If you are a painting lover, you shouldn’t miss the following four famous masterpieces which have stood the test of time.
The Arnolfini Portrait
Jan van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait, an oil painting on wood produced in 1434, in which a man and a woman hold hands with a window behind him and a bed behind her, is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces in the National Gallery, London. This painting is as visually interesting as it is famed. It is also an informative document in fifteenth-century society, through Van Eyck’s heavy use of symbolism — while husbands went out to engage in business, wives concerned themselves with domestic duties.
The Starry Night
Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night, oil on canvas, a moderately abstract landscape painting of an expressive night sky over a small hillside village, during his 12-month stay at the mental hospital near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France between 1889 and 1890. When the Museum of Modern Art in New York City purchased the painting from a private collector in 1941, it was not well known, but it has since become one of Van Gogh’s most famous works.
The Harvesters
The Harvesters is an oil painting on wood completed by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1565. It depicts the harvest time which most commonly occurs within the months of August and September. Nicolaes Jonghelinck, a merchant banker and art collector from Antwerp, commissioned this painting. The painting has been at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City since 1919.
Guernica
Guernica, a large black-and-white oil painting, was painted by the Cubist Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso in 1937. The title “Guernica” refers to the city that was bombed by Nazi planes during the Spanish Civil War. The painting depicts the horrors of war and as a result, has come to be an anti-war symbol and a reminder of the tragedies of war. Today, the painting is housed at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofaí in Madrid.
1 Which of the following paintings was produced earliest?
A. The Arnolfini Portrait. B. The Starry Night.
C. The Harvesters. D. Guernica.
2. What do we know about the painting The Starry Night?
A. It was painted on wood in oil. B. It described the painter’s life in hospital.
C. It wasn’t widely recognized before the 1940s. D. It was given away to the museum.
3. Who created the painting representing the massive catastrophe (灾难) the Nazism brought to people?
A. Pieter Bruegel the Elder. B. Vincent van Gogh.
C. Jan van Eyck. D. Pablo Picasso.

根据四幅画创作的时间“Jan van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait, an oil painting on wood produced in 1434, (Jan van Eyck的Arnolfini Portrait,1434年创作的木板油画)”、“Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night, oil on canvas, a moderately abstract landscape painting of an expressive night sky over a small hillside village, during his 12-month stay at the mental hospital near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France between 1889 and 1890.(1889年至1890年,Vincent van Gogh在法国普罗旺斯圣-雷姆米附近的精神病院住了12个月,期间创作了一幅油画The Starry Night,这是一幅较为抽象的风景画,描绘了山坡上一个小村庄上方富有表现力的夜空)、“The Harvesters is an oil painting on wood completed by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1565.(The Harvesters是Pieter Bruegel the Elder创作于1565年的木板油画)”以及“Guernica, a large black-and-white oil painting, was painted by the Cubist Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso in 1937.(Guernica是一幅大型黑白油画,由西班牙立体派画家Pablo Picasso于1937年创作)”可知,The Arnolfini Portrait的创作时间最早,故选A。
根据The Starry Night部分“When the Museum of Modern Art in New York City purchased the painting from a private collector in 1941, it was not well known, but it has since become one of Van Gogh’s most famous works.(1941年,纽约现代艺术博物馆从一位私人收藏家手中买下这幅画时,它并不为人所知,但它后来成为Van Gogh最著名的作品之一)”可知,它在20世纪40年代之前没有得到广泛认可。
根据Guernica部分中“Guernica, a large black-and-white oil painting, was painted by the Cubist Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso in 1937. The title ‘Guernica’ refers to the city that was bombed by Nazi planes during the Spanish Civil War. The painting depicts the horrors of war and as a result, has come to be an anti-war symbol and a reminder of the tragedies of war. (Guernica是一幅大型黑白油画,由西班牙立体派画家Pablo Picasso于1937年创作。‘Guernica’这个名字是指在西班牙内战期间被纳粹飞机轰炸的城市。这幅画描绘了战争的恐怖,因此成为反战的象征,提醒人们战争的悲剧)”可知,Pablo Picasso创作了纳粹给人们带来巨大灾难的画作。故选D。

Kieng Riven’s eight birthday was fast coming up so his mother asked him what he wanted. She expected the youngster to answer with a list of toys and games. His answer took his mother by surprise and brought her to tears.
A child’s birthday is usually spent doing fun activities, eating cakes, opening gifts surrounded (包围) by family and friends. Young Kieng had a different idea of how he wanted to spend his big day. Instead, he wanted to gift his community by handing out a dozen pizzas to homeless people living in a “tent city” in Charlotte, NC.
Antiqua, hoping to make good on her son’s birthday request, shopped around neighbourhood pizzas to see which of them could quickly fill a large order of 100 pizzas. She received only one reply to her request. To her shock, one charitable store manager of a local Papa John’s, named Gage Lock not only agreed to accept the order, he also provided a donation of 75 of the pizzas. Gage and his staff (工作人员) also delivered the pizza pies to the “tent city” in order to personally help give away them to the homeless population there.
“That made me want to do it so much more, knowing it was a 7-year-old kid, and all he wanted for his birthday was to give back to the community,” replied Gage describing his purpose to join in the unusual birthday pizza party. Another local pizzeria chipped in (捐钱) to help hand out the pizza safely while all wearing masks. Kieng’s friends and family also joined in to help pass out the slices with a side of kindness, making it one very memorable birthday.
“It is infectious; it makes you want to be kinder,” said one of the happy receivers of the present of good will.
4. What was Kieng’s idea of spending his birthday?
A. Feeding the homeless. B. Living in a tent city.
C. Eating cakes and pizzas. D. Doing fun activities with toys.
5. What can be inferred about the local Papa John’s?
A. It has a lot of staff. B. It is willing to do charity work.
C. It is very popular in the neighbourhood. D. It usually provides service to the homeless.
6. What do Paragraphs 3-4 probably suggest?
A. Gage Lock is the owner of two local pizzerias.
B. More people were influenced by Kieng’s kindness.
C. Gage Lock has a good relationship with the local pizzeria.
D. The local pizza of ten donates pizzas to the community.
7. What does the underlined word “infectious” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Catching. B. Funny. C. Tasty. D. Creative.
A 5. B 6. B 7. A
根据第二段的“Instead, he wanted to gift his community by handing out a dozen pizzas to homeless people living in a “tent city” in Charlotte, NC.(相反,他想给他的社区一份礼物,给住在北卡罗来纳州夏洛特“帐篷城”的无家可归者分发一打披萨)”可知,Kieng生日时想要的只是给无家可归的人提供食物。故选A。
根据第三段“To her shock, one charitable store manager of a local Papa John’s, named Gage Lock not only agreed to accept the order, he also provided a donation of 75 of the pizzas. Gage and his staff (工作人员) also delivered the pizza pies to the “tent city” in order to personally help give away them to the homeless population there.(令她震惊的是,当地一家棒约翰的慈善商店经理盖奇·洛克不仅同意接受订单,还捐赠了75个披萨。盖奇和他的员工还把披萨派送到“帐篷城”,以便亲自帮助分发给那里无家可归的人)”可知,Gage Lock作为当地Papa John’s的经理,不仅接受了大量比萨订单,还捐赠了部分比萨并亲自送给无家可归的人。由此推知,这家店愿意从事慈善工作。故选B。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的“To her shock, one charitable store manager of a local Papa John’s, named Gage Lock not only agreed to accept the order, he also provided a donation of 75 of the pizzas.(令她震惊的是,当地一家棒约翰的慈善商店经理盖奇•洛克不仅同意接受订单,还捐赠了75个披萨)”以及第四段的“Another local pizzeria chipped in (捐钱) to help hand out the pizza safely while all wearing masks. Kieng’s friends and family also joined in to help pass out the slices with a side of kindness, making it one very memorable birthday.(当地的另一家披萨店也帮忙安全分发披萨,所有人都戴着口罩。
故选A。

Would you take a trip if you couldn’t use your cellphone? A new tour company called Off the Grid is asking travellers to put their cellphones away and not even use them for photos. The company founder, Zach Beattie, is developing his business, using money he saved from a tech job at a mapping company. He’s hired guides for every trip but will help lead the first few himself.
The first trip is to Lisbon, Portugal, in July. It takes 7 to 10 days, with small groups of up to 16 people. Prices range from $1,500 to $1,650, including accommodations, meals and ground transportation. The plan includes at least three excursions (远足) and two social events, with an emphasis on unique experiences over bucket-list sightseeing. The tour also includes surfing lessons, yoga on the beach, a day of sailing and dinner with a local family.
“When you’re somewhere new, there’s a lot to see and a lot of cool and interesting people to meet,” Beattie said. “Your phone can distract (使分心) you.” The phone ban won’t be enforced quite as strictly as it seems at first glance. “We want it to be voluntary,” he said. “We’re not collecting phones and throwing them in a locked trunk. It’s held by you, but put in your pocket, and you state your intentions for the week, whether that’s checking your social media once or twice a day or a total blackout.”
Tour-goers also get a “dumbphone” without Internet access that’s loaded with numbers for group leaders and other participants, both for emergencies and to promote socializing. Participants may bring regular cameras, but Beattie is hiring a photographer for each tour so there will be plenty of photos to remember the trip. Once the trip is over, participants will have access to those photos for use in social media posts.
8. What can be learned about Zach Beattie?
A. He set up his business at his own expense.
B. He is always guiding every trip personally.
C. He forbids tourists to take along cellphones.
D. He used to earn his living in a tour company.
9. What do we know about the Lisbon trip?
A. The trip features sightseeing.
B. Participants live in homestays.
C. Air ticket is covered in the cost.
D. Tourists experience water sports.
10. What does Zach Beattie expect the participants to do?
A. Lock their phones in a trunk.
B. Post their photos on social media.
C. Free themselves from their phones.
D. Shift their focus onto dumbphones.
11. What can tour-goers do with the dumbphone?
A. Take photos. B. Access the Internet.
C. Record the trip. D. Contact group members.
A 9. D 10. C 11. D

根据文章第一段中“A new tour company called Off the Grid is asking travellers to put their cellphones away and not even use them for photos. The company founder, Zach Beattie, is developing his business, using money he saved from a tech job at a mapping company. (一家名为Off the Grid的新旅游公司要求游客把手机收起来,甚至不要用手机拍照。该公司的创始人扎克·比蒂(Zach Beattie)正在用他在一家地图公司从事技术工作攒下的钱发展自己的业务。)”可知,Zach Beattie用之前工作省下来的钱自己出钱创办自己的旅游公司,名为Off the Grid。故选A。
根据第二段最后一句“The tour also includes surfing lessons, yoga on the beach, a day of sailing and dinner with a local family.(行程还包括冲浪课程、海滩瑜伽、一天的帆船航行以及与当地家庭共进晚餐。)”
根据第三段中““When you’re somewhere new, there’s a lot to see and a lot of cool and interesting people to meet,” Beattie said. “Your phone can distract (使分心) you.” (‘当你到了一个新的地方,你会看到很多东西,会遇到很多很酷很有趣的人。’贝蒂说:‘你的手机会让你分心。’)”以及““We want it to be voluntary,” he said. “We’re not collecting phones and throwing them in a locked trunk. It’s held by you, but put in your pocket, and you state your intentions for the week, whether that’s checking your social media once or twice a day or a total blackout.”(‘我们希望这是自愿的,’他说:‘我们不会收集手机,然后把它们扔进锁着的后备箱。你拿着它,但把它放在口袋里,你陈述你一周的意图,无论是每天查看一两次社交媒体还是完全不上网。’)”可知,贝蒂希望参与者能够远离手机,把自己从手机中解放出来,因为手机会让人分心、会错过旅途中遇到的人和风景,但是不会收手机并把手机锁在后备箱里。故选C。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段第一句“Tour-goers also get a “dumbphone” without Internet access that’s loaded with numbers for group leaders and other participants, both for emergencies and to promote socializing. (游客们还会得到一个不能上网的“笨手机(非智能手机)”,里面有小组领导和其他参与者的电话号码,既可以用于紧急情况,也可以促进社交。)”可知,游客们还会得到一个不能上网的“笨手机(非智能手机)”,里面有小组领导和其他参与者的电话号码,游客可以用“笨手机(非智能手机)”来联络其他组员。故选D。

Children seem to care so much about their names. A study shows that most young people wish their parents had given them a different name.
Some people choose to change their names when they grow up. Many people in show business don’t use the names their parents gave them. Have you ever listened to Joanne? No? The answer could be “yes” if we call her stage name instead! You may never heard of Margaret. But if we tell you her stage name, you might know her as a famous dancer.
In many cultures, there are special ideas about how to choose a name. For example, many people choose a name that has been in their family for many years. It tells the child where he or she comes from.
Choosing a good name isn’t easy. Many parents search books that tell them the meanings of names. They could choose a name that carries a message. For example, Edith means “valuable gift”. Amanda means “love”. And Fara means “joy”.
Names like these tell family and friends how happy they are with their new baby. Other names can say something about the events during the birth of the child. In Africa, a first born son may have the name Mosi and the name Ama means “born on Saturday”.
Is every boy called Curtis polite? And is every girl called Mahira quick and full of energy? No parents can tell what kind of person their child will grow up to be. Just because parents name a boy Fahim, it doesn’t mean he will be clever. All they can do is hope.
12. What can we know about the study?
A. Young kids don’t care about their future.
B. Most young people care about their names.
C. Most girls want to change their names.
D. Most parents want to rename by themselves.
13. Why is “Joanne” mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To prove some people hope to be renamed.
B. To introduce a famous dancer to readers.
C. To introduce her true name.
D. To tell the benefit of name.
14. Why is it difficult to choose a good name?
A. Kids always want to rename.
B. Parents want to choose a meaningful name.
C. Parents aren’t sure if their kids will like the name.
D. It is hard to change kids’ names.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Names can never influence our lives
B. Methods to choose a suitable name
C. Love your parents, love your name
D. Your parents’ wish is behind names
B 13. A 14. B 15. D

The answer could be “yes” if we call her stage name instead! 故选A项。
根据第四段中“Choosing a good name isn’t easy. Many parents search books that tell them the meanings of names. They could choose a name that carries a message.

1. Which of the following paintings was produced earliest?
A The Arnolfini Portrait.
