At the time, the subway station was simply a proposal ___7___ (extend) Frankfurt’s subway system. Many of the local residents were concerned about the impact the construction and development ___8___ (have) on the community. The issue led to a fierce debate, with some people opposed to the project. While some residents still complained about the expansion of the subway network into their area, Pininski’s creative architecture won praise from many ___9___.It has even become a tourist attraction for people to shoot photos of themselves near what could be described ____10____ a work of art. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context. “Honesty is the best policy” is a common saying, but in many situations, people do not want to hear the truth. Whether it’s a fact of life that they ___21___ were otherwise or a criticism of their behavior, everyone has truths that they want to ignore. These truths are called truth bombs, especially when they are told in a ___22___ way. This comparison shows that truth can cause damage if not handled well. Sometimes we drop truth bombs out of anger. We may ___23___ our words by saying that we need to express our emotions or to help the other person change their ways. Truth bombs rarely lead to productive discussion because they cause a ___25___ reaction. The receiver may ___26___ the criticism or counter it with a truth bomb of their own. Truth bombs also often fail to represent the whole truth. Anger can make it difficult to see the big picture, leading to an ___27___ misrepresentation of the truth. Sometimes people do need to hear hard truths. Pretending that problems do not ___28___ can weaken trust just as much as dropping truth bombs can. (A) “______”, says our memory expert, Jonathan Hancock. There’s a lot to cope with when you go off to university, and the academic work is just the start. There are new friends to meet, new opportunities to choose between, new responsibilities to accept... and, for most students, a completely new city to explore. We recently drove our daughter Evie 150 miles to start life as a fresher. It was a struggle to find the car park, let alone wander through the web of hallways that led to her room. Before we left that evening, we’d taken her to the local supermarket, and we knew that she had flatmates and phone apps to get her orientated. But the scale of the challenge ahead was clear — to find her way in an unfamiliar world. The good news for Evie — and learners everywhere — is that exploring new habitats is hugely beneficial for memory In a recent study, volunteers walked around an artificial forest environment. Then some of them took the same walk again, while others explored a different forest. And that second group performed significantly better in memory tests straight after. According to the researchers, that was because exploring the new environment stimulated their dopamine system setting up their brains for learning. So leaving home to study for a degree makes perfect sense. What’s more, young minds seem to gain most from being in strange surroundings. But we may all be able to enjoy some of the benefits, even if it’s just by stimulating our senses and challenging our thinking skills. Here are three things to try: * Go somewhere new to tackle an upcoming learning task-like memorising a speech in the library, or revising for an exam on a park bench — and take an unfamiliar route to get there. * Play video games that get you moving through new landscapes. Then see whether it improves your success with other learning tasks like practising a dance or mastering phrases for a foreign trip. * Get lost in your imagination! To warm yourself up for learning, picture a city you know well, but imagine you’ re stranded in a part of it that you’ve never visited. Then try to visualise exactly how you’ll get out. 36. “______” in the first paragraph should be filled with ______. A. You’ll boost your brainpower if you brave the unknown B. You’ll unlock your amazing memory with the right visual aids C. You should have a consultation with a memory expert D. You can’t improve your memory without the external help 37. The writer shares the daughter’s story in the beginning to ______. A. put the readers in the center of the episode B. introduce the topic in an accessible way C. explain the complex concept through comparison D. remind people why they go to university 38. What can be inferred about the recent study? A. The researchers were not satisfied with the experiment result. B. The volunteers were chosen for their strong memory. C. Its purpose was to prove that leaving home to study makes sense. D. The conducted experiment confirmed the previous assumption. 39. What do the three recommended things have in common? A. They stimulate the senses through the visualization process. B. They require a high level of critical thinking ability. C. They involve venturing into unfamiliar places or new things. D. They emphasize the combination of learning with recreation. (B) HIGHLY COMMENDED CHARITY RSPCA Established, trustworthy, caring. FEMALE,40-49, WA ▂ Admire what they do for animals. For the moment, artificial intelligence isn’t making much of an impact on the daily lives of most British farmers. But the way AI can transform agriculture in the near future is very much a reality in universities and research labs. My eyes were opened to the possibilities on a visit to a lab where cows were being automatically monitored in an innovative ‘smart’ dairy. AI was learning to recognize each individual cow and log its behavior. It then analyzed the data to warn of any signs of illness. Meanwhile, in my home county, work is underway to ensure that the upcoming generation of farmers isn’t left behind. In a few weeks’ time, newly arrived students at the Royal Agricultural University (RAU) will start their course in Agricultural Technology, at the heart of which is AI’s role in making farming more effective, productive and adaptive in a world of changing weather patterns. This would have sounded like science fiction in the 1950s, but now, 70 years on, I’m encouraged that tomorrow’s farmers are being armed with the know-how to succeed in the new digital age. Naturally, there are concerns about what all this might mean for the countless number of people who depend on farming for their livelihood. Soft fruit and seasonal veg are extremely tender and need an army of pickers and packers who may find themselves replaced at some point by the sort of standard precision-robots that have been trialled on a strawberry farm. In recent years many places have struggled to employ and keep seasonal workers, so rather than create unemployment, AI might just provide the answer to a worrying labour gap. It’s worth saying that this technology will need a whole new set of workers to produce the hardware, input new data and then install, maintain, repair and replace systems and kit. So don’t despair but do consider upskilling. Since the Industrial Revolution, every generation of farmers has had to deal with the technological changes of the day and they have successfully adapted to survive. Who knows! AI may well turn out to be just the latest in a long line of challenges to be embraced by adaptable and spirited farmers. And anything that saves me the worry of checking the weather forecast day and night during harvest season must be a good thing. 43. What did the author discover during his visit to the lab? A. AI has made automation a reality in the dairy industry. B. AI has helped most British farmers to closely monitor cows. C. AI is being developed to improve cow health through behavior analysis. D. AI is primarily being used to transform universities and labs across Britain. 44. What is the focus of the course in Agricultural Technology at the RAU? A. The role of traditional methods in enhancing crop productivity. B. The development of AI in agricultural practices in the UK. C. The ways climate change affects global food security. D. The impact of AI on boosting farming efficiency and productivity. 45. What can be inferred about the introduction of AI in agriculture from the third and the fourth paragraphs? A. It will lead to widespread unemployment. B. It will eliminate the need for human labor completely. C. It may help address the labor shortage issue. D. It doesn’t affect the nature of seasonal workers. 46. What is the author’s attitude towards the use of AI in agriculture? A. Suspicious. B. Optimistic. C. Neutral. D. Concerned. Section C Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. Storytelling That Touches Hearts Carol Guzy is the recipient of PPA’s 2025 Humanitarian Award. With a career that spans four decades Guzy has documented humanitarian crises around the world, from the 2010 earthquake in Haiti to conflicts in the Middle East. ___47___ Eventually, with the stability that her career gave her, she was able to take a film photography class. When her first print developed in a darkroom tray, she says she experienced that “defining moment” people speak of when they’ve just discovered what they will spend the rest of their life pursuing. From there, Guzy took classes in photo journalism and secured newspaper traineeships while in school. For Guzy, photography has always been calling, not a job. ___48___ And in the age of misinformation, there is great power in a universal language we all can understand. Early in her career, Guzy was constantly on the move, which left her no time to process the harsh realities of the war zones and disasters she witnessed and photographed. Over time, the weight of those experiences led her to seek professional help to process the emotional impact of her work. ___49___” We’re not robots or walking cameras; we’re people,” she says. Guzy’s shocking images from battlefields and national disasters are raw yet filled with a sense of tenderness. Through her cameras, we witness the scene and think seriously about its implications. Guzy believes that to be a photojournalist is to “document the human condition in every form.” ___50___ For her, the images she captures are their own form of payment. A. Guzy says she discovered that being honest and sharing openly is the only way to lighten a burden no one should carry alone. B. She never hesitates to inform the public of complex social issues. C. “Storytelling is my oxygen,” she says. D. Growing up, Guzy’s family struggled to make ends meet, which led her to choose what she perceived as a sensible career: nursing. E. She feels lucky to have met amazing people during her travels and worked with so many great translators who help bridge communication gaps. F. For example, her work shows the pain of the disabled in a way that moves people. Ⅲ.summary writing 51. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. Urban Green Spaces: A Necessity, Not a Luxury Urban green spaces play a vital role in improving the quality of life in cities. Studies have shown the various benefits brought about by green spaces. For example, research from the University of Exeter found that people living near green spaces reported higher levels of happiness and life satisfaction. However, many cities are facing the challenge of preserving these spaces due to rapid urbanization. In some areas, parks are being replaced by commercial buildings or housing projects to meet the growing demand for space. Meanwhile, the tendency to cut funding for the maintenance of urban green spaces is becoming increasingly common. For example, in Liverpool, UK, budget cuts led to reduced maintenance in parks, with less frequent tree trimming and litter collection. These short-sighted approaches ignore the long-term benefits of green spaces, such as their ability to combat climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide and reducing urban heat. For instance, during heatwaves, urban areas with more greenery can be significantly cooler than those without, providing a natural solution to rising temperatures. Moreover, green spaces support biodiversity by providing habitats for wildlife, which are crucial for maintaining ecological balance. Cities like New York and London have demonstrated the value of green spaces. Central Park in New York serves as a vital green lung for millions of residents, offering recreational areas, supporting biodiversity, and improving the city’s overall environment. Similarly, London’s Hyde Park is a hub for community events, jogging, and cycling, contributing to the city’s cultural and social life. These examples highlight how green spaces can enhance urban living while addressing environmental challenges. It is high time that governments acknowledged the significance of investing in the preservation of green spaces. Only by integrating green spaces into city designs can we create truly habitable and sustainable urban environments, ensuring that every resident has access to nature. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Ⅳ.Translation Directions: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets. 52. 这条骑行路线沿海岸线绵延约560公里,提供多种难度级别。(stretch)(汉译英) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 53. 人性化的设计和功能使这些环保型家居用品备受欢迎。(What)(汉译英) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 54. 更新后的招生政策彰显了这所大学在提升学生群体质量和多样性上的不懈努力。(evidence)(汉译英) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 55. 恰如古语所云,未曾领略冬之凛冽,无法感知春之和煦,这体现了冬去春来、季节交替的真谛。(correspond)(汉译英) ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Ⅴ.Guided Writing 56. I’m writing to express my preference for the Traditional Handicraft Workshop among the “Cultural Inheritance and Innovation” activities. I choose this workshop mainly because it offers a hands - on experience. In today’s digital age, traditional handicrafts are gradually fading away. By participating in this workshop, under the guidance of professionals, we students can create handicrafts on - site. This not only allows us to understand the charm of traditional handicrafts better but also helps us inherit these precious skills. Also, the time from 18:30 - 20:30 on Friday is quite suitable for us students. After a day of study, this activity can be a relaxing yet meaningful way to end the day. I believe the Traditional Handicraft Workshop will be a great success in promoting cultural inheritance and innovation. Yours, Li Hua 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
