Jiang, who holds a master’s degree in education from Johns Hopkins University in the U.S., now teaches at the Aerospace City School in Beijing.

“Thanks to China’s reform and opening - up, young people now have more chances to travel abroad and understand the differences between China and other countries,” she explains.
During her time in the U.S., Jiang noticed many local media reports were biased (有偏见的) and based on old views. “If they traveled widely in China, they would see how much the country has changed over the past 10 or 20 years,” she adds.

Islands are always changing shapes. Sometimes you can see the changes happening. A volcano can erupt (爆发) and shoot out red hot lava (岩浆). When the lava reaches the ocean, it cools and forms new land. ▲ .
But most changes are hard to see. Storms and wind blow dirt and sand from one side of the island and pile them up on another side. Oceans wash away earth and rocks from one beach and carry them to another. Most islands change shapes slowly, a little bit at a time.
People on some small ocean islands are worried. They think their islands are changing shapes too fast. On some islands, the whole beaches have been washed away. Places that used to be dry have been flooded. In Solomon Islands, a country made up of small islands in the Pacific Ocean, five whole islands have disappeared underwater.
Why are so many islands becoming smaller and smaller?
Scientists say people cause pollution. They burn gas and coal for cars and factories, they cut down rainforests, and more. The pollution stores heat and makes Earth hotter. Warmer temperatures melt the ice at the North and South Poles. The melting ice flows into the ocean and raises sea levels.
But there is hope. Scientists are looking for ways to stop sea levels rising and they are also looking for clean ways to run cars and factories. People are helping too, by recycling, planting trees, driving less, and wasting less. Together, we can stop the world’s islands from disappearing.
33. Which is the best answer to fill in the blank in the first paragraph?
A. The lava melts B. The ocean rises C. The island grows D. The volcano dies
34. In Paragraph 3, how does the writer show the fast changing of the islands?

C. By asking questions. D. By listing numbers.

C. Various pollution. D. Cold temperature and sea water.
36. What is the best title for this passage?

C. Polluted Islands. D. Moving Islands.

When a theatre puts on a show, someone has to change the stage into a castle, or a forest, or a school. That person is the set designer. But before building the real set, they create a small model.
Lizzie Bracken designed the set for a play called You Think It’s Easy Being the Tooth Fairy? at Lifeline Theater in Chicago.
Ophelia: Why do you make models?
Lizzie: Most set designers starts with a model. It’s a fast way to see what the set will look like. You can take a model apart and put it back together and play with it and make sure everything works before you build the real one.
I start with a lot of drawings. Once I can see what it looks like, I make a white model, no color, so we can see if all the pieces work. Then I add colors and decoration.
Ophelia: What’s the model made of?
Lizzie: Foam core (泡沫板) and illustration (插图) board. I measure, cut, and glue them together. For furniture, I buy miniatures from dollhouse or model train shops. These stores have surprising items like trees, lamps, and tiny furniture.
Ophelia: The play is about a three - inch - tall tooth fairy. How did you make an adult actor look small?
Lizzie: Oh, we used creative tricks! The prop (道具) designer, Jenny Pinson, made some huge quarters (25 - cent coins) for the fairy to collect. To her, these coins looked like dinner plates—heavy enough for weightlifting!
We also built a giant four - foot puppet hand. The fairy would open it to take out a huge tooth. A giant cat paw swiping at them added more fun. Just the few props helped the audience imagine the fairy’s tiny world.
Ophelia: What’s your next project?
Lizzie: Maybe Frankenstein … that would be so fun to work on.
Ophelia: Thanks for sharing!
37. What is the type of this passage?
A. A letter. B. A play. C. An interview. D. A story.
38. What does Lizzie do?
A. A set designer. B. A prop designer. C. An actress. D. A model.
39. What is the right order of Lizzie’s making a model?
①make a white model ②colour and decorate it ③draw a picture ④check all the pieces
A. ①③④② B. ③①④② C. ①③②④ D. ③①②④
40. How did Lizzie make a grow - up actor appear three inches tall?
A. She added special lighting effects.
B. She asked actors to stand on boxes.
C. She used mirrors to make images smaller.
D. She used giant props like coins and puppet hands.

At Beijing New Oriental Yangzhou Foreign Language School, there’s a special club called Tongcao Flowers Paper Art Workshop. It recently won the first prize at a school event, surprising everyone with thousands of beautiful paper flowers made by students and teachers.
Making tongcao flowers takes patience. The team spent 60 days cutting tongcao paper (made from soft plant wood) into tiny pieces. “The hardest part is shaping wet petals (花瓣),” said 14 - year - old Ren Daiyang. “The paper dries in 10 seconds, so I must work quickly!” First, cut paper into 3mm - 5mm strips. Then, shape the wet paper into petals, and put them together like a flower. Finally, they paint details like stamens (花蕊) with food coloring.
13 - year - old Zhang Shiyu spends over 2 hours on each flower. “My first flower looked like a duckling!” she laughed. “But now I’ve made 50. This art teaches me not to give up.” Her classmate He Liyan, 14, added, “It’s cool to keep a 300 - year - old skill alive.”
Tongcao flowers are Yangzhou’s intangible cultural heritage (since 2007). The white paper’s softness lets creators shape it into peonies, plum blossoms, even butterflies. The club’s 2m × 3m display board at the event looked like a spring garden—prove that young hands can protect old traditions.
