18. What items primarily make up the floating area in the Pacific Ocean?
A. Paper products. B. Glass bottles. C. Plastic waste.
19. What is the second “R” mentioned by the speaker?
A. Reducing the amount of packaging. B. Recycling the materials. C. Reusing packaging.
20. What can individuals do to reduce waste according to the speaker?
A. Be a responsible industry worker. B. Buy products packaged in paper. C. Conduct stricter rules.
C 19. C 20. B
There is a floating area in the Pacific Ocean where rubbish and waste have gathered. It is mainly composed of plastic bags, plastic bottles, and other single-use items. These items are slowly broken down into microplastics, which are harmful to sea life. Thankfully, there are actions we can take to reduce the amount of waste and plastic pollution. Experts have introduced the concept of the “three Rs” for packaging — reduce, reuse, and recycle. By reducing the amount of packaging used on products, we can decrease waste from the start. Reusing packaging is another effective way. And finally, recycling the used materials can ensure they are given a new life instead of ending up in our oceans. At the same time, it’s crucial that we all play our part in addressing this crisis. We must be responsible consumers, trying to choose products with paper packaging to reduce waste. Governments and industries also need to conduct stricter rules and adopt sustainable solutions. Only by taking collective action can we hope to deal with the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and protect our ocean ecosystems for future generations.

The rejection letter from the city’s music school weighed heavily in Elsa’s pocket. At 19, her dream of becoming a concert pianist seemed broken. “Your style lacks classical discipline,” the letter read. That evening, she wandered to the family’s old barn, where moonlight streamed through cracked boards onto a dusty piano. Her fingers found Chopin’s Raindrop Prelude, each note reflecting her loneliness. Tears blurred the keys as she played—for the dreams buried under endless wheat fields.
The harvest festival brought unexpected change. Village children discovered Elsa’s piano, their curious fingers brushing the yellowed keys. “Make it sound like thunder!” a boy shouted. Hesitant at first, Elsa began mixing storm rhythms with insect sounds. Farmers paused their dancing, recognizing familiar sounds in the music. Grandma Marta sang an ancient folk tune, its melody weaving through Elsa’s chords. That night, she lay awake, realizing classical purity mattered less than heartfelt connection. It was a moment when she understood the true power of music was to touch people’s hearts in a way that resonated (共鸣) with their daily lives.
Months of experimentation brought results. Elsa’s video Songs from the Soil showed her rough hands dancing across the weathered piano, accompanied by field recordings. Urban music critics dismissed it as “agricultural noise”, but messages poured in. “You’ve given voice to our silent land,” wrote a farmer’s daughter. One teacher shared how Elsa’s music helped students appreciate rural life. It was as if Elsa had found a new language through her music, a language that could bridge the gap between the rural and the outside world.
The invitation to perform at the National Cultural Summit surprised her. Beneath crystal chandeliers (吊灯), Elsa’s modified piano used wheat seeds to make beats, creating rhythms that copied rain hitting dry soil. As the final sound ended, the cultural minister approached, “this isn’t just music—it’s the soul of our countryside.” Now teaching village children, Elsa smiles knowing true artistry grows where roots run deep.
24. What did Elsa realize during the harvest festival?
A. Classical music requires strict training. B. Music should connect with people’s lives.
C. Children dislike ancient instruments. D. Pianos need regular maintenance.
25. What is the urban music critics’ opinion on Elsa’s work?
A. They were open to new musical styles. B. They were eager to promote rural music.
C. They failed to understand its deeper meaning. D. They had a great appreciation for folk elements.
26. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The importance of classical music training.
B. The role of music in agricultural development.
C. The conflict between urban and rural music styles.
D. The story of a pianist who found her unique artistic way.
27. Which best describes Elsa’s emotional change?
A. Shame →Pride. B. Confusion → Certainty.
C. Desperation → Satisfaction. D. Anger → Acceptance.
B 25. C 26. D 27. C

根据文章第二段“That night, she lay awake, realizing classical purity mattered less than heartfelt connection. It was a moment when she understood the true power of music was to touch people’s hearts in a way that resonated (共鸣) with their daily lives(那天晚上,她躺在床上睡不着,意识到古典音乐的纯粹性比不上与人们内心的连接。就在那一刻,她明白了音乐真正的力量是以一种与人们日常生活产生共鸣的方式触动他们的心灵)”可知,在丰收节期间,Elsa意识到音乐应该与人们的生活相连接。故选B项。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Urban music critics dismissed it as “agricultural noise”, but messages poured in. “You’ve given voice to our silent land,” wrote a farmer’s daughter.
根据第一段“The rejection letter from the city’s music school weighed heavily in Elsa’s pocket. At 19, her dream of becoming a concert pianist seemed broken (市音乐学校寄来的拒绝信,在艾尔莎的口袋里沉甸甸的。19岁的她,成为音乐会钢琴家的梦想似乎破灭了)”、第二段“That night, she lay awake, realizing classical purity mattered less than heartfelt connection. It was a moment when she understood the true power of music was to touch people’s hearts in a way that resonated (共鸣) with their daily lives(那天晚上,她躺在床上睡不着,意识到古典音乐的纯粹性比不上与人们内心的连接。就在那一刻,她明白了音乐真正的力量是以一种与人们日常生活产生共鸣的方式触动他们的心灵)”以及最后一段“The invitation to perform at the National Cultural Summit surprised her. Beneath crystal chandeliers (吊灯), Elsa’s modified piano used wheat seeds to make beats, creating rhythms that copied rain hitting dry soil. As the final sound ended, the cultural minister approached, “this isn’t just music—it’s the soul of our countryside.” Now teaching village children, Elsa smiles knowing true artistry grows where roots run deep(受邀在全国文化峰会上演出让她感到惊讶。 D选项“The story of a pianist who found her unique artistic way(一位钢琴家找到她独特艺术之路的故事)”符合文章主旨,故选D项。

Research from the University of Sydney has brought to light the critical situation of Sydney’s koala population. In south-western Sydney, these koalas are part of the rare groups in New South Wales (NSW) that have so far escaped chlamydia. This highly infectious disease, which causes infertility, has dramatically decreased koala numbers in other eastern states of the continent.
Dr. Elspeth McLennan and Professor Carolyn Hogg from the University’s School of Environmental and Life Sciences led an in-depth analysis of these koalas. The results, published in Conservation Genetics, paint a concerning picture. NSW Government staff collected tissue samples from111koalas across seven sites in south-western Sydney suburbs and Wingecarribee in the Southern Highlands. Genetic analysis revealed a high degree of interrelatedness and close-relative reproduction among Sydney’s koalas, along with alarmingly low genetic diversity.
Low genetic diversity restricts the population’s ability to adapt to changes, making them extremely subject to environmental threats and disease outbreaks. Dr. McLennan pointed out that, on average, koalas in Sydney are related as cousins or half-siblings. Their highly urbanized habitats limit their movement and reproduction with distant populations, delaying genetic diversity growth.
Adding to their woes, koalas from the chlamydia-affected Wollondilly Shire might migrate (迁徙) to Sydney’s koala populations. Gene flow analysis shows movement between Wollondilly and Campbelltown, the southern-most chlamydia-free area. Dr. McLennan described it as a classic Catch-22. Wollondilly koalas could potentially boost genetic diversity in Sydney, but they may also introduce chlamydia. Given Sydney’s koalas’ low genetic variation, they might not be able to resist the disease if it spreads, leading to widespread infection and its severe consequences.
28. What makes Sydney’s koalas most likely environmentally threatened?
A. Their highly infectious nature. B. Their low genetic diversity.
C. Their in-ability to move around. D. Their preference for urban habitats.
29. The underlined word “woes” in paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. blessing B. misfortune C. annoyance D. superiority
30. What is Dr. McLennan’s attitude to the potential migration to Sydney’s koala populations?
A. Optimistic. B. Pessimistic. C. Contradictory. D. Indifferent.
31. Which of the following would be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Decline of Koala Populations in Australia B. Genetic Diversity Issues Among Sydney’s Koalas
C. The Importance of Genetic Diversity for Koalas D. Sydney Koalas’ Genetic Diversity or Widespread Infection
B 29. B 30. C 31. D
根据文章第三段“Low genetic diversity restricts the population’s ability to adapt to changes, making them extremely subject to environmental threats and disease outbreaks. (低遗传多样性限制了种群适应变化的能力,使它们极易受到环境威胁和疾病爆发的影响)”等内容可知,悉尼考拉最容易受到环境威胁的原因是它们的遗传多样性低。故选B项。
【29题详解】
词义猜测题。根据文章第四段划线词后文“koalas from the chlamydia-affected Wollondilly Shire might migrate (迁徙) to Sydney’s koala populations. Given Sydney’s koalas’ low genetic variation, they might not be able to resist the disease if it spreads, leading to widespread infection and its severe consequences
McLennan described it as a classic Catch-22. Wollondilly koalas could potentially boost genetic diversity in Sydney, but they may also introduce chlamydia. (麦克伦南博士将其描述为一个经典的两难困境。沃伦迪利郡的考拉可能会增加悉尼考拉的遗传多样性,但它们也可能会引入衣原体病)”可知,麦克伦南博士认为沃伦迪利郡的考拉迁移到悉尼考拉种群既有可能带来好处(增加遗传多样性),又有带来坏处(引入衣原体病)的风险,可推理出麦克伦南博士的这种态度是矛盾的。故选C项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Research from the University of Sydney has brought to light the critical situation of Sydney’s koala population. In south-western Sydney, these koalas are part of the rare groups in New South Wales (NSW) that have so far escaped chlamydia. Gene flow analysis shows movement between Wollondilly and Campbelltown, the southern-most chlamydia-free area. Dr. McLennan described it as a classic Catch-22. A novel study by the research team at Mass General Brigham delved (深挖) deep into the complex connection between creativity and the architecture of the brain. Their goal was to identify those parts of the brain that are crucial to human creativity and to find out the influences of brain injuries on these parts.
Through a careful examination of data gained from 857 individuals across 36 studies that employed a brain-scanning approach, the researchers discovered that creativity is not merely associated with one single region of the brain. Instead, it is closely linked to a specific network of brain connections. What came as a surprise was that individuals who had experienced brain problems or certain types of brain-related diseases, which affected these connections, appeared to exhibit enhanced creativity.
The research started with a comprehensive analysis of brain-scan data in an attempt to determine which parts of the brain become activated during creative activities such as drawing, writing stories, and composing music. Subsequently, an investigation was conducted into the data of patients whose creativity had undergone changes as a result of brain diseases. “Some people with brain diseases become more creative. Their brain damage patterns match our creativity-related network,” Kutsche, the leading researcher said.
An exceptionally fascinating finding was that the brain regions involved in creativity had an opposite correlation with a particular part of the brain that is responsible for overseeing and ensuring rules followed. A reduction in the activity of this part due to injuries might potentially be beneficial for creativity. This is because it could prevent the brain from being overly self-critical, thereby allowing ideas to flow more freely.
These findings are capable of explaining the situation where some brain-related diseases lead to a decrease in creativity, while others strangely result in an increase. Additionally, they might potentially open up a novel way for enhancing human creativity through brain stimulation. However, the researchers cautioned that these results do not cover all the brain connections relevant to creativity in that different parts of the brain are engaged in diverse creative tasks.
32. What is the function of paragraph 1?
A. To reveal the research outcomes. B. To introduce the research topic.
C. To describe the research procedures. D. To present the significance of the research.
33. What does the researchers’ discovery indicate about creativity?
A. Brain diseases never change it. B. It’s tied to a certain brain site.
C. It’s related to a special brain web. D. Injuries might negatively influence it.
34. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The analysis of relevant data. B. The purpose of the research.
C. The process of the research. D. The change of creative activities.
35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. More active rule-overseeing may help creativity. B. Brain diseases can impact creativity positively.
C. Current brain-creativity research is sufficient. D. Future research may focus on brain-stimulation for creativity.

At 7:30 a.m. on December 25th, Yvonne White got a call from an unknown number. “Hi. You don’t know me, but I have your brother,” said a shaky voice on the other end of the line. It was Sha Kyra Aughtry, a Buffalo resident who had rescued Yvonne’s brother, Joey White, in the deadly winter storm on the previous day.
Joey, then 64, is mentally disabled, Yvonne says. She had called him just before the storm hit, instructing him not to leave the group home where he lives. But Joey ventured outside. It’s unclear what time Joey left home or for what purpose, but Yvonne suspects he walked about 9 miles to North Park Theater, a single-screen cinema where he has worked since 1980. She believes he got scared and eventually decided to walk back home.
At around 6:30 a.m. on December 24th, Joey ended up in a snowbank directly outside Aughtry’s home, which in normal conditions is about a seven-minute drive from the theater. He was crying out in pain.
Aughtry went outside and found a stranger screaming and confused about where to go. She went into the storm with her boy-friend, and they carried Joey into their home. Joey had visible signs of severe frost-bite: His hands were severely swollen and covered in multicolored blisters (水泡). Aughtry used a hair dryer to skin off his clothing, which stuck tightly to his shaking body. She also cut off his frozen socks and removed the remains of a grocery store bag from Joey’s hands.
After about an hour of trying to warm him up, Aughtry called Yvonne. Joey had memorized his sister’s phone number. But Yvonne couldn’t leave her home because of the snow rather than stayed in constant communication from then on.
Despite all Aughtry had done to treat his wounds, Joey urgently needed medical attention. Getting help seemed impossible, though, with the roads covered with thick ice and snow.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Aughtry posted a live video in a local Facebook group.

Aughtry posted a live video in a local Facebook group. “I’m asking for help from whoever,” said Aughtry. “This man needs serious help.” She explained the crisis in her video, adding that she had exhausted all options for getting medical help without luck. To her delight, it met immediate warm answers. Neighbors offered to help. Within half an hour, several showed up around Aughtry’s home to lend a hand. They wrapped Joey in a warm blanket and carefully transported him to the closest hospital.
Aughtry accompanied him for the ride to the hospital. “I’m right here with you,” she kept talking to Joey on the way to relax him. In the hospital he was diagnosed with fourth-degree frostbite and ultimately needed almost all his fingers cut off. Luckily, though, Joey was alive. And his rescue was all owed to Aughtry, a totally stranger. “This stranger opened up her heart and opened up her home,” she said. “I cannot wait to hug her,” said Yvonne, who was overwhelmed with relief and appreciation.

The results published in Conservation Genetics, paint a concerning picture.
28 What makes Sydney’s koalas most likely environmentally threatened?
A Their highly infectious nature. B. Their low genetic diversity.
C. Their in-ability to move around. D. Their preference for urban habitats.
29. The underlined word “woes” in paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. blessing B. misfortune C. annoyance D. superiority
30. What is Dr. McLennan’s attitude to the potential migration to Sydney’s koala populations?
A. Optimistic. B. Pessimistic. C. Contradictory. D. Indifferent.
31. Which of the following would be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Decline of Koala Populations in Australia B. Genetic Diversity Issues Among Sydney’s Koalas
C. The Importance of Genetic Diversity for Koalas D. Sydney Koalas’ Genetic Diversity or Widespread Infection

1.续写词数应为150左右;
Aughtry posted a live video in a local Facebook group.
