Peking Opera has been a game changer for Swedish actor Timothy Pilotti, which led him to China and shaped his passion for cultural exchanges. The connection between the 37-year-old actor and Peking Opera began with a childhood love for films starring Jackie Chan, who studied Peking Opera when he was young. “His films blended a lot of acrobatics, rhythm and comedy into the fight scenes. It’s not just about defeating someone — it’s about telling a story and creatively fighting,” Pilotti says. Pilotti decided to become an actor at an early age, studying at acting schools and majoring in physical theater at a Finnish university. The university required students to study a traditional theater form abroad on an exchange program during the third year, which became his first opportunity to study Peking Opera in China. “Some of my classmates went to India, for example, but my dream was to go to China — it was a no-brainer,” he says. In 2009, he and two other students arrived at the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in Beijing to study Peking Opera for six months. Although he had no Chinese language skills or background in Peking Opera, teachers from the academy helped him grasp the essence of the performing art form through rigorous teaching and setting high standards. He worked very hard on his courses and was willing to take advice from others. In 2010 and 2014, he returned to the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts to continue studying Peking Opera, which he later merged into his original productions in Sweden. Traditional Chinese stories inspire him. He has created two theater pieces in recent years — a story about the Monkey King, the mighty character from the novel Journey to the West; and Jingwei, a mythological character who drowns and turns into a bird, determined to fill the sea. “My dream now is to do more cultural exchanges and maybe create a show where Chinese Peking Opera and Swedish actors perform together,” he says. 4. What contributed to Pilotti’s connection with Peking Opera? A. His passion for Chinese culture. B. His love for Jackie Chan’s movies. C. His family tradition of learning Peking Opera. D. His interest in acrobatics and fighting skills. 5. Why did Pilotti come to China to study Peking Opera? A. Because he had a childhood love for films starring Jackie Chan. B. Because his films needed to blend a lot of acrobatics, rhythm and comedy into the fight scenes. C. Because some of his classmates went to India to perfect their acting skills. D. Because it was required in an exchange program to learn a traditional theater. 6. What can we know about Pilotti’s study in China? A. He only stayed in China for six months. B. He couldn’t speak Chinese and had no previous understanding of Peking Opera. C. He found it difficult to learn Peking Opera because no one would like to help him. D. He couldn’t bear his teachers’ very high standards. 7. Which of the following words can best describe Pilotti? A. Funny and modest. B. Determined and ambitious. C. Independent and optimistic. D. Reliable and intelligent. C Have you ever been bitten by mosquitoes on a summer evening and wondered why they seem to target humans so persistently? A recent study published in a top scientific journal has uncovered a fascinating discovery: two hormones in female mosquitoes control their urge to bite. Female mosquitoes need blood to help their eggs develop, a process linked to their body cycles. Before searching for a host, their bodies produce more NPF, a hormone that makes them extremely hungry for blood. Think of it like a switch turning on their biting instinct. Once they bite and drink blood. NPF levels drop quickly, and their interest in biting fades. Scientists wanted to test if NPF really controls biting behavior. They used special tools to change the genes of female mosquitoes so they couldn’t produce NPF. The results were surprising: these mosquitoes showed 78% less interest in humans compared to normal mosquitoes. Lead scientist Dr. Li Hua explained, “Without NPF, mosquitoes lose the motivation to bite. It’s like turning off their hunger completely.” Another hormone, RYamide, acts like a brake. After a mosquito bites, RYamide levels rise and make the mosquito feel full. In experiments, when scientists gave RYamide to mosquitoes without eggs, their desire to bite decreased by 65%. However, this effect was weaker in mosquitoes that were carrying eggs. This shows that a mosquito’s egg-laying state also affects how much it wants to bite. Mosquitoes spread serious diseases like dengue and Zika, which make millions of people sick every year. Current methods like pesticides have problems — mosquitoes are becoming resistant to them, and they can harm the environment. This new study offers hope. By targeting these hormones, scientists might develop better ways to stop mosquitoes from spreading diseases. “We could create traps that trick mosquitoes into thinking they’re full,” said Dr. Michael O’Connor, another researcher. As global warming expands mosquito habitats, this research offers timely solutions. Future applications may include gene-edited mosquitoes unable to produce NPF or sprays that mimic RYamide to block biting behavior. Understanding these hormones not only solves a mystery of nature but also brings us closer to protecting public health. Next time you swat a mosquito, remember: science is working to make those bites a thing of the past. 8. What is the primary function of NPF in female mosquitoes? A. It helps eggs develop after feeding. B. It signals the body to start searching for blood. C. It increases hunger after blood consumption. D. It blocks the effects of RYamide. 9. What can be inferred about NPF? A. NPF is essential for mosquito survival. B. NPF makes mosquitoes hungry for blood. C. NPF controls biting behavior. D. NPF levels increase sharply after biting. 10. How might scientists use hormones to stop mosquito-related diseases? A. Increase NPF to cut mosquito feeding. B. Use RYamide traps to kill mosquitoes. C. Edit genes for NPF or RYamide control. D. Block RYamide to make mosquitoes bite more. 11. What is the suitable title for the passage? A. A slow process of NPF experiments. B. A helpful hormone for egg development. C. A practical solution to global warming. D. A scientific finding in mosquito control. D AI-generated Optical Illusions Can Sort Humans From Robots ARTIFICIAL intelligence programs can create optical illusions that other AIs are unable to recognise, creating a useful test that can differentiate humans from robots. A cat-and-mouse game has been played out for almost two decades between website developers, who want to keep robots out of their sites, and the hackers who want to bypass those protections. Websites deploy CAPTCHA tests that are designed to be easy for humans to pass, but that trip up software. While these have become trickier to crack, the pace of AI development means that robots have quickly gained the ability to solve any new test. Now, Yuekang Li at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, and his colleagues have developed a new test they call Illusion CAPTCHA. It uses generative models to create optical illusions (错觉) that combine an input image and a prompt. For example, given a photograph of an apple and the prompt “sunny cityscape”, the AI might create an image of a city in the shape of an apple. For the test, subjects are shown these images and asked if they feature an illusory aspect, such as combined images or hidden test. When 10 people attempted the test, they passed 83 per cent of the time when illusionary text was added to an image, and 88 per cent of the time when illusionary images were incorporated. But neither GPT nor Gemini, the two AI programs assessed, successfully passed any. Li says the test relies on the unique way the human brain processes visual information. The gap between what AI and humans are capable of is of use to researchers looking to improve AI, he says. “We’re trying to make AIs closer to humans, closer and closer, and the more similar to humans they are, the harder it is for us to differentiate,” says Li. He expects AI to eventually become more capable than humans even at visual tests, which will force CAPTCHAs to look for things that AIs can do but humans cannot. However, AIs will then learn to pretend to be unable to do these tasks. “I think it’s going to be a problem forever,” he says. 12. What does the underlined phrase “trip up” mean? A. Speed up. B. Improve. C. Obstruct. D. Ignore. 13. Which of the following statements best describes the function of generative models in Illusion CAPTCHA? A. To modify existing images according to users’ prompts. B. To sort input images from users’ prompts. C. To integrate an input image with a prompt to generate visual illusions. D. To produce diverse visual effects to make the image vivid. 14. What does the experiment result in paragraph 4 indicate? A. Humans are less reliable than AI in solving CAPTCHAs. B. Illusion CAPTCHA effectively blocks robots. C. AI will soon outperform humans in visual tasks. D. Optical illusions are irrelevant to cybersecurity. 15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. AI will eventually surpass humans in all visual tasks. B. It will always be a challenge to distinguish AI from humans. C. The gap between AI and humans is becoming smaller. D. CAPTCHA tests are no longer effective for identifying AI. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 As companies and employees adapted to new ways of working, technology played a crucial role in making remote work possible. I couldn’t believe someone could be so cruel. I ran as fast as I could to the nearest teacher. My voice was shaking when I told the teacher about it. But he just sighed and waved me away, like this kind of thing was normal. I decided to do something myself. When I got back to the mud. I saw the two halves of the worm were still alive. I quickly picked them up and then secretly put them in my jeans pocket. Before lunch, I quietly walked to the corner with the class’s lunch boxes. I looked for the one belonging to the boy who cut the worm. I was lucky and found his lunch box quickly. I made sure no one was watching and put the worm pieces into his lunch box. When the boy saw the worm in his lunch box, he screamed loudly. The lunchroom teacher came quickly. I should have felt good, but I felt guilty instead. I gathered my courage and told the teacher. “Sorry! Sir, it was me.” The boy looked at me angrily. One teacher tried to calm him down, and the other told me to go to the headmaster’s office. 【答案】4. B 5. D 6. B 7. 【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11. 【答案】12. C 13. C 14. B 15. Headmaster Smith was strict. My friend said he could make students tell their bad things just by looking at them. And those who did wrong had to write lots of apologies. After hearing the headmaster’s reply, I walked in. I felt very nervous. I waited for severe criticism. But what surprised me was that he didn’t blame me. He asked me to sit down and handed me a glass of water. He looked at me gently and asked me why I did it. Watching his expression, I felt relaxed. I told him the whole thing. I didn’t think I did anything wrong. I waited for his response, feeling uneasy inside. Headmaster Smith expressed his understanding and pointed out my fault. He said he didn’t agree with the boy’s action either, but my revenge method was wrong. Using violence to counter violence is not the correct way to solve problems. He asked me to talk to the boy and told him not to treat animals cruelly. After listening to him, I understood what I should do. I thanked him and walked out of the room. I walked towards that boy. This time, I planned to choose the right method to solve the problem. 词汇激活 行为类 ①同意:agree with/approve ②解决:solve/resolve ③和某人交谈:talk to sb./talk with sb. 情绪类 ①紧张的:nervous/anxious ②(使)吃惊:surprise/amaze 【点睛】[高分句型1] But what surprised me was that he didn’t blame me.(由what引导的主语从句和that引导的表语从句) [高分句型2] After listening to him, I understood what I should do.(由what引导的宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
