(2024·湖南长沙高二下学期开学考)Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is America's fifth largest city. Once a major American colonial city, it is the home of America's first library, its first hospital, and its first zoo. Now it is also the first U.S. city to be named a World Heritage City. On November 6, 2015, Philadelphia joined more than 260 other cities that have been recognized for their influence on the world. These cities include Paris, France, Florence, Italy, and Cairo, Egypt.
The exciting news was announced by Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, Deputy Mayor Alan Greenberger, responsible for economic development and business guidance, and the Global Philadelphia Association. “Today marks the start of a new and exciting chapter in the history of Philadelphia,” remarked Nutter when the announcement was made. “As a World Heritage City, Philadelphia is being officially recognized on the global stage for its wealth of contributions to the world.”
To be named a World Heritage City, a city must be home to a UNESCO World Heritage site. UNESCO World Heritage sites are selected for their universal value and significance. For Philadelphia, the site is Independence Hall.
Independence Hall is where two of the most important documents in U.S. history—the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution—were adopted. The Declaration of Independence, approved on July 4, 1776, united the 13 former British colonies and declared them independent from British rule. From then on, a democratic and free country was born, which changed the course of world history. The U.S. Constitution, signed in 1787, established the American democratic system of government. A democracy is a system of government in which the people elect their leaders. The Constitution later spelled out the basic freedoms American citizens have.
Greenberger says the city's selection as a World Heritage City also reflects its educational, cultural, and economic achievements. The city is home to dozens of colleges and universities, and many museums, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art. “Philadelphia has rightfully earned its place as one of the greatest cities in the world. As we celebrate this milestone, we will focus even more on improving Philadelphia's status as a World Heritage City to attract more guests to visit, invest, work, study and live here,” Greenberger says.
4.We can learn from paragraph 1 that Philadelphia ________.
A.has the best American hospitals
B.contributed a lot to the global economy

D.has been famous as a World Heritage City
5.In paragraph 2, Michael Nutter is mainly talking about ________.
A.the economic development of the city
B.the history of Philadelphia
C.the contributions of the city
D.the significance of the city's selection
6.What opinion does Alan Greenberger hold?

D.The honor will bring the city a better future.

(2023—2024学年陕西西安高一期末)Friday and Saturday were full of surprises for Chinese, as two places in China were listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. The first, a World Natural Heritage, is composed of a series of migratory bird sanctuaries (候鸟保护地) along the coast of the Yellow Sea in Yancheng, East China's Jiangsu Province. The second, the Liangzhu Archaeological Site in Hangzhou, East China's Zhejiang Province, was listed as a World Cultural Heritage site.
China began the application process for the bird sanctuaries in 2017. It only took two years to successfully complete the process. The migratory bird sanctuaries are the central node of the East AsianAustralasian Flyway and many endangered species, especially threatened
migratory birds including redcrowned cranes and flamingos, go there to hunt for food during the migration season. The birds usually take a month to finish their migration. At about 10 days into their migration, they must stop and find food in order to have the energy to continue their journey.
Compared to the short turnaround for the World Natural Heritage's application, the Liangzhu application was far more complicated. The application team spent six years making their dream a reality. The site in Liangzhu is evidence of the existence of an early regional state in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River during the late Neolithic period in China, which helps fill in the gaps in the history of the ricecultivating civilizations of China and East Asia more than 5,000 years ago. The site was one of the 20th century's most important archaeological discoveries in China.
With these two new additions, China now has 55 World Heritage sites, the highest number in the world. The successful application means greater responsibility and obligations (义务). Protecting these places is much more important and is our future work.
8.What is special about the migratory bird sanctuaries?
A.It's the first China's world natural heritage on the sea.
B.It provides safe habitats for endangered species.
C.It's located along the coast of the Yellow River.
D.It supplies abundant fresh water to migratory birds.
9.According to paragraph 2, how do migratory bird sanctuaries protect birds?
A.By creating warm places to produce baby birds.
B.By preventing them from being killed by hunters.
C.By providing food supplies during their migration.
D.By curing the endangered birds after their journey.
10.Why is Liangzhu chosen for the world heritage site?
A.It shows the long history of China.
B.It proves the wisdom of the people.
C.It witnesses the civilization of an age.
D.It reveals the food of the late Neolithic.
11.What is the last paragraph mainly talking about?
A.The application success's promotion of tourism.
B.Chinese responsibilities after the successful application.
C.The two places' influence on Chinese history.
D.Chinese challenge of protecting birds' migration.
