IT appears that everyone does. Mostly when people say that they never dream, what they really mean is that they don't remember their dreams, or they don't think their dreams are important. The reason behind is that they might have been made fun as a child when they first reported their dreams, or IT was so frightening that they just turned off dreaming completely. The other day, someone named Davis came to me and said that he used to be a great dreamer, but suddenly he's stopped having dreams. I asked him what had happened. IT turned out that his brother died of a heart attack, and he never expected that such a terrible thing would happen to a Young person. Generally, when there was some frightening event, and to dream about IT was too terrible, people prefer not to dream about IT. Actually, the worst thing you can do is stop dreaming, because that means that the bad experience was too painful to even appear in dreams as long as you're dreaming about IT. And even if the dreams are frightening, your mind is working on IT. My personal opinion about what dreams do is that they help us deal with our problems. We see certain patterns take place. And dreams when a person is hurt deep inside, when a person is seriously ill, or when a person has been really sad, if people turn off their dreams totally IT means they don't allow themselves to even think about IT. Finding cycling routes that are accessible by train is a great way to extend your rides avoid busy roads, and maximize the sights you can see. Here are some trips in beautiful locations.
Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail
The trail is an 87-mile pathway from Cleveland to Bolivar in northeast Ohio. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR) parallels the trail from Akron to Thornburg Station, a 31-mile stretch through Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The train is open to cyclists and their bikes at eight different historical boarding stations.
The towpa th trail hugs the outline of the original Ohio and Erie Canal, a 308-mile canal used to transport freight in the 1800s. Today, the trail passes numerous landmarks, bridges, museums, and villages.
Danube Cycle Path
The Danube Cycle Path is a long-distance bike path that follows the Danube River for about 745 miles, from Donaueschingen, Germany to Budapest, Hungary. The path is most popular in Austria featuring 245 scenic miles serviced by local and long-distance trains. Most cyclists choose to ride west to east with the flow of the river to take advantage of the natural slope and the flow of bicycle traffic.
Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail
The trail extends for 25 miles through vibrant woodlands next to the Lehigh River. A historic tourist train called the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway follows the trail, allowing cyclists to create a one-way ride rather than backtracking.
The rail trail is mostly flat and passes through Lehigh Gorge State Park. Along the way, riders will cross bridges and pass by swimming holes and scenic overlooks. While the train operates most days, the bike service is only offered one weekend a month from May to November.
21. What can be learned about Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail?
A. It shares most of its trail with the CVSR.
B. It offers a chance to see the local culture.
C. It passes through many small cities and villages.
D. It offers a view of the entire Ohio and Erie Canal.
22. Why do most cyclists choose to ride west to east along the Danube River?
A. To obey traffic rules. B. To appreciate scenic beauty.
C. To follow the flow of the river. D. To save effort and join other cyclists.
23. What do the three trips have in common?
A. They have a very long history. B. They pass through national parks.
C. They offer a view of water scenery. D. They provide bike service all year round.

A little-known species of bee has evolved an extra tooth for biting flesh and a gut. Typically, bees don’t eat meat. However, a species of stingless tropics bee has evolved the ability to do so, presumably due to intense competition for pollen (花粉).
Given their change in food choice, a team of UCR scientists wondered whether the vulture bees’ gut bacteria differed from those of vegetarian bees.
To track these changes, the researchers went to Costa Rica, where these bees reside. They set up fresh pieces of raw chicken as baits suspended from branches.
The baits successfully attracted vulture bees and related species that opportunistically feed on meat. Normally, stingless bees have baskets on their legs for collecting pollen. However, the team observed vulture bees using those same structures to collect the bait. “They had little chicken baskets,” said Quinn McFrederick, a UCR entomologist.
For comparison, the team also collected stingless bees that feed both on meat and flowers, and some that feed only on pollen. On analyzing the microbiomes (微生物) of all three bee types, they found the most extreme changes among exclusive meat-feeders.
“The vulture bee microbiome is enriched in acid-loving bacteria, which their relatives don’t have,” McFrederick said. “These bacteria are similar to ones found in actual vultures, presumably to help protect them from pathogens (病原体).”
“Although they can’t sting, they’re not all defenseless,” Yanega said. “They range from species that are innocuous to many that bite, to a few that produce blister-causing secretions in their jaws, causing the skin to erupt in painful sores.”
In addition, though they feed on meat, their honey is reportedly still sweet and edible. “They store the meat in special chambers that are sealed off for two weeks before they access it, and these chambers are separate from where the honey is stored,” Maccaro said.
The research team is planning to dig further into vulture bee microbiomes, hoping to learn about the genomes (基因组) of all bacteria as well as fungi and viruses in their bodies. Ultimately, they hope to learn more about the larger role that microbes play in overall bee health.
24. What might have caused the evolution of vulture bees?
A. Food shortage. B. Climate change.
C. Natural disasters. D. Human activities.
25. What can we learn about vulture bees?
A. They are harmless. B. They can’t produce honey.
C. They have baskets on their legs. D. They store their meat with honey.
26. What keeps the vulture bees healthy?
A. Their gut bacteria. B. Their food choices.
C. Their teeth for biting. D. Their body size.
27. What aspect of the study does the last paragraph focus on?
A. Its background. B. Its findings.
C. Its process. D. Its direction.

A Dartmouth-led study confirms the behavioral and physical effects of commuting on work quality. The study also shows how data from personal tech devices can help improve employee productivity and satisfaction.
Participants in the study used a Garmin vivo Smart 3 activity tracker and a smartphone-based sensing app to capture physiological and behavioral patterns during commuting.
Researchers analyzed data from 275 workers collected over a one-year period. The workers, close to 95% of whom drove, were monitored as they traveled. They were also monitored for 30-minute periods before and after commuting.
“We were able to build machine learning models to accurately predict job performance,” said Subigya Nepal, lead author of the paper. “The key was being able to objectively assess commuting stress along with the physiological reaction to the commuting experience.”
The study assessed workers using two recognized criteria of job performance: counterproductive work behavior and organizational citizenship behavior. Counterproductive behavior deliberately harms an organization, whereas citizenship behaviors are beneficial. Baselines for both measures were established regularly through self-reporting questionnaires.
“Compared to low performers, high performers display greater consistency in the time they arrive and leave work,” said Pino Audia, a co-author of the study. “This dramatically reduces the negative impacts of commuting variability and suggests that the secret to high performance may lie in sticking to better routines.”
This is the first study using unobtrusive wearables and smartphones to predict worker performance from commuting data alone. According to the researchers, previous studies have used more noticeable and expensive technology — such as headmounts and electrodes — to understand the commuting experience, but no study has previously connected commuting data with the impact on workplace performance.
The study also demonstrates that not all commutes can be bad. The research confirms that commuters who are involved in active forms of commuting typically experience increased productivity at work.
In the future, the researchers expect that ubiquitous sensing technology will be able to detect commuter stress and offer tailored interventions such as music, podcasts, connecting them to friends and family, or offering tips for short stops.
28. What’s special about the study?
A. It links commuting data to work quality.
B. It creates two criteria of job performance.
C. It uses Tech devices to interpret commuting.
D. It uses expensive technology to predict work efficiency.
29. Which paragraphs focus on the process of the research?
A. Paragraphs 1 and 2. B. Paragraphs 2 to 3. C. Paragraphs 3 to 5. D. Paragraphs 5 and 6.
30. What does the underlined word unobtrusive in Paragraph 7 probably mean?
A. not accessible. B. not noticeable. C. not acceptable. D. not predictable.
31. According to the study, which of the following helps improve work quality?
A. Developing good commuting habits. B. Increasing commuting stress.
C. Choosing new means of commute. D. Avoid commuting at rush hours.

Digital nomads are remote workers from rich countries who move every few months in search of tropical climes cultural experiences and cheaper living. During the pandemic these travellers, often working in tech, flocked abroad. Top destinations are in Asia and Europe, but Latin America holds its own. Mexico City was the seventh-most-popular place in 2023.
Many residents are hostile to digital nomads. They see wealthy workers living like kings and pushing up prices. In Cuauhtémoc rents rose by 35% between June 2022 and 2023, compared with 14% for the city as a whole. Cultural complaints follow. Tech bros speak only English, which can annoy locals.
Yet demonising (妖魔化) nomads is wrong-headed. Rent rises are largely thanks to other factors. Medellín needs around 14,500 new homes this year, but is building only some 2,000, according to Camacol Antioquia, a trade body. The link between short-term rentals and the housing market is overblown, says Eugene Towle of Softec, a Mexican research firm. Airbnb takes up just 3% of the capital’s rental housing.
Overall, like other immigrants, nomads bring more benefits than downsides. Teleworkers put their earnings into the local economy. In Medellín, they spend $1,400 a month on average, compared with $575 for a local. Josh, from Scotland, says he spends $1,500 on rent and another $800 a month on a chef, kick-boxing instructor and salsa teacher.
Highly-skilled immigrants, as most digital nomads are, boost innovation too. Newcomers’ ideas help develop products and introduce their host cities to global markets. In Medellín, Joel Elster, a Brit, trains locals in sales. One of them now earns $5,000 a month, he claims. And it is hard to pin cultural decline or crime on nomads. “They don’t come to destroy the city because they live here,” says Mr González.
Officials like Mr González see their job as showing locals the benefits and managing the downsides. Mexico City, which was filled with global talent long before the laptop crowd turned up, is taking a more laissez-faire approach. Foreigners made Mexico’s capital lively throughout the 20th century.
32. What’s the main cause of the rent rise?
A. Digital nomads. B. Tight market. C. Illegal letting. D. Poor management.
33. What can we learn about digital nomads from the passage?
A. They discriminate against locals. B. They bring more harm than good.
C. They promote the local economy. D. They weaken national confidence.
34. The author illustrates that nomads promote innovation mainly by ______.
A. doing surveys B. using an example C. reasoning logically D. analyzing data
35. What does the underlined word laissez-faire mean in the last paragraph?
A. Extreme. B. Inactive. C. Indifferent. D. Open.

Michelle finished playing the last note, then bowed to the stuffed animals (填充玩偶) on her bed. “There, three times in a row with no mistakes,” she said. “I just hope I can play it that well at the recital (演奏会).”
In just an hour she would be playing her first solo (独奏), and the thought was giving her butterflies. “You’re lucky you don’t have to play by yourself in front of everybody,” she said, smoothing Lea the Leopard’s spotted fur and patting See-more Giraffe on the head. Then, gazing down at the smiling face of Zoey the Zebra, Michelle scolded, “You’re a big help. How can you be so happy at a time like this?” Looking at the animals, she sighed, “I wish you could all come with me.” She gave them one last glance and went to join her parents in the car.
On the way to school. Michelle kept quiet. “Is my favorite first-grader getting nervous?” her dad asked, smiling. Michelle didn’t answer. She was trying to picture what it would be like to play in front of all those audience. “You’ll do fine,” said Mom. “The first time is always the hardest.”
When they arrived at the auditorium, Michelle headed backstage. She handed her violin to her teacher for tuning. Looking out, she saw all the seats were filled. Now her stomach was really doing flip-flops. Nervously she took her violin from Mrs. Allen and sat with the other students onstage. She gulped (大口吸气) as her teacher picked up the microphone to begin the program. One by one the students played their pieces. Finally, Michelle heard Mrs. Allen announce, “Our last student tonight will be Michelle Merrick, who will play Bach’s Minuet in G Major.”

A. To sleep better.
B. To recover from illnesses.

【答案】17. A 18. B 19. A 20. C
【解析】
【原文】M: We’re glad to have Dr Garfield to talk to us today about dreams. Let me start by asking the first question. Does everyone dream?
W: It appears that everyone does. Mostly, when people say that they never dream, what they really mean is that they don’t remember their dreams or they don’t think their dreams are important. The reason behind is that they might have been made fun of as a child when they first reported their dreams or it was so frightening that they just turned off dreaming completely. The other day someone named Davis came to me and said that he used to be a great dreamer. But suddenly, he stopped having dreams. I asked him what had happened. It turned out that his brother died of a heart attack. And he never expected that such a terrible thing would happen to a young person. Generally, when there was some frightening event and to dream about it was too terrible, people prefer not to dream about it. Actually, the worst thing you can do is stop dreaming, because it means that the bad experience was too painful to even appear in dreams. As long as you’re dreaming about it and even if the dreams are frightening, your mind is working on it. My personal opinion about what dreams do is that they help us deal with our problems. We see certain patterns take place in dreams when a person is hurt deep inside, when a person is seriously ill or when a person has been really sad. If people turn off their dreams totally, it means they don’t allow themselves to even think about it.

Finding cycling routes that are accessible by train is a great way to extend your rides, avoid busy roads, and maximize the sights you can see.

Digital nomads are remote workers from rich countries who move every few months in search of tropical climes, cultural experiences and cheaper living.

Her eyes were filled with tears. She wiped the tears away. When she opened her eyes again, everything looked blurry. It seemed that all the audience had changed into animals. A young man in the front looked just like see-more Giraffe, and she was sure that she saw her smiling Zoey, the Zebra.
More relaxed now, she remembered her piece. It was almost like being at home. She remembered her piece. As she played, she looked at the crowd. Some of the animals seemed to be changing back into people. But Michelle was no longer nervous. The listeners looked friendly now. Finally, she played the last note. She took a big bow. She had played her first piece!
