He often complained about his neighbors. He even got upset when his neighbor Catherine and David had a baby. Instead of saying congratulations, he loudly complained about the baby’s crying. One day while he was leaving his apartment, Mr. Douglas saw that his rubbish was gone. He found a note from David: Good morning Mr. Douglas. I saw your rubbish here and since I was on my way out I pick it up for you. Have a nice day! Mr. Douglas thought David was not smart but several days later, outside his door, Mister Douglas found another note. It said: we are very sorry about the noise. Our baby was not feeling well, so he cried a lot last night. He felt really silly because he didn’t even hear the baby. He turned the TV up to loud, and that covered a noise of the baby crying. That afternoon while he was going to the apartment building, he saw Catherine and David, he said hello politely and thanked them for their notes. Mr. Douglas was very glad that they treated him kindly. Now he knows the importance of being polite.
A
Members of Gen Beta, for short, will be the children of younger millennials and older Gen Zers and by 2035, they are estimated to make up at least 16% of the global population, according to McCrindle, an Australian social researcher. Additionally, many Gen Beta members will likely live into the 22nd century. Babies born in 2025 will be 76 years old when the year 2101 comes around.
Here’s what to know about Generation Beta and those that came before.
What years will Gen Beta be born between?
Members of Gen Beta will be born between 2025 and 2039, according to McCrindle.
Why ‘Beta’?
Generation Beta follows Generation Alpha, in line with the Greek alphabet.
How will technology affect Gen Beta?
McCrindle predicts that digital and physical life will be seamless (无缝的) for Gen Beta. While members of Gen Alpha have become acquainted with smart technology and artificial intelligence, Gen Beta will experience AI and automation in every aspect of life, from school to work to healthcare and entertainment, McCrindle says.
As technology continues to rapidly advance, Gen Z parents are likely to give more restrictions on how their children interact with the digital world. According to McCrindle, 36% of Gen Z parents, compared to 30% of millennial parents, strongly agree that children’s screen time should be limited.
Generation names for past 100 years
The start and end of a new generation is sometimes vague, but these generation group names are often used for individuals born between the following years:
Greatest Generation: 1901-1927
Silent Generation: 1928-1945 (age 80+)
Baby Boomers: 1946-1964 (age 61-79)
Generation X: 1965-1979 (age 46-60)
Millennials: 1980-1994 (age 31-45)
Generation Z: 1995-2009 (age 16-30)
Gen Alpha: 2010-2024 (age 15 and under)
What will the next generation be called, after Gen Beta?
If naming conventions continue following the current trend, it is likely that the next generational group, after Gen Beta, will be Generation Gamma, according to McCrindle. This generation will likely represent those born between 2040 and 2054.
21. What can we know about Gen Beta?
A. It is the first generation to be exposed to AI.
B. It is the children of both millennials and Gen Zers.
C. It will become the majority of the population in ten years.
D. It is named in accordance with the Greek alphabet, following Gen Alpha.
22. What is the main difference between Gen Z and Millennial parents?
A. Gen Z parents avoid technology.
B. Millennial parents prefer traditional methods.
C. Millennial parents rely more on social media.
D. Gen Z parents are more cautious about technology.
23. What generation does a kid in kindergarten belong to?
A. Millennials. B. Generation Z.
C. Gen Alpha. D. Gen Beta.
D 22. D 23. C
根据第六段“Generation Beta follows Generation Alpha, in line with the Greek alphabet.(贝塔一代紧随阿尔法一代,按照希腊字母顺序。)”
根据第九段“According to McCrindle, 36% of Gen Z parents, compared to 30% of millennial parents, strongly agree that children’s screen time should be limited.(根据McCrindle的调查,36%的Z世代父母强烈认为应该限制孩子的屏幕时间,而千禧一代的这一比例为30%。)”

Ivy Scott was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (左心发育不全综合征), meaning only half of her heart functions properly. Despite spending her first birthday in hospital undergoing surgery, Ivy has dedicated to fundraising and delivering presents to children at Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool since she was two.
Ivy’s condition was detected when her mother, Clare Bouch, did a 20-week pregnancy scan. Further tests revealed the rare condition, which affects only 1 in 4,000 babies. At just eight days old, Ivy underwent her first open-heart surgery. Clare recalled, “Seeing her after surgery was heartbreaking. She was so swollen that she seemed to have boxed ten rounds with Mike Tyson. Though covered in wires and tubes, she made it through eventually.”
Ivy had another surgery the following days and spent her first birthday in hospital. Since then, she has recovered gradually. Under the care of her mother, she could do moderate exercise. Supported by the charity Tiny Tickers, Clare said, “She’s done so well and always has a smile for everyone.”
Ivy began her gifts deliveries in 2018 when she was two, handing out 90 gift bags containing biscuits and personal care items. In 2019, despite a broken leg, she delivered teddy bears to the intensive care unit (ICU). In 2020 and 2021, Ivy raised £1,000 each year through online fundraising. In 2022, she returned to delivering presents, bringing books as gifts. And in 2023, she raised another £1,000 and took in gifts of baby toys and presents for teenagers. Last year, she still delivered over 200 presents. Clare shared, “She’s incredibly thoughtful and always thinks of others.”
Ivy’s selfless spirit continues to inspire others, proving that even with half a heart, she has the biggest heart of all.
24. Why does the author mention Mike Tyson in paragraph 2?
A. To show Ivy’s love for boxing.
B. To give an example of a famous person.
C. To emphasize how excellent the surgery was.
D. To describe Ivy’s condition after the operation.
25. What can we infer from the passage about Ivy’s illness?
A. It is completely cured after her first surgery.
B. It leads to her depression during her recovery.
C. It requires more than one surgery and attentive care.
D. It prevents her from participating in any physical activities.
26. What can we know about Ivy in her charity work?
A. She tries to vary the types of gifts.
B. She sticks to the gift delivery every year.
C. She carries out it to prove her selflessness.
D. She uses donations from others as presents.
27. Which of the following best describes Ivy’s character?
A. Optimistic and humorous.
B. Considerate and determined.
C. Curious and adventurous.
D. Confident and independent.
D 25. C 26. A 27. B

根据第二段内容“Clare recalled, ‘Seeing her after surgery was heartbreaking. She was so swollen that she seemed to have boxed ten rounds with Mike Tyson.’(Clare回忆道:“手术后见到她令人心碎。她肿得好像和Mike Tyson打了十局。)”并结合常识可知,MikeTyson是一位很厉害拳击运动员,和他打了十局,应该是肿得很厉害。由此推知,作者提到Mike Tyson是为了用比喻生动描述Ivy术后肿胀的外貌,强调经历手术后其身体状况的严重性。故选D项。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。文中第二段内容“At just eight days old, Ivy underwent her first open-heart surgery.(8天大的时候,Ivy接受了她的第一次心脏直视手术。)”提到Ivy 在出生后8天接受第一次开胸手术;第三段内容“Ivy had another surgery the following days and spent her first birthday in hospital. Since then, she has recovered gradually. Under the care of her mother, she could do moderate exercise.( Ivy在接下来的几天里又做了一次手术,并在医院度过了她的第一个生日。从那以后,她逐渐康复了。在妈妈的照顾下,她可以做适度的运动。)”提到随后又经历了手术,在医院里度过了第一个生日,并在母亲和慈善机构的照料下逐渐恢复。由此可推断,她的病情需要多次手术和持续护理。故选C项。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段内容“…handing out 90 gift bags containing biscuits and personal care items(分发90个装有饼干和个人护理用品的礼品袋)”,“…she delivered teddy bears to the intensive care unit(ICU)(她把泰迪熊送到了重症监护室)”,“In 2022, she returned to delivering presents, bringing books as gifts. And in 2023, she raised another £1,000 and took in gifts of baby toys and presents for teenagers.(2022年,她重新开始送礼物,带来书籍作为礼物。2023年,她又筹集了1000英镑,并收到了婴儿玩具和青少年礼物。)”的描述,Ivy自2018 年起每年赠送不同类型的礼物,如饼干、泰迪熊、书籍、婴儿玩具等,可见她在礼物种类上不断变化。故选A项。
根据文章第二段内容“Though covered in wires and tubes, she made it through eventually.(尽管身上布满了电线和管子,她最终还是挺了过来。)”可知,她很小的时候就经历了难熬的手术,同时文章第四段内容“Ivy began her gifts deliveries in 2018 when she was two, handing out 90 gift bags containing biscuits and personal care items.(Ivy从2018年开始送礼物,当时她两岁,分发了90个装有饼干和个人护理用品的礼品袋。)”

“Learning and memory are generally associated with brains and brain cells alone, but our study shows that other cells in the body can learn and form memories, too,” explains New York University’s Nikolay V. Kukushkin, the lead author of the study, which appears in the journal Nature Communications.
The research tried to better understand whether non-brain cells can help with memory by taking advantage of a well-known idea in neuroscience called the massed-spaced effect (间隔效应), which says that people usually remember information better when they study at separate times instead of all at once in a concentrated session.
Scientists studied two types of non-brain cells in a lab. They exposed the cells to different chemical signals to replicated learning process, which is similar to how brain cells are exposed to neurotransmitters (神经递质) when we learn. In response, the non-brain cells turned on a “memory gene” — the same gene that brain cells turn on when they detect a pattern in the information and restructure their connections in order to form memories. To monitor the memory and learning process, the scientists engineered these non-brain cells to make a glowing (发光的) protein, which indicated when the memory gene was on and when it was off.
The results showed that these non-brain cells could tell when the chemical pulses (脉冲), which imitated bursts of neurotransmitter in the brain, were given separately rather than simply extended. Specifically, when the pulses were delivered at separate times, they turned on the “memory gene” more strongly, and for a longer time, than when the same treatment was delivered all at once.
“This discovery opens new doors for understanding how memory works and could lead to better ways to enhance learning and treat memory problems,” observes Kukushkin. “Meanwhile, it suggests we will need to treat our body more like the brain in the future. For example, consider what our pancreas (胰腺) remembers about the pattern of our past meals to maintain healthy levels of blood sugar or consider what a cancer cell remembers about the pattern of chemotherapy (化疗).”
28. What is the traditional belief about learning and memory?
A. Non-brain cells play a significant role in memory.
B. The massed-spaced effect is crucial for learning and memory.
C. Learning and memory are associated with all cells in the body.
D. Only brains and brain cells are related to learning and memory.
29. What does the underlined word “replicated” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Copied. B. Reflected.
C. Analyzed. D. Abandoned.
30. What can we learn from the results of the experiment?
A. The continuous delivery of chemical pulses is better for memory formation.
B. The “memory gene” in non-brain cells is always on during the experiment.
C. Brain cells are more sensitive to chemical pulses than non-brain cells.
D. Non-brain cells can distinguish the pattern of chemical pulses.
31. What is the most likely target field for the future research?
A. Learning efficiency. B. Memory capacity.
C. Body functions. D. Chemical pulses.
D 29. A 30. D 31. C
根据第一段““Learning and memory are generally associated with brains and brain cells alone, but our study shows that other cells in the body can learn and form memories, too,” explains New York University’s Nikolay V. Kukushkin, the lead author of the study, which appears in the journal Nature Communications. (这项发表在《自然・通讯》杂志上的研究的第一作者、纽约大学的Nikolay V. Kukushkin解释道:“学习和记忆通常只与大脑及脑细胞相关,但我们的研究表明,身体里的其他细胞也能够学习并形成记忆。”)”可知,传统观点认为只有大脑和脑细胞与学习和记忆有关。故选D。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“They exposed the cells to different chemical signals to replicated learning process, which is similar to how brain cells are exposed to neurotransmitters(神经递质) when we learn. (他们让这些细胞接触不同的化学信号来replicated学习过程,这类似于我们学习时脑细胞接触神经递质的方式。)”可知,类似于我们学习时脑细胞接触神经递质的方式,所以此处指复制学习过程,所以replicated意为“复制”。故选A。
根据第四段中“The results showed that these non-brain cells could tell when the chemical pulses (脉冲), which imitated bursts of neurotransmitter in the brain, were given separately rather than simply extended. (结果表明,这些非脑细胞能够分辨出模仿大脑中神经递质爆发的化学脉冲是分别给出的,而不是简单延长的。)”可知,非脑细胞能够区分化学脉冲的模式。故选D。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Meanwhile, it suggests we will need to treat our body more like the brain in the future. For example, consider what our pancreas (胰腺) remembers about the pattern of our past meals to maintain healthy levels of blood sugar or consider what a cancer cell remembers about the pattern of chemotherapy (化疗). (同时,这表明我们将来需要像对待大脑一样对待我们的身体。例如,考虑我们的胰腺如何记住我们过去饮食的模式以维持健康的血糖水平,或者考虑癌细胞如何记住化疗的模式。)”可知,未来研究最有可能针对的领域是身体功能。故选C。
D
For more than 75 years, Oslo-based car dealership Harald A Møller has been importing Volkswagens, but early in 2024 it said goodbye to fossil fuel cars. Now all the passenger vehicles for sale in its showroom are electric (EV). “We think it’s wrong to advise a customer coming in here today to buy a petrol-powered car, because the future is electric,” says chief executive Ulf Tore Hekneby, as he walks around the cars on display.
Norway is the world leader when it comes to the take-up of electric cars, which last year accounted for 9 out of 10 new vehicles sold in the country. On the streets of Norway’s capital, Oslo, battery-powered cars aren’t a novelty, they’re common. Take a look around and you’ll soon notice that almost every other car has an “E” for “electric” on its license plate.
The Nordic nation of 5.5 million people has adopted EVs faster than any other country, and will soon to become the first to stop the sale of new fossil fuel cars. Last year, the number of electric cars on Norway’s roads outnumbered those powered by petrol for the first time. When diesel vehicles (柴油车) are included, electric cars account for almost a third of all on Norwegian roads. By contrast, in the UK electric cars made up only 20% of new car registrations in 2024. In the US, the figure was just 8% last year, up from 7.6%.
Key to Norway’s success has been long-term and predictable policies. Rather than banning fuel fossil vehicles, the government has guided consumer choices. In addition to higher taxes and registration fees on petrol-powered cars, VAT (增值税) and import duties were not imposed on low-emission cars. A string of favourable policies, like free parking, discounted road tolls and access to bus lanes, then followed.
Tesla, VW and Toyota, were Norway’s top-selling EV brands last year. Meanwhile, Chinese-owned brands — such as MG, BYD, Polestar and XPeng — now make up a combined 10% of the market, according to the Norwegian Road Federation. Norway, unlike the US and EU, has not imposed tariffs (关税) on Chinese EV imports.
32. What is the purpose of paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the main topic. B. To arouse readers’ curiosity.
C. To give the background of the story. D. To explain why Harald A Møller mainly sells EVs.
33. How does the author show the popularity of EVs in Norway?
A. By stating opinions. B. By giving statistics.
C. By quoting authorities. D. By analyzing the process.
34. What contributed most to the success in adopting electric vehicles in Norway?
A. A ban on fuel fossil vehicles.
B. Full freedom of consumer choices.
C. Consistent and stable policies over the long run.
D. Higher taxes and registration fees on petrol-powered cars.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Norway on Track to Be First to Go All-Electric B. Reasons Behind the Rise of Electric Vehicles
C. Norway’s Top-selling EV Brands D. The Future of Electric Cars
A 33. B 34. C 35. A

The rain poured down heavily, making a continuous drumming noise. I stared at the broken bicycle chain in despair. My hands trembled, not from the cold, but from the weight of Dad’s words echoing in my mind: “If you want independence, fix it yourself.”
Just a few hours earlier, I had stormed out of the house after a heated argument with Dad. “I’m seventeen! I’m not a little kid. I can deal with things by myself!” I shouted, slamming the door so hard that it seemed to shake the entire house. Now, I was stuck on the muddy path, my bike useless beside me. The rain kept falling hard, and the wind was blowing strongly, making it even harder to see. Pride and frustration were battling inside me like a wild storm. I had always prided myself on being independent, but now I felt helpless and alone.
Suddenly, through the heavy rain, I noticed an old man struggling to push his grocery cart up the steep hill. His umbrella was shaking dangerously in the strong wind, as if it was going to be torn away at any moment. I hesitated for a moment, but then something inside me clicked. I left my bike and ran towards him.
“Do you need some help?” I shouted over the noise of the rain. The old man looked up, surprise in his eyes, but he nodded gratefully. I grabbed the handle of the cart and helped him push it up the hill. The cart was heavy, but together we managed to make it stable. When we reached the top, he turned to me and smiled kindly. “Thank you, young man,” he said, his voice warm and sincere. Then he reached into his cart and handed me a slightly flattened apple. “Kindness is never wasted,” he added.
Those simple words struck me deeply. It reminds me that true independence isn’t about just refusing help. It’s about knowing when to lend a hand and when to accept help gracefully.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
After the old man left, I returned to my bike.

I was surprised to discover that l was feeling better and the rain didn’t seem so heavy any more. I got home at about 7 o’clock and, as usual, I rushed to the kitchen to prepare my supper.
Back home, Dad was waiting at the doorstep, a tool box in his hand. I was feeling quite happy because I was able to ride home all by myself. Dad had changed so much that I could hardly recognize him when he was right in front of me! And I was so sorry because the last time I saw him, I said such terrible words to him. I felt so embarrassed. My tears were like pearls now. I was so regretful. “Dad,” I called, “do you need help with dinner?” “Oh, Mary, I ...”

C. Gen Alpha. D. Gen Beta.

Ivy’s selfless spirit continues to inspire others proving that even with half a heart, she has the biggest heart of all.

For more than 75 years Oslo-based car dealership Harald A Møller has been importing Volkswagens, but early in 2024 it said goodbye to fossil fuel cars.

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
After the old man left, I returned to my bike.
