Kato was born in Uganda, and moved to England at age 10. He’s used to running, and normally works as a running coach. On December 22, Kato became the first person to run from Cape Town, South Africa to London, England. Kato wanted to call attention to the struggles of immigrants (移民), and the racism they often face. In 2020, Kato began a 381-day program of running at least 6.2 miles (10 km) daily. That effort was meant to call attention to racism. He chose 381 days because that’s how long African Americans were stopped by the bus system in Montgomery, Alabama in the 1950s, fighting to be treated fairly. Kato hoped the run from Cape Town to London would also take 381 days. Instead, the roughly 8,000-mile (12,875-km) trip wound up taking 518 days. He set off on July 24, 2023, starting at a monument honoring Nelson Mandela. For the next year and five months, Kato ran north through Africa and Europe. He ran through dangerous places where wars were being fought. At times he got sick. He was even put in prison in South Sudan. He also faced racism, especially in Europe. But Kato also had many good experiences. In some places children ran along with him for miles. Lots of supporters showed up to greet him when he finally arrived in London. Recently, Kato was asked if he would encourage anyone else to try it. “Definitely not,” he replied. But that doesn’t mean he’ll give up running. In September, he’s planning on running a 153-mile (246-km) race in Greece. 4. Why did Kato start to run? A. To make himself strong enough. B. To follow his job requirement. C. To explore different cultures along the way. D. To draw people’s attention to unfairness. 5. What challenge did Kato face during his run? A. Lacking financial support. B. Encountering extreme weather. C. Running in areas at war. D. Having problems understanding locals. 6. Which words can best describe Kato? A. Humorous and inspiring. B. Responsible and determined. C. Creative and confident. D. Brave and considerate. 7. What does the text mainly talk about? A. The achievement Deo Kato made in running. B. The difficulties and joys of being a running coach. C. Deo Kato’s running journey from Cape Town to London. D. Deo Kato’s influence in fighting racism and immigration. C It’s too early to name any activity The Sport of 2025, but if you asked me to do it today, I would give the title to Hyrox, which is an individual but interactive activity. Fitness fans run eight kilometres and stop after each to perform exercises such as sled pushes or burpees. The faster you complete the course, the higher your score is in the Hyrox worldwide rankings. Many surveys indicate that people are exercising more now than in previous years. It’s individual fitness pursuits that are driving the rise. I spent the first half of my 29-year-old life as a hockey player and the second as a distance runner. I long for the common goal of team sports, but I also value the responsibility and clear results that come from working toward my own running targets. So it’s odd to me that people prefer individual fitness pursuits to team sports. One common explanation is that organized sports haven’t bounced back since the pandemic (疫情) a few years ago. When people learned to exercise with less money, equipment, space, time and organization, they kept individual activities. Meanwhile, there are now fitness apps for users to tailor works based on their heart rates and sleep quality. The rise of wearables has also got some of us addicted to our own exercise routines. However, an obvious problem for individual sports is loneliness. Engaging in team sports is a proven way to ease it, which boosts our ability to interact and form meaningful relationships. Well, Hyrox is a combined activity: an individual sport that we do with others. Each competition follows the same scoring system, which allows people to compare their results with others around the world. It’s the type that’s come to dominate the fitness world. And, according to Guy Faulkner, a professor at the University of British Columbia, if it gets people out of the door, then it’s a good one. “The most effective form of sport,” he said, “is the form you will sustain.” 8. What is the key feature of Hyrox? A. It requires teamwork and shared plans. B. It is organized to find sports partners. C. It skips physical challenges for leisure. D. It is self-paced but ranked with others. 9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. Negative effects of the pandemic. B. Methods of choosing wearables. C. Reasons for the shift to individual fitness. D. Tailored workouts with fitness apps. 10. How does Hyrox address the problem with individual sports? A. By targeting people afraid of public interactions. B. By connecting individuals with shared experiences. C. By prioritizing personal achievements over group goals. D. By offering a kind of treatment for mental health issues. 11. What does Guy Faulkner consider the most effective sport? A. Sport that requires the least effort. B. Sport that involves more people. C. Sport that one will do consistently. D. Sport that provides the quickest results. D If animals could talk, how would they express their feelings? While some pets seem calm and content, others often appear more troubled. Sometimes, animals may even appear to display some of the same anxious or uncontrollable behaviors as humans with mental disorders. But do animals truly experience mental illnesses like humans? Questions over the extent to which animals can experience mental illnesses have existed for centuries. While pet owners and researchers have been wondering about what animals might be thinking, modern science and brain imaging are providing clearer insights. Experts now believe that many mammals, and even some birds, can feel anxiety in ways similar to humans, though those similarities likely only go so far. Animal doctors and animal behavior researchers say animals can experience mental illnesses, but not in exactly the same way humans do. For example, while dogs and cats may show signs of anxiety, they can’t express their feelings like humans can. This means we need to rely on their behavior to identify problems. Animal doctors diagnose anxiety or uncontrollable disorders based on visible signs, but since they can’t read animals’ minds, it’s unclear how many truly experience mental states similar to humans. University of Pennsylvania associate professor and animal doctor Carlo Siracusa believes animals “absolutely” can experience mental illnesses. He often works with pets showing aggression or destructive behavior caused by fear or suffering, similar to angst in humans. Both human and animal brains process emotions in the same area, despite differences in size and complexity. For instance, dogs that face neglect or major changes in their environment may show sudden aggression, and like humans, pets can develop uncontrollable behaviors. But some mental illnesses, like schizophrenia (精神分裂症), seem unique to humans due to the brain’s complexity. Studies suggest such conditions may result from specific DNA changes unique to humans. Animals don’t appear to feel social insecurity or hopelessness over abstract ideas, so they likely don’t experience certain types of depression. Siracusa explains this may be because animals lack advanced brain functions for long-term planning. Whether animals have self-awareness remains a debated and unresolved question. 12. How can doctors identify mental illnesses in animals? A. Through laboratory tests. B. Through behavioral assessments. C. By referring to the medical history. D. By conducting physical examinations. 13. What does the underlined word “angst” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Anxiety. B. Pleasure. C. Surprise. D. Contentment. 14. What makes schizophrenia appear unique to humans? A. Humans are interested in handling abstract problems. B. Animals are unable to express their feelings. C. There’s no need for animals to make plans. D. Humans possess advanced and complicated brains. 15. What can be the best title for the text? A. Can animals suffer from mental illnesses like humans? B. How can animals handle their mental illnesses? C. The similarities between animal and human mental illnesses. D. The unique mental illnesses of humans. How to stay fit while traveling rarely scores high on our priority list. Sometimes it is not that we’re not motivated to stay fit or have no time. I believe the issue is that we are out of our regular “home routine”. ___16___ Our brain simply can’t link the new environment to our usual habits and puts itself in “explorer’s” mode. How can we stay fit while traveling? Have a strong vision. The best way to create motivation to stay fit is something you can visualize. If you have the visual, it is good. ___17___ If it helps, write it on a piece of paper and put it in your wallet. This will serve as a vision for you. Once you focus on the vision and consistently think about it, things get easier. Prepare a “travel routine” ahead of time. Consistency is the most important part of the training process. ___18___ I found that having a “travel routine” helps to signal the brain that from the organizational perspective nothing has changed. It doesn’t have to be very detailed and can be as simple as a set of principles, like exercising in the morning or not eating too much after 6:00 p.m. ___19___ The easiest way to stay fit while traveling is to move and make active lifestyle a habit. Walk a couple of stops instead of taking the public transport. Use the stairs instead of an elevator. If there’s a nice viewpoint, look for a way to hike to it rather than drive to it. Sure, it will be tough at first, but our bodies are good at adapting to anything. ___20___ A. Go for a run. B. Walk and explore more. C. In this process, you can have great fun. D. People, language, food—everything is different. E. Picture it, feel it and, most importantly, focus on it. F. Gradually, you’ll become stronger and start enjoying it. G. I am often on the road three weeks out of every month flying from city to city to conduct one-day workshops and week-long training sessions. In other words, I have almost no time for other things. I learned early on that if you want a concept or principle to be remembered, you must illustrate it with a moving story. So I had always collected and used a lot of stories to drive home the points I was teaching in my seminars(研讨会)about the importance of acting from love, believing in yourself and your dreams, always following your heart, trusting your intuition(直觉), setting high goals, overcoming obstacles, and never ever giving up on your dreams. Two years ago, a strange thing happened. One day, out of the blue, someone asked me, “Is that story you told about the Girl Scout who sold 3,526 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies in one year in a book anywhere? My daughter needs to read it.” The very next day someone asked, “That story about the boy and the puppy—is that in a book anywhere? I need to read it to my son.” It continued day after day for the next month. “I need to read that story about the boy with one leg who became a star to my staff. I need to show them that they really have no excuses not to excel in life.” “Is that story you told about the boy who was burned in the motorcycle accident in a book anywhere? I want to send it to my son in college.” Day after day I was asked the same question— “Is that story in a book anywhere?” I was busy with work. I had countless stories, but they were all over the place, in my head or on old notes. I knew I couldn’t meet these demands while keeping up with my teaching. One evening, an idea suddenly struck me. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ When it eventually came out, the book became an immediate best-seller. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 山东省临沂第一中学2024-2025学年高三下学期 四月阶段性测试英语 (本试卷满分150分,考试时间120分钟) 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? Recently Kato was asked if he would encourage anyone else to try it. A Lacking financial support. B. Encountering extreme weather. C. Running in areas at war. D. Having problems understanding locals. 6. Which words can best describe Kato? A. Humorous and inspiring. B. Responsible and determined. C. Creative and confident. D. Brave and considerate. 7. What does the text mainly talk about? A. The achievement Deo Kato made in running. B. The difficulties and joys of being a running coach. C. Deo Kato’s running journey from Cape Town to London. D. Deo Kato’s influence in fighting racism and immigration. D 5. C 6. B 7. 根据文章第三段中“Kato wanted to call attention to the struggles of immigrants (移民), and the racism they often face.(Kato想让人们关注移民的挣扎和他们经常面临的种族主义)”及第四段中“In 2020, Kato began a 381-day program of running at least 6.2 miles (10 km) daily. That effort was meant to call attention to racism.(2020 年,Kato开始了一项为期381天的计划,每天至少跑 6.2 英里(10 公里)。这项努力旨在引起人们对种族主义的关注)”可知,Kato开始跑步是为了让人们关注移民所面临的困境以及他们常遭遇的种族主义,也就是关注不公平现象。故选D。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段中“He ran through dangerous places where wars were being fought. At times he got sick. He was even put in prison in South Sudan.(他跑过了正在发生战争的危险地区。 C。 C It’s too early to name any activity The Sport of 2025, but if you asked me to do it today, I would give the title to Hyrox, which is an individual but interactive activity. I long for the common goal of team sports but I also value the responsibility and clear results that come from working toward my own running targets. D 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第一段“It’s too early to name any activity The Sport of 2025, but if you asked me to do it today, I would give the title to Hyrox, which is an individual but interactive activity.(现在给任何一项活动命名为2025年的运动都还为时过早,但如果你让我今天做,我会把它命名为Hyrox,这是一项个人但互动的活动)”和倒数第二段“Well, Hyrox is a combined activity: an individual sport that we do with others. Each competition follows the same scoring system, which allows people to compare their results with others around the world.(Hyrox是一项联合活动:我们和其他人一起进行的个人运动。每次比赛都采用相同的计分系统,这使得人们可以将自己的成绩与世界各地的其他人进行比较)”可知,Hyrox的关键特性是它是自定节奏,与他人进行比较排名。故选D。 【9题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第三段“One common explanation is that organized sports haven’t bounced back since the pandemic (疫情) a few years ago. When people learned to exercise with less money, equipment, space, time and organization, they kept individual activities. Meanwhile, there are now fitness apps for users to tailor works based on their heart rates and sleep quality. The rise of wearables has also got some of us addicted to our own exercise routines.(一种常见的解释是,自几年前的大流行以来,有组织的体育运动一直没有反弹。当人们学会用更少的钱、设备、空间、时间和组织进行锻炼时,他们会保持个人活动。与此同时,现在有一些健身应用程序可以让用户根据自己的心率和睡眠质量来定制健身项目。可穿戴设备的兴起也让我们中的一些人沉迷于自己的锻炼习惯)”可知,第三段的主要内容是转向个人健身的原因。故选C。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Engaging in team sports is a proven way to ease it, which boosts our ability to interact and form meaningful relationships. Well, Hyrox is a combined activity: an individual sport that we do with others. Each competition follows the same scoring system, which allows people to compare their results with others around the world.(参加团队运动是一种行之有效的缓解方法,它能提高我们互动和建立有意义的关系的能力。Hyrox是一项联合活动:我们和其他人一起进行的个人运动。每次比赛都采用相同的计分系统,这使得人们可以将自己的成绩与世界各地的其他人进行比较)”可知,Hyrox通过将个人与共同的经历联系起来以解决个人运动的问题。故选B。 【11题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段““The most effective form of sport,” he said, “is the form you will sustain.”(“最有效的运动形式,”他说,“是你能保持的形式。”)” C。 D If animals could talk, how would they express their feelings? B 13. A 14. D 15. 根据第三段“This means we need to rely on their behavior to identify problems. Animal doctors diagnose anxiety or uncontrollable disorders based on visible signs, but since they can’t read animals’ minds, it’s unclear how many truly experience mental states similar to humans.(这意味着我们需要依靠它们的行为来识别问题。 故选A项。 根据最后一段“But some mental illnesses, like schizophrenia (精神分裂症), seem unique to humans due to the brain’s complexity. Whether animals have self-awareness remains a debated and unresolved question.(但由于大脑的复杂性,一些精神疾病,如精神分裂症,似乎是人类独有的。研究表明,这种情况可能是由人类特有的特定DNA变化造成的。动物似乎不会对抽象的想法感到社会不安全感或绝望,所以它们可能不会经历某些类型的抑郁。锡拉库萨解释说,这可能是因为动物缺乏高级的大脑功能来进行长期规划。动物是否有自我意识仍然是一个有争议和未解决的问题)”可知,精神分裂症似乎是人类特有的,原因是人类大脑的复杂性以及高级性。故选A项。 根据第一段“If animals could talk, how would they express their feelings? While some pets seem calm and content, others often appear more troubled. Sometimes, animals may even appear to display some of the same anxious or uncontrollable behaviors as humans with mental disorders. But do animals truly experience mental illnesses like humans?(如果动物会说话,它们会怎样表达自己的感情呢?虽然有些宠物看起来平静而满足,但其他宠物往往表现得更麻烦。有时,动物甚至可能表现出与患有精神障碍的人类相同的焦虑或无法控制的行为。但是动物真的会像人类一样有精神疾病吗?)”及下文内容可知,本文主要讲述动物会不会像人类一样经历精神疾病,所以A项“动物会像人类一样患上精神疾病吗?”是本文最好的标题。故选A项。 How to stay fit while traveling rarely scores high on our priority list. G. Yet, traveling tends to break our regular pattern and change our focus. 16. D 17. E 18. G 19. B 20. Walk a couple of stops instead of taking the public transport. Use the stairs instead of an elevator.(在旅行中保持健康最简单的方法就是运动,让积极的生活方式成为一种习惯。 【20题详解】 根据上文“Sure, it will be tough at first, but our bodies are good at adapting to anything.(当然,一开始会很困难,但我们的身体擅长适应任何事情)”可知,逐选项承接上文说明接下来会发生什么,F项“逐渐地你会变得更强壮并开始享受它”切题。 Growing up in a large family, I wasn’t a particularly materialistic person. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One evening, an idea suddenly struck me. Why not compile these powerful stories into a book? Although I was occupied with my teaching career, I realized the significance of sharing these stories in a more accessible way. I decided to spare some time each day to sort out the stories. I gathered all my old notes and spent hours recalling the details of each story from my memory. It was a challenging task, but the thought of helping others with these inspiring stories motivated me. I carefully selected the most impactful stories and arranged them in an engaging order. When it eventually came out, the book became an immediate best-seller. People from all walks of life were attracted to these stories. Parents bought it to read to their children, hoping to inspire them with positive values. Teachers used it as a teaching resource in their classes. Employees found motivation in the stories to overcome difficulties at work. I received countless letters and emails from readers, sharing how the stories had changed their lives. I was deeply touched by these feedbacks and felt that all my efforts were worthwhile. It also made me realize that the power of stories is truly limitless. 词汇激活 行为类 ①意识到:realized/ was aware of ②.决定做某事:decided to do/ determine to do ③. 有挑战的:challenging/tough 【点睛】[高分句型1].
