What will Spot do on an Aker BP’s oil and gas production vessel?
A. Help operate it.
B. Wash oil and gas pipes.
C. Check for anything wrong.
D. Test software controlling it.
13. What is the attitude of Aker BP’s leaders to robots like Spot?
A. Curious. B. Uncertain. C. Doubtful. D. Confident.
14. Why did Aker BP work with Cognite?
A. To develop Spot’s market.
B. To make Spot have more abilities.
C. To make sure Spot works well.
D. To work out software for Spot.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The wide use of robot dogs.
B. Aker BP’s plans for the future.
C. A growing need for robot dogs.
D. The promising future of Aker BP.

Poetry, with its rhythmic language and layered meanings, invites readers to explore emotions, ideas, and beauty beyond the literal. To fully engage with a poem, consider these methods to deepen your appreciation and understanding.
Read aloud for rhythm and sound
____16____ Read the poem aloud slowly. Notice the rhythm, rhymes, or repeating sounds. For example, Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven uses a tense beat, while Langston Hughes’ Dreams has a gentle flow. Do they sound cheerful, sad, or urgent? The “music” of a poem often mirrors its mood.
____17____
Understanding a poem’s historical, cultural, or biographical context enriches interpretation. It will help you a lot to find out when the poem was written or what the poet’s life was like. But don’t stress — even a quick Google search can add meaning.
Accept confusion
Poems don’t always have one right explanation. ____18____ Maybe Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18 is both a love poem and a joke about clichés (陈词滥调). Discuss with classmates — different views make poems more interesting! Let uncertainty spark curiosity.
Connect the poem to your life
Let your emotions guide your understanding. If a line reminds you of a personal experience, write down your thoughts or share them with a friend. ____19____ Poetry isn’t just about analysis — it’s about feeling and imagination.
Appreciating poetry is both an art and a practice — requiring attention to form, context, and personal reflection. As Eliot wrote, poetry “communicates before it is understood”, inviting us to return, rethink, and rediscover its magic endlessly. ____20____
A. Poems are meant to be heard.
B. Learn the background of the poem.
C. Compare poems by different authors.
D. Poetry is alive when it speaks to you.
E. Practice memorizing your favorite lines.
F. If a line feels puzzling, write down your guesses.

57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Preparing for the upcoming Christmas season was truly annoying. Schedules to meet and deadlines to attend were pounding at the doorstep. The stores were jam-packed with people. The freeways, highways, main roads, and back roads seemed to fill as quickly as the opening of Disneyland’s theme park.
This was supposedly the season of giving and loving. Something needed to change — but what?
Suddenly, a request from the local radio station playing in the background caught my attention. “This year, they’re forecasting a record for cold temperatures. The local homeless shelter is in desperate need of clothing — hats, scarves, and gloves especially. A three-day window has been set up to receive donations into the late hours of the night. ”
Something pulled at my heartstrings that very moment — a tinge of a feeling almost forgotten. This is the answer! I immediately thought. Then, as if flying on wings, I packed up my three-year-old son and headed out to the local discount store.
The crowds in the store didn’t change my determination. Four sets of hats, gloves, and scarves were found within a matter of minutes and purchased.
Back in the car the same radio station was playing holiday music, but this time it seemed to capture my senses. My attention was again brought to the present as my patient three-year-old son finally asked where we were going. I explained that certain people needed warm gloves, hats, and scarves. They didn’t live in a house of their own and needed us to help. His face held a look of puzzlement. How does one explain such a thing to a three-year-old?
My son carefully took his very first dollar bill from his pocket. It had been given to him a few days earlier — a possession so precious that if anyone even looked at it, he immediately retreated out of sight with the dollar in hand. It had become his priceless treasure.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
An hour later, we reached the entrance to the drop-off center.

【答案】4. D 5. A 6. B 7. D

【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“While Scott relied on ponies (小马)and motorized sledges, Amundsen embraced Inuit wisdom, using sled dogs adaptable well to the polar conditions. These helpful animals carried supplies efficiently and even provided food when needed — an unpleasant but practical solution in the unforgiving environment. His team practiced skiing strictly and wore layered fur clothing to fight against temperatures below -40℃. Every detail, from lightweight sledges to a carefully mapped supply depot system, was optimized for survival.(当Scott依靠小马和机动雪橇时,Amundsen则借鉴了因纽特人的智慧,使用了能很好适应极地环境的雪橇犬。

【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. B

第三节(满分25分)
Back in the car, the same radio station was playing holiday music, but this time it seemed to capture my senses.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文
Para. 1:
An hour later, we reached the entrance to the drop-off center. The line of cars wrapped around the block, but my heart was full of anticipation. My son clutched his dollar bill tightly in his hand, his face a mix of excitement and nervousness. As we got closer to the front, he quietly asked, “Mommy, are we really going to give away my dollar?” I smiled and nodded, explaining that together, our donations would help make someone’s Christmas warmer. Finally, we reached the front. My son hesitantly handed his dollar to the volunteer, his eyes wide with wonder. The volunteer smiled and thanked him, placing the dollar in a large box filled with other donations.
Para. 2:
With a wish of “Merry Christmas,” I turned to go back to the car. My son’s face was bright with pride and happiness. As we drove away, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of fulfillment. The radio station continued to play holiday music, but now it seemed even more cheerful and uplifting. I knew that we had done something special that day — not just for the homeless shelter, but for ourselves as well. The simple act of kindness had brought us both joy and a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas.
