Grammar and Vocabulary Section A Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank. In March of 2023, a strange video of Will Smith eating spaghetti was created using an early text-to-video AI tool called ModelScope and released on Reddit, a popular content-sharing platform. The technology, while impressive, was deeply limited in its ability to accurately represent the text hint some users even described the video as “nightmarish”. Little did they know that a year later text-to-video AI would be creating videos so realistic ____21____they would blur (模糊) the line between the digital and the real. If you've ever used a text-to-image generative AI tool like DALL-E, you'll see that text-to-video tools work in a similar way. The user provides a hint, like “cat swimming in a fish tank,” and the tool creates a video ____22____ (base) on everything it knows about cats, water, fish and the physics of how they might interact. The tool makes use of what are known as “visual patches (补丁)”, building blocks of data ____23____help the AI to understand how everything in the scene should interact and progress, frame by frame. Tools that are based on a spread system, like OpenAI’s Sora, are trained ____24____ (recognize) objects so they can improve images by deleting the incorrect visual patches. This process could be compared to a worker____25____ (melt) raw gold multiple times in order to remove all its useless elements. One of the remarkable things about OpenAI’s Sora is that it can generate content in a variety of styles. When the project____26____ (disclose) last February, OpenAI claimed that “Sora can generate videos up to a minute long while maintaining visual quality and according to the user's hint.” But there are limits of Sora’s capabilities. As OpenAI shows in some demo videos, the physics of how objects interact in the videos doesn't always make sense. Sometimes people or objects ____27____ (mix) together, transform into other things, disappear or appear out of nowhere. But if the technology can appear suddenly from the strange spaghetti video to ____28____ it is now in a year, these limitations probably won't last long. Besides OpenAI's Sora, Google has two products called Lumiere and VideoPoet, but like Sora, they ____29____not be open for public use yet. These tools are still being seriously tested and improved to ensure that people can't use them to produce inappropriate content or break laws. In the meantime, you can still experiment with simple text-to-video tools ____30____invideo AI, a creation and education in mind. It's perfect for creating online courses, “explainer” videos or providing visuals for a short story. Section B Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need. A. community B. reveal C. originally D. marketing E. eventually F. electronic G. added H. strike I. dressing J. statistic K. material Despite its name there’s nothing little about Xiaohongshu. Every day, millions of people swipe (滑动) its ___31___ pages. The app has a huge goal. Its website states: “Our mission is inspiring lives to share and discover the wonders of the world.” These “wonders” were ___32___ luxury brands, and the users who shared their discoveries were mostly women from China’s major cities. Xiaohongshu was created in 2013 as a shopping platform. Beauty and fashion have always been its most popular topics, but new categories keep getting ___33___. Now companies everywhere are paying attention to this vast ___34___ of consumers. Xiaohongshu combines lifestyle tips with business. “KeyOpinion Consumers” demonstrate products and strike a note of friendship. As users make comments, connections grow among like-minded people. Brands build ___35___ strategies around the latest trends. For example, millions of Xiaohongshu users have posted about “dopamine ___36___.” Search “dopamine” in the app, and you’ll find endless products, including furniture and dog clothing! Brands hope that you, and a few million others, will buy their products. Xiaohongsnu offers more than ___37___ goods. Its mission to “inspire lives” also happens when people promote learning and creativity. Users can connect with experts and enthusiasts in many fields. A talented pianist can show you how to practice scales. A skilled painter could demonstrate how to mix colors. A dancer might post a video of dance moves that you can copy step by step. And a popular vlogger (博主) may ___38___ her daily routine, complete with relaxing music. You could spend hours scrolling (滚动) through this not-so-little book. But try to fill your time—and mind—wisely. Why not use Xiaohongshu to learn more English? After all, one of the greatest “wonders of the world” is human language. On this app, you can look for teachers who speak clearly, offer natural conversations and communicate sincere friendship. Remember that even in the huge world of social media, you were made to be more than a consumer ___39___. You were made to be known and understood. Learning to ___40___ up a good conversation could be your mission on Xiaohongshu! III. Reading Comprehension Section A Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context. Unemployment is a significant problem in many developing countries. Without steady work, individuals ____41____ to rise out of poverty, and the community as a whole also misses out. Many unemployed people could have done much good through their labor if they had been given the opportunity to contribute. ____42____, without opportunities for reasonable work, young people sometimes turn to crime and violence in order to provide for themselves. Thus, giving people opportunities to work is essential for the community’s well-being. Unemployment creates many different problems for communities. Encouraging people to start businesses is an effective way to reduce unemployment, and this can be done in several ways. Education plays a vital role in ____43____ people for certain jobs, but many young people find that even if they are ____44____, the jobs are just not there. This was the situation that Rwandan entrepreneur Noel Nizeyimana faced. When he graduated from university with a degree in soil and environmental science, he sent out application after application but received no job offers, so he turned to creating his own business. With three of his colleagues, he founded Greencare Rwanda Ltd., a company that transforms waste into products that can be used for various purposes. ____45____, one of the company’s programs processes waste and turns it into organic fertilizer used by local farmers. The company has also ____46____ into plastic recycling and produces paving materials from sand and plastic. Thus, Greencare Rwanda is providing materials for other industries as well. Greencare Rwanda Ltd was able to ____47____ the ground largely due to funds it received from the UN Youth Joint Programme. This program is a(n) ____48____ to reach the UN’s sustainable development goal of “decent work and economic growth.” The assistance ____49____ helped Greencare, which now produces 400 tons of fertilizer and 2,560 square meters of paving materials per year. It also employs 25 people, which shows that helping people start businesses provides work for more than just the person who receives the funds. All this raises the question of what more can be done to ____50____ young people to start their own businesses. Providing funds to cover the initial costs, as the UN Youth Joint Programme did for Nizeyimana, is certainly important as the starting costs for businesses can be____51____ high. Governments are sometimes hesitant to provide funds to startups because success is not ____52____. Starting a business is risky, and nobody wants to waste money, but experts ____53____ that governments should not impose (强加) too many requirements. Different regions will need different ____54____, so trying to impose a set of one size fits all requirements can restrict growth rather than promote it. While there are other ways to address unemployment, ____55____ young business owners is one of the most effective — especially when those businesses produce goods that genuinely help local communities. 41. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (A) One hundred and eight years ago, the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank to the bottom of the ocean. It was the most luxurious passenger ship of its time and thought to be unsinkable. Sadly, that proved to be false and more than 1,500 of the approximately 2,200 people onboard lost their lives. One reason for the tremendous loss of life was the lack of sufficient lifeboats on the ship. The Titanic had 20 of these small boats, which were meant to be used in an emergency. The boats could carry between 40 and 65 people each. All together, they could hold only 1,178 people, far too few to save all of the passengers and crew. After the Titanic hit the iceberg, an order was given to launch the boats. Many passengers didn’t take the order seriously. Instead of responding to it, they decided to stay indoors rather than go out onto the freezing cold deck. Those passengers who took the order seriously began to get into the boats. Some of the boats were lowered into the ocean before they were full. Two of the boats floated away empty when the ship began to sink. In 1987, movie producer John Joslyn and a team dove to the site of the Titanic’s wreckage in a $20 million submersible (潜水器). They filmed for hundreds of hours. Some of the film was later used in a documentary about the Titanic. Joslyn dreamed of a place where visitors could experience much of what those on board the Titanic actually saw, touched and encountered. Joslyn wanted a “living theater” with guests as part of the experience. In 2010, his dream came true with the construction of Titanic Museum Attraction (TMA). Located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, TMA is the world’s largest permanent Titanic museum with over 400 Titanic artifacts (文物). 56. How does the writer begin this article? A. (C) Every day we are surrounded by large amounts of information, much of which is given by people who want to shape our decisions. So, we need to evaluate the information and determine how we should respond. Evaluating information and arguments requires critical thinking, the ability to think clearly and see how ideas are connected. Like any skill, critical thinking can be learned, and the best way to learn it is by practicing. You cannot evaluate an argument that you do not understand. Thus, the first step to critical thinking must always be listening. You may need to ask questions to clarify the person’s claims. Ask them to define their key terms, especially words with multiple meanings. Once you understand what the person is saying, then you can consider whether it is true. The most important question is whether the facts they state are actually true. You can try to figure this out by considering the source of the facts and whether the facts line up with what you already know about the topic. If there is a conflict, you must then discover whether your original understanding was incorrect or whether the new claims are wrong. It’s also possible to draw incorrect conclusions from correct facts. Often this comes from mistakes in logic, so learning about common logical fallacies (谬论) and how to recognize them can help. Also consider whether there could be another explanation for the facts besides the one you’ve been given. Critical thinking also involves examining people’s motivations and assumptions. For example, a salesman will present facts that are selected to convince you to buy what he is selling. He will leave out facts that don’t help him reach that goal. Assumptions can likewise affect people’s claims since people want to confirm what they already believe. It is necessary that you recognize these factors to predict when someone else’s statements might not be accurate or complete. Finally, critical thinking requires examining your own beliefs and assumptions as well. Poking holes in other people’s arguments can be necessary, but you must acknowledge the possibility that your own beliefs are wrong. Your own assumptions and motivations may affect your thinking without you realizing it. By critically examining both your own and other people’ opinions, you can understand the way the world works and make decisions in light of the truth. 63. According to the passage, which one of the following is TRUE? A. The majority of information given to us is actually to shape our minds. B. Critical thinking is usually learned by practicing, like any other skills. C. Only when you fully understand one’s claims, can you make a right evaluation. D. A conflict between the original understanding and a new one is critical thinking. 64. What is the purpose of the example of a salesman given in the passage? A. To illustrate the important function of critical thinking B. To confirm the difference of people’s motivations and assumptions C. To convince people to buy the product mentioned in the passage D. To warn people to pay special attention to the facts given 65. The expression “Poking holes in other people’s arguements” in the last paragraph probably means ______. A. Finding out others’ faults B. Evaluating others’ opinions C. Criticizing others’ points of view D. Supporting others’ ideas 66. What can we conclude from the passage? A. Drawing incorrect decisions from facts depends on its logic. B. A fact may sometimes guide us to make a wrong decision. C. Critical thinking is connected with one’s own beliefs and assumptions. D. Without logic knowledge, critical thinking is impossible to occur. Section C Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. In the world of social media, people often create videos to share their knowledge about a series of topics, from piano lessons to computer repair. As a result, when someone is seeking an answer to a question, they often turn to YouTube for an answer. It stands to reason that those who have trouble with studying would also consult YouTube for a solution. ____67____ In Korea, the popular videos are called “gongbang,” which means Study Broadcast. In Japan, they’re called “benkyoudouga,” and in America and other countries, they’re called Study with Me. No matter what their names are, many viewers have jumped on the SWM bandwagon. Students create and share videos of themselves studying earnestly, usually for an exam. Many of the videos are shot in a quiet room. The camera often focuses on a clean desk with a tidy display of books, notebooks, a computer and a timer. Throughout most of the videos, no words are spoken; the focus is on the creator as he or she studies. ____68____ Are SWM videos just “lazy content,” or are they beneficial? Financial site Business Insider says this type of video “serves a real purpose, helping people focus.” The Korea Advanced Institute of Science an Technology performed research on Study with Me videos and discovered several benefits. First, people can set up quiet study areas in their homes to view the videos. ____69____ Next, observing the diligence of the creator often motivates viewers, especially those who have trouble studying. Finally, viewer gain emotional support by knowing that they are part of a group with perhaps thousands others, all working toward the same goal. Some viewers have said that Study with Me “satisfies the need for belonging and social contact” by providing a sense of companionship. ____70____ Some SWM livestreams, where viewers can chat with each other in real time, feel like online study groups. This helps create a satisfactory study environment where students — even those who struggle — can find the inspiration they need to stay on task. A. The point is not to teach anything but simply to provide a study companion. B. The creator becomes a study partner, which reduces the isolation many students feel. C. That is why SWM comes into being, and becomes more and more popular these days. D. That’s where Study with Me (SWM) videos come into play. E. Silent videos can help students overcome the feelings of isolation and loneliness. F. This cuts down on their commute (通勤) to libraries or established study rooms. IV. Summary Writing 71. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.  As soon as they walk into a room, tall people command attention. They also enjoy some advantages, such as being considered attractive (especially for men). Tall people also tend to have higher status jobs and consequently earn more money than others. It’s no wonder that many young people are concerned about growing as tall as possible. There are many myths (荒诞的说法) about growth and height in circulation (流通), though, so let’s examine them and find out the truth. Myth: People stop growing during puberty (青春期). Fact: Boys can still grow even in their early 20s though both girls and boys grow more during childhood and puberty. Girls tend to grow more at younger ages than boys. But boys catch up and usually pass girls by the time they reach adulthood. Myth: A person’s height is completely determined by genes. Fact: Genes do play a role, determining about 60 to 80 percent of a person’s height. But the rest is influenced by environmental factors. Nutrition during childhood is the most important. Without enough vitamins, minerals, and protein, children do not become as tall as their genes would allow. Myth: Caffeine stops children from growing. Fact: In moderation, caffeine does not restrict growth. A child or teenager can have a cup of coffee or tea with no ill effects on height. However, too much caffeine use might restrict growth because it prevents sleep, which is when most growth happens. Myth: Stretching or hanging upside down can make you taller. Fact: It’s not clear whether this is true or not. Some evidence indicates that stretching can increase height while one is growing. But this doesn’t work once one is fully grown. Hanging upside down makes one taller temporarily, but this may not make a lasting difference. Understanding how growth happens can help people make decisions. For young people who are still growing, a healthy diet is the best way for them to maximize their height. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ V. To light up the ocean floor for other sea animals. A 12. A 13. Have you ever been outside at night and seen how fireflies light up around you? This is called bioluminescence, and it’s when living things can make their own light. Unlike us, who need electricity to turn on lights, some animals and creatures can glow all by themselves thanks to special stuff in their bodies. This super cool ability to shine is something you’ll find a lot in the ocean, which is super dark once you go deep. Many sea animals, like different kinds of fish, can light up too. Scientists just found out about the biggest animal ever that can do this, and it’s a shark called the kitefin shark. The kitefin shark can get as long as about 1.8 metres, which is taller than most people! It’s got thousands of tiny light spots on its skin that let it shine. Scientists are still trying to figure out why it shines. Maybe the light helps the shark find food, or maybe it helps it move to smaller fish without them noticing. If the smaller fish look up, they can’t see the shark shining against the light from above, so the shark can catch them easily. It’s pretty amazing how nature works, right? Questions 11. What is bioluminescence? 12. What is the kitefin shark known for? 13. What might be the reason why the kitefin shark uses its light? 14. A. Changes in the way people use wearable devices. 15. A. Turning chemicals in a wearer’s sweat into electricity. B. Generating electricity while the wearer is running. C. Monitoring wearers’ health conditions. D. Improving wearers’ sleep at night. 16. A. To reduce the demand for traditional batteries. B. To make wearable devices more accessible. C. To let wearers know their body’s natural processes. D. To revolutionize the production of wearable devices. A 15. A 16. Electronics worn on the body serve a variety of purposes, from basic time-telling watches to smartwatches that can deliver emails. Devices like Fitbits track steps, and there are monitors tailored for people to maintain their health. A common challenge for all these wearables is their reliance on batteries for power. To address this, researchers are exploring innovative power sources. They’ve developed small, square pieces that attach to a person’s fingertips. These pieces are most effective during sleep, as they collect tiny amounts of sweat from the fingertips. The sweat contains chemicals that can be turned into electricity. The pieces also generate power when a person presses their fingertips together. This technology could revolutionize how we power wearable devices. It offers a sustainable and convenient alternative to traditional batteries. Imagine a world where your smartwatch or health monitor never needs charging because it’s powered by your body’s natural processes. These pieces represent a significant step towards eco-friendly and self-sustaining wearable technology. The implications of this technology are vast. It could lead to new kinds of wearables that don’t require batteries, making them more convenient and environmentally friendly. As this technology advances, it promises to change the way we interact with personal electronics. Questions 14. What is the passage mainly about? 15. What is the function of the small, square pieces? 16. What is the point of the technology introduced in the passage? 17. A. He doubts its effect and refuses to try it. A 18. A 19. A 20. W: Hey Alex, have you seen this trend where everything has activated carbon now? It’s in toothpaste, cleaning agents, even food! M: Yeah, I noticed that too. Seems like it’s the latest trend. But do you think it actually works? W: Well, this article says there’s no solid evidence it makes your teeth whiter or breath fresher. It could even be damaging to teeth. M: Seriously? I thought it was supposed to be good for purification and similar purposes. W: That’s just marketing, I guess. There’s no scientific evidence for the purification claims either. A dietician, Abby Langer, mentioned that while it’s not harmful, it probably won’t have the effects people are expecting. M: Hmm, that’s disappointing. It does look cool though, especially in ice cream and pizza! W: True, but it’s all for the look then. Before we buy into this trend, we should consider if it’s worth the extra money when there’s no proven benefit. M: Agreed. I’ll stick to my regular products for now. And maybe try the carbon ice cream just once, for the experience! W: Sounds like a plan. Let’s not let the trend dictate our choices, right? M: Right on. Let’s be smart consumers! Questions 17. What are the speakers mainly talking about? 18. What does the article mentioned in the conversation suggest about activated carbon in dental products? 19. What does Abby Langer say about activated carbon? 20. What is the man’s attitude towards trying carbon ice cream? II. 21. that 22. based 23. that##which 24. to recognize 25. melting 26. was disclosed 27. will mix 28. where 29. may 30. like 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 so...that...“如此……以至于”的固定搭配。故填that。 故填based。 故填that/which。 故填to recognize。 故填was disclosed。 故填will mix。 故填where。 故填may。 故填like。 Section B Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. A. C 64. D 65. A 66. 根据第三段“You cannot evaluate an argument that you do not understand.(你不能评价一个你不理解的观点。)”和第四段“Once you understand what the person is saying, then you can consider whether it is true.(一旦你明白了这个人在说什么,你就可以考虑他说的是不是真的。)” 根据第六段“For example, a salesman will present facts that are selected to convince you to buy what he is selling. He will leave out facts that don’t help him reach that goal. Assumptions can likewise affect people’s claims since people want to confirm what they already believe. It is necessary that you recognize these factors to predict when someone else’s statements might not be accurate or complete.(例如,一个推销员会展示一些经过挑选的事实来说服你买他卖的东西。 根据最后一段“but you must acknowledge the possibility that your own beliefs are wrong.(但你必须承认自己的信念有可能是错误的。)”,该句与划线短语所在句“Poking holes in other people’s arguments can be necessary (Poking holes in other people’s arguments可能是必要的)”为转折关系,故应该表示虽然找出别人观点的错误是必要的,但是也须承认自己的信念也可能是错误的。 故选A。 根据第五段“It’s also possible to draw incorrect conclusions from correct facts.(从正确的事实中得出错误的结论也是可能的。)”和第六段“For example, a salesman will present facts that are selected to convince you to buy what he is selling.(例如,一个推销员会展示一些经过挑选的事实来说服你买他卖的东西。)” B。 Section C Directions: Read the following passage. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】The passage provides the answers to people’s confusions/questions about growth. Boys still grow in their early 20s while girls grow more during childhood and puberty. Besides genes, environment and nutrition also affect one’s height. Proper amount of caffeine doesn’t have ill effects on height. Stretching or hanging upside down may help one grow before his full maturity. 要点摘录 ①There are many myths (荒诞的说法) about growth and height in circulation (流通), though, so let’s examine them and find out the truth. ②Boys can still grow even in their early 20s though both girls and boys grow more during childhood and puberty. ③Genes do play a role, determining about 60 to 80 percent of a person’s height.
