An international team of astronomers used a database combining observations from the best telescopes in the world____1______(detect) the signal from the active supermassive black holes of dying galaxies(星系)in the early universe. The____2______(appear) of these active supermassive black holes is related to changes in the host galaxy, This means a black hole could have far-reaching effects____3_____the evolution of its host galaxy.
The Milky Way Galaxy ___4___ we live includes stars of various ages, including stars still forming. But in some other galaxies, ___5___(know) as elliptical(椭圆的) galaxies, all of the stars are old and about the same age. This indicates that early in__6__(they) histories elliptical galaxies had a period of rich star formation that suddenly ended. Why this star formation stopped in some galaxies,__7___not others is not well understood. One possibility is that a supermassive black hole disrupts (扰乱) the gas in some galaxies,___8____(create)an environment unsuitable for star formation.
To test this theory , astronomers look at distant galaxies, Due to the limited speed of light, it takes time for light to travel across the void of space. For example,, the light we saw last night from an object 10 billion light years away ____9______(travel) for 10 billion years to reach Earth. Thus the light we see today shows us what the galaxy looked like when the light left that galaxy 10 billion years ago. So looking at distant galaxies is like looking back in time. But the longer distance also means that distant galaxies look____10___(small), making study more difficult.

In the endless sky, the unaided human eye should be able to perceive several thousand stars on a clear, dark night. Unfortunately, growing light pollution has impeded people from the nightly view.
New citizen-science-based research throws alarming light on the problem of “sky glow”-the diffuse illumination (漫射照明) of the night sky that is a form of light pollution. The data came from crowd-sourced observations collected from around the world as part of Globe at Night, a program developed by astronomer Connie Walker.
Light pollution has harmful effects on the practice of astronomy but also on human health and wildlife, since it disturbs the cycle from sunlight to starlight that biological systems have evolved alongside. Furthermore, the loss of visible stars is a great loss of human cultural heritage. Until relatively recently, humans throughout history had an impressive view of the starry night sky, and the effect of this nightly spectacle is evident in ancient cultures.
Globe at Night has been gathering data on star visibility since 2006. Anyone can submit observations through the Globe at Night web application. Participants record which one best matches what they can see in the sky without any telescopes or other instruments.
Researchers find that the loss of visible stars indicates an increase in sky brightness of 9.6% per year while roughly 2% is measured by satellites. Existing satellites are not well suited to measuring sky glow as it appears to humans, because they can not detect wavelengths shorter than 500 nanometers. White LEDs, with shorter wavelengths under 500 nanometers, now are increasingly commonly used in outdoor lighting. But human eyes are more sensitive to these shorter wavelengths at nighttime. Space-based instruments do not measure light from windows, either. But these sources are significant contributors to sky glow as seen from the ground.
“The increase in sky glow over the past decade underlines the importance of redoubling our efforts and developing new strategies to protect dark skies,” said Walker. “The Globe at Night dataset is necessary in our ongoing evaluation of changes in sky glow, and we encourage whoever can to get involved to help protect the starry night sky.”
1. What does the underlined word “impeded” in the first paragraph mean?
A. separated. B. demanded. C. disabled. D. protected.
2. What does the loss of visible stars lead to?
A. Poorer human health. B. Less nightly culture elements of the sky.
C. More delicate biological systems. D. Fewer wildlife species.
3. What does the author stress in paragraph 5?
A. White LEDs are widely used. B. Shorter wavelengths are hard to detect.
C. Satellites play a vital role. D. Crowd sourced data are invaluable.
4. What can be inferred from Walker’s words?
A. Their consistent efforts pay off. B. More participants are expected to join in.
C. The sky glow has been over-emphasized. D. The dataset needs to be updated.

How many bosses could rely on their employees threatening to quit in mass if they were abruptly forced out? Sam Altman received such a show of support from more than 700 staff after he was fired from Open AI that he was swiftly restored to his position by the board. But this level of loyalty is not typical and may not always be a good thing.
Management experts say staff who are loyal to their employer are inclined to invest more time and effort in their jobs, helping to create an engaged and higher performing workplace. In turn they receive promotions and pay rises. They have a greater sense of belonging and potentially a longer career at the same organization. But it is not all rosy. People who are too loyal are more likely to take actions that are deemed wrong to keep their jobs and protect their employer, according to a 2021 academic paper. They might overlook wrongdoing and be less likely to expose corruption. Loyalty is sometimes seen as such a force for good that it can be used to justify bad behavior.
Often companies and senior bosses are the real winner of employee loyalty. Research led by Matthew Stanley at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business published this year, found that managers were more likely to exploit loyal individuals. Stanley recruited almost 1,400 managers to read about a fictional 29-year-old employee called John, who worked for a company that was trying to keep costs down. They had to decide how willing they would be to ask John to work longer hours and take on more work without more pay. Researchers created various situations including labelling John as loyal versus other traits such as honest and fair. Managers were more willing to ask loyal John to take on the burden of unpaid work.
However, Consultancy Gallup’s latest state of the workplace report showed that half of the 122, 416 employees who took part in a global survey were looking out for new work. “You can’t guarantee anyone will stick around these days,” says a consultant who advises boards. This is particularly true of younger generations. They trust their bosses less and are not as patient when it comes to career progression, seeing little benefit in keeping their heads down and following orders if they do not see results quickly.
1. What does the author want to say by mentioning Sam Altman in Paragraph 1?
A. Open AI’s staff loyalty is quite high. B. Sam Altman could count on his employees.
C. Staff loyalty’s rosy side in the work. D. This level of loyalty is always good.
2. How did Matthew Stanley conduct his research?
A. Through global surveys concerning a fictional employee named John.
B. By creating different situations to ask John ta take on more unpaid work.
C. By recruiting managers to read fiction about work traits like loyal and honest.
D. By asking managers to make decisions about work arrangements of John.
3. What can you learn from the passage?
A. Younger generations are more patient towards their employers.
B. Loyalty can be used by management to exploit employees.
C. Employees who are loyal are more likely to report wrongdoing.
D. Loyalty to an employer always leads to a positive work environment.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. How Job Loyalty Affects the Work Environment?
B. Does Work Loyalty Help Career Progress More Quickly?
C. Are Loyal Employees More Likely to be Promoted?
D. Why Staff Loyalty is Not Always a Good Thing?

China’s Qiantang River is famous for a unique natural phenomenon, a wavy pattern tide that was observed in 2021.
The Qiantang River’s estuary (河口) in Zhejiang Province has long been famous for having the strongest tidal waves in the world. 1 However, in 2021, researchers discovered another natural phenomenon unique to this estuary. Under specific conditions, the tide comes in waves that look like fish scales (鳞) on the water’s surface. 2
The exact reason for this unusual tide pattern’s occurrence is still being discussed. Different sources give different reasons. 3
“The area is also known to have rotating currents, meaning that the tide does not simply move inland and then change its direction, Nicole Sharp writes. 4 This unique characteristic creates an ideal environment for waves to crash into each other at various angles. Two sets of waves meet at a crossroads, creating cool wave patterns.”
According to the media, astronomy, topography, and wind directions are the main factors that produce the “fish scale tide”. 5 So does the shape of the estuary-very narrow at the river mouth, but then very wide where it meets the sea.
Whatever the exact necessary conditions for the occurrence of the “fish scale tide” may be, one thing is for sure-it rarely happens.
A. People always get endangered there.
B. At times, they can get as tall as nine meters.
C. The phenomenon is known as the “fish scale tide”.
D. Besides, the weather conditions are of great importance.
E. Apparently, the moon and the sun play a big part in the phenomenon.
F. For example, FyFluidDyamics believes that the phenomenon is the result of a series of factors.
G. Instead, a rotating current can change its direction during a tidal cycle without changing its speed.

Sharon Roseman was five years old when her world changed forever. She was playing Blind Man’s Bluff with friends outside her house. When she removed her blindfold (眼罩), she couldn’t recognize where she was. From that moment on, Roseman has been lost every day of her life.
Roseman is not alone in her experience. As an adult living in Denver, Colorado, in 2008, Roseman was diagnosed with a rare and newly discovered condition called Developmental Topographical Disorientation(DTD), which is a disorder that dramatically affects people’s abilities to navigate their familiar environment.
Dr. Giuseppe Iaria of the University of Calgary in Canada is credited with first identifying DTD.He confirms that odd as it sounds, people with DTD have no brain damage. He thinks genetic factors are likely to be responsible for it.
Paul Dudchenko, from the University of Stirling in the United Kingdom, has what he calls a place-cell theory. He says we get lost because all our hippocampal cells appear to be connected to landmarks. “They use things in the environment to orientate (确定方向) themselves and create a cognitive map,” he says. “If we don’t have things in the outside world to update the cognitive map, then it is likely to error.” That’s why people who are lost in a snowstorm, for instance, tend to go in circles. They think they’re heading in the right direction, but without external reference points their brain is unable to form a cognitive map, so they naturally tend to get lost.
“There seems to be a systematic error in the way people with DTD place landmarks in their mind,” Dudchenko says. How exactly this happens is still under investigation, but Dudchenko thinks the answer lies in the relationship between the various regions of the brain responsible for spatial cognition (空间认知).
For his part, Giuseppe Iaria is continuing with his research. Some of his recent work has focused on the role genes play in DTD.As well as helping sufferers of DTD, Iaria believes his research will offer an explanation for why some people are better at finding their way than others. While top researchers have more to learn, they are confident the answers won’t stay lost in the complexity of the brain forever.
1. Why does the author mention Roseman’s experience?
A. To inform us of a sad story. B. To give us background information.
C. To introduce a rare disease. D. To support the author’s argument.
2. What trouble would people with DTD have?
A. Navigating novel and unfamiliar environments. B. Remembering the layout of their neighborhood.
C. Understanding the detailed information on a map. D. Recalling the names of familiar places and people.
3. What does Dudchenko say about DTD?
A. It gives rise to severe brain damage. B. It happens when cognitive map fails.
C. It connects one’s brain and cognition. D. It arises from a systematic genetic error.
4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Genes play the most important role in DTD.
B. The ability to find one’s way can be improved.
C. Iaria’s research has already helped sufferers of DTD.
D. The truth about DTD will be brought to light someday.

Life doesn’t always seem fair. Some people are just born with the ability to attract anyone they meet easily. Well, it might seem like a magical power, but actually there are various factors at work. ____1_____ The answer is: to a large extent, yes you can.
But first, the bad news. People initially judge each other based purely on physical appearance With just a glimpse of a face, people make snap judgments about each other’s likeability, trustworthiness and confidence. How should we deal with this? ____2____ People perceive a smiling face as more trustworthy, warmer and sociable. It sounds like common sense, doesn’t it? Smile and others will smile with you.
What other tricks might we have?_____3____ Consequently, three things we can do to signal that we are not a threat: raise our eyebrows quickly, tilt (仰起) our heads slightly, and once again, to smile.
So we’ve looked at body language, but of course what you say is hugely important too, unless you want to just stand there grinning foolishly. The golden rule of friendship is if you make people feel good about themselves, they’re going to like you. In other words, you should not talk about yourself and all your wonderful achievements. ____4____
Finally, finding common ground is good to form a connection. Charming people are particularly skilled at seeking out shared interests or experiences to bond with others. Simple things like asking where someone’s from really can open up a discussion and allow you to find areas in common. And if all else fails, you can fall back on that most British of topics: the weather.____5 ___
A. It can break the ice.
B. So, can you develop exceptional charm?
C. There’s one incredibly basic tool: your smile.
D. Alternatively, you need to display interest in them.
E. What effective strategies can we employ to become charming?
F. Our brains frequently scan the surroundings for signs of friend or enemy.
G. Mutual interests are the foundation for building connections with others.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Taimur and Daniyal were twins and had been my next door neighbors since I was five years old. Not only did we go to the same school, but our evenings and weekends were spent together too. It was like we were inseparable. I never felt that I needed any friends other than them. Unexpectedly, one evening their parents shared the news of them moving to another country-Australia.
I was shocked to realize that we would never be together, started recalling all the good times we had spent together, such as playing in the school breaks, the play dates, and all the fun things we did. Was it all going to end?
When we had been through so many highs and lows together, shared secrets and supported each other through thick and thin, their moving away felt like my heart was being taken away. The news of their departure left me feeling empty and lost.
I was thinking about the biggest change that I was going to face in a few days, it was a difficult pill to swallow, but I knew I must move on. Though it wasn’t easy at first, I was trying my level best to beat the mental pain I was in.
After hearing the news, every day felt like a struggle. The school didn’t feel the same; the lunchbreaks had no purpose. Soon there would be no one to compare the test marks with, homework remarks would not excite me like before, and so on. I couldn’t help but feel lost and alone already.
